RESUMO

Introduction: Understanding the response of cross-domain co-occurrence networks of soil microorganisms to phosphorus stability and the resulting impacts is critical in ecosystems, but the underlying mechanism is unclear in artificial grassland ecosystems. Methods: In this study, the effects of four phosphorus concentrations, P0 (0 kg P ha-1), P1 (15.3 kg P ha-1), P2 (30.6 kg P ha-1), and P3 (45.9 kg P ha-1), on the cross-domain co-occurrence network of bacteria and fungi were investigated in an artificial Leymus chinensis grassland in an arid region. Results and discussion: The results of the present study showed that phosphorus addition significantly altered the stem number, biomass and plant height of the Leymus chinensis but had no significant effect on the soil bacterial or fungal alpha (ACE) diversity or beta diversity. The phosphorus treatments all increased the cross-domain co-occurrence network edge, node, proportion of positively correlated edges, edge density, average degree, proximity to centrality, and robustness and increased the complexity and stability of the bacterial-fungal cross-domain co-occurrence network after 3 years of continuous phosphorus addition. Among them, fungi (Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Mortierellomycota and Glomeromycota) play important roles as keystone species in the co-occurrence network, and they are significantly associated with soil AN, AK and EC. Finally, the growth of Leymus chinensis was mainly due to the influence of the soil phosphorus content and AN. This study revealed the factors affecting the growth of Leymus chinense in artificial grasslands in arid areas and provided a theoretical basis for the construction of artificial grasslands.

RESUMO

Objective: To compare the effectiveness of unilateral biportal endoscopic decompression and unilateral biportal endoscopic lumbar interbody fusion (ULIF) in the treatment of degreeⅠdegenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS). Methods: A clinical data of 58 patients with degreeⅠDLS who met the selection criteria between October 2021 and October 2022 was retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 28 cases were treated with unilateral biportal endoscopic decompression (decompression group) and 30 cases with ULIF (ULIF group). There was no significant difference between the two groups ( P>0.05) in the gender, age, lesion segment, and preoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) score of low back pain, VAS score of leg pain, Oswestry disability index (ODI), C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), disk height (DH), segmental lordosis (SL), and other baseline data. The operation time, postoperative drainage volume, postoperative ambulation time, VAS score of low back pain, VAS score of leg pain, ODI, laboratory examination indexes (CRP, ESR), and imaging parameters (DH, SL) were compared between the two groups. Results: Compared with the ULIF group, the decompression group had shorter operation time, less postoperative drainage, and earlier ambulation ( P<0.05). All incisions healed by first intention, and no complication such as nerve root injury, epidural hematoma, or infection occurred. All patients were followed up 12 months. Laboratory tests showed that ESR and CRP at 3 days after operation in decompression group were not significantly different from those before operation ( P>0.05), while the above indexes in ULIF group significantly increased at 3 days after operation compared to preoperative values ( P<0.05). There were significant differences in the changes of ESR and CRP before and after operation between the two groups ( P<0.05). Except that the VAS score of low back pain at 3 days after operation was not significantly different from that before operation in decompression group ( P>0.05), there were significant differences in VAS score of low back pain and VAS score of leg pain between the two groups at other time points ( P<0.05). The VAS score of low back pain in ULIF group was significantly higher than that in decompression group at 3 days after operation ( P<0.05), and there was no significant difference in VAS score of low back pain and VAS score of leg pain between the two groups at other time points ( P>0.05). The ODI of the two groups significantly improved after operation ( P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between 3 days and 6 months after operation ( P>0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups at the two time points after operation ( P<0.05). Imaging examination showed that there was no significant difference in DH and SL between pre-operation and 12 months after operation in decompression group ( P>0.05). However, the above two indexes in ULIF group were significantly higher than those before operation ( P<0.05). There were significant differences in the changes of DH and SL before and after operation between the two groups ( P<0.05). Conclusion: Unilateral biportal endoscopic decompression can achieve good effectiveness in the treatment of degree Ⅰ DLS. Compared with ULIF, it can shorten operation time, reduce postoperative drainage volume, promote early ambulation, reduce inflammatory reaction, and accelerate postoperative recovery. ULIF has more advantages in restoring intervertebral DH and SL.

RESUMO

Salvianolic acid B (Sal B) is the primary water-soluble bioactive constituent derived from the roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge. This research was designed to reveal the potential mechanism of Sal B anti-liver injury from the perspective of macrophages. In our lipopolysaccharide-induced M1 macrophage model, Sal B showed a clear dose-dependent gradient of inhibition of the macrophage trend of the M1 type. Moreover, Sal B downregulated the expression of lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA), while the overexpression of LDHA impaired Sal B's effect of inhibiting the trend of macrophage M1 polarization. Additionally, this study revealed that Sal B exhibited inhibitory effects on the lactylation process of histone H3 lysine 18 (H3K18la). In a ChIP-qPCR analysis, Sal B was observed to drive a reduction in H3K18la levels in the promoter region of the LDHA, NLRP3, and IL-1ß genes. Furthermore, our in vivo experiments showed that Sal B has a good effect on alleviating CCl4-induced liver injury. An examination of liver tissues and the Kupffer cells isolated from those tissues proved that Sal B affects the M1 polarization of macrophages and the level of histone lactylation. Together, our data reveal that Sal B has a potential mechanism of inhibiting the histone lactylation of macrophages by downregulating the level of LDHA in the treatment of liver injury.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Emerging evidence indicates a connection between oxidative stress, immune-inflammatory processes, and the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. In addition to possessing potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, sulforaphane (SFN) has shown promise in enhancing cognitive function among individuals with schizophrenia. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of combined treatment with SFN in patients with schizophrenia who experience negative symptoms and its effect on the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the inflammatory marker, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (HsCRP). DESIGN: Forty-five patients with schizophrenia were recruited, who mainly experienced negative symptoms during a stable period. In addition to the original treatments, the patients received SFN tablets at a daily dose of 90 mg for 24 weeks. At baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks, the participants were interviewed and evaluated. The reduction rate of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess each participant. The side effects scale of Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale (TESS) was applied to assess the adverse reactions. Additionally, the levels of the SOD, HsCRP, and other indicators were examined. RESULTS: The study findings revealed a significant decrease in PANSS negative subscale scores (P < 0.001). Furthermore, there was a significant increase in SOD activity and HsCRP levels (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05). Notably, the group of participants who exhibited a reduction in PANSS negative subscale scores demonstrated a significant improvement in HsCRP levels (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that SFN may potentially serve as a safe adjunctive intervention to improve the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. The potential mechanism by which SFN improves negative symptoms in schizophrenia patients may involve its anti-inflammatory properties, specifically its ability to reduce HsCRP levels. RESUMO

Changes in nitrogen (N) deposition and litter mixtures have been shown to influence ecosystem processes such as litter decomposition. However, the interactive effects of litter mixing and N-deposition on decomposition process in desert regions remain poorly identified. We assessed the simultaneous effects of both N addition and litter mixture on mass loss in a litterbag decomposition experiment using six native plants in single-species samples with diverse quality and 14-species combinations in the Gurbantunggut Desert under two N addition treatments (control and N addition). The N addition had no significant effect on decomposition rate of single-species litter (expect Haloxylon ammodendron), whereas litter mass loss and decomposition rate differed significantly among species, with variations positively correlated with initial phosphorus concentration and negatively correlated with initial lignin concentration. After 18 months, the average mass loss across litter mixtures did not overall differ from those predicted from single species either in control or N addition treatments, that is, mixing of different species had no non-additive effects on decomposition. The N addition, however, did modify the direction of mixture effects and interacted with incubation time. Added N transformed synergistic effects of litter mixtures to antagonistic effects on mass loss after 1 month of decomposition, while transforming neutral effects of litter mixture to synergistic effects after 6 months of decomposition. Our results demonstrated that initial chemical properties played an important role in litter decomposition, while no effects of litter mixture on decomposition process in this desert region. The N addition altered the litter mixture effects on mass loss with incubation time, implying that increased N deposition in the future may have profound effects on carbon turnover to a greater extent than previously thought in desert ecosystems.

RESUMO

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the main microorganisms that contaminate dairy products and pickled foods, and has a great impact on economy and human health. GdmH-related proteins, as important functional units widely present in Staphylococcus species, have not been reported in S. aureus so far. In this study, we identified a gdmH-related gene, named ghl. We found that mutation of ghl gene could decrease the tolerance of environmental stresses (heat, desiccation, salt and hydrogen peroxide) of S. aureus and enhanced the capacities of biofilm formation. In addition, the ghl mutant was more sensitive to vancomycin on CAMHB solid plates but more resistant to vancomycin in CAMHB liquid medium compared to wild type RMSA24. These results indicated that ghl is an important factor to respond to environmental stress in foodborne S. aureus. This paper for the first time reported that a GdmH-related protein plays an important role in environmental tolerance, providing a new direction for the follow-up study of GdmH-related proteins, as well as a potential target gene for further research on the tolerance mechanism of Staphylococcus aureus in food processing and the control of biofilm formation.

RESUMO

Phosphorus (P) deficiencies are widespread in calcareous soils. The poor availability of nitrogen (N) and P in soils often restricts crop growth. However, the effects of P addition on plant growth and plant nutrient transport changes during the establishment of Leymus chinensis fields in Xinjiang are not clear. We investigated the responses of Leymus chinensis biomass and nutrient absorption and utilization to changes in soil N and P by adding P (0, 15.3, 30.6, and 45.9 kg P ha-1 year-1) with basally applied N fertilizer (150 kg N ha-1 year-1). The results showed that (a) Principal component analysis (PCA) of biomass, nutrient accumulation, soil available P, and soil available N during the different periods of Leymus chinensis growth showed that their cumulative contributions during the jointing and harvest periods reached 95.4% and 88%, respectively. (b) Phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) increased with the increase of P fertilizer gradient and then decreased and the maximum PUE was 13.14% under moderate P addition. The accumulation of biomass and nutrients in Leymus chinensis can be effectively improved by the addition of P fertilizer at 30.6 kg ha-1. Different P additions either moderately promoted or excessively inhibited Leymus chinensis growth and nutrient utilization.

RESUMO

Resilience and secure parental attachment have been proven as important factors to alleviate the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the effects of the two factors on PTSD and the mechanisms of its effect at different time points in the aftermath of trauma are still unclear. This study explores the relationship among parental attachment, resilience, and development of PTSD symptoms in adolescents from a longitudinal perspective following the Yancheng Tornado. Using cluster sampling method, a total of 351 Chinese adolescents, survivors of a severe tornado, were tested on their PTSD, parental attachment and resilience at 12-months and 18-months after experiencing the natural disaster. The results showed that our proposed model fit the data well: χ2/df = 3.197, CFI = 0.967, TLI = 0.950, RMSEA = 0.079. It revealed that the resilience at 18-months partially mediated the relationship between parental attachment at 12-months and PTSD at 18-months. Research results showed that parental attachment and resilience are key resources for coping with trauma.

RESUMO

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is one of the common extraintestinal infectious disease pathogens in chickens, geese, and other birds. It can cause a variety of infections, and even the death of poultry, causing enormous economic losses. However, the misuse and abuse of antibiotics in the poultry industry have led to the development of drug resistance in the gut microbes, posing a challenge for the treatment of APEC infections. It has been reported that the CpxRA two-component system has an effect on bacterial drug resistance, but the specific regulatory mechanism remains unclear. In this study, the regulatory mechanism of CpxRA on APEC biofilm formation and EmrKY efflux pump was investigated. The cpxRA knockout strain of E. coli APEC40 was constructed, and the molecular regulatory mechanism of CpxR on biofilms and efflux pump-coding genes were identified by biofilm formation assays, drug susceptibility test, real-time reverse transcription quantitative PCR, and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). The results indicated that CpxR can directly bind to the promoter region of emrKY and negatively regulate the sensitivity of bacteria to ofloxacin and erythromycin. These results confirm the important regulatory role of the CpxRA two-component system under antibiotic stress in APEC.

RESUMO

Cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) is one of the most common degenerative diseases of the spine that is commonly treated with surgery. The primary goal of surgery is to relieve symptoms through decompression or relieving pressure on compressed cervical nerves. Nevertheless, cutaneous pain distribution is not always predictable, making accurate diagnosis challenging and increasing the likelihood of inadequate surgical outcomes. With the widespread application of minimally invasive surgical techniques, the requirement for precise preoperative localization of the affected segments has become critical, especially when treating patients with multi-segmental CSR. Recently, the preoperative use of a selective nerve root block (SNRB) to localize the specific nerve roots involved in CSR has increased. However, few reviews discuss the currently used block approaches, risk factors, and other aspects of concern voiced by surgeons carrying out SNRB. This review summarized the main cervical SNRB approaches currently used clinically and the relevant technical details. Methods that can be used to decrease risk during cervical SNRB procedures, including choice of steroids, vessel avoidance, guidance with radiographs or ultra-sound, contrast agent usage, and other concerns, also are discussed. We concluded that a comprehensive understanding of the current techniques used for cervical SNRB would allow surgeons to perform cervical SNRB more safely.

RESUMO

Cold and drought stress are the most critical stresses encountered by crops and occur simultaneously under field conditions. However, it is unclear whether volatiles contribute to both cold and drought tolerance, and if so, by what mechanisms they act. Here, we show that airborne eugenol can be taken up by the tea (Camellia sinensis) plant and metabolized into glycosides, thus enhancing cold and drought tolerance of tea plants. A uridine diphosphate (UDP)-glucosyltransferase, UGT71A59, was discovered, whose expression is strongly induced by multiple abiotic stresses. UGT71A59 specifically catalyzes glucosylation of eugenol glucoside in vitro and in vivo. Suppression of UGT71A59 expression in tea reduced the accumulation of eugenol glucoside, lowered reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capacity, and ultimately impaired cold and drought stress tolerance. Exposure to airborne eugenol triggered a marked increase in UGT71A59 expression, eugenol glucoside accumulation, and cold tolerance by modulating ROS accumulation and CBF1 expression. It also promoted drought tolerance by altering abscisic acid homeostasis and stomatal closure. CBF1 and CBF3 play positive roles in eugenol-induced cold tolerance and CBF2 may be a negative regulator of eugenol-induced cold tolerance in tea plants. These results provide evidence that eugenol functions as a signal in cold and drought tolerance regulation and shed new light on the biological functions of volatiles in the response to multiple abiotic stresses in plants.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the clinical efficacy and imaging outcomes of unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE) with unilateral laminotomy for bilateral decompression (ULBD) in the treatment of severe lumbar spinal stenosis (SLSS). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 50 patients with SLSS treated with UBE-ULBD from October 2018 to March 2021. Visual analog scale (VAS) for back and legs pain, Oswestry disability index (ODI), modified Macnab criteria, complications, hospital stay, preoperative and postoperative dural sac cross-sectional area (DSCA) and Schizas grade, mean angle of facetectomy and osseous lateral recess decompression rate were examined. Results: The mean follow-up period was 10.7 months. The mean hospital stay was 2.76 ± 1.02 days. At the final follow-up, VAS for back pain and legs pain decreased from 7.22 ± 0.95 to 1.26 ± 0.44 and from 7.88 ± 0.69 to 1.18 ± 0.39, respectively; ODI decreased from 69.88 ± 6.32% to 14.96 ± 2.75%. According to the modified Macnab criteria, the results were excellent in 24 (48%), good in 22 (44%), and fair in 4 (8%). Excellent or good results (a satisfactory outcome) were obtained in 92% of the patients. There were 2 cases of complications of dural sac tear. The postoperative DSCA was significantly enlarged compared with that before surgery, from 44.74 ± 9.85 to 126.86 ± 14.81 mm2. According to Schizas grade, the stenosis grade changes from preoperative grade C in 16 cases, grade D in 34 cases, to postoperative grade A in 40 cases, and grade B in 10 cases. The mean angle of facetectomy of the ipsilateral facet joint was 70.87 ± 5.68 ∘ , contralateral was 65.07 ± 4.98 ∘ . The decompression rate was 70.81 ± 4.43% (ipsilateral side) and 71.22 ± 3.68% (contralateral). Conclusions: UBE-ULBD has a good clinical effect in the treatment of SLSS, and has achieved satisfactory results in spinal canal enlargement, undercutting of facet joints, and decompression effect. It is a safe and effective surgical for SLSS.

RESUMO

AIM: The glycaemic control of diabetes with depression was inconsistent from randomized controlled studies. This meta-analysis aimed to explore the effectiveness of intervention methods in diabetes with depression. METHODS: This study systematically searched electronic databases (PubMed, EBSCO, Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, and Cochrane) for studies published up to August 17, 2020. Standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95%CI were used to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions on HbA1c. Heterogeneity was estimated using the I2 statistic. Begg's test was used to assess the possible publication bias among studies. RESULTS: Twelve studies of 2444 cases were included in this study. The overall SMD is -0.22 and 95%CI -0.33 to -0.10 in 0-6 months of intervention group. The I2 and P were 18.4% and 0.26. There are no publication bias tested (z = 0.37, P = 0.72). CONCLUSION: Cognitive behavioral therapy and mindful self-compassion might be effective method to improve glycaemic control of diabetes with depression in 0-6 months.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the infuences on circadian rhythm of blood pressure in the patients with non-dipper essential hypertension between the combined treatment of time acupuncture and western medication and the simple western medication. METHODS: A total of 70 patients with non-dipper essential hypertension were randomized into an acupuncture plus western medication group (35 cases, 2 cases dropped out) and a western medication group (35 cases). In the western medication group, levamlodipine maleate tablets were taken orally, 2.5 mg each time, once daily. In the acupuncture plus western medication group, on the base of the treatment as the western medication group, acupuncture was applied specially in the period of the day from 7:00 am to 9:00 am. The acupoints included Fengchi (GB 20), Zhongwan (CV 12), Tianshu (ST 25), Hegu (LI 4), Quchi (LI 11), Zusanli (ST 36), etc. Acupuncture was given once daily, 5 treatments a week. The duration of treatment in the two groups was 4 weeks. The clinic blood pressure before and after treatment, 24 h ambulatory blood pressure and the levels of serum melatonin (MT) and 5-serotonin (5-HT) were observed in the two groups. RESULTS: The total effective rate of anti-hypertension was 75.8% (25/33) in the acupuncture plus western medication group, better than 54.3% (19/35) in the western medication group (P<0.05). The 24 h average systolic blood pressure, the daytime average systolic blood pressure, the daytime average diastolic pressure, and the nighttime average systolic blood pressure were all reduced after treatment in the two groups (P<0.05). The reduction effect of the aforementioned 4 indexes in the acupuncture plus western medication group was much more obvious as compared with the western medication group (P<0.05). After treatment, the serum level of MT was increased and 5-HT decreased in the patients of two groups (P<0.05). The serum level of MT in the acupuncture plus western medication group was higher than that in the western medication group and the level of 5-HT was lower than the western medication group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Time acupuncture therapy in the period of the day from 7:00 am to 9:00 am, combined with western medication effectively reduce blood pressure and regulate the levels of serum MT and 5-HT so as to maintain the circadian rhythm of blood pressure in patients with non-dipper essential hypertension. The therapeutic effect of this combined treatment is superior to simple western medication.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the surgical effects of modified kyphoplasty with controllable balloon dilatation for treatment of thoracolumbar osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF). METHODS: From April 2013 to October 2017, a total of 53 patients with thoracolumbar OVCF were treated with controllable balloon percutaneous kyphoplasty (C-PKP). Peri-operative parameters including days from injury to operation, operation time, injected cement volume, cement leakage and complications were collected. Visual analogue scale (VAS) and Cobb angle before and after operation were applied to evaluate surgical effects. Moreover, a total of 53 cases treated with traditional balloon of percutaneous kyphoplasty were retrospectively analyzed and compared with C-PKP in above parameters. RESULTS: C-PKP achieved significant fewer events of cement leakage (type C) than that of traditional PKP (5/53 vs 13/53, p < 0.01). The patients were followed up for 10.8 ± 4.2 months; VAS and Cobb angle of the injured vertebra in both two groups at three days and final follow-up were significantly improved compared with that before surgery (p < 0.05), while there were no significant differences between the two groups regarding the VAS and Cobb angle at corresponding time points (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: C-PKP technology is a safe and efficient way for the treatment of thoracolumbar OVCF, and it can reduce cement leakage.

RESUMO

We present the case of a 91-year-old woman who presented with a 2day history of progressive pain and immobility of the right shoulder joint after fever of unknown etiology. Aeromonas sobria was isolated from a culture of purulent synovial fluid. The clinical condition gradually improved with the application of appropriate antibiotics and no surgical intervention was necessary. This report indicates that acute septic arthritis may result from Aeromonas veronii biotype sobria infections in healthy people. This case is contrary to the previous reports due to the absence of obvious risk factors.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the curative effect and the recessive loss of blooding of PFNA for the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures of femur. METHODS: From January 2012 to January 2015, a total of 49 patients with intertrochanteric fractures of femur were treated with proximal femoral anti-rotation nail including 41 males and 8 females with an average age of 79 years old ranging from 65 to 91 years old. According to the modified Evans type, 1 case was type I, 12 cases were type II, 36 cases were type III. All cases were fresh fractures. Patients had hip pain, movement limited, joint swelling, bruising, extorsion deformity, X-ray and CT examination showed completely fractures. All patients were treated by closed reduction and PFNA internal fixation. Three comminuted fractures using closed reduction were not satisfied, then were treated by limited PFNA fixation after open reduction. RESULTS: The patients' incision got the grade A healing, no complications such as infection and internal fixation failure happened. All patients were followed up from 6 to 36 months (means 22 months). The pain VAS score decreased from preoperative 7.70±1.97 to 1.00±0.26 at 6 months after operation(P<0.01). Harris hip score improved from preoperative 8.70±4.19 to 91.70±5.31 at 6 months after operation(P<0.01). The outcome at 6 months after operation was excellent in 34 cases, good in 7, poor in 1. The fracture healing time was from 8 to 16 weeks with an average of 12 weeks after operation. One patient with osteoporosis, crushing broken, poor compliance, associated with schizophrenia at the same time, appeared with the displacement of the femoral greater trochanter, with conservative treatment for healing. CONCLUSIONS: Intertrochanteric fractures of femur are common in the elderly trauma, in pain relief, recovery of hip function, to provide quality of life for the patients, PFNA achieved satisfactory effect, but its existence is worth to pay close attention to the recessive loss of blood.

RESUMO

Serine/threonine-specific cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) are key regulatory elements in eukaryotic cell cycle progression, and the dysregulation of CDKs has been implicated in cancers. Therefore, CDKs have been identified as anti-cancer targets for the development of small-molecule drugs. In this Letter, virtual screening and biological evaluation were performed to identify novel lead structures that allosterically disrupt the interaction between CDK2 and cyclin A3, which are directed toward a noncatalytic binding pocket of CDK2. Ultimately, B2 was identified as exhibiting superior CDK2/cyclin A3 inhibition activity. In addition, our results indicated that B2 exhibited antiproliferative activities against a broad spectrum of human cancer cell lines. Significantly, B2 certainly interrupted the interaction between CDK2 and cyclin A3 and exhibited a concentration-dependent trend. In summary, our results suggest that B2 is the first effective allosteric chemical small-molecule CDK2 inhibitor to be discovered, and further lead optimization may result in a series of novel anti-CDK2 agents.

RESUMO

In order to resolve the problem of poor permeability of sewage sludge compost (SSC) which was used as the substitution of peat, perlite was used to regulate the permeability of the sewage. The pure SSC was used as control. The proportions of perlite in the mixtures with SSC were 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% (V/V), respectively. The effects of different perlite ratios on the physical and chemical properties and the growth of Tagetes patula were studied. The bulk density, water holding porosity and water holding porosity to aeration porosity decreased, but the total porosity and aeration porosity increased with the increasing addition of perlite to the SSC. For the chemical properties, the pH increased, and the EC and nutrient contents decreased with the increasing addition of perlite to the SSC. The aboveground biomass and flowers of T. patula were the highest in the 60% perlite treatment, and the lowest in the pure SSC treatment. The root morphology and activity were the best in the 40%, 60% and 80% perlite treatments. Aeration was the strongest factor to impact the maximum root length and average root diameter. Perlite promoted the growth of T. patula mainly through impacting the physical properties of the SSC. The addition of 60% perlite to the SSC could significantly improve the poor aeration and decrease the high salinity greatly in the SSC and regulate the growth of the root and aboveground of T. patula.
