RESUMO

Materials like carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide are commonly used for vital teeth bleaching. However, there have been concerns regarding their effect on composite-to-bleached enamel bonding strength. The study investigated the impact of organic and antioxidant agents on composite bond strength in bleached enamel with different dental adhesive solvents. Human third molar teeth were sectioned into buccal and lingual halves. The two main adhesive solvent groups evaluated were acetone and alcohol. Each main group was divided into six groups. The positive control group received no bleaching, the negative control group consisted of bleaching with no surface deoxidization; and other experimental categories involved post-bleach treatments with 95% ethanol, sodium ascorbate (10%), acetone solution, or sodium fluoride solution (1.1%). Following the surface treatment and enamel bonding procedure, nano-hybrid composite cylinders measuring 3 × 2 mm were directly cured over the bleached enamel substrate. The shear bond test was performed after 24-h storage and 12,000 thermocycles on a universal testing machine. In this study, one-way ANOVA was used along with Tukey's HSD tests at a significance level of 0.05. The negative control groups showed significantly lower bond strength than the positive control group. Ethanol surface treatment had superior mean bonding strength in acetone and alcohol-based adhesive solvent groups. The utilization of sodium ascorbate for surface treatment resulted in a significant enhancement of adhesion between the composite material and bleached enamel surface. Sodium fluoride application showed no significant recovery in shear bond strength in both dental adhesive groups. It was concluded that hydrogen peroxide severely compromised the immediate bond strength of composite resin. Surface treatment of bleached enamel with ethanol, sodium ascorbate, and acetone solutions is an effective option for restoring bond strength.

BACKGROUND: Developing efficient bonding techniques for orthodontic brackets and all-ceramic materials continues to pose a clinical difficulty. This study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strengths (SBS) of metal and ceramic brackets to various all-ceramic CAD-CAM materials, such as lithium disilicate CAD (LDS-CAD), polymer-infiltrated ceramic (PIC), zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass ceramic (ZLS), and 5YTZP zirconia after different surface treatments and thermal cycling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The samples were divided into two groups to be bonded with ceramic and metal lower incisor brackets. Each group was subdivided into a control group devoid of any surface treatment, 10% HF acid (HFA) etching, ceramic etch & prime (MEP), Al2O3 air abrasion, and medium grit diamond bur roughening. After surface treatment, brackets were bonded with composite resin cement, thermal cycled, and tested for shear bond strength. The failed surfaces were evaluated with a digital microscope to analyse the type of failure. The data were statistically analysed using a one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The highest mean bond strengths were found with HFA etching in LDS-CAD (13.17 ± 0.26 MPa) and ZLS (12.85 0.52 MPa). Diamond bur recorded the lowest mean bond strength roughening across all the ceramic groups. There were significant differences in mean shear bond values per surface treatment (p < 0.001) and ceramic materials. CONCLUSION: Among the surface treatment protocols evaluated, HFA etching and MEP surface treatment resulted in enhanced bond strength of both ceramic and metal brackets to CAD-CAM all ceramic materials.

Increased utilization of all ceramic restorations for aesthetic consideration in combination with routine adult orthodontic practice has led to numerous clinical challenges. Obtaining adequate bond strength between the orthodontic bracket and all-ceramic restoration and damage to the ceramic surface during the bracket debonding procedure needs to be better understood. This study analyzed the surface texture and color change of glazed and bracket-debonded ceramic CAD-CAM materials and the efficiency of porcelain polishing systems in restoring surface morphology and color. A total of 30 rectangular test specimens from each lithium disilicate CAD (LD-CAD), polymer-infiltrated ceramic (PICN), zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass ceramic (ZLS), and 5YTZP zirconia (5YZP) were prepared. The ceramic samples were embedded within acrylic resin, and baseline surface roughness and color were recorded using an optical profilometer and a reflected color spectrophotometer. The porcelain samples were bonded with lower incisor ceramic brackets. The samples were thermocycled 2000 times between 5 and 55 °C. Afterward, the brackets were peeled with bracket-removing pliers. The resin adhesive from the debonded surface was eliminated with tungsten carbide bur, and samples were randomly divided into three subgroups of (n = 10) to be polished with Diapol-twist (DT), a Keramik-Politur 4313B Komet polishing kit (KK), and a Horico diamond polisher (HDP). The polished surface roughness and color were recorded. The data were statistically analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance at p < 0.05. The debonded porcelain surfaces across the groups displayed significantly higher mean surface roughness (Ra) compared to glazed surfaces. The debonded 5YZP showed the least Ra at 0.661 (0.09), while the highest Ra was recorded by PICN at 4.057 (0.82). All of the polishing systems evaluated in the study significantly reduced the surface roughness. However, they were unsuccessful in regaining the surface topography of the glazed surface. The flexible discs (DT) produced the smoothest surface, followed by the diamond-impregnated rubber points (KK). Unpolished porcelain surfaces had a discernable mean color difference from glazed surfaces. Polished surfaces from the different polishing systems among the all-ceramic groups achieved a clinically acceptable mean color difference. Polishing debonded rough porcelain surfaces is imperative, and flexible discs performed better in all of the tested CAD-CAM ceramic materials.

Background and Objectives: Bacteria and its remnants beneath the restorations predispose the tooth to secondary caries and pulpal pathology. Hence, various chemical antibacterial agents are suggested to disinfect the prepared tooth structure before the definitive restorative procedure. This study aimed to investigate the effects of chemical disinfectant solutions on the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) and microhardness of total-etch and self-etch resin-infiltrated human dentin. Materials and Methods: 100 caries-free intact permanent third molar teeth were vertically sectioned into the buccal and lingual half. All these specimens were mounted on acrylic resin and underlying dentin surfaces were exposed by grinding. Samples were randomly divided into five groups [n = 20] following total-etch and self-etch adhesive protocol. Teeth samples were divided according to surface treatment, as Group I (Control-CNT), Group II (2% chlorhexidine-CHX), Group III (5.25% sodium hypochlorite-NaOCl), Group IV (17% ethylenediaminetetraacetate acid­EDTA) and Group V (10% povidone iodine-PVI). A randomly selected 10 samples from each subgroup were used for µSBS and microhardness tests. After surface treatment and bonding procedure, nono-hybrid composite cylinders with a 3-mm diameter and 2-mm height were directly cured over the dentin substrate. The samples for µSBS were subjected to 5000 thermocycles and tested using a universal testing machine. Microhardness was assessed using a micro-indenter instrument, data were statistically analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance and Tukey HSD tests at p < 0.05. Results: Amongst the chemical disinfectant assessed, 2% CHX did not affect µSBS and produced a marginal reduction in dentin microhardness compared to the control group. The 5.25% NaOCl and 17% EDTA significantly compromised the microhardness of the dentin substrate. Meanwhile, 10% PVI surface treatment resulted in a substantial reduction in µSBS between composite and dentin. Conclusions: CHX with preservation of bonding to dentin and insignificant negative effect on dentin microhardness is a safe option for tooth disinfection.

Lack of basic knowledge about the external and internal anatomies of the root canal system and common variations in teeth may lead to various procedural errors or treatment failure. In this study, the root canal configurations of mandibular incisors and the symmetry of the contralateral incisors of Saudi Arabian subpopulations were analyzed and determined using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). A retrospective evaluation of 700 patients was conducted, and 1260 fully developed permanent mandibular central incisors were assessed. The number of root canals was determined, and the internal root canal anatomies were categorized based on Ahmed et al.'s criteria. The CBCT images were independently evaluated by 2 trained dentists and an endodontist. The data were assessed using the chi-square and one-way analysis of variance tests. All the mandibular central incisors included in the study were single-rooted. According to Ahmed et al's classification system, the most common classification (82.6%) was 1ManA1 (Vertucci type I), followed by 1ManA1-2-1 (Vertucci type III; 13%). Second canals were more frequently recorded in the male participants than in the female participants. The root canal configuration between contralateral incisors was largely symmetrical. Most of the mandibular incisors in the examined Saudi Arabian population had a single canal. Nevertheless, a substantial number of patients had a complex root morphology. Hence, CBCT can be utilized as a potential supplementary tool during root canal treatment.

The impact of induced (smoking) and metabolic stress (diabetes) on dental stem cells with respect to pre-impact consideration on differentiation and bone formation were investigated. The progenitor stem cells isolated from dental pulp, follicle and gingival tissues were phenotyped and subjected to nicotine and high glucose stress mimicking the smoking and diabetic condition in-vitro. The results showed that the cellular viability post treatment with 100 µM nicotine and 10uM glucose was about 86% to 89% respectively in all the three cell types while about 73% in combined nicotine and glucose treatment. No variation in the expression of pro-inflammatory TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-12 in all the three cell types were noticed. The observed viability in nicotine treated cells were due to elevated IL-6, IL-10 while in glucose was due to brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). Higher expression of IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, TGF-ß and heme oxygenase -1 (HO-1) were found high in both stressors treated cells. Differentiation and mineralization markers Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Collagenase I (COL1), Osteocalcin, Runt related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), Osteopontin and Bone sialoprotein were expressed in the dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and gingival mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs) at varying levels post nicotine or glucose treatment while not significantly observed in dental follicular stem cells (DFSCs). Therefore, it is evident that the stem cells of varied dental origin responded to the stress are more or less uniform with physiological delay in differentiation into osteoblast. It is evident from the study that, the metabolic or induced stress subverts the process of regenerative healing by mesenchymal stromal cells with their anatomical niche.

Background and Objectives: One requirement for the cemented post is the light transmittance on its entire length up to the deepest portion of a root canal to ensure the complete polymerization of resin cement. This study aimed to determine the light transmission ability in different aesthetic posts at different depths and its effect on the push-out bond strength and microhardness of luting cement at the corresponding interface. Materials and Methods: Twenty endodontic posts from glass fiber posts (GFP), zirconia ceramic posts (ZCP), and highly translucent zirconium oxide posts (HTZP) were sequentially sectioned into 12.8 and 4 mm lengths after recording the light intensity using a dental radiometer. Sixty single rooted premolar teeth root canals were treated and implanted vertically in a resin block. The post space was prepared and cemented with GFP, ZCP, and HTZP posts with twenty samples each. The root portion of teeth samples were sectioned into cervical, middle, and apical portion. A universal testing machine was utilized for the push-out bond strength test for the first ten samples from each group. The remaining ten samples from each group were used for the microhardness test using a micro-indenter instrument. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way Analysis of variance and Tukey HSD tests at p < 0.05. Results: The GFP endodontic postpresented with significant highest light translucency compared to HTZP, which was significantly higher than ZCP. GFP posts showed significantly higher bond strength per unit area compared to ZCP at analogous cross sections. The hardness of luting cement was also significantly higher amongst all tested endodontic posts. Conclusions: GFP high light translucency enhanced the curing of the luting resin cement that resulted in harder cement and a stronger bond supported by hardness and push-out tests. These findings suggest that GFP is preferred to be used with light-cured luting cements for restoration of endodontically treated teeth.

BACKGROUND: The aesthetics and strength of anterior porcelain layered zirconia (PLZ) crowns are mainly affected by the zirconia (Zr) coping design. There is a need for a modified design to enhance aesthetics with strength. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture resistance of anterior PLZ crowns having modified CAD-CAM Zr coping designs (in terms of thickness and marginal collar designs) with standard Zr copings. METHODS: Fifty PLZ crowns were fabricated and divided into two groups: Gr 1: Standard Zr Coping (SZC) (control gr) with 0.5 mm thickness (Facial-F, Mesial-M, Distal-D, incisal-I, and Palatal-P) without a collar; Gr 2: Collar Zr Coping (CZC) (test gr) with 2.5 mm collar height on M, D, P and 0.2 mm F and variable facial wall thickness. Subgroups: Gr 2a: (CZC-0.5 mm) facial wall thickness 0.5 mm; Gr 2b: (CZC-0.4 mm) facial wall thickness 0.4 mm; Gr 2c: (CZC-0.3 mm) facial wall thickness 0.3 mm; Gr 2d: (CZC-0.2 mm) facial wall thickness 0.2 mm. The fracture load was determined and analysed using One-way ANOVA and Dunnet test. RESULTS: The minimum fracture load was 927.36 ± 127.80 N observed for Gr 2c (CZC at 0.3 mm) while the maximum fracture load was 1373.61 ± 146.54 N observed for Gr 2a (CZC at 0.5 mm). A highly significant difference in mean fracture load among various Zr coping groups (p< 0.001) was determined. CONCLUSIONS: Novel Zr coping design for anterior PLZ crowns can provide better aesthetics with strength. Reducing the thickness of Zr coping in the aesthetic zone to 0.2 mm and providing a modified collar design (2.5 mm collar height on M, D, P, and 0.2 mm F) would provide strength without jeopardizing aesthetics.

BACKGROUND: An occurrence of secondary caries around the indirect restoration margin is reported to remain a leading cause of failures. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to test the interfacial microleakage of conventional glass-ionomer (CGI), resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) and Nano-hybrid composite (CR) restorations at a full veneer margin crown. METHODS: Ninety human extracted molar teeth were divided into three groups (n = 30). Each group was subdivided into three subgroups (n = 10) according to the extent of the structural defects; The structural defect in G1 had a depth of 1.5 mm, width and length at 2 mm and 1 mm intrusion within the crown cervical margin. The corresponding structural defect dimension values for G2 were 2, 5, 4 and 2 mm with defects extending onto the root structure. Meanwhile, G3: structural deficiency of 2 mm depth, 3 mm width and 3 mm length and with 1.5 mm extension into the prepared teeth. These structural defects in each subgroup were restored with CGI, RMGI and CR. Artificial carious lesion formation was induced at the cervical finish line with a demineralizing solution. The artificial carious lesions were restored as per the group distribution. Subsequently, teeth samples were prepared and cemented with Nickel-chromium full coverage restorations utilizing glass-ionomer luting cement. Teeth samples were thermocycled, isolated with nail varnish, and immersed in 0.1% methylene blue for 24 h. The teeth samples were sectioned longitudinally, dye penetration was evaluated with a stereomicroscope. The data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. RESULTS: CGI-G1 recorded the highest micro-leakage score at 1.450; while CR-G3 recorded the least score (0.350). At a cementum-restoration interface, CR-G1 (0.850) documented the lowest micro-leakage; RMGI-G3 had a greater value at 1.700. CONCLUSIONS: The hybrid CR could be effectively used to restore the restoration of a marginal gap around crown margins.

PURPOSE: Dental implant (DI) therapy is in high demand and can only be rendered efficiently to graduating dentists by effective teaching methodologies. This study aimed to assess the perceptions and attitudes of dental graduates towards predoctoral DI education techniques and rehabilitation by DI. METHODS: A total of 26 well-structured questionnaires were distributed to 120 final-year students. Modified advanced teaching methodologies such as e-learning, small-group teaching-problem-based learning (SGT-PBL), and team-based learning were implemented for teaching DI. Its effects were assessed using a questionnaire set: the first section (DI Rehabilitation) with 12 questions and the second (DI teaching methods) with 14 questions. Statistical analysis was done using the Chi-square test, and a P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The response rate was 95.83%. Seventy-five percent of the students recommended DI for patients, and 78% of them agreed to it themselves. On comparing teaching methods for DI, on and before level 12, small-group teaching (PBL) was significantly at a higher proportion (P = 0.002), followed by seminars (P < 0.001). Students preferred small-group teaching PBL (60%), followed by e-learning (15%) and demonstration (10%). Ninety-two percent of the students agreed that DI is an important subject in the "bachelor of dental surgery" (BDS) program, but 78% of them felt that time was insufficient to complete the DI syllabus. CONCLUSIONS: The modified teaching methodologies used at level 12 for teaching DI enhanced students' interest and knowledge. The SGT-PBL teaching method was the most preferred. It is recommended that dental implantology topics should be started early in the undergraduate curriculum, and the topics should be widely divided throughout BDS.

BACKGROUND: Dental esthetic materials are constantly introduced to meet the increasing esthetic demand in contemporary dental practice. OBJECTIVE: To test the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth (ETT) restored with different esthetic post materials like fiber-reinforced composite post (FRC), polyether ether ketone (PEEK), and polymer infiltrated ceramic (PIC). METHODS: Thirty-six human root canal treated single-rooted premolar teeth were decoronated 3 mm above the cemento-enamel junction and prepared to receive the post. They were randomly divided into three groups (n= 12) to be restored with FRC, PEEK, and PIC. After appropriate surface treatment, they were cemented with self-adhesive luting cement and restored with full veneer crowns. The samples were thermocycled, subjected to a compressive static load at 45∘ angulation until fracture. Obtained data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post hoc comparison test. RESULTS: The results indicate that the ETT restored with PEEK post had the maximum fracture load (1929.94 N), followed by PIC endodontic post group (1810.65N), and FRC post (1715.68N). Meanwhile, ETT restored with FRC showed a predominantly favorable fracture, whereas PEEK restored teeth had a more unfavorable fracture. CONCLUSION: Of all the esthetic post materials, the group for which PEEK endodontic post was used displayed higher fracture resistance.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to compare the fracture strength of Molar endocrowns fabricated from different all-ceramic materials and various preparation designs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety extracted human molar teeth were root canal treated and randomly divided into three groups according to the all ceramic materials used for fabrication of the endocrowns (n = 30): (1) Lithium disilicate (IPS e.max Press); (2) Polymer infiltrated ceramic (Vita Enamic); (3) High translucency zirconia (Ceramill Zolid HT). Each group was subdivided into 3 subgroups (n = 10) according to the preparation design as 2 mm occlusal reduction, 4.5 mm occlusal reduction, and 4.5 mm occlusal reduction with 2 mm radicular extension. The endocrowns from each material were fabricated and surface treated according to the manufacturer's recommendations. After cementation with self-adhesive resin luting cement, the specimens were stored in a humid environment for 72 hours and subsequently subjected to 5000 thermal cycles. After, a compressive, static-axial load was applied using a universal testing machine until failure. Load-to-failure was recorded (N) and the specimens were examined under a stereomicroscope to determine the failure type. The data was statistically analyzed using One-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The Lithium Disilicate endocrowns recorded the higher mean fracture strength for 4.5 mm occlusal thickness and 2 mm radicular extension at 3770.28 N and 3877.40 correspondingly. The High translucency zirconia endocrowns at conventional 2 mm thickness showed the highest mean fracture load (3533.34 N). Even though polymer infiltrated ceramic endocrowns displayed comparatively lesser fracture load; they recorded the predominantly favorable fractures. CONCLUSIONS: Increased occlusal thickness showed a significant improvement in fracture strength of lithium disilicate and polymer infiltrated ceramic molar endocrowns. Although the 2 mm radicular extension had the substantial enhancement of fracture strength in high translucency zirconia, it resulted in more unfavorable failure types.

Background and Objectives: Fractured acrylic denture base is a common occurrence in clinical practice. The effective denture repair procedure is cost-effective, time conserving, and results in lesser time without denture for the patient. Along with various reinforcements and surface modifications; different acrylic resins are investigated in improving the flexural strength of the fractured site. The aim of this study was to evaluate the flexural strength of a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture base repaired with heat-polymerized (HPA), auto-polymerized (APA) and light-polymerized acrylic (LPA) resins after thermocycling. Materials and Methods: Forty rectangular shaped (50 mm × 25 mm × 3mm) PMMA specimens were fabricated. Group 1 specimens (n = 10) were kept as controls and the remaining 30 samples were sectioned at the center with a repair site dimension of 3 mm. The samples from three groups (n = 10) were repaired with HPA, APA, and LPA resins, respectively. The specimens were thermocycled for 5000 cycles and subjected to a three-point flexural test. The maximum load required to fracture the specimens was recorded, and further analyzed with ANOVA and the Games-Howell Post hoc test at the significance level p = 0.05. Results: The average maximum load and flexural strength of the control group was 173.60 N and 13.02 Mpa and corresponding values for denture repaired with HPA was 87.36 N and 6.55 Mpa. The corresponding values for APA resin and LPA resins were 62.94 N, 57.51 N, and 4.72 Mpa, 4.06 Mpa, respectively. Conclusions: The PMMA specimens repaired with HPA resins resulted in a significantly higher load to fracture compared to APA resin and LPA resin.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians routinely encounter the endodontically treated teeth with wide flared canals and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) repair on the canal wall. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of customized glass reinforced composite (FRC) post and reshaped root canal along with different acid etching protocol of MTA surface on push-out bond strength (PBS) in flared, MTA repaired root canal. METHODS: Ninety recently extracted single-rooted premolar teeth were sequentially subjected to root canal obturation, post space preparation, flaring, and MTA application. The samples were randomly divided into 3 groups of control (no relining or reshaping), customized FRC post by relining with self-adhesive resin cement and reshaping the canal with flowable composite. Each group was subdivided into 3 subgroups (n= 10) as no surface treatment, 37% H3PO4 and 19% EDTA etching of MTA surface. Teeth samples cemented with FRC post were sectioned into 2 mm and push-out testing. RESULTS: Control group had the lowest PBS at 1.988 N. The PBS values for the groups with customized post relining were 8.489 N, 8.888 N and 7.911 N for control, H3PO4 etch and EDTA etch. The corresponding PBS values for root canal reshaping were 7.323 N, 8.318 N and 7.785 N. CONCLUSIONS: Customized FRC post with 37% H3PO4 etching is advised for the flared and MTA repaired root canals.

Background and Objectives: All-ceramic prosthesis is widely used in modern dental practice because of its improved physico-mechanical and optical properties. These restorations are exposed to coloring agents from various nutrition and beverages in the oral cavity. Long-term color stability is critical for the success of these restorative materials. The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the effect of common beverages and mouthwash on the color stability of lithium disilicate (LD), monolithic zirconia (MZ) and bilayer zirconia (BZ) surfaces. Materials and Method: Thirty disc-shaped specimens from each material were fabricated; each group was subdivided (n = 10) according to coffee, green tea and chlorhexidine immersion solutions. The baseline color of ceramic discs was recorded according to the CIE L*a*b* system with a portable spectrophotometer. The second measurement was recorded after 3000 thermocycling and immersion in coloring agents for 7 days. The mean color difference was calculated and data were compared with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney post hoc tests (0.05). Results: ΔE values for LD with the immersion of coffee, tea, and Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) were 1.78, 2.241 and 1.58, respectively. Corresponding ΔE values for MZ were 5.60, 5.19, and 4.86; marginally higher than the clinically acceptable level of 3.5. Meanwhile, BZ showed better color stability compared to MZ with ΔE values of 4.22, 2.11 and 1.43. Conclusions: Among the ceramics evaluated, LD ceramic was found to be more color stable, while MZ ceramics displayed a higher susceptibility to discoloration. MZ and BZ ceramic colors were significantly altered with coffee immersion, while LD ceramics were more affected by green tea.

Blood-saliva contamination negatively affects the bonding potential of adhesive agents. The study aimed to assess the effect of various cleaning protocols on micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) between blood-saliva-contaminated post-etched dentin and composite resin in total-etch and self-etch adhesives. The cleaning methods tested were water rinsing, 37.5% phosphoric acid (H3PO4) re-etching, 6% sodium hypochlorite (NaoCl), 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CXG), isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and pumice. Nono-hybrid composite cylinders with a 3-mm diameter and 2-mm height were directly cured over the dentin substrate, stored for 24 h, and subjected to 12,000 thermocycles. The shear force was exerted with a 200-µm knife-edged chisel-shaped head from a universal testing machine. The type of failure was assessed with stereomicroscope magnified images. The obtained data were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U post-hoc tests. Water-rinsed contaminated dentin surfaces showed substantially reduced µSBS in the total etch from 25.93 to 20.29 Mpa and the corresponding values for the one-step self-etch adhesive were 10.10 to 8.8. Re-etching with 37.5% H3Po4 resulted in a recovery of bonding potential in both total-etch (24.58 Mpa) and self-etch adhesive (9.23 Mpa). Alternately, NaoCl and pumice cleaning showed promising results for the total-etch (23.51 Mpa) and self-etch (7.79 Mpa).

Dentists routinely encounter non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) in daily clinical practices. The dental literature is contradictory regarding the occlusal etiology of NCCLs. NCCL is defined as the loss of dental structure at the cemento-enamel junction, with no association of bacteria. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of dynamic occlusal factors and dental hygiene practices with NCCLs. In total, 100 participants were selected by the random stratified sampling method, 50 each for control and NCCL groups. Information regarding oral hygiene practices, including frequency, duration, force, and technique of brushing, was recorded. Dynamic occlusal parameters like initial contact, occlusion time (OT), disocclusion time (DT), and center of force were recorded with T-scan analysis. The obtained data were analyzed with Pearson's correlation and binary logistic regression. We found that 68% of participants in the NCCL group and 31% in the control group utilized the horizontal brushing technique; 46% of NCCL group participants used hard brush against 7% of participants in the control group. The mean OT was 0.727 and 0.516 s for NCCL and control groups, respectively. The OT and left and right lateral DT were strongly related to NCCL, with r-values of 0.661, 0.642, and 0.534, respectively, with p ≤ 0.001. Using a hard toothbrush was found to be associated with NCCL. The NCCL group had extended mean occlusion time and disocclusion time in all eccentric mandibular movements.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of dynamic occlusal parameters can help dentists to understand the association of occlusion with the preferred chewing side (PCS) and enable optimal restoration of masticatory efficiency. This study evaluated the association between PCS and dynamic occlusal parameters. METHODS: One hundred participants (50 each, right and left PCS) were included in this study. PCS was determined by the visual spot-checking method, and occlusal analysis was conducted by T Scan. Occlusal parameters evaluated included initial contact, center of force, tooth contact area, occlusal interferences, and occlusal time. Data were assessed by chi-squared test and eta correlation coefficient. RESULTS: Initial contact towards the PCS was observed in 68% and 70% of right and left unilateral chewers, respectively. Likewise, center of force towards the PCS was present in 72% and 66% of right and left unilateral chewers, respectively. A larger area of tooth contact was predominant towards the PCS in 70% and 72% of right and left unilateral chewers, respectively. Chi-squared analysis showed a strong positive correlation between PCS and occlusal parameters at maximum intercuspation. Eta correlation coefficients between PCS and occlusal interferences, as well as centric and eccentric occlusion, revealed negligible associations. CONCLUSION: Dynamic occlusal parameters may be associated with PCS.

INTRODUCTION: The endodontically treated teeth (ETT) with thin remaining radicular dentin thickness are predisposed to fracture; hence it requires the diligent selection and the execution of endodontic post treatment. The objective of the study was to evaluate the reinforcing effect of both multiple fiber reinforced composite (FRC) and Ni-Cr cast metal posts at anterior and posterior regions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty recently extracted root canal treated canine and single rooted premolar teeth were used for the study. They were randomly divided into four groups (n=10) as: Group 1, single FRC post; Group 2, multiple FRC posts; Group 3, single Ni-Cr metal post, Group 4, multiple Ni-Cr posts. The posts were cemented with self-adhesive resin cement and subsequently restored with full veneer metal crown. The compressive static load at 1300 for canine and 450 for premolar was applied with the cross-head speed of 0.5mm/minute until the fracture. The obtained data was analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Pairwise comparison tests with SPSS. RESULTS: The results indicate that multiple FRC post restored canine had the maximum fracture load (1843.80±7.13 N), followed by cast multiple posts (1648.99±26.84 N), single fiber post (1623±40.31 N), and cast metal single post (1493±27.33 N). A similar trend was observed in premolar with higher max fracture load with multiple FRC posts at 1920.86±20.61 N and multiple cast metal posts at 1735.43±6.05 N. CONCLUSION: The restoration of ETT with larger canals by multiple FRC and metal posts provides substantially higher fracture resistance in comparison to wider single post.

BACKGROUND: Determining and restoring physiological vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) is the critical step during complete mouth rehabilitation. The improper VDO compromises the aesthetics, phonetics and functional efficiency of the prosthesis. Various methods are suggested to determine the accurate VDO, including the facial measurements in the clinical situations with no pre-extraction records. The generalisation of correlation between the facial measurements to VDO is criticised due to gender dimorphism and racial differences. Hence, it is prudent to verify the hypothesis of facial proportion and correlation of lower third of the face to remaining craniofacial measurements in different ethnic groups. The objective of the study was to evaluate the correlation of craniofacial measurements and OVD in the Saudi-Arabian ethnic group. METHODOLOGY: Total of 228 participants from Saudi-Arabian Ethnic group were randomly recruited in this cross-sectional study. Fifteen craniofacial measurements were recorded with modified digital Vernier callipers, and OVD was recorded at centric occlusion. The obtained data were analysed by using the Spearman's correlation and linear regression analysis. RESULTS: The Mean OVD in male participants was higher (69.25 ± 5.54) in comparison to female participants (57.41 ± 5.32). The craniofacial measurement of Exocanthion-right labial commissure and the Mesial wall of the right external auditory canal-orbitale lateral had a strong positive correlation with VDO. The strong correlation was recorded with a trichion-upper border of right eyebrow line and trichion-Nasion only in males. Meanwhile, the length of an auricle recorded the positive correlation in female participants. CONCLUSIONS: Being simple and non-invasive technique, craniofacial measurements and linear equations could be routinely utilised to determine VDO.
