RESUMO

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with a pentagonal structure have many unique physical properties and great potential for applications in electrical, thermal, and optical fields. In this paper, the intrinsic thermal transport properties of 2D pentagonal CX2 (X = N, P, As, and Sb) are comparatively investigated. The results show that penta-CN2 has a high thermal conductivity (302.7 W/mK), while penta-CP2, penta-CAs2, and penta-CSb2 have relatively low thermal conductivities of 60.0, 36.9, and 11.8 W/mK, respectively. The main reason for the high thermal conductivity of penta-CN2 is that the small atomic mass of the N atom is comparable to that of the C atom, resulting in a preferable pentagonal structure with stronger bonds and thus a higher phonon group velocity. The reduction in the thermal conductivity of the other three materials is mainly due to the gradually increased atomic mass from P to Sb, which reduces the phonon group velocity. In addition, the large atomic mass difference does not result in a huge enhancement of the anharmonicity or weakening of the phonon relaxation time. The present work is expected to deepen the understanding of the thermal transport of main group V 2D pentagonal carbons and pave the way for their future applications, also, providing ideas for finding potential thermal management materials.

RESUMO

We obtained a new material called monolayer 1T-Ag6S2 by replacing metal atoms in 1T phase transition-metal dichalcogenide sulfides (TMDs) with octahedral Ag6 clusters. Subsequently, the thermoelectric transport properties of monolayer 1T-Ag6S2 were systematically investigated using first-principles calculations and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA-PBE) exchange correlation functional. The findings demonstrate that monolayer 1T-Ag6S2 displays characteristics of a wide-bandgap semiconductor, with a bandgap of 2.48 eV. Notably, the incorporation of Ag6 clusters disrupts the structural symmetry, effectively enhancing the electronic structure and phonon properties of the material. Due to the flat valence band near the Fermi level, the extended relaxation time of the hole results in a greater effective mass compared to the electron, leading to a significant increase in the Seebeck coefficient. Under optimal doping conditions, the power factor of monolayer 1T-Ag6S2 can achieve 14.9 mW/mK2 at 500 K. The intricate crystal structure induces phonon path bending, reduces the overall frequency of phonon vibrations (<10 THz), and causes hybridization of low-frequency optical and acoustic branches, resulting in remarkably low lattice thermal conductivity (0.20 and 0.17 W/mK along the x and y axes at 500 K, respectively). The monolayer 1T-Ag6S2 demonstrates a remarkably high figure of merit ZT of 3.14 (3.15) on the x (y) axis at 500 K, significantly higher than those of conventional TMD materials. Such excellent thermoelectric properties suggest that monolayer 1T-Ag6S2 is a promising thermoelectric (TE) material. Our work reveals the deep mechanism of cluster substitution to optimize the thermoelectric properties of materials and provides a useful reference for subsequent research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although cisplatin and a number of platinum complexes have widely been used for the treatment of neoplasia, patients receiving these treatments have frequently suffered from their severe toxic side effects, the development of resistance with consequent relapse. In the recent decades, numerous complexes of coinage metals including that of gold, copper and silver have been reported to display promising in vitro and/or in vivo anti-cancer activities as well as potent activities towards cisplatin-resistant tumors. Nevertheless, the medical development of these metal complexes has been hampered by their instability in aqueous solutions and the nonspecific binding in biological systems. METHODS: One of the approaches to overcome these problems is to design and develop adequate drug delivery systems (DDSs) for the transport of these complexes. By functionalization, encapsulation or formulation of the metal complexes, several types of DDSs have been reported to improve the desired pharmacological profile of the metal complexes, improving their overall stability, bioavailability, anti-cancer activity and reducing their toxicity towards normal cells. CONCLUSION: In this review, we summarized the recent findings for different DDSs for various anti- cancer active complexes of some coinage metals.

RESUMO

Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is an efficient and widely used technique to monitor gene expression. Housekeeping genes (HKGs) are often empirically selected as the reference genes for data normalization. However, the suitability of HKGs used as the reference genes has been seldom validated. Here, six HKGs were chosen (actin A3, actin A1, GAPDH, G3PDH, E2F, rp49) in four lepidopteran insects Bombyx mori L. (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae), Plutella xylostella L. (Plutellidae), Chilo suppressalis Walker (Crambidae), and Spodoptera exigua Hübner (Noctuidae) to study their expression stability. The algorithms of geNorm, NormFinder, stability index, and ΔCt analysis were used to evaluate these HKGs. Across different developmental stages, actin A1 was the most stable in P. xylostella and C. suppressalis, but it was the least stable in B. mori and S. exigua. Rp49 and GAPDH were the most stable in B. mori and S. exigua, respectively. In different tissues, GAPDH, E2F, and Rp49 were the most stable in B. mori, S. exigua, and C. suppressalis, respectively. The relative abundances of Siwi genes estimated by 2(-ΔΔCt) method were tested with different HKGs as the reference gene, proving the importance of internal controls in qPCR data analysis. The results not only presented a list of suitable reference genes in four lepidopteran insects, but also proved that the expression stabilities of HKGs were different among evolutionarily close species. There was no single universal reference gene that could be used in all situations. It is indispensable to validate the expression of HKGs before using them as the internal control in qPCR.

RESUMO

Methanol is one of the most common short-chain alcohols in fermenting fruits, the natural food of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. The larvae cope continuously with methanol at various concentrations in order to survive and develop. In the present article, we found toxicities of dietary methanol and formaldehyde were enhanced by piperonyl butoxide, but not by 3-amino-1, 2, 4-triazole, 4-methylpyrazole, diethylmeleate, and triphenyl phosphate, when assessing by the combination index method. These results reveal that cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYPs), rather than catalases, alcohol dehydrogenases, glutathione S-transferases, and esterases, participate in methanol metabolism. Moreover, methanol exposure dramatically increased CYP activity. The ratios of the CYP activities in treated larvae to those in control reached, respectively, up to 3.0-, 3.9-, and 2.7-fold, at methanol concentrations of 22.6, 27.9, and 34.5 mg/g diet. In addition, methanol exposure greatly up-regulated the mRNA expression level of five Cyp genes, which were Cyp304a1, Cyp9f2, Cyp28a5, Cyp4d2, and Cyp4e2. Their resulting proteins were suggested as the candidate enzymes for methanol metabolism in D. melanogaster larvae.

RESUMO

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE, EC 3.1.1.7) is an important enzyme with a typical function of degrading the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Although two ace genes were reported in Plutella xylostella, their function differences remain largely unknown. The chemically synthesized siRNAs (si-Pxace1 and si-Pxace2) were injected into the second instar larvae to knock down Pxace1 and Pxace2, either respectively or simultaneously. The mRNA abundance of Pxace1 and Pxace2 was significantly reduced to 7-33.5% of the control levels at 72 h after siRNA injection. The AChE activities were significantly decreased at 96 h after treatment. Silencing of Pxace1 or Pxace2 resulted in mortality of 33.9 and 22.9%, respectively. The survivors in siRNA-treated groups had apparent growth inhibition such as reduction in larvae weights and lengths, malformation and motor retardation. Knockdown of Pxace1 apparently affected more on larvae growth than that of Pxace2, suggesting that Pxace1 had more important roles than Pxace2. Both Pxace1 and Pxace2 genes might have atypical functions in regulating larvae growth and motor ability.
