RESUMO

The current research is conducted to model the effect of climate change and land use change (LUC) on the geographical distribution of Quercus brantii Lindl. (QB) forests across their historical range. Forecasting was done based on six general circulation models under RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5 future climate change scenarios for the future years 2050 and 2070. In order to model the species distribution, different modeling methods were used. The results indicated that, in general, climatic variables had a higher influence on the distribution of QB than land use-related attributes. The mean diurnal range (bio2), the precipitation seasonality (bio15), and the mean temperature of the driest quarter (bio9) were the main predictors in the distribution of QB forests, while land use variables were less important in oak species distribution. The GBM, MaxEnt, and RF had higher accuracy and performance in modeling species distribution. The outputs also showed that in the current climate circumstances, 97,608.81 km2 of the studied area has high desirability for the presence of QB, and by 2070, under the pessimistic scenario, 96.29% of these habitats will be lost under the concomitant effect of LUC and climate change. By using the results of this research, it is possible to predict and identify the effective factors in changing the habitat of this oak species with more certainty. Based on the insights obtained from the results of such studies, the protection and restoration planning of the habitat of this key species, which supports diverse species, will be provided more efficiently.

RESUMO

In the present report, homochiral hydrogen-bonded assemblies of heavily N-doped (C9H6N6) heterocyclic triimidazole (TT) molecules on an Ag(111) substrate were investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) techniques. The planar and prochiral TT molecules, which exhibit a threefold rotation symmetry and lack mirror symmetry when assembled on the substrate, carry multiple hydrogen-bonding donor and acceptor functionalities, inevitably leading to the formation of hexameric two-dimensionally extended assemblies that can be either homo- (RR/SS) or heterochiral (RS). Experimental STM data showing well-ordered homochiral domains and experimental LEED data are consistent with simulations assuming the R19.1° overlayer on the Ag(111) lattice. Importantly, we report the unexpected coincidence of spontaneous resolution with the condensation of neighboring islands in adjacent "Janus pairs". The islands are connected by a characteristic fault zone, an observation that we discuss in the context of the fairly symmetric molecule and its propensity to compromise and benefit from interisland bonding at the expense of lattice mismatches and strain in the defect zone. We relate this to the close to triangular shape and the substantial but weak bonding scheme beyond van der Waals (vdW) of the TT molecules, which is due to the three N-containing five-membered imidazole rings. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show clear energetic differences between homochiral and heterochiral pairwise interactions, clearly supporting the experimental results.

RESUMO

The temporal and spatial dynamics of soil fauna in many terrestrial ecosystems are still not fully understood, while soil fauna is one of the most critical characteristics in assessing soil quality. Therefore, the effects of native [Quercus brantii (QP) and Amygdalus scoparia (AMP)] and non-native [Cupressus arizonica (CUP) and Pinus eldarica (PIN)] plantations and natural trees [Quercus brantii coppice trees (QNC), standard (QNS), and Amygdalus scoparia (AMN)] on diversity and abundance of macro- and mesofauna were done in the semi-arid forest of Zagros, Iran. Samples were collected beneath the canopy of woody species and the outer edge of the canopy in spring and summer seasons. For this purpose, soil samples [(7 samples per woody species + control) × 2 seasons × 3 replicates] were taken from 0 to 20 cm depths. Each soil sample was a mix of three soil cores. For the macrofauna, 15 species belonging to four families (in spring) and 17 species in nine families (in summer) were collected and identified. For the soil mesofauna, 14 species belonging to 14 families (in spring) and 13 species in 13 different families (in summer) were identified, respectively. The fauna diversity indices under the canopy of studied species were higher in summer season than in spring. The result showed that the macrofauna diversity was affected by tree species, while mesofauna was affected by seasonal changes. Macrofauna biodiversity was higher under the canopy of PIN and CUP than other trees. Principle component analysis showed that the diversity of the macrofauna was higher under the canopy of PIN and CUP, and influenced by soil characteristic properties, soil properties did not influence them. Yet the diversity of the mesofauna was affected by soil characteristics and was higher in areas with higher organic carbon, nitrogen, substrate-induced respiration, basal respiration, microbial carbon biomass, and alkaline phosphatase. In addition, mesofauna biodiversity had a significant positive correlation with the soil quality index (SQI). SQI was higher under the canopy of natural stands, especially the QNS. Conservation of native species (QNS, QNC, and AMN) and plantation with native deciduous species (QP and AMP) seem to moderate environmental conditions and increase soil macro- and mesofauna diversity and SQI.

RESUMO

Mountain landscapes are highly heterogeneous due to topography, notably positions along slope and slope shapes, which control ecosystem mechanisms. We hypothesized that tree dieback is controlled by topography, selecting productive and less diverse communities in lower slopes, and stress-resistant and more diverse communities on upper slopes. Understanding how this heterogeneity drives vegetation patterns should provide benchmarks for ecosystem management of mountain forest dominated by Quercus brantii. Woody communities were sampled along convex vs concave topography (i.e., ridge vs talweg), and with measurements of tree dieback severity, environmental variables (litter depth, soil quality, rock outcrop), stand structure (canopy cover, mistletoe infestation, tree diameter and height, diameter and height differentiations, oaks' number from sprout-clumps or seed-origin), and biodiversity. Slope position was the most significant driver that affected all variables, excepted evenness. Dieback severity was higher on slope shoulders and summits, and lower in lower slopes where trees were the most productive: taller, larger, more homogeneous, and mostly seed-origin. Catena shape affected the diversity and dieback severity, both higher in talwegs, but had no effect on environmental variables and little on stand structure. Outputs indicate that the higher diversity of woody plants is on upper slopes supporting stress-resistant community associated with more severe dieback and mistletoe infection probably because frugivore birds attracted by the shrubs' fruits. Semi-arid forest management must consider the shaped-slope ecosystem heterogeneity by preserving ridges that are more susceptible to tree dieback, and naturally support biodiversity. Restoration measures on lower fertile slopes could be carried out by oak planting or seedlings under the cover of shrubs to counter dieback effects and environmental stresses. In addition, forestry measures can be taken in lower positions for the conversion of coppice to high oak forest to potentially consider a moderate forestry.

RESUMO

The semi-arid forest ecosystems of western Iran dominated by Quercus brantii are often disturbed by wildfires. Here, we assessed the effects of short fire intervals on the soil properties and community diversity of herbaceous plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), as well as the interactions between these ecosystem features. Plots burned once or twice within 10 years were compared to unburned plots over a long time period (control sites). Soil physical properties were not affected by the short fire interval, except bulk density, which increased. Soil geochemical and biological properties were affected by the fires. Soil organic matter and nitrogen concentrations were depleted by two fires. Short intervals impaired microbial respiration, microbial biomass carbon, substrate-induced respiration, and urease enzyme activity. The successive fires affected the AMF's Shannon diversity. The diversity of the herb community increased after one fire and dropped after two, indicating that the whole community structure was altered. Two fires had greater direct than indirect effects on plant and fungal diversity, as well as soil properties. Short-interval fires depleted soil functional properties and reduced herb diversity. With short-interval fires probably fostered by anthropogenic climate change, the functionalities of this semi-arid oak forest could collapse, necessitating fire mitigation.

RESUMO

Leaf traits, which vary across different climatic conditions, can reveal evolutionary changes within a species made to adapt to the environment. Leaf traits play major roles in a plant functions under varying climatic conditions. To examine adaptive modes and mechanisms applied by plants in different climates, we analyzed leaf morphology and anatomical structures in Quercus brantii in the Zagros forests, Western Iran. The plants adapted to the environmental differences with increased dry matter content in a Mediterranean climate, and increasing leaf length, specific leaf area, stomata length (SL), stomata width, stomatal density (SD), stomatal pore index (SPI), trichome length, and width in a sub-humid climate; trichome density was increased in a semi-arid climate. There were strong, positive correlations between SPI with SL and SD. Correlations for other leaf traits were weakly significant. Such morphological and anatomical plasticity probably leads to lower transpiration rates, control of internal temperature and water status, and improved photosynthetic capability under stressing conditions. These findings provide new insights into the adaptive strategies of plants to environmental changes at the morphological and anatomical levels.

RESUMO

Drought has serious effects on forests, especially semi-arid and arid forests, around the world. Zagros Forest in Iran has been severely affected by drought, which has led to the decline of the most common tree species, Persian oak (Quercus brantii). The objective of this study was to determine the effects of drought on the anatomical structure of Persian oak. Three healthy and three declined trees were sampled from each of two forest sites in Ilam Forest. Discs were cut at breast height, and three sapwood blocks were taken near the bark of each tree for sectioning. The anatomical characteristics measured included fiber length (FL), fiber wall thickness (FWT), number of axial parenchymal cells (NPC), ray number (RN), ray width (RW), and number of calcium oxalate crystals. Differences between healthy and declined trees were observed in the abundance of NPC and in RN, FL, and FWT, while no differences occurred in the number of oxalate crystals. The decline had uncertain effects on the FL of trees from sites A and B, which showed values of 700.5 and 837.3 µm compared with 592.7 and 919.6 µm in healthy trees. However, the decline resulted in an increase in the FWT of trees from sites A and B (9.33 and 11.53 µm) compared with healthy trees (5.23 and 9.56 µm). NPC, RN, and RW also increased in declined individuals from sites A and B (28.40 and 28.40 mm−1; 41.06 and 48.60 mm−1; 18.60 and 23.20 µm, respectively) compared with healthy trees (20.50 and 19.63 mm−2; 31.60 and 28.30 mm−2; 17.93 and 15.30 µm, respectively). Thus, drought caused measurable changes in the anatomical characteristics of declined trees compared with healthy trees.

RESUMO

Host-guest architectures provide ideal systems for investigating site-specific physical and chemical effects. Condensation events in nanometer-sized confinements are particularly interesting for the investigation of intermolecular and molecule-surface interactions. They may be accompanied by conformational adjustments representing induced fit packing patterns. Here, we report that the symmetry of small clusters formed upon condensation, their registry with the substrate, their lateral packing, and their adsorption height are characteristically modified by the packing of cycloalkanes in confinements. While cyclopentane and cycloheptane display cooperativity upon filling of the hosting pores, cyclooctane and to a lesser degree cyclohexane diffusively redistribute to more favored adsorption sites. The dynamic behavior of cyclooctane is surprising at 5 K given the cycloalkane melting point of >0 °C. The site-specific modification of the interaction and behavior of adsorbates in confinements plays a crucial role in many applications of three-dimensional porous materials as gas storage agents or catalysts/biocatalysts.

RESUMO

Soils and oak trees (Quercus brantii Lindl.) in Zagros forests are suffering from the air pollution caused by the Ilam Gas Refinery. Thus, for the first time, we investigated the contamination level of sulfur and trace elements in these ecosystems. Sampling of soil and tree leaves was carried out in different seasons of 2019 and at different distances from the gas refinery. The results showed that soils and leaves at the various distances compared with control distance (10,000 m) were more affected by the gas refinery. Distance from the pollution source and physicochemical properties of soils were the main factors affecting contamination of soil elements contents. The soils with pollution load indices (PLI) of 4.54 were in the highly polluted category. Sulfur was at highly polluted category in soils and were highly enriched in trees. The trees mainly absorbed studied elements via their aerial organs. Our findings indicated that oak trees with the highest value of metal accumulation index are influence tools for monitoring various elements in the polluted air produced by the gas refinery. It is recommended that the ecosystem components near the refinery be studied to accurately evaluate disorders in the food chain.

RESUMO

We investigated the influence of mature of oak trees of various dimensions on soil properties, acorn and oak seedling characteristics in semi-arid forests in western Iran. A total of 24 oak trees were selected in comparable site conditions according to three size categories: small trees (DBH< 20 cm), medium trees (DBH: 20-50 cm) and large trees (DBH> 50 cm). Soil properties, light availability below canopy, acorn dimensions and weight, various below- and above-ground seedling morphological traits were measured. Besides, a seedling quality index (SQI) was also produced as an integrative measure of the seedling response. We found an increasing light availability from small trees to large trees (1512-103 µmol m-2 s-1) and soil fertility was largely improved from small trees to large trees: soil organic carbon (1.33-2.2%), available phosphorus (12.9-18.1 ppm) and potassium (301.2-470.4 ppm). However, soil properties did not significantly differ between medium and large trees. In contrast, acorn weight and dimensions as well as many seedling traits, including the aerial and belowground biomass and the SQI, were the highest in the medium tree category. To fully explore the relationships among our large set of variables, we produced a partial least square path model which explained 72% of the variation of SQI across the three tree classes. To conclude, we identified a clear effect by mature trees which provided favourable conditions for seedling establishment, but that effect was mediated by tree size and optimal conditions were found below the canopy of medium trees.

RESUMO

Air pollution around refineries and factories is one of the major environmental challenges affecting forest ecosystems' health. Although there have been many studies on Iran's forest ecosystems, the physiological and morphological responses of Brant's oak (Quercus brantii Lindl.) leaves to the pollution of the gas refineries in the semiarid forests have not received much attention. We sampled healthy and mature leaves from four oak stands in different seasons (spring, summer, and autumn of 2019) and at various distances from the gas refinery (1,000, 1,500, 2,000, 2,500, and 10,000 m). The results showed that oak trees in different seasons and at different distances from the refinery had different physiological and morphological leaf trait responses to the pollution source. Oak trees with an air pollution tolerance index value of less than 11 were in a sensitive range to air pollution and can be used to biomonitor air pollution around the gas refinery in Zagros forests. Physiological traits in different seasons and at various distances in comparison with morphological traits (persistent reaction responses) were well distinguished from one another and were more affected by pollution. Oak trees in summer and autumn and at distances up to 2,500 m had rapid reaction responses, including oxidative stress indicators such as electrolyte leakage (EL), hydrogen peroxide, and different enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants such as phenol, flavonoids, catalase, and proline. Because of their high sensitivity to atmospheric pollutant stresses, we recommend that these traits be used for rapid and low-cost environmental monitoring of pollution in different seasons and distances from pollution sources in semiarid ecosystems.

RESUMO

Evaluation of forest sites capability (EFSC) is important for the restoration of degraded areas. The current costly EFSC approaches developed based on forest stand structure criteria is too costly for less developed countries (LDC) and not suitable for severely degraded lands. This paper describes an inexpensive Landscape-fuzzy approach for forest capability evaluation (LFAFCE) that can be used to restore degraded forest areas especially in LDC. Five physical criteria of slope, hillshade, altitude, precipitation, and geo formation were evaluated in the Zagros region of western Iran using the fuzzy membership functions, prioritized by analytic network process (ANP), and combined with GIS-based weighted linear combination. We then performed multi-criteria evaluation integrated by GIS. Given the positive correlation between the independent variable of EFSC and the dependent variable of the dominant tree height, the model results were validated based on the linear regression of the relationship between the two variables. The results of the validation showed that the linear regression model with appropriate coefficient of determination was significant. The results of EFSC by LFAFCE showed that most of the forest area was allocated to two classes: well (75%) and moderate (21.8%). In total, only 3.2% of the area belonged to the marginal (0.4%), high (0.1%), and unsuitable regions (2.7%) classes. Our results demonstrate that LFAFCE is valid for low-cost evaluation of degraded area in Zagros and for other similar areas, if calibrated, where normal forest mass parameters are not available.

RESUMO

There is a growing body of knowledge that ecosystem functions, in particular, soil-based ecosystem functions, are related to biodiversity. However, how plant species diversity influences soil-based functions along post-agricultural secondary succession is still a largely ignored question in Mediterranean semi-arid conditions. Therefore, we used the plant functional group approach to investigate the relationships between plant species diversity indices and soil-based functions including microbial biomass carbon (MBC), basal respiration (BR), and carbon sequestration (CS) across three different stages of the vegetation succession corresponding to ~ 5 years after agricultural abandonment, ~ 15 years after abandonment, and oak forests which represent the terminal stage. We also tested if these relationships are supported by the niche complementarity and selection effect hypotheses. The results showed that soil-based functions significantly increased with time since abandonment as BR, MBC, and CS increased respectively by 1.7, 1.5, and 2.7 times across the three successional stages. We also found strong correlations between the diversity indices and the soil-based functions BR, MBC, and CS which were positive for richness (R2 values 0.75, 0.74, and 0.75) and Shannon diversity (R2 values 0.61, 0.58, and 0.61) but negative for evenness (R2 values 0.38, 0.38, and 0.36 for, respectively). Similarly, richness and Shannon diversity of the different plant functional groups positively correlated with soil-based functions. However, contrasting results were found for evenness which positively correlated with soil-based functions for perennial grass only. We suggested that increasing the diversity of plant species and facilitating dominant species would be needed to improve the soil-based ecosystem functions after abandonment of degraded soils. This study also revealed that the mechanisms behind the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functions were influenced by the vegetative forms.

RESUMO

In this work, Ag nanogratings comprised of arrays of nanostrips with three different cross sections of triangular, rectangular, and trapezoidal shape were considered and put at the top of the thin-film metal-insulator-metal (MIM) and semiconductor-on-insulator (SOI) solar cells. Then, the optical absorption and the short-circuit current density (JSC) enhancement (relative to a bare cell) were calculated and compared. In addition, the best strip cross section among three types of cross sections and the optimum grating period were found. The results showed that for the transverse electric (TE) mode, only the waveguide modes were excited inside the Si active layer with the assistance of Ag nanogratings. For the transverse magnetic (TM) mode, the waveguide as well as the localized surface plasmonic (LSP) modes were excited. The LSP modes, which were excited at the longer wavelengths centered on ∼600 nm, led to an additional and consequently a larger JSC enhancement. Finally, among the various types of plasmonic SOI and MIM solar cells, a SOI cell with a 300 nm grating period, comprised of rectangular nanostrips, showed a 40% enhancement in JSC, which is the highest possible value achieved in this work.

RESUMO

This paper surveys the problem of predictive / reactive scheduling of an integrated operating theatre with two types of demand for surgery: 1) elective or known demand; 2) emergency or uncertain demand. The stochastic arrival of emergency patients with uncertain surgery time enforces the scheduler to react to disruption and modify scheduling plan of elective patients. We focus on this predictive / reactive scheduling problem which has not been investigated in such way before. As in hospitals, at the time of occurrence a disruption in a surgical suite, the scheduler has not enough time to make the best decision; we propose a new approach based on two-stage stochastic programming model with recourse which determines the best recourse strategy in advance of any disruption occurrence. Using the proposed approach, the primary schedule is generated in such a way that it can absorb disruption with minimum effect on planned elective surgeries. For the first time in operating theatre planning, two new significant sets of performance measures comprising "robustness" and "stability" measures are considered in generation of primary schedule which will be shown to be of great importance in efficiency of surgical suite planning. Computational experiments performed on sets of generated problem based on the data obtained from a non-profit hospital. In order to demonstrate efficiency of the proposed method, computational results of the proposed approach are compared with classic approach.
