RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The present cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the perceptions of continuing education action (CEA) participants on the use of an audience response system (ARS). Secondarily, the study assessed the association between the diagnostic abilities of participants and their self-confidence in managing oral lesions METHODS: Oral medicine specialists, dentists, hygienists, and students (n = 193) who attended the 'Maio Vermelho Project', a CEA held in a Southern Brazilian State, answered a diagnostic ability test using the ARS Socrative software during a case discussion section. The test comprised 16 simulated clinical cases based on photos of oral lesions. The questions required classification of the lesion's nature, diagnostic hypothesis, and decision making (manage the case or refer it to a specialist) for each case. A second questionnaire composed of 12 questions was also applied to evaluate satisfaction and perception of the use of ARS Socrative RESULTS: Hygienists displayed lower scores in the diagnostic abilities test, whereas the other groups' performances were quite similar. Dentists and dental students who scored higher on the diagnostic abilities test showed higher self-confidence in the management of benign lesions. All participants stated that the use of technology can improve their learning experience and should be incorporated into the classroom. Moreover, the participants' perception was highly favorable to the use of Socrative in educational activities CONCLUSION: Our findings showed good acceptance of the ARS tool in a CEA environment and suggest an association between performance on the questionnaire and self-confidence in oral lesion management.

Aim: This study aimed to compare the microbiological potential and gustatory perception of essential oils (EO) mouthrinses containing and not containing alcohol. Methods: Twenty healthy adult volunteers rinsed with 10mL of the following test solutions: EO with alcohol, EO without alcohol, or a control solution (saline solution with mint essence). A washout period of at least seven days was adopted after a single-use protocol of the respective solution. All participants used all three tested substances. Antimicrobial potential was assessed by counting salivary total viable bacteria both before and after each rinse. Gustatory perception was evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Multiple comparisons were performed with the Wilcoxon test, using Bonferroni correction. Results: Both EO solutions presented a higher antimicrobial potential in comparison to the control solution (p<0.017). However, no significant difference in antimicrobial potential was observed between EO containing or not containing alcohol (p=0.218). VAS of EO with alcohol (median: 2.7) was similar to control solution (median: 1.6) (p=0.287). A better gustatory perception was observed of the EO without alcohol (median 7.6) when compared to the control solution (p<0.0001). When EO groups were compared, EO without alcohol also demonstrated a significantly better gustatory perception (p=0.001). Conclusion: Mouthrinse containing EO without alcohol presented a better taste perception when compared to the EO with alcohol, but no difference was observed in the antimicrobial potential of both EO solutions after a single rinse protocol

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to incorporate sol-gel-derived bioactive glass as filler into experimental adhesive resins and evaluate the influence of glass composition on the physicochemical and biological properties of the developed adhesives. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sol-gel particles were produced with or without the addition of niobium (BAGNb or BAG, respectively). The produced particles were incorporated (2wt%) into experimental adhesive resins formulated with 66wt% bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate and 33wt% hydroxyethyl methacrylate. Ethyl dimethyl-4-aminobenzoate and camphorquinone were used as photoinitiator system. Two experimental groups were produced: ABAGNb and ABAG. The adhesive without particles was used as control (ACG). The materials were tested for their degree of conversion, softening in solvent, and cytotoxicity. The mineral deposition was analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. Flexural strength and immediate and 1-year microtensile bond strength were evaluated. RESULTS: No statistical difference was found in degree of conversion. ABAGNb showed reduced softening and higher mineral deposition than ACG and ABAG after 28 days. ABAG and ABAGNb resulted in higher cell viability and lower flexural strength when compared to ACG. After 1-year, ABAGNb and ABAG presented statistically significant lower µTBS values. SIGNIFICANCE: Sol-gel-derived bioactive glasses promoted increased mineral deposition and cell viability for experimental adhesives with increased phosphate content and longitudinal µTBS values for the ABAGNb group. These results suggest the potential of the studied particles to be applied as bioactive fillers for dental adhesives. Reductions in longitudinal µTBS and flexural strength, however, were observed for both glasses compositions and must be considered.
