RESUMO

This study investigated the impact of different temperatures and durations on the structural and emulsifying properties of copra meal protein. Additionally, the stability of copra meal protein Pickering emulsions was assessed through rheological and interfacial characteristics. Findings revealed a positive correlation between emulsification properties and heating temperature and duration. Thermal aggregates, facilitated by hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and disulfide bonds, significantly enhanced surface hydrophobicity. Heat-treated copra meal protein-based Pickering emulsions demonstrate enhanced adsorption at the oil-water interface and resistance to diffusion. The three-phase contact angle increases from 57.7° to 79.8° following heating at 95 °C for 30 min. The addition of NaCl and heating treatment did not affect emulsion particle size or interface adsorption ability. But it improved the rheological properties to varying degrees. These results offer valuable insights for optimizing the physicochemical and functional attributes of copra meal protein in the food industry.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the effects of a 'Rebuilding Myself' intervention on enhancing the adaptability of cancer patients to return to work. METHODS: A single-center, single-blind, randomized controlled trial design was used. Eligible patients who were receiving routine hospital treatment were recruited from the university-affiliated hospital in our city. Patients in the control group only received usual care, while patients in the intervention group received additional 'Rebuilding Myself' intervention. Adaptability to return to work, self-efficacy of returning to work, mental resilience, quality of life and work ability were measured at baseline, the 6th and 12th of the intervention. The general estimation equations were used to compare the overall changes of each outcome index between the two groups at different time points. Considering that there may be patient shedding and rejection, Per-Protocol and Intention-to-Treat analysis were used to analyze the data in this study. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between the two groups of patients in the cancer patients' adaptability to return to work, self-efficacy to return to work, mental resilience, work abilities, the physical, emotional, cognitive function, fatigue, insomnia and overall health status dimensions of quality of life (P < 0.05). And no significant difference was found in other dimensions (P > 0.05). The group effect, time effect, and interaction effect of patients' return to work adaptability and return to work self-efficacy were statistically significant in both groups (P < 0.05). Mental resilience, working ability, and quality of life had obvious time effect and interaction effect (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This intervention could improve cancer patients' adaptability to return to work, self-efficacy to return to work, mental resilience, work abilities and quality of life. And it can be further expanded to improve the adaptability of patients to return to work, then to help patients achieve comprehensive rehabilitation. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: The application of 'Rebuilding Myself' interventions can effectively improve the adaptability of cancer patients returning to work. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was registered at the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (Registration number: ChiCTR2200057943) on 23 March, 2022.

Osmanthus fragrans flower flavonoids (OFFF) possess superior antioxidant and antibacterial activities. However, scant information exists on the efficacy of these secondary metabolites as preservatives for fresh-cut fruits and vegetables. Here, OFFF were tested as a natural preservative for the first time in fresh-cut Yuluxiang pear (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd.) to assess effects on fruit quality. OFFF-treated samples showed significant retention of firmness, titratable acid, soluble solid content, and weight. Moreover, OFFF maintained the original fruit color, inhibited the decline of total phenol, reducing power and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging power, and diminished polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase oxidase activities. Furthermore, OFFF treatment effectively inhibited microbial growth. OFFF-treated samples also displayed better sensory quality. Considering cost and effectiveness, the most suitable concentrations of OFFF extract for fresh-cut Yuluxiang pear preservation were 0.7 and 0.9 mg/mL. The results indicate that OFFF treatment may be a potent strategy to inhibit browning and enhance nutritional properties of fresh-cut pear fruit.

Facial masks have become ubiquitous in our daily life to endow skin enough moisture and activated nutrition through mask nonwovens infused with skincare ingredients. However, the active nutrients in wet masks are prone to deterioration and deactivation. Herein, a novel multifunctional nanofiber dry mask was successfully prepared using aqueous-electrospun phenolic acid grafted chitosan/collagen peptides. When used, the functional nanofibers in the mask dissolve through spraying moisture, activating active ingredients in response to water and providing in-situ free radical scavenging, moisturizing and antibacterial effects to the skin. In this work, a series of gallic acid (GA), caffeic acid (CA), and protocatechuic acid (PA) have been studied to be grafted with chitosan to improve water solubility of chitosan (CS). Also, through aqueous electrospinning of phenolic acid-grafted chitosan/collagen peptides, a one-step green multifunctional nanofiber mask was obtained. The results showed that the mask had a 12.14 % moisturizing rate and a 94.09 % activity for removing free radicals from the skin after encountering moisture. Considering its high efficiency, controllable function release, and easy processability, the nanofiber multifunctional mask may provide a competitive alternative to facial masks and promote potential value-added applications of bio-based macro-molecules.

In this study, ω-3 medium- and long-chain triacylglycerols (MLCTs) microcapsules with excellent performance were obtained using soy protein as the wall component to address the oxidation-related problems of MLCTs. Additionally, the effect of soy, whey, or pea proteins on microcapsules in terms of the changes in their structure and physicochemical properties was investigated. The results showed that the small particle size, low PDI (polydispersity index) and zeta potential, fast adsorption rate, and low interfacial tension of these protein-based samples fabricated through the O/W template method were conducive to maintaining the integrity of microcapsules during spray-drying. The microcapsules, characterized by a spherical shape, exhibited superior encapsulation efficiency of 94.56%, surpassing the findings of previous investigations. Overall, these microcapsules exhibited long-term storage stability and low controllable release rates, which could be utilized as carriers for liposoluble actives.

BACKGROUND: Advance care planning is a process through which people communicate their goals and preferences for future medical care. Due to the complexity of the decision-making process, decision aids can assist individuals in balancing potential benefits and risks of treatment options. OBJECTIVE: While decision aids have the potential to better promote advance care planning, their characteristics, content and application effectiveness are unclear and lack systematic review. Therefore, we aimed to explore these three aspects and establish a foundation for future research. DESIGN: Scoping review. METHODS: This scoping review adheres to the framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley and the PRISMA-ScR list. Six English-language databases were systematically searched from the time of construction until 1 December 2023. Two researchers conducted the article screening and data extraction, and the extracted data was presented in written tables and narrative summaries. RESULTS: Of the 1479 titles and abstracts, 20 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Types of decision aids were employed, mainly websites and videos. Decision aid's primary components center around 11 areas, such as furnishing information, exploring treatment and care preferences. The main manifestations were a significant increase in knowledge and improved recognition of patients' target value preferences. Among the aids, websites and videos for advance care planning have relatively high content acceptability and decision-making process satisfaction, but their feasibility has yet to be tested. CONCLUSIONS: Decision aids were varied, with content focused on describing key information and exploring treatment and care preferences. Regarding application effects, the aids successfully facilitated the advance care planning process and improved the quality of participants' decisions. Overall, decision aids are efficient in improving the decision-making process for implementing advance care planning in cancer and geriatric populations. In the future, personalised decision aids should be developed based on continuous optimization of tools' quality and promoted for clinical application. The formation of a solid electrolyte interphase on carbon anodes causes irreversible loss of Na+ ions, significantly compromising the energy density of Na-ion full cells. Sodium compensation additives can effectively address the irreversible sodium loss but suffer from high decomposition voltage induced by low electrochemical activity. Herein, we propose a universal electrocatalytic sodium compensation strategy by introducing a carbon nanotube (CNT)/MnO2 catalyst to realize full utilization of sodium compensation additives at a much-reduced decomposition voltage. The well-organized CNT/MnO2 composite with high catalytic activity, good electronic conductivity, and abundant reaction sites enables sodium compensation additives to decompose at significantly reduced voltages (from 4.40 to 3.90 V vs Na+/Na for sodium oxalate, 3.88 V for sodium carbonate, and even 3.80 V for sodium citrate). As a result, sodium oxalate as the optimal additive achieves a specific capacity of 394 mAh g-1, almost reaching its theoretical capacity in the first charge, increasing the energy density of the Na-ion full cell from 111 to 158 Wh kg-1 with improved cycle stability and rate capability. This work offers a valuable approach to enhance sodium compensation efficiency, promising high-performance energy storage devices in the future.

Stress-induced immunosuppression (SIIS) is one of the common problems in intensive poultry production, which brings enormous economic losses to the poultry industry. Accumulating evidence has shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) were important regulators of gene expression in the immune system. However, the miRNA-mediated molecular mechanisms underlying SIIS in chickens are still poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the biological functions and regulatory mechanism of miRNAs in chicken SIIS. A stress-induced immunosuppression model was successfully established via daily injection of dexamethasone and analyzed miRNA expression in spleen. Seventy-four differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) was identified, and 229 target genes of the DEMs were predicted. Functional enrichment analysis the target genes revealed pathways related to immunity, such as MAPK signaling pathway and FoxO signaling pathway. The candidate miRNA, gga-miR-146a-5p, was found to be significantly downregulated in the Dex-induced chicken spleen, and we found that Dex stimulation significantly inhibited the expression of gga-miR-146a-5p in Chicken macrophages (HD11). Flow cytometry, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU), cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and other assays indicated that gga-miR-146a-5p can promote the proliferation and inhibit apoptosis of HD11 cells. A dual-luciferase reporter assay suggested that the Interleukin 1 receptor associated kinase 2 (IRAK2) gene, which encoded a transcriptional factor, was a direct target of gga-miR-146a-5p, gga-miR-146a-5p suppressed the post-transcriptional activity of IRAK2. These findings not only improve our understanding of the specific functions of miRNAs in avian stress but also provide potential targets for genetic improvement of stress resistance in poultry.

The high-capacity advantage of lithium metal anode was compromised by common use of copper as the collector. Furthermore, lithium pulverization associated with "dead" Li accumulation and electrode cracking deteriorates the long-term cyclability of lithium metal batteries, especially under realistic test conditions. Here, we report an ultralight, integrated anode of polyimide-Ag/Li with dual anti-pulverization functionality. The silver layer was initially chemically bonded to the polyimide surface and then spontaneously diffused in Li solid solution and self-evolved into a fully lithiophilic Li-Ag phase, mitigating dendrites growth or dead Li. Further, the strong van der Waals interaction between the bottommost Li-Ag and polyimide affords electrode structural integrity and electrical continuity, thus circumventing electrode pulverization. Compared to the cutting-edge anode-free cells, the batteries pairing LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 with polyimide-Ag/Li afford a nearly 10% increase in specific energy, with safer characteristics and better cycling stability under realistic conditions of 1× excess Li and high areal-loading cathode (4 milliampere hour per square centimeter).

BACKGROUND: It is very important to detect mandibular fracture region. However, the size of mandibular fracture region is different due to different anatomical positions, different sites and different degrees of force. It is difficult to locate and recognize fracture region accurately. METHODS: To solve these problems, M3YOLOv5 model is proposed in this paper. Three feature enhancement strategies are designed, which improve the ability of model to locate and recognize mandibular fracture region. Firstly, Global-Local Feature Extraction Module (GLFEM) is designed. By effectively combining Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Transformer, the problem of insufficient global information extraction ability of CNN is complemented, and the positioning ability of the model to the fracture region is improved. Secondly, in order to improve the interaction ability of context information, Deep-Shallow Feature Interaction Module (DSFIM) is designed. In this module, the spatial information in the shallow feature layer is embedded to the deep feature layer by the spatial attention mechanism, and the semantic information in the deep feature layer is embedded to the shallow feature layer by the channel attention mechanism. The fracture region recognition ability of the model is improved. Finally, Multi-scale Multi receptive-field Feature Mixing Module (MMFMM) is designed. Deep separate convolution chains are used in this modal, which is composed by multiple layers of different scales and different dilation coefficients. This method provides richer receptive field for the model, and the ability to detect fracture region of different scales is improved. RESULTS: The precision rate, mAP value, recall rate and F1 value of M3YOLOv5 model on mandibular fracture CT data set are 97.18%, 96.86%, 94.42% and 95.58% respectively. The experimental results show that there is better performance about M3YOLOv5 model than the mainstream detection models. CONCLUSION: The M3YOLOv5 model can effectively recognize and locate the mandibular fracture region, which is of great significance for doctors' clinical diagnosis.

O3-type layered oxide cathodes (NaxTMO2) for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted significant attention as one of the most promising potential candidates for practical energy storage applications. The poor Na+ diffusion kinetics is, however, one of the major obstacles to advancing large-scale practical application. Herein, we report bismuth-doped O3-NaNi0.5Mn0.5O2 (NMB) microspheres consisting of unique primary nanoplatelets with the radially oriented {010} active lattice facets. The NMB combines the advantages of the oriented and exposed electrochemical active planes for direct paths of Na+ diffusion, and the thick primary nanoplatelets for less surface parasitic reactions with the electrolyte. Consequently, the NMB cathode exhibits a long-term stability with an excellent capacity retention of 72.5% at 1C after 300 cycles and an enhanced rate capability at a 0.1C to 10C rate (1C = 240 mA g-1). Furthermore, the enhancement is elucidated by the small volume change, thin cathode-electrolyte-interphase (CEI) layer, and rapid Na+ diffusion kinetics. In particular, the radial orientation-based Bi-doping strategy is demonstrated to be effective at boosting electrochemical performance in other layered oxides (such as Bi-doped NaNi0.45Mn0.45Ti0.1O2 and NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2). The results provide a promising strategy of utilizing the advantages of the oriented active facets of primary platelets and secondary particles to develop high-rate layered oxide cathodes for SIBs.

O3-type layered transition metal cathodes are promising energy storage materials due to their sufficient sodium reservoir. However, sluggish sodium ions kinetics and large voltage hysteresis, which are generally associated with Na+ diffusion properties and electrochemical phase transition reversibility, drastically minimize energy density, reduce energy efficiency, and hinder further commercialization of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Here, this work proposes a high-entropy tailoring strategy through manipulating the electronic local environment within transition metal slabs to circumvent these issues. Experimental analysis combined with theoretical calculations verify that high-entropy metal ion mixing contributes to the improved reversibility of redox reaction and O3-P3-O3 phase transition behaviors as well as the enhanced Na+ diffusivity. Consequently, the designed O3-Na0.9Ni0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Mn0.2Ti0.15Cu0.05O2 material with high-entropy characteristic could display a negligible voltage hysteresis (<0.09 V), impressive rate capability (98.6 mAh g-1 at 10 C) and long-term cycling stability (79.4% capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 5 C). This work provides insightful guidance in mitigating the voltage hysteresis and facilitating Na+ diffusion of layered oxide cathode materials to realize high-rate and high-energy SIBs.

Solid tumors lack well-defined targets for chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy. Therefore, introducing a known target molecule, CD19, into solid tumor cell lines via lentiviral transduction to investigate the cytotoxicity of CD19 CAR-T cells can potentially support CAR-T cell therapy against solid tumors. In this study, a stable colon cancer CT26 cell line, CT26-CD19-FLUC-GFP, expressing CD19, firefly luciferase (FLUC), and green fluorescent protein (GFP), was constructed using a triple-plasmid lentiviral system. The growth characteristics of this cell line were consistent with those of the CT26 cell line. Subsequent flow cytometry analysis confirmed stable expression of CD19 and GFP in CT26-CD19-FLUC-GFP cells after serial passaging up to the 5th, 10th, and 22nd generations. Further validation revealed significantly higher levels of CD19 mRNA and FLUC expression in CT26-CD19-FLUC-GFP cells continuously passaged up to the 22nd generation compared to the control CT26 cells. In comparison to T cells, CD19 CAR-T cells demonstrated substantial cytotoxicity against CT26-CD19-FLUC-GFP cells and MC38-CD19 cells. One week after intraperitoneal implantation of CT26-CD19-FLUC-GFP cells into mice, FLUC expression in the peritoneal region could be detected. These results indicate the successful establishment of a stable CT26 cell line expressing CD19-FLUC-GFP, which can be specifically targeted by CD19 CAR-T cells.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy and safety of hypomethylating agent therapy in chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). METHODS: From February 2014 to June 2021, the clinical data, efficacy, survival time and safety of CMML patients diagnosed in the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University and treated with hypomethylating agent therapy were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 25 CMML patients received hypomethylating agent therapy, including 18 cases treated with decitabine (DEC) and 7 cases treated with azacytidine (AZA) as the basic treatment. Among them, 20 patients responded, and 7 patients got complete remission (CR). All patients with CR were treated with DEC as the basic treatment. Five cases of CR occurred in the first 4 courses of treatment. After a median follow-up of 16.4 (9.4-20.5) months, 4 patients with CR progressed to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The median overall survival (OS) time of 25 CMML patients was 17.4 months (95%CI: 12.437-22.363). According to MD Anderson prognostic scoring system (MDAPS), CMML-specific prognostic scoring system (CPSS), CPSS molecular (CPSS-mol), Mayo molecular model (MMM), risk stratification of patients was performed, and the difference only between different risk stratification of MDAPS and survival time was statistically significant. Common adverse reactions of hypomethylating agent therapy in CMML patients included infection, gastrointestinal reaction, hematological toxicity, skin allergy and liver function damage. All patients' symptoms were improved after corresponding treatment. CONCLUSION: Hypomethylating agent therapy is effective and safe for CMML patients. CR mostly occurs in the first 4 courses of treatment, and hypomethylating agent therapy combined with low-dose chemotherapy can be used for patients who do not respond. Hypomethylating agent therapy can delay the disease, but can't prevent progression.

The geographic expansion of Homo sapiens populations into southeastern Europe occurred by ∼47,000 years ago (∼47 ka), marked by Initial Upper Palaeolithic (IUP) technology. H. sapiens was present in western Siberia by ∼45 ka, and IUP industries indicate early entries by ∼50 ka in the Russian Altai and 46-45 ka in northern Mongolia. H. sapiens was in northeastern Asia by ∼40 ka, with a single IUP site in China dating to 43-41 ka. Here we describe an IUP assemblage from Shiyu in northern China, dating to ∼45 ka. Shiyu contains a stone tool assemblage produced by Levallois and Volumetric Blade Reduction methods, the long-distance transfer of obsidian from sources in China and the Russian Far East (800-1,000 km away), increased hunting skills denoted by the selective culling of adult equids and the recovery of tanged and hafted projectile points with evidence of impact fractures, and the presence of a worked bone tool and a shaped graphite disc. Shiyu exhibits a set of advanced cultural behaviours, and together with the recovery of a now-lost human cranial bone, the record supports an expansion of H. sapiens into eastern Asia by about 45 ka.

PURPOSE: Return to work for cancer survivors (CSs) may be challenging, and there is a research gap in integrating the relevant experiences of the return-to-work decision-making process for CSs. Our aim was to synthesize existing qualitative research that integrates the dynamic experiences of CSs in the return-to-work decision-making process and highlights the factors influencing the return-to-work decisions of CSs. METHODS: We retrieved qualitative studies on a relevant theme published in the PubMed, EBSCO, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases since construction to December 2023. Literature screening, quality evaluation, and data analysis followed the PRISMA, Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool (2016), and thematic analysis methods to ensure study reliability. The study was registered on PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42023429623). RESULTS: Ten articles were included, and six key outcomes were identified based on Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) integration: points of concern for individuals, sense of self-efficacy, outcome expectations, work perception and belonging, medical advice and guidance, and effects of the external reactions. CONCLUSION: The decision-making process for CSs to return to work is affected by various personal and external factors. Effectively addressing personal appearance, financial, and emotional issues can enhance self-efficacy of CSs. Improving external perceptions of cancer patients and enhancing social support in the workplace and medical settings can help CSs make informed decisions regarding their return to work. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: The decision of CSs to return to work is a result of integrating personal, job, and medical care considerations. These findings contribute to the development of future interventions for CSs' return-to-work decisions that target an array of potential factors.

Artemisia argyi (A. argyi), a plant with a longstanding history as a raw material for traditional medicine and functional diets in Asia, has been used traditionally to bathe and soak feet for its disinfectant and itch-relieving properties. Despite its widespread use, scientific evidence validating the antifungal efficacy of A. argyi water extract (AAWE) against dermatophytes, particularly Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Microsporum gypseum, remains limited. This study aimed to substantiate the scientific basis of the folkloric use of A. argyi by evaluating the antifungal effects and the underlying molecular mechanisms of its active subfraction against dermatophytes. The results indicated that AAWE exhibited excellent antifungal effects against the three aforementioned dermatophyte species. The subfraction AAWE6, isolated using D101 macroporous resin, emerged as the most potent subfraction. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of AAWE6 against T. rubrum, M. gypseum, and T. mentagrophytes were 312.5, 312.5, and 625 µg·mL-1, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results and assays of enzymes linked to cell wall integrity and cell membrane function indicated that AAWE6 could penetrate the external protective barrier of T. rubrum, creating breaches ("small holes"), and disrupt the internal mitochondrial structure ("granary"). Furthermore, transcriptome data, quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR), and biochemical assays corroborated the severe disruption of mitochondrial function, evidenced by inhibited tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and energy metabolism. Additionally, chemical characterization and molecular docking analyses identified flavonoids, primarily eupatilin (131.16 ± 4.52 mg·g-1) and jaceosidin (4.17 ± 0.18 mg·g-1), as the active components of AAWE6. In conclusion, the subfraction AAWE6 from A. argyi exerts antifungal effects against dermatophytes by disrupting mitochondrial morphology and function. This research validates the traditional use of A. argyi and provides scientific support for its anti-dermatophytic applications, as recognized in the Chinese patent (No. ZL202111161301.9).

In recent years, increasing interest has focused on natural components extracted from plants, among which plant polysaccharides as natural immunomodulators that can promote animal immunity. The present study was performed to investigate the effect of feed supplement Pseudostellaria Heterophylla Polysaccharide (PHP) on serum Immunoglobulins, T lymphocyte subpopulations, Cytokines and Lysozyme (LZM) activity in chicks. In addition, the influence of PHP on splenic gene expression was investigated by transcriptome sequencing. Four hundred 7-day-old Gushi cocks were randomly divided into four groups in a completely randomized design. The chicks were fed with a basal diet supplemented with 0 (CON-A), 100 (PHP-L), 200 (PHP-M) and 400 (PHP-H) mg/kg PHP. Blood and spleen samples were collected from 6 randomly selected chicks in each group at 14, 21, 28, and 35 days of age. The results showed that compared to the CON-A group, the PHP-M group exhibited significant increases in the levels of IgA, IgG, IgM, CD3, and LZM in the serum at 14, 21, 28, and 35 days (P < 0.05), and at 28 d, there was a significant quadratic relationship between the levels of dietary PHP and the levels of IgG, IgM, IFN-γ, IL-2, CD3, and LZM. Furthermore, a total of 470 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in spleen from PHP-M and CON-A at 28 d. These DEGs were significantly enriched in the Phagosome, Intestinal immune network for IgA production and Cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction pathways. The present investigation highlights the ameliorating effect of dietary PHP on immunological variables and spleen of chicks, the study suggests that PHP supplementation can enhance immunity and positively impact spleen mRNA expression in chicks.
