RESUMO

AIM: Many people see nursing as a high-pressure, high-risk profession. Therefore, job burnout among nursing staff has become an important topic of study and has received widespread attention worldwide. This research intended to evaluate the frequency of and variables related with work burnout among nurses in public hospitals in China. DESIGN: Using a multistage random sample procedure, a cross-sectional survey was carried out in the eastern, central and western areas of China. METHODS: The Maslach Inventory-Human Service Survey and demographic information made up the two sections of the questionnaire. Of the 5250 questionnaires sent, 4865 were deemed legitimate, yielding an effective response rate of 92.67%. A linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the variables linked to nursing work burnout. RESULTS: Among the 4865 nurses, women accounted for 97.4% of the survey respondents, most of whom were aged 26-35 years. Results showed that the total scores of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and reduced personal accomplishment (PA) were 20.02 ± 12.04, 4.78 ± 5.54 and 34.42 ± 10.32 respectively. 50.7% of subjects obtained high or moderated scores on EE, 32.8% of subjects obtained high or moderated scores on DP and 80.4% of subjects obtained low or moderated scores on PA. Age, department, position, post-establishment, work shift type in recent months, overtime times in recent months and night shift frequency in recent months were negatively correlated with EE, and child status, monthly income, working days per week and sleep quality in recent 1 month were positively correlated with it (F = 141.827, P < 0.01, R2 = 0.243). Age, gender, department, post-establishment, overtime hours in recent months and night shift frequency in recent months were negatively correlated with DP, and child status and sleep quality in the last 1 month were positively correlated with it (F = 78.794, p < 0.01, R2 = 0.115). Child status, years of nursing work and sleep quality in the last 1 month were negatively correlated with PA, whereas age, position, work shift type in recent months and night shift frequency in recent months were positively correlated with it (F = 67.981, p < 0.01, R2 = 0.089).

BACKGROUND: Individuals may be more likely to engage in NSSI due to negative cognitive bias, while the use of negative emotional regulation mechanisms may further contribute to NSSI. Currently, there is a dearth of studies regarding the correlation among the three variables. METHOD: The study employed convenience sampling to collect data via online platforms from a total of 572 college students in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China, over the period of January 2024 to February 2024. The questionnaires comprise the Non-Adaptive Cognitive Emotion Srategy Regulation Subscale, the Negative Cognitive Processing Bias Questionnaire, and the NSSI Questionnaire. OUTCOME: Negative cognitive bias significantly and directly influences NSSI, as indicated by a beta coefficient of 0.3788 and a confidence interval of [0.2878, 0.4698]. The existence of negative cognitive bias significantly enhances the impact of non-adaptive cognitive emotion control approaches (ß = 0.5613, CI [0.4808, 0.6418]). Non-adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies showed a significant effect on NSSI, as indicated by a beta coefficient of 0.2033 and a confidence interval of [0.0942, 0.3125]. The non-adaptive cognitive emotion control strategy serves as an intermediary between negative cognitive bias and NSSI, explaining 30.12% of the overall impact. IN CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that non-adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies play a partially moderating role in the relationship between negative cognitive bias and NSSI among nursing students. We emphasize the importance of non-adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies, negative cognitive biases, and NSSI among nursing students. In order to reduce the occurrence of NSSI, it is important for schools, families, and teachers to work together closely and implement a well-organized and efficient intervention to protect the mental well-being of nursing students.

BACKGROUND: Given the importance of perceptions of decent work for nursing students' future career choices, we attempted to determine potential classifications and characteristics of nursing students' perceptions of decent work so that targeted interventions could be developed. METHODS: A convenience sample of 1004 s- to fourth-year nursing students completed the General Information Questionnaire, Self-Regulatory Fatigue Scale, Occupational Identity Questionnaire, and Decent Work Perceptions Scale in a cross-sectional survey in Heilongjiang Province, China, resulting in 630 valid questionnaires with a valid return rate of 62.75%. Nursing students' perceptions of decent work were defined using descriptive and regression analysis. RESULTS: Latent profile analysis (LPA) identified three subgroups: low perceived decent work group, medium perceived decent work group, and high perceived decent work group, accounting for 4.76%, 69.37%, and 25.87% of the sample, respectively. The results of unordered multiclass logistic regression show that nursing students with relatively low levels of perceived decent work are more likely to have a low professional identity, a lack of respect for nursing seniors, an involuntary choice of nursing major, and a low family income. CONCLUSION: Different types of nursing students have different perceptions of decent work, and these universities and related departments can use different educational guidance strategies.

BACKGROUND: Workplace safety is a key issue in health care. However, workplace violence represents a serious threat to workplace safety and has become a global public health problem. Workplace violence may also lead to the psychological depletion of healthcare workers. Previous studies, although cross-sectional, did not use methods such as propensity score matching to assess the potential causality of workplace violence on mental health. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of workplace violence on depression and anxiety symptoms by propensity score matching, and to explore the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in physicians and nurses. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 3000 physicians and nurses in 15 public hospitals in Heilongjiang and Beijing provinces using a purposive sampling method. METHODS: Individual baseline characteristics and outcomes were compared across workplace violence and non-workplace violence groups using Pearson's Chi-squared tests for categorical variables and Mann-Whitney U tests for all non-parametric continuous variables. Propensity score matching was used to compare depression and anxiety symptoms in physicians and nurses who had experienced workplace violence with the symptoms of those who had not. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to analyse the associated factors of depression and anxiety symptoms. RESULTS: A total of 2637 participants were involved in this study: 1264 (47.9%) were assigned to the exposed group, and 1373 (52.1%) to the non-exposed group. The prevalence of workplace violence among physicians and nurses in the past year was 47.9% (1264/2637). Before matching, the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in physicians and nurses was 58.8% and 39.7%, respectively. Participants who experienced physical and non-physical violence were more likely to suffer from depression symptoms (odds ratios 1.999, 95% confidence interval: 1.497-2.670), and anxiety symptoms (odds ratios 1.999, 95% confidence interval: 1.497-2.670) than those who had not. Participants' age, education levels, and occupation types were common influencing factors of depression and anxiety symptoms. The results also showed that nurses are more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression symptoms than physicians. CONCLUSIONS: It is necessary to develop effective control strategies at the individual, hospital and national levels to protect health care workers from workplace violence. When healthcare workers experience workplace violence, it is important to pay attention to their emotional reactions and to provide them with support in order to avoid adverse impacts on mental health. Further practices and research initiatives to examine the longitudinal relation among workplace violence, anxiety, and depression are recommended.

BACKGROUND: The family doctor system has developed rapidly all over the world, and in the past few years, China has actively explored family doctor-type contracted services. This study aimed to explore the related factors of Contracted Family Doctors Services (CFDS) from the perspectives of medical staff and consumers, and to provide a stronger basis for the development and promotion of CFDS. METHODS: A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods were used in this study. A self-reported questionnaire was designed through a literature analysis, group discussions, expert consultations and a pre-investigation, and conducted among community health service providers in 12 community health service centres across four provinces of China. A total of 389 participants participated, and 320 valid questionnaires were obtained, with an effective response rate of 82.3%. A total of 36 consumers participated in in-depth interviews, and the effective rate was 100.0%. An exploratory factor analysis, a confirmatory factor analysis, inductive methods, and expert consultations were used to analyse the related factors of CFDS. RESULTS: The related factors of CFDS from the perspectives of medical staff were divided into four dimensions, with the following weighting coefficients: national government factors (31.9%), community health service agency factors (24.7%), consumer-related factors (22.6%), and contracted doctor-related factors (20.8%). The related factors of CFDS from the perspectives of consumers were divided into four dimensions, with the following frequency sequence: national government factors, contract doctor-related factors, community health service agency factors, and consumers-related factors. National government factors played an important role in CFDS from the perspectives of medical staff and consumers. CONCLUSIONS: The related factors of CFDS were the same from the perspective of medical staff and consumers, but the weight of each factor was different. The development of CFDS is inseparable from the support of policies. It is suggested that the government should strengthen the publicity of CFDS, expand the coverage, introduce personalised contract programs that meet the needs of different groups, and promote the rapid development of CFDS.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study to investigate the prevalence of workplace violence (WPV) in nurses in hospitals in China, and its influence on nurses' mental health. METHODS: A cross-sectional, anonymous survey was conducted with 886 nurses (effective response rate: 87.46%) from Heilongjiang Province of China. RESULTS: Findings revealed that 595 of the 886 participating nurses (67.2%) were exposed to different levels of WPV. Further, WPV was correlated positively with nurses' anxiety (r=0.256, P<0.01) and depression (r=0.131, P<0.01) levels. In addition, this survey demonstrated that service years (r=0.263, P<0.01) played a moderating role in the relationship between WPV and anxiety, and gender (r=0.135, P<0.01) played a moderating role in the association between WPV and depression. CONCLUSIONS: WPV is an extensive problem in the work setting of nurses and it poses a major threat to Chinese nurses. Chinese nurses encounter hospital workplace violence frequently, and WPV has a considerably negative impact on the mental health and well-being of the nurses. It is critical to establish a more secure working environment for Chinese nursing staff to minimize the health threats caused by the negative outcomes associated with WPV, such as symptoms caused by anxiety and depression. This study also confirmed that new nurses and female nurses were more likely to be affected by WPV. Thus, addressing WPV should be one of the top concerns for both the government and the society.

Quality of life (QOL) throughout menopause has become an outcome variable requiring measurement in clinical care. Staff nurses can provide earlier nursing during the menopausal transition (MT) stage. The purpose of this study was to describe the changes of QOL in different stages of the MT according to The Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop (STRAW) in Chinese women in community settings. Prospective longitudinal study design was used to analyze QOL of 327 community women age 30-65years old. They were followed up at 1-year. An instrument including the Chinese version of the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire was used to obtain data. A gradual decline in QOL was seen from premenopausal to menopausal transition (MT) and in postmenopausal women. Significant differences were observed in vasomotor, physical and sexual scores at baseline and follow-up (P<0.05). Significant differences in vasomotor scores were observed between baseline and follow-up for women in the premenopausal and Late MT stages (P<0.05). There were significant differences in psychosocial and physical scores between baseline and follow-up in the Late MT stage (P<0.05). Menopause might have a negative impact on QOL independent of age in community-based women in China. There seemed to be a potential model of the relationship of menopause status to change in QOL, but this needs supporting evidence from longer longitudinal studies.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the interrelationships between workplace violence, thriving at work and turnover intention among Chinese nurses and to explore the action mechanism among these variables. BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is a dangerous occupational hazard globally, and it is pervasive in the health service industry. As a corollary, workplace violence may produce many negative outcomes among nursing staff. Consequently, it hinders nurses' professional performance and reduces nursing quality. DESIGN: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted. METHODS: A total of 1,024 nurses from 26 cities in China were recruited from February-May 2016. An anonymous questionnaire was used in this survey. Participants' completed data were collected using a demographics form and a 26-item questionnaire consisting of scales addressing workplace violence, thriving at work, job satisfaction, subjective well-being and turnover intention. To evaluate multivariate relationships, some multiple linear hierarchical regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: Workplace violence significantly negatively influenced nurses' job satisfaction and thriving at work, and significantly positively influenced nurses' turnover intention. Job satisfaction significantly predicted thriving at work and turnover intention. Job satisfaction not only fully mediated the relationship between workplace violence and thriving at work, but also partially mediated the relationship between workplace violence and turnover intention. Subjective well-being moderated the relationship between workplace violence and job satisfaction and the relationship between workplace violence and nurses' turnover intention. CONCLUSIONS: Adverse effects of workplace violence were demonstrated in this study. Decreases in job satisfaction were a vital mediating factor. The moderating effect of subjective well-being was helpful in reducing the harm of workplace violence to nurses and in decreasing their turnover intention. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Workplace violence and its negative impact on nursing work should not go unnoticed by nursing managers. Nurses' subjective well-being is critical in controlling and mitigating the adverse effects of workplace violence.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to build a model to explain the relationships between social support, uncontrollability appraisal, adaptive coping, and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among cancer patients in China. METHODS: The participants who were cancer patients in a cancer hospital in China filled out a survey. The final sample size was 201. Structural equation modeling was used to build a model explaining PTG. RESULTS: Structural equation modeling results indicated that higher levels of social support predicted higher levels of adaptive coping, higher levels of uncontrollability appraisal predicted lower levels of adaptive coping, and higher levels of adaptive coping predicted higher levels of PTG. Moreover, adaptive coping was a mediator between social support and growth, as well as a mediator between uncontrollability and growth. The direct effects of social support and uncontrollability on PTG were insignificant. CONCLUSIONS: The model demonstrated the relationships between social support, uncontrollability appraisal, adaptive coping, and PTG. It could be concluded that uncontrollability appraisal was a required but not sufficient condition for PTG. Neither social support nor uncontrollability appraisal had direct influence on PTG. However, social support and uncontrollability might indirectly influence PTG, through adaptive coping. It implies that both internal factors (eg, cognitive appraisal and coping) and external factors (eg, social support) are required in order for growth to happen.

OBJECTIVE: The study is to examine the relationships between perceived initial cancer disclosure communication with doctors, levels of hope, and levels of trust in doctors among cancer patients in China. METHODS: A total number of 192 cancer inpatients in a cancer hospital in China were surveyed. Perceived disclosure strategies, levels of hope, levels of trust in their doctors, as well as the demographic information were obtained from the participants. RESULTS: In addition to age, patients who had higher levels of perceived emotional support from doctors, or higher levels of perceived personalized disclosure from doctors, or higher levels of perceived discussion of multiple treatment plans with doctors were more likely to have higher levels of trust in doctors. In addition to perceived health status, perceived emotional support from doctors significantly predicted participants' levels of hope. That is, patients who had higher higher levels of perceived doctors' emotional support were more likely to have higher levels of hope. Key disclosure person was a marginally significant variable, that is, patients who were mainly disclosed by family members might have higher levels of hope compared with patients who were mainly disclosed by doctors. CONCLUSIONS: When communicating with a cancer patient, doctors might not ignore the importance of emotional support during cancer diagnosis communication. Doctors might want to involve family and collaborate with family to find out ways of personalized disclosure. During the communication process, doctors could provide their patients with multiple treatment options and discuss the benefits and side effects of each treatment. OBJECTIVES: To examine Chinese nurses' practice of reading and understanding scientific literature and elucidate the motivating and deterring factors. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study conducted between March and June 2015. A random sample of 853 full-time registered nurses from three tertiary and two secondary hospitals in China filled out a set of self-administered questionnaires, including literature habit questionnaire(41 items), the situational motivation scale and the socio-demographic and professional characteristics questionnaire(15 items). RESULTS: Significant majority (89.2%) of the respondents reported perception of barriers to keeping up to date with literature. The language barrier was the most prominent, followed by poor presentation and readability of articles. Using simpler language when writing articles, improving ones' foreign language proficiency and getting education or training on nursing research were raised as the top facilitators. Additionally, reading and understanding literature was significantly associated with the nurses' educational background, motivation, genders and work settings. CONCLUSIONS: The survey of the current status of literature education among Chinese nurses suggests that providing protected time, training for critical thinking, and incentive mechanisms will help improve nurses' engagement in literature and create a culture of academic inquiry.
