RESUMO

We propose a scheme to achieve controllable nonreciprocal behavior in asymmetric graphene metasurfaces composed of a continuous graphene sheet and a poly crystalline silicon slab with periodic grooves of varying depths on each side. The proposed structure exhibits completely asymmetric reflection in opposite directions in the near-infrared range, which is attributed to the pronounced structural asymmetry and its accompanying nonlinear effects. The obtained nonreciprocal reflection ratio, reaching an impressive value of 21.27 dB, combined with a minimal insertion loss of just -0.76 dB, highlights the remarkable level of nonreciprocal efficiency achieved by this design compared to others in its category. More importantly, the proposed design can achieve dynamic tunability by controlling the incident field intensity and the graphene Fermi level. Our design highlights a potential means for creating miniaturized and integratable nonreciprocal optical components in reflection mode, which can promote the development of the integrated isolators, optical logic circuits, and bias-free nonreciprocal photonics.

Harvested jujube (Zizyphus jujuba Mill) is prone to softening due to active metabolism. This study investigated the effects of acidic electrolyzed water (AEW), high-voltage electrostatic field (HVEF) and their combination (AEW + HVEF) on softening and associated cell wall degrading enzymes (CWDEs), cell membrane integrity and antioxidant system of 'Huping' jujube during storage at 0 ± 1 °C. The results indicated that fruit subjected to AEW + HVEF, AEW or HVEF treatments maintained firmness 15.7%, 10.7%, and 5.3% higher than that of untreated control fruit at the end of 90 days cool storage. Fruit treated with AEW + HVEF could better maintain cell membrane integrity and exhibit lower activities of CWDEs and higher antioxidant capacity than that treated with either AEW or HVEF. Correlation analysis suggested that inhibition of softening was associated with reduction of CWDEs activities, and maintenance of membrane integrity and antioxidant system.

Fresh jujube is prone to rapid deterioration after harvest due to its active metabolism and rich nutrients. This study aimed to investigate the effects of acidic electrolyzed water (AEW), a high-voltage electrostatic field (HVEF) and a combination of AEW and HVEF (AEW + HVEF) treatments on the storage quality of Huping jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill. cv. Huping) stored at 0 ± 1 °C for 90 days. The results showed that the fruits treated with AEW + HVEF exhibited better storage quality than those treated with either AEW or HVEF alone. Specifically, the fruits treated with AEW + HVEF maintained higher levels of nutrients and taste compounds, including total soluble solid (TSS), total soluble sugar, reducing sugar and titratable acidity (TA), as well as lower respiration rate, weight loss, decay index and TSS/TA ratio. Additionally, the AEW + HVEF treatment could delay the increase in reddening index, a* and color change (ΔE) values, and the decrease in L* and b* values, by retarding the degradation of chlorophyll and accumulation of carotenoids and flavonoids, thereby preserving the more desirable appearance color. Furthermore, the combined treatment could enhance the glutathione reductase (GR) activity and 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothizoline)-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) +-scavenging ability. Thus, the AEW + HVEF treatment is a potential method for Huping jujube preservation.

Lung cancer is a leading fatal malignancy in humans. p53 mutants exhibit not only loss of tumor suppressor capability but also oncogenic gain-of-function, contributing to lung cancer initiation, progression and therapeutic resistance. Research shows that p53 mutants V157F and R158L occur with high frequency in lung squamous cell carcinomas. Revealing their conformational dynamics is critical for developing novel lung therapies. Here, we used all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the effect of V157F and R158L substitutions on the structural properties of the p53 core domain (p53C). Compared to wild-type (WT) p53C, both V157F and R158L mutants display slightly lesser ß-sheet structure, larger radius of gyration, larger volume and larger exposed surface area, showing aggregation-prone structural characteristics. The aggregation-prone fragments (residues 249-267 and 268-282) of two mutants are more exposed to water solution than that of WT p53C. V157F and R158L mutation sites can affect the conformation switch of loop 1 through long-range associations. Simulations also reveal that the local structure and conformation around the V157F and R158L mutation sites are in a dynamic equilibrium between the misfolded and properly folded conformations. These results provide molecular mechanistic insights into allosteric mechanisms of the lung-enriched p53 mutants.

We investigate the optical resonances in coupled meta-atoms with hybrid interaction pathways. One interaction pathway is the directly near-field coupling between the two meta-atoms. The other interaction pathway is via the continuum in a waveguide functioned as a common bus connecting them. We show that by properly introducing gain or loss into the meta-atoms, the hybrid optical system becomes parity-time (P T) symmetric, in which the effective coupling rate can be customized by manipulating the length of the waveguide. At the exact phase of the customized P T symmetry, the coupled meta-atoms support discrete super-resonant modes that can be observed from the transmission spectra as extremely sharp peaks. At an exception point where the eigenmodes coalesce, albeit the transmission curve is flat, a high-Q factor of the localized field in the meta-atoms can be obtained. Similarities of the super-resonance with the bound states in the continuum (BICs) are discussed. This investigation promotes our understanding about the ways in realizing high-Q optical resonance especially by manipulating the distributions of loss and gain via the concepts of P T and BICs. Many attractive applications are expected.

We present terahertz metasurfaces based on aligned rectangular graphene patches placed on top of a dielectric layer to convert the transmitted linearly polarized waves to circular or elliptical polarized radiation. Our results lead to the design of an ultrathin broadband terahertz quarter-wave plate. In addition, ultrathin metasurfaces based on the arrays of L-shaped graphene periodic patches are demonstrated to achieve broadband cross-polarization transformation in reflection and transmission. The proposed metasurface designs have tunable responses and are envisioned to become the building blocks of several integrated terahertz systems.

We study the diffraction of optical waves by a single layer of gyromagnetic cylinders. We show that a nonvanishing rotating dipole momentum is excited in a single gyromagnetic cylinder because of the classic analog of the Zeeman effect on photonic angular momentum states (PAMSs). Consequently, different collective dipole modes are excited in a gyromagnetic cylinder array at opposite incident angles. Nonreciprocal optical diffraction effects can be observed, where the transmission and reflection coefficients depend on the sign of the incident angle. A novel phenomenon of nonreciprocal negative directional transmission is demonstrated and numerically analyzed. This work highlights the potential of PAMSs in manipulating the propagation of optical waves for various applications.

We propose a novel scheme in realizing tunable slow-light performance by manipulating dark photonic angular momentum states (PAMSs) in metamaterials via the magneto-optical effect. We show that by applying a static magnetic field B, some pairs of sharp transmission dips can be observed in the background transparency window of a complex metamaterial design. Each pair of transmission dips are related to the excitation of dark PAMSs with opposite topological charges -m and +m, with a lifted degeneracy due to the classic analogue of Zeeman effect. Nonreciprocal characteristics can be observed in the distributions of field amplitude and transverse energy flux. The performance of slow light, including the group index ng, its abnormal feature, the associated strong absorption and the dependence with B are also discussed.

Complex metamaterials with multiple optical resonances in constituent elements possess many similarities with open quantum systems that can be described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. By analogy with a two-state open quantum system, we show that a classic analogue of exceptional points can be observed in the transmission spectra of dual subwavelength metallic gratings. Anti-crossing (crossing) between the two branches λ(R) of extraordinary optical transmission, with crossing (anti-crossing) of the corresponding widths Γ(R), is observed in the parameter space spanned by the lateral displacement L and the angle of incidence φ0. Exchanges of field patterns and phases, and the variation of field profile when circling the exceptional point are discussed. This work highlights the potential to transfer the concepts and applications from open quantum systems to optical metamaterials.

Magneto-optical (MO) effect can break the reciprocal propagation of an optical wave along a MO-metal interface. We show that this nonreciprocal property also influences the guided modes in metal-MO-metal waveguides. Especially, the field profiles of the guided modes are neither symmetric nor anti-symmetric, but asymmetric. We then study the resonant optical transmission through a thin metal film with subwavelength MO slits. Magnetic field changes the transmission spectra of the structure, and a MO-induced transparent window is open, where the MO medium becomes extremely anisotropic. The guided-mode mediated high transmission is associated with an asymmetric field distribution and a circling energy flux.
