Background: Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia cause a huge disease burden worldwide. Diet is an important factor affecting the iron levels. This study aims to explore the dietary patterns of school-aged children in rural areas of Guangzhou and their association with iron deficiency. Methods: Data on dietary surveys, lifestyle, demographic and laboratory tests were gathered from rural school-age children in Guangzhou. Factor analysis was applied to derive dietary patterns. Robust Poisson regression and subgroup analysis were used to analyze the association between dietary patterns and iron deficiency. Results: A total of 2,530 children and adolescents aged 9-17 years were enrolled. The prevalence of iron deficiency was 13.36%. Four dietary patterns were identified including snack and fast-food pattern, fruit and vegetable pattern, cereal and tuber pattern and meat and offal pattern. Both children and adolescents in the Q4 group (the highest propensity) of snack and fast-food pattern and cereal and tuber pattern had a higher risk of iron deficiency than the Q1 group (the lowest propensity). Both children and adolescents in the Q4 group of meat and offal pattern and fruit and vegetable pattern had a lower risk of iron deficiency than the Q1 group. The results of stratified analysis showed the negative effect of snack and fast-food pattern and the protective benefits of meat and offal pattern are more obvious for boys, and the negative effect of cereal and tuber pattern were obvious for girls. The negative effect or protective benefits of the four dietary patterns were obvious for children aged 9-13. Conclusion: Females, older children, and those with shorter sleep duration are at higher risk of iron deficiency. Snack and fast-food pattern and cereal and tuber pattern are risk factors for iron deficiency, and fruit and vegetable pattern and meat and offal pattern are protective factors for iron deficiency. The impact of diet on body iron levels is more obvious in boys and younger children. The findings of this study can provide evidence for formulating prevention and control measures on children and adolescents iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia.

Babesia orientalis, a protozoan parasite transmitted by the tick Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides, holds significant economic importance along the Yangtze River. Key factors in the host invasion process include rhoptry neck proteins (RON2, RON4, and RON5) and apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1). However, the intricacies of the interaction between AMA1 and RONs remain incompletely elucidated in B. orientalis. To better understand these crucial invasion components, the RON4 gene of B. orientalis (BoRON4) was cloned and sequenced. RON4 is 3468 base pairs long, encodes 1155 amino acids, and has a predicted molecular weight of 130 kDa. Bioinformatics analysis revealed a unique region (amino acid residues 109-452) in BoRON4, which demonstrates higher sensitivity to epitope activity. The BoRON4 gene was strategically truncated, amplified, and cloned into the pGEX-6p-1 vector for fusion expression. We successfully used the mouse polyclonal antibody to identify native BoRON4 in B. orientalis lysates. Furthermore, the corresponding BoRON4 protein band was detected in the water buffalo serum infected with B. orientalis, while no such band was observed in the control. Additionally, I-TASSER and Discovery Studio software were used to predict the tertiary structures of BoRON4 and its ligands, CH-PKA and CH-complex. These ligands can serve as lead compounds for the development of anti-babesiosis drugs. In conclusion, BoRON4 emerges as a promising candidate antigen for distinguishing water buffalo infected with B. orientalis from their normal counterparts. This study positions BoRON4 as a potential diagnostic antigen for babesiosis in water buffalo, contributing valuable insights to the field of parasitology.

The precise control of the chirality of polymer assemblies is a challenge faced by scientists and has received significant attention in recent years. In this study, we employed the polymerization-induced chiral self-assembly (PICSA) method to create chiral side-chain cyanobiphenyl (CB) block copolymer (BCP) assemblies. The flexible spacers in chiral CB monomers were regulated to exhibit two distinct odd-even effects in the supramolecular asymmetrical arrangement of the CB mesogens inside BCP assemblies. The research results indicated that the liquid crystalline properties of CB mesogens significantly influence the magnitude and sign of their chiroptical properties. These findings have significant implications for the design of polymer assemblies with designable chiroptical functions.

Delayed outcome is common in phase I oncology clinical trials. It causes logistic difficulty, wastes resources, and prolongs the trial duration. This article investigates this issue and proposes the time-to-event 3 + 3 (T3 + 3) design, which utilizes the actual follow-up time for at-risk patients with pending toxicity outcomes. The T3 + 3 design allows continuous accrual without unnecessary trial suspension and is costless and implementable with pretabulated dose decision rules. Besides, the T3 + 3 design uses the isotonic regression to estimate the toxicity rates across dose levels and therefore can accommodate for any targeted toxicity rate for maximum tolerated dose (MTD). It dramatically facilitates the trial preparation and conduct without intensive computation and statistical consultation. The extension to other algorithm-based phase I dose-finding designs (e.g., i3 + 3 design) is also studied. Comprehensive computer simulation studies are conducted to investigate the performance of the T3 + 3 design under various dose-toxicity scenarios. The results confirm that the T3 + 3 design substantially shortens the trial duration compared with the conventional 3 + 3 design and yields much higher accuracy in MTD identification than the rolling six design. In summary, the T3 + 3 design addresses the delayed outcome issue while keeping the desirable features of the 3 + 3 design, such as simplicity, transparency, and costless implementation. It has great potential to accelerate early-phase drug development.

The investigation of chiral supramolecular stacking is of essential significance for the understanding of the origin of homochirality in nature. Unlike structurally well-defined amphiphilic liposomes, it remains unclear whether the solvophilic segments of the amphiphilic block copolymer play a decisive role in the construction of asymmetric superstructures. Herein, insights are presented into the stacking patterns and morphological regulation in azobenzene-containing block copolymer assemblies solely by modulating the solvophilic chain length. The solvophilic poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) segments of different molecular weights could cause multi-mode chirality inversions involving stacking transitions between intra-chain π-π stacking, inter-chain H- and J-aggregation. Furthermore, the length of the solvophilic PMAA also affects the morphology of the chiral supramolecular assemblies; rice grain-like micelles, worms, nanofibers, floccules, and lamellae can be prepared at different solvophilic-solvophobic balance. The comprehensive mechanism is collectively revealed by utilizing various measurement methods, such as including circular dichroism (CD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). This study highlights the critical importance of fully dissolved solvophilic segments for the chiroptical regulation of the aggregated core, providing new insights into the arrangement of chiral supramolecular structures in polymer systems.

Objective: The applications of personalized abutments and abutment crown bridge products have increased year by year, but there is no clear requirement for clinical evaluation of the same variety of such products. This study mainly introduces the clinical evaluation concerns of personalized abutments and abutment crown bridge products, in order to provide reference for the declaration and registration of such products. Methods: The clinical evaluation of personalized abutments and crown bridge products are summarized, and the research content of clinical evaluation is clarified. Results: The clinical evaluation requirements that need to be considered by enterprises are introduced. Conclusion: Personalized abutment and abutment crown bridge products can refer to this study when they are launched in China, mainly using in vitro performance comparison tests for equivalence verification.

Globally, the high consumption levels of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and their effect on health have drawn significant attention. This study aimed to identify the consumption patterns of SSBs among children in rural areas of Guangzhou, China, and explore their association with undernutrition. A total of 1864 children aged 9-17 years old were included in this study. Demographics, lifestyle behaviors, and anthropometric and dietary information were collected. Factor analysis was used to identify patterns of SSBs, while nutritional status was assessed using Body Mass Index (BMI). Latent class analysis was used to establish dietary preference models. Log-binomial regression analysis was used to analyze the association between SSBs consumption patterns and undernutrition. The undernutrition prevalence in children was 14.54-19.94% in boys and 9.07% in girls. Three SSB consumption patterns were identified, including the plant protein pattern, dairy-containing pattern, and coffee pattern. Both medium-high (Q3) and the highest (Q4) scores in the dairy-containing pattern were positively associated with the risk of undernutrition, especially in boys. Furthermore, the highest scores in the plant protein pattern and coffee pattern were positively associated with the risk of undernutrition in children aged 9-10 years old. The dairy-containing pattern was a risk factor for undernutrition in children, especially for boys; the plant protein patterns and coffee patterns were risk factors for undernutrition in children aged 9-10 years old. The findings of the study can provide scientific evidence and policy recommendations for improving children's health conditions.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular remodeling is the adaptive process in which the heart undergoes changes due to stress, leading to heart failure (HF). The progressive decline in cardiac function is considered to contribute to intestinal barrier impairment. LuQi Formula (LQF) is a traditional Chinese medicine preparation widely used in the treatment of ventricular remodeling and HF. However, the role of LQF in the impairment of intestinal barrier function induced by ventricular remodeling remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ventricular remodeling was induced in rats by permanently ligating the left anterior descending branch coronary artery, and cardiac function indexes were assessed using echocardiography. Heart and colon tissue morphology were observed by hematoxylin-eosin, Masson's trichrome and Alcian Blue Periodic acid Schiff staining. Myocardial cell apoptosis was detected using TUNEL and immunohistochemistry. Circulatory levels of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), intestinal permeability markers endotoxin, D-lactate and zonulin, as well as inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-1 beta were measured by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Expression levels of tight junction (TJ) proteins and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) in colon tissue were detected by immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry and western blotting. Cardiac function indexes and intestinal permeability markers of patients with HF were analyzed before and after 2-4 months of LQF treatment. RESULTS: LQF protected cardiac function and alleviated myocardial fibrosis and apoptosis in rats with ventricular remodeling. LQF protected the intestinal barrier integrity in ventricular remodeling rats, including maintaining colonic tissue morphology, preserving the number of goblet cells and normal expression of TJ proteins. Furthermore, LQF upregulated the expression of HIF-1α protein in colon tissue. Intervention with a HIF-1α inhibitor weakened the protective effect of LQF on intestinal barrier integrity. Moreover, a reduction of HIF-1α aggravated ventricular remodeling, which could be alleviated by LQF. Correspondingly, the circulating levels of intestinal permeability markers and BNP in HF patients were significantly decreased, and cardiac function markedly improved following LQF treatment. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated that LQF effectively protected cardiac function by preserving intestinal barrier integrity caused by ventricular remodeling, at least partially through upregulating HIF-1α expression.

Background: Brain atrophy represents a final common pathway for pathological processes in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and is now recognized as a strong independent predictor of clinical status and progression. The mechanism underlying brain atrophy in patients with CSVD is not yet fully comprehended. This study aims to investigate the association of morphologic features of intracranial distal arteries (A2, M2, P2 and more distal) with different brain structures [gray matter volume (GMV), white matter volume (WMV), and cerebrospinal fluid volume (CSFV)]. Furthermore, we also examined whether a correlation existed between these cerebrovascular characteristics and GMV in different brain regions. Method: A total of 39 participants were eventually enrolled. The morphologic features of intracranial distal arteries based on TOF-MRA were extracted and quantified using the intracranial artery feature extraction technique (iCafe). The brain 3D-T1 images were segmented into gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using the "Segment" tool in CAT12 for the voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis. Univariable and multivariable linear regression models were used to investigate the relationship between these cerebrovascular features and different brain structures. Partial correlation analysis with a one-tailed method was used to evaluate the relationship between these cerebrovascular features and GMV in different brain regions. Results: Our findings indicate that both distal artery length and density were positively correlated with GM fraction in CSVD patients, regardless of whether univariable or multivariable linear regression analyses were performed. In addition, distal artery length (ß = -0.428, p = 0.007) and density (ß = -0.337, p = 0.036) were also found to be negative associated with CSF fraction, although this relationship disappeared after adjusting for potential confounders. Additional adjustment for the effect of WMHs volume did not change these results. In subgroup anasysis, we found that participants in the highest distal artery length tertile had significantly higher GM fraction and lower CSF fraction level than participants in the lowest distal artery length tertile. In partial correlation analysis, we also found that these cerebrovascular characteristics associated with regional GMV, especially subcortical nuclear. Conclusion: The morphologic features of intracranial distal arteries, including artery length, density and average tortuosity, measured from 3D-TOF MRA, are associated with generalized or focal atrophy indexes of CSVD.

Controlling the secondary phase in chiral liquid-crystalline (LC) polymers is of great importance since it transfers and amplifies molecular information to the macroscopic properties. However, the chiral superstructures of the LC phase are determined exclusively by the inherent configuration of the parent chiral source. Here, we report the switchable supramolecular chirality of heteronuclear structures by the untraditional command between common chiral "sergeant" units and various achiral "soldier" units. Different chiral induction pathways between sergeants and soldiers were observed for copolymer assemblies with mesogenic and non-mesogenic soldier units, demonstrating the formation of a helical phase independent of the absolute configuration of the stereocenter. In the presence of non-mesogenic soldier units, the classical SaS (Sergeants and Soldiers) effect in the amorphous phase was observed; whereas in a full LC system, bidirectional command of sergeants was activated in response to the phase transition. Meanwhile, a full spectrum of morphological phase diagrams including spherical micelles, worms, nanowires, spindles, tadpoles, anisotropic ellipsoidal vesicles, and isotropic spherical vesicles were successfully achieved. Such spindles, tadpoles, and anisotropic ellipsoidal vesicles have rarely been obtained previously from chiral polymer systems.

Giardia duodenalis is a zoonotic intestinal protozoan parasite that may cause host diarrhea and chronic gastroenteritis, resulting in great economic losses annually and representing a significant public health burden across the world. However, thus far, our knowledge on the pathogenesis of Giardia and the related host cell responses is still extensively limited. The aim of this study is to assess the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in regulating G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and apoptosis during in vitro infection of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) with Giardia. The results showed that the mRNA levels of ER chaperone proteins and ER-associated degradation genes were increased and the expression levels of the main unfolded protein response (UPR)-related proteins (GRP78, p-PERK, ATF4, CHOP, p-IRE1, XBP1s and ATF6) were increased upon Giardia exposure. In addition, cell cycle arrest was determined to be induced by UPR signaling pathways (IRE1, PERK and ATF6) through upregulation of p21 and p27 levels and promotion of E2F1-RB complex formation. Upregulation of p21 and p27 expression was shown to be related to Ufd1-Skp2 signaling. Therefore, the cell cycle arrest was induced by ER stress when infected with Giardia. Furthermore, the apoptosis of the host cell was also assessed after exposure to Giardia. The results indicated that apoptosis would be promoted by UPR signaling (PERK and ATF6), but would be suppressed by the hyperphosphorylation of AKT and hypophosphorylation of JNK that were modulated by IRE1 pathway. Taken together, both of the cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of IECs induced by Giardia exposure involved the activation of the UPR signaling. The findings of this study will deepen our understanding of the pathogenesis of Giardia and the associated regulatory network.

OBJECTIVE: To assess test-retest reliability, construct validity, known groups discrimination, and responsiveness of the Assessment of the SpondyloArthritis international Society Health Index (ASAS HI) to evaluate functioning, disability, and health in patients with radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (r-axSpA). METHODS: Data were generated from 2 randomized, placebo-controlled, active-controlled phase III ixekizumab studies (COAST-V, N = 341; COAST-W, N = 316). Assessments included the following: test-retest reliability (ie, intraclass correlation coefficients [ICCs] between ASAS HI scores at screening and baseline), construct validity (ie, Spearman correlation with standard r-axSpA outcome measures), known groups discrimination (ie, 1-way ANOVA comparing the ASAS HI with different disease activity categories, measured by the Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score [ASDAS]), and responsiveness (ie, Spearman correlation between changes in the ASAS HI and changes in the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index [BASFI], the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index [BASDAI], the ASDAS, and the Patient Global Assessment [PtGA] as well as ANOVA comparing changes in the ASAS HI with various responder categories). RESULTS: The ICC for test-retest reliability was 0.78 for COAST-V and 0.76 for COAST-W, indicating adequate agreement. Moderate-to-large correlations (r = 0.40-0.61) were observed between the ASAS HI and the BASDAI. Statistically significant differences (all P < 0.001) between mean ASAS HI scores were observed for subgroups based on ASDAS-defined disease activity categories at baseline and week 16. Moderate-to-large correlations existed between changes in the ASAS HI and the BASFI, BASDAI, ASDAS, and PtGA from baseline to week 16. The ASAS HI differentiated statistically (P < 0.001) between ASAS, BASDAI, and ASDAS response groups. CONCLUSION: The ASAS HI demonstrated reliability, construct validity, known groups discrimination, and responsiveness in adults with r-axSpA in 2 clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is the terminal stage of all heart diseases that is characterized by irreversible cardiomyocyte injury. Equilibrium of autophagy is essential for cardiac cell survival. The Luhong formula (LHF) has been clinically applied for decades, and has exhibited significant efficacy in improving heart function and alleviating the symptoms of angina pectoris. PURPOSE: To clarify the mechanism of action of LHF and one of its main constituents, hydroxysafflor yellow A (HYSA), in protecting ischemic cardiomyocytes by inhibiting autophagy. METHODS: Cell viability was detected by CCK-8 assay with LHF or HYSA pretreatment followed by hypoxic damage. Immunofluorescence of GFP-LC3-H9C2 and GFP-LC3-HeLa cells was used to observe autophagic flux. Beclin 1 and HIF1α protein expression were assessed using western blotting. LHF was orally administered to Wistar rats following myocardial infarcion. Echocardiography was performed before the rats were sacrificed; immunohistochemistry and western blotting were used to evaluate Beclin 1 and HIF1α expression in the myocardial tissue. Hematoxylin and eosin staining as well as Masson's trichrome staining were used to measure cardiac structure and myocardial fibrosis. RESULTS: LHF and HYSA reversed the hypoxia-induced decrease in cell viability in vitro. LHF and HYSA induced the aggregation of GFP-LC3 puncta and reduced the expression of Beclin 1 protein in H9C2, suggesting that LHF and HYSA may inhibit autophagy activity. Pretreatment with reactive oxygen species (ROS) inducers and inhibitors revealed that LHF and HYSA inhibited autophagy by suppressing cellular ROS. Further studies demonstrated that LHF and HYSA reduced the ROS levels by inhibiting HIF1α. LHF delayed fibrosis and protected heart function in vivo in a rat model of HF following myocardial infarction. Western blotting and immunohistochemistry revealed that LHF effectively reduced the expression of Beclin 1 and HIF1α in the infarcted area of the rat heart. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate that hydroxysafflor yellow A is the representative bioactive compounent of Luhong Formula on regulating autophagy to protectect cardiomyocytes from hypoxia injury. LHF and HYSA inhibit cardiac autophagy by suppressing HIF1α-mediated ROS production. This study helps to further clarify the underlying mechanism of LHF and provide a scientific basis for its development as a novel cardiovascular therapeutic agent.

Cardiovascular disease poses a significant threat to the quality of human life. Metabolic abnormalities caused by excessive caloric intake have been shown to lead to the development of cardiovascular diseases. Ceramides are structural molecules found in biological membranes; they are crucial for cell survival and lipid metabolism, as they maintain barrier function and membrane fluidity. Increasing evidence has demonstrated that ceramide has a strong correlation with cardiovascular disease progression. Nevertheless, it remains a challenge to develop sphingolipids as therapeutic targets to improve the prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. In this review, we summarize the three synthesis pathways of ceramide and other intermediates that are important in ceramide metabolism. Furthermore, mechanistic studies and therapeutic strategies, including clinical drugs and bioactive molecules based on these intermediates, are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Babesia gibsoni is one of the causative agents of canine babesiosis worldwide. Some dogs infected with B. gibsoni show severe clinical signs with progressive anemia, hemoglobinuria and splenomegaly. However, most infected dogs present a state of chronic infection and thereby may be a persistent pathogen carrier, increasing the risk of pathogen spreading. To date, little is known about this pathogen, with genomic and transcriptomic data in particular generally unavailable. This lack of knowledge extensively limits the development of effective diagnostic strategies and vaccines. METHODS: High-throughput RNA sequencing of total RNA of B. gibsoni asexual stages collected from infected beagles was performed. The unigenes were annotated in seven databases. The genes were sorted according to their fragments per kilobase per million (FPKM) value, which was used as an indicator for expression level. The gene with the highest FPKM value was cloned from the genome of B. gibsoni and further tested for immunogenicity, cellular localization and efficacy as a potential diagnostic candidate for detecting B. gibsoni in sera collected from beagles. RESULTS: A total of 62,580,653 clean reads were screened from the 64,336,475 raw reads, and the corresponding 70,134 transcripts and 36,587 unigenes were obtained. The gene with the highest FPKM value was screened from the unigenes; its full length was 1276 bp, and it was named BgP30. The BgP30 gene comprised three exons and two introns, with a 786-bp open reading frame, and encoded 261 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 30 kDa. The cellular localization assay confirmed the existence of P30 protein in B. gibsoni parasites. Moreover, P30 was detected in the serum of experimentally B. gibsoni-infected beagles, from 15 days up to 422 days post-infection, suggesting its usefulness as a diagnostic candidate for both acute and chronic infections. CONCLUSIONS: We sequenced the transcriptome of B. gibsoni asexual stages for the first time. The BgP30 gene was highly expressed in the transcriptome screening experiments, with further studies demonstrating that it could induce immune response in B. gibsoni-infected dogs. These results lead us to suggest that bgP30 may be a good diagnostic candidate marker to detect both acute and chronic B. gibsoni infections.

Introduction: Meningitis caused by oral anaerobic bacteria is rare, especially when complicated with an infected intracranial aneurysm. This paper has described an extremely rare case of bacterial meningitis caused by a mixed infection of oral microflora dominated by anaerobes, which developed cerebral infarcts, brain abscess, intracranial aneurysm, and severe hydrocephalus during treatment. Case report: We describe a 65-year-old male patient who was presented with fever and headache as the initial symptoms and then developed left ophthalmoplegia, right hemiplegia, and disturbance of consciousness. Brain imaging showed that intracranial lesions were increased progressively, and cerebral infarcts, brain abscesses, intracranial aneurysm, and severe hydrocephalus were appeared gradually. Eventually, we diagnosed it as anaerobic meningitis by making deoxyribonucleic acid sequencing from the brain abscess pus. After using an anti-microbial regimen that can sufficiently cover anaerobes, the patient's condition was effectively controlled. Conclusion: Anaerobic meningitis can cause a series of intracranial complications. Among them, the intracranial aneurysm is extremely rare. When evidence shows that the infection originates from oral flora, physicians should consider the possibility of this type of encephalitis. An early diagnosis and timely treatment are crucial to improving the prognosis.

OBJECTIVE: Survivors of stroke often experience post-stroke sleep disorders (PSSDs), but pharmacotherapy risks adverse side effects. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is potentially a nonpharmacotherapeutic option. This meta-analysis investigated the effects of rTMS to treat PSSD. METHODS: Databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of rTMS to treat PSSD, conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Risk-of-bias assessments were performed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. A meta-analysis of the following indexes was performed using RevMan 5.4 software: Pittsburgh sleep quality index; effective rate of sleep improvement; Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (for mood); and National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS, stroke severity). Mean differences (MDs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 17 RCTs, with 1411 patients overall. The indexes indicated that rTMS could improve the sleep quality, mood, and stroke severity of patients with PSSD: Pittsburgh sleep quality index (12 studies; MD = - 2.51, 95% CI [- 3.24, - 1.79], P < 0.00001); effective rate of sleep improvement (7 studies; MD = 4.03, 95% CI [2.43, 6.68], P < 0.0001); Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (2 studies; MD = - 4.05, 95% CI [- 4.77, - 3.32], P < 0.00001); and NIHSS (2 studies; MD = -2.71, 95% CI [- 3.36, - 2.06], P < 0.00001). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that rTMS may have positive effects on the sleep quality, mood, and stroke severity of patients with PSSD.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents age-related cognitive decline and affects various aspects of cognitive function, including memory, attention, executive function (EF), mental processing speed, speech-language skills, and visual-spatial skills. Among these, the EF is the most likely to decline with increasing age. Existing RCTs have shown that Baduanjin can improve the EF in MCI patients. In this study, we aimed to perform a systematic review to assess the efficacy of Baduanjin in improving the EF of patients with MCI. METHODS: Ten databases [English: Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, OVID, and EBSCOhost; Chinese: Wanfang Data, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and SinoMed] were systematically searched in April 2021. We herein included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) written in Chinese or English that assessed the effect of Baduanjin on the EF of patients with MCI. Two researchers used the Cochrane Collaboration's tool and assessed the risks of bias and performed a meta-analysis through the RevMan 5.4 software. We used the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) to evaluate the quality of the body of evidence. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines were followed. RESULTS: Sixteen RCTs involving 934 patients with MCI were included. The duration of Baduanjin was 16-24 weeks. The study showed that Baduanjin could significantly improve the EF (P < 0.05) based on the evaluation of the EF of patients with MCI using Montreal Cognitive Assessment, the Clock Drawing Test, the Digit Symbol Coding test, and the Trail Making Test. CONCLUSION: Baduanjin significantly improved the EF of patients with MCI.

INTRODUCTION: Limited real-world data are available comparing multiple biologics on their adherence, persistence, and the use of concomitant biologics in the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis in clinical practice. The objective was to compare persistence of and adherence to ixekizumab (IXE) treatment, as monotherapy or with concomitant medication, versus patients receiving other commonly prescribed biologics. METHODS: Patients who newly initiated IXE, adalimumab (ADA), etanercept (ETN), secukinumab (SEC), or ustekinumab (UST) in IBM MarketScan® databases with diagnosis of psoriasis were identified. Treatment comparisons on medication persistence, adherence, and monotherapy were based on balanced samples after inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW). RESULTS: A higher proportion of patients receiving IXE had had previous biologic therapies (50.3%) versus other biologics (ADA: 9.1%, ETN: 10.9%, SEC: 33.9%, UST: 19.7%). Patients treated with IXE showed statistically (p < 0.001) greater persistence than patients treated with SEC, ADA, UST, or ETN at both 1-year follow-up and up to 3 years of follow-up. Adherence for patients treated with IXE was significantly (p < 0.001) higher compared to ADA, ETN, and UST at both 1-year follow-up and up to 3 years of follow-up. There was no significantly higher adherence in patients treated with IXE compared to those treated with SEC at 1-year follow-up, but IXE had higher adherence than SEC (p < 0.05) at 1-3 year follow-up. IXE showed longer time on monotherapy than ADA (p < 0.001), ETN (p < 0.001), SEC (p < 0.05), and UST (p < 0.001) for both 1-year and 1-3 year follow-up. Sensitivity analyses on persistence, adherence, and monotherapy with further model adjustments after IPTW confirmed the findings. CONCLUSIONS: Patients treated with IXE were more persistent on and adherent to treatment and remained on monotherapy longer compared to those on all other commonly prescribed biologics combined or with individual biologics.
