RESUMO

We present a novel approach to achieve n-type doping in graphene and create graphene p-n junctions through a photoinduced electron doping method using photobase generators (PBGs). The unique properties of PBGs allow us to spatially and temporally control the doping process via light activation. The selective irradiation of specific regions on the graphene film enables switching their doping from p- to n-type, as confirmed by changes in the electromotive force and Seebeck and Hall coefficients. We demonstrate a stable (over 2 months) high electron mobility exceeding 1000 cm2 V-1s-1 using Hall effect measurements. The precise control of doping and the creation of p-n junctions in graphene offer exciting possibilities for various electronic, optoelectronic, and thermoelectric applications. Furthermore, we fabricate transparent graphene thermocouples with a high electromotive force of approximately ca. 80 µV/K, which validates the reliability and effectiveness of our approach for temperature sensing applications. This work paves the way for high-performance graphene-based electronic devices via controlled doping and patterning techniques. These findings provide valuable insights for the practical implementation of graphene in various fields.

RESUMO

A considerable material discontinuity between the enamel and dentin might jeopardize the tooth's mechanical durability over time without the attenuation of the dentin-enamel junction (DEJ). However, the critical loading transmission mechanism at the DEJ remains understudied. This study aimed to define the extent and effective width of the DEJ, along with its mechanical competence. The presence of DEJ interphase layer was identified using a motif analysis based on the ion beam-transmission electron microscopy coupled with nanoindentation modulus mapping. For each region, nanoindentation load-displacement curves were recorded and mathematically analyzed using an appropriate viscoelastic constitutive model. The time-course of indenter penetration (creep) behavior of the tooth tissues can be mathematically approximated by the Kelvin-Voigt model in series, which determined the visco-contribution to the overall mechanical responses. Therefore, the elastic-plastic contribution can be distinguished from the overall mechanical responses of the tooth after subtracting the visco-contributions. During the loading period, the enamel behavior was dominated by elastic-plastic responses, while both the dentin and DEJ showed pronounced viscoelastic responses. The instantaneous modulus of the DEJ, which was measured by eliminating viscoelastic behavior from the raw load-displacement curve, was almost double that of the dentin. The DEJ was stiffer than the dentin, but it exhibited large viscoelastic motion even at the initial loading stage. This study revealed that the load attenuation competence of the DEJ, which involves extra energy expenditure, is mainly associated with its viscoelasticity. The mathematical analysis proposed here, performed on the nanoindentation creep behavior, could potentially augment the existing knowledge on hard-tissue biomechanics. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: In this study, we undertake a rigorous mechanical characterization of the dentin-enamel junction (DEJ) using an advanced nanoindentation technique coupled with a pertinent viscoelastic constitutive model. Our approach unveils the substantial viscoelastic contribution of the DEJ during the initial indentation loading phase and offers an elaborate delineation of the DEJ interphase layer through sophisticated image analysis. These insights significantly augment our understanding of tooth durability. Importantly, our innovative mathematical analysis of creep behavior introduces a novel approach with profound implications for future research in the expansive field of hard-tissue biomechanics. The pioneering methodologies and findings presented in this work hold substantial potential to invigorate progress in biomaterials research and fuel further explorations into the functionality of biological tissues.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of four chemical treatment methods on the contaminated surfaces of VITA ENAMIC (EN) and CERASMART (CS) resin composite computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing blocks (RCBs). METHODS: Each RCB was contaminated with a handpiece oil for 1 minute. These contaminated surfaces were then chemically treated by Gel Etchant (PA), Ivoclean (IC), Monobond Etch & Prime (MB), or Ceramics Etch (HF) reagents (n= 12), after which their shear bond strengths, morphologies, failure modes, and surface free energies were examined. RESULTS: The shear bond strengths of the HF-treated surfaces significantly exceeded those of the specimens treated with the other reagents. Adhesive fractures were observed for both the EN and CS blocks after 24 hours of treatment with lubricating oil, PA, and IC. The largest numbers of mixed and cohesive fractures were detected for the MB- and HA-treated specimens. The HF-treated EN and CS blocks possessed the highest surface free energies. The bonding strengths of the resin composites decreased after the contamination of their surfaces; however, the adhesion properties of both blocks were considerably improved by chemical treatment. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The lubricating oil contamination of dental handpieces significantly reduces the adhesion between the CAD-CAM resin composite block and the resin composite. Therefore, it is necessary to remove contamination and improve the adhesiveness using an optimal chemical surface treatment.

RESUMO

The spatial resolutions of even the most sensitive isotope analysis techniques based on light or ion probes are limited to a few hundred nanometres. Although vibrational spectroscopy using electron probes has achieved higher spatial resolution1-3, the detection of isotopes at the atomic level4 has been challenging so far. Here we show the unambiguous isotopic imaging of 12C carbon atoms embedded in 13C graphene and the monitoring of their self-diffusion via atomic-level vibrational spectroscopy. We first grow a domain of 12C carbon atoms in a pre-existing crack of 13C graphene, which is then annealed at 600 degrees Celsius for several hours. Using scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy, we obtain an isotope map that confirms the segregation of 12C atoms that diffused rapidly. The map also indicates that the graphene layer becomes isotopically homogeneous over 100-nanometre regions after 2 hours. Our results demonstrate the high mobility of carbon atoms during growth and annealing via self-diffusion. This imaging technique can provide a fundamental methodology for nanoisotope engineering and monitoring, which will aid in the creation of isotope labels and tracing at the nanoscale.

RESUMO

Nintedanib, a triple tyrosine kinase inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor, platelet-derived growth factor receptor, and fibroblast growth factor receptor, has been used in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and adenocarcinoma in advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Although vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors have been reported to cause endothelial injury and glomerular microangiopathy, nintedanib-induced glomerular microangiopathy has not been reported. A 68-year-old man with a history of primary aldosteronism, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and pleomorphic carcinoma of the lung developed proteinuria and leg edema after nintedanib initiation. Kidney biopsy revealed prominent endothelial and mesangial injury. Proteinuria improved after nintedanib withdrawal. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second case report of nintedanib-induced glomerular microangiopathy. Although the incidence of nephropathy among patients receiving nintedanib is unknown at this moment, we recommend monitoring urinary protein excretion and blood pressure in patients receiving nintedanib and performing kidney biopsy to determine any histopathological change.

RESUMO

In April 2019, Japan formally introduced health technology assessment (HTA) and, more specifically, a cost-effectiveness analysis, to inform healthcare decision making, mainly when it comes to the pricing of new technologies. This article provides an overview of this new policy, which was implemented formally after a pilot program. In the fiscal year (FY) 2012, discussions on cost-effectiveness assessments were initiated in Japan. After 7 years of deliberations, a cost-effectiveness assessment was implemented formally in April 2019. In Japan, the cost-effectiveness analysis has been used to inform price adjustments of healthcare technologies, although it has not yet been used for decision making on insurance coverage. Selection criteria were established because not all drugs and medical devices could be evaluated owing to a shortage of experts. Exclusion criteria have also been applied to prevent access restriction. The scope of the evaluation's price adjustment target is limited to part of the product price. If the cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) threshold falls below ¥5 million per QALY, the price adjustment rate changes stepwise according to the cost per QALY. In addition to price reduction, a price-raising scheme has also been implemented for scenarios where products are evaluated to be highly cost-effective and innovative. This article describes the first formally implemented HTA system in Japan. Although it is too early to make any conclusions about its effect, the Japan-specific context makes this system unique. To fully understand the opportunities and challenges of the new system, it is vital that Japan accumulates experience with this system and develops human resources in health economic evaluation.

RESUMO

A 77-year-old man with a history of hypertension, prostate hyperplasia, and urolithiasis was admitted for acute kidney injury caused by hypercalcemia. Neck ultrasonography showed a large cyst adjacent to the right lower thyroid lobe. Although a 99mtechnetium sestamibi scan was negative, an extremely high intracystic intact parathyroid hormone level suggested that the cyst had a parathyroid origin and that a functional parathyroid cyst was present. Immunohistochemical staining for the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) after right lower parathyroidectomy revealed CaSR-positive cells lining the cyst, indicating that the functional parathyroid cyst had originated from the hemorrhagic degeneration of a parathyroid adenoma.

RESUMO

Here, we propose simple diamond functionalization by carboxyl termination for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) detection by an aptamer. The high-sensitivity label-free aptamer sensor for ATP detection was fabricated on nanocrystalline diamond (NCD). Carboxyl termination of the NCD surface by vacuum ultraviolet excimer laser and fluorine termination of the background region as a passivated layer were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Single strand DNA (amide modification) was used as the supporting biomolecule to immobilize into the diamond surface via carboxyl termination and become a double strand with aptamer. ATP detection by aptamer was observed as a 66% fluorescence signal intensity decrease of the hybridization intensity signal. The sensor operation was also investigated by the field-effect characteristics. The shift of the drain current-drain voltage characteristics was used as the indicator for detection of ATP. From the field-effect characteristics, the shift of the drain current-drain voltage was observed in the negative direction. The negative charge direction shows that the aptamer is capable of detecting ATP. The ability of the sensor to detect ATP was investigated by fabricating a field-effect transistor on the modified NCD surface.

RESUMO

Bilayer graphene was synthesized at low temperature using surface wave microwave plasma techniques where poly(methyl metacrylate) (PMMA) and methane (CH4) were used as carbon sources. Temperature-dependent Hall effect measurements were carried out in a helium atmosphere. Sheet resistance, sheet carrier density and mobility showed weak temperature dependence for graphene from PMMA, and the highest carrier mobility is 740 cm2 V-1 s-1. For graphene from CH4, tunneling of the domain boundary limited carrier transport. The difference in average domain size was determined by Raman signal maps. In addition, residuals of PMMA were detected on graphene from PMMA. The low sheet resistances of graphene synthesized at a temperature of 280 °C using plasma techniques were explained by the PMMA related residuals rather than the domain sizes.

RESUMO

An aptasensor was designed on a nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) surface that combined with biological recognition elements, PDGF-binding aptamers, which inherently possess high affinity to PDGF-BB proteins. Functional components such as carboxylic acids (-COOH) and amines (-NH2) were directly introduced onto the NCD surface and used as probing units for immobilization of PDGF-binding aptamers. The surface coverage of different components on the NCD was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements, and the effects of various functionalizations on the NCD biosensor performance were investigated via fluorescence observations. The coverages of carboxyl and amine groups achieved were 12 and 23%, respectively, for the directly aminated and carboxylated NCD; however, the lower density of carboxyl groups on the functionalized surface did not deteriorate the performance of the COOH-NCD biosensor. Fluorescence investigations demonstrated comparable performance in sensitivity and selectivity for PDGF protein detection on COOH-NCD and NH2-NCD biosensors. Multiple regeneration tests clearly showed that the COOH-NCD biosensor as well as the NH2-NCD biosensor retained a high performance without exhibiting any noticeable degradation.

RESUMO

We encountered a case of plasmablastic extramedullary plasmacytoma with multiple myeloma. Histological findings revealed that the extramedullary plasmacytoma of this patient was of the plasmablastic type, which was positive for λ-stain and EBV-encoded RNA. In contrast, bone marrow aspiration demonstrated a common-type multiple myeloma, which was positive for λ-stain and negative for EBV-encoded RNA. This was a rare case of plasmablastic extramedullary plasmacytoma associated with Epstein-Barr virus arising in an immunocompetent patient with multiple myeloma.
