RESUMO

This work examines the performance of a hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) reactive filtration (RF) process with coupled chemically enhanced secondary treatment (RECYCLE) for phosphorus removal from municipal wastewater (HFO-RF-RECYCLE). A 3-month, 0.95-ML/d (0.25-mgd) demonstration of HFO-RF-RECYCLE was performed at a municipal wastewater treatment plant equipped with oxidation ditches and secondary clarifiers. Influent to the plant averaged 6.0 mg/L phosphorus, with a tertiary effluent average of 0.011 mg/L phosphorus. Iron doses to the plant were low, at 5 mg/L. Inline recycling of HFO solution rejects to the plant influent resulted in a maximum 90.3%, dose-dependent reduction of phosphorus in the secondary effluent at 4.5 ML/d (1.2 mgd). Other results included reduction of total suspended solids and turbidity. A mass balance analysis was performed. We conclude that HFO-RF-RECYCLE may allow very low levels of phosphorus discharge from municipal wastewater treatment plants with a ferric-iron-based tertiary filtration process and residual recycling.

RESUMO

Most protocols used for open-path Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (OP/FT-IR) require that spectra be measured at a resolution of 1 cm(-1) and that the concentrations of the analytes be calculated by classical least squares regression (CLS). These specifications were largely developed for monitoring light molecules with easily resolvable rotational fine structure. For most volatile organic compounds in air, the rotational fine structure is not resolvable and better accuracy can be obtained when the spectrum is measured at lower resolution (typically 8 cm(-1)), provided that the algorithm used for quantification is partial least squares regression (PLS). By measuring the spectrum at low resolution, the need for a liquid-nitrogen-cooled mercury cadmium telluride detector is reduced and a pyroelectric detector operating at ambient temperature can be used instead. By using PLS rather than CLS, spectral features due to water vapor do not have to be compensated and a short-path background spectrum can be used, greatly simplifying field measurements.

RESUMO

Proteolytic imbalance may play a role in the pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). CLG4B, which encodes the 92-kDa form of type IV collagenase, is a candidate gene for AAA. We genotyped a polymorphic dinucleotide repeat in the 5' flanking region of CLG4B in 94 unrelated Caucasian controls and in 127 unrelated Caucasian AAA cases. Eight alleles were detected in 188 control chromosomes with an observed heterozygosity of 0.68. There was no significant difference in allele distribution between cases and controls. We genotyped the dinucleotide repeat in 10 CEPH reference pedigrees and performed pairwise linkage analysis with markers on each of the 22 human autosomes. Lod scores between 10.45 and 20.29 were observed with markers spanning chromosome region 20q11.2-q13.1. Further support for assignment of CLG4B to chromosome 20 was provided by analysis of human-rodent somatic cell hybrids. This work describes a highly polymorphic marker in the CLG4B gene and assigns this gene to chromosome 20.

RESUMO

A restraining device for nonhuman primates was designed which effectively prevented the animal from touching the eyes and thereby transferring a topically applied drug from 1 eye to the other. This permitted use of 1 eye of the same animal as a reliable control for observation of pharmacologic effects. The design permitted self-feeding by the animal. It did not produce chafing or pressure sores and resulted in no psychologic depression. The device has been used successfully for a 5-mo period.
