RESUMO

Glioblastoma (GBM) recurrence leads to high mortality, which remains a major concern in clinical therapy. Herein, an injectable triptolide (TP)-preloaded hydrogel (TP@DNH) accompanied by a postoperative injection strategy is developed to prevent the recurrence of GBM. With a potential inhibitor of the NRF2/SLC7A11/GPX4 axis, it is demonstrated that TP can deactivate glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) from the source of glutathione (GSH) biosynthesis, thereby activating ferroptosis in GBM cells by blocking the neutralization of intracellular lipid peroxide (LPO). Based on acid-sensitive Fe3+/tannic acid (TA) metal-phenolic networks (MPNs), the TP@DNH hydrogel can induce the effective generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) through Fe3+/TA-mediated Fenton reaction and achieve controllable release of TP in resected GBM cavity. Due to ROS generation and GPX4 deactivation, postoperative injection of TP@DNH can achieve high-level ferroptosis through dual-pathway LPO accumulation, remarkably suppressing the growth of recurrent GBM and prolonging the overall survival in orthotopic GBM relapse mouse model. This work provides an alternative paradigm for regulating ferroptosis in the postoperative treatment of GBM.

Neuroinflammation is an innate and adaptive immune response initiated by the release of inflammatory mediators from various immune cells in response to harmful stimuli. While initially beneficial and protective, prolonged or excessive neuroinflammation has been identified in clinical and experimental studies as a key pathological driver of numerous neurological diseases and an accelerant of the aging process. Glycolysis, the metabolic process that converts glucose to pyruvate or lactate to produce adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), is often dysregulated in many neuroinflammatory disorders and in the affected nerve cells. Enhancing glucose availability and uptake, as well as increasing glycolytic flux through pharmacological or genetic manipulation of glycolytic enzymes, has shown potential protective effects in several animal models of neuroinflammatory diseases. Modulating the glycolytic pathway to improve glucose metabolism and ATP production may help alleviate energy deficiencies associated with these conditions. In this review, we examine six neuroinflammatory diseases-stroke, Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and depression-and provide evidence supporting the role of glycolysis in their treatment. We also explore the potential link between inflammation-induced aging and glycolysis. Additionally, we briefly discuss the critical role of glycolysis in three types of neuronal cells-neurons, microglia, and astrocytes-within physiological processes. This review highlights the significance of glycolysis in the pathology of neuroinflammatory diseases and its relevance to the aging process.

OBJECTIVES: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess whether patients with connective tissue disease (CTD)-associated interstitial lung diseases (ILD) have an increased prevalence of cardiovascular (CV) disease and to validate associated risk factors. METHODS: The PRISMA guidelines and PICO model were followed. We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library databases, Scopus, and Directory of Open Access Journals from inception to April 2024. RESULTS: Thirteen studies comprising of 12,520 patients were included. Patients with CTD-ILD had a significantly increased risk of CV disease than patients with CTD (relative risk [RR] = 1.65, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.41, 1.93), which are related to the proportion of men (P = 0.001) and the proportion of smokers (P = 0.045). Subgroup analysis found that patients with CTD-ILD had a higher risk of heart failure (RR = 2.84, 95 % CI: 1.50, 5.39), arrhythmia (RR = 1.55, 95 % CI: 1.22, 1.97) than patients with CTD. Another subgroup analysis showed that RA-ILD and SSc-ILD were associated with an increased risk of CV disease, but not IIM-ILD and MCTD-ILD (RA-ILD: RR = 2.19, 95 % CI: 1.27, 3.80; SSc-ILD: RR = 1.53, 95 % CI: 1.29, 1.82). Besides, patients with CTD-ILD had a higher prevalence of pulmonary arterial hypertension (RR = 2.48, 95 % CI: 1.69, 3.63) than patients with CTD. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with CTD-ILD had a 1.65 times increased risk of CV than patients with CTD-non-ILD, with increased prevalence of heart failure and arrhythmia. The risk of CV disease in SSc-ILD and RA-ILD is increased and we should pay more attention to male smokers. In addition, compared with CTD patients, CTD-ILD patients had a higher risk of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, are high-risk factors for delirium. However, the implementation of nonpharmacological interventions faces major challenges during an infectious disease pandemic. AIMS: To evaluate the effect of the nurse-led Hospital Elder Life Program (NL-HELP) on delirium reduction among delirious patients with COVID-19. DESIGN: A single-blind randomized clinical trial. METHODS: This study recruited 122 delirious patients with COVID-19 from internal medicine wards at West China Hospital in China between January 30 and March 31, 2023. Participants were randomized to the NL-HELP group (n = 62) or the usual care group (n = 60). Patients in the intervention group received the NL-HELP protocol three times daily for 7 days. Patients in the control group received usual care. The primary outcome was the absence/presence of delirium during the intervention period measured by the 3-min Diagnostic Confusion Assessment Method. RESULTS: Fewer patients remained delirious in the NL-HELP group than in the control group. There were significantly more delirium-free days in the NL-HELP group than in the usual care group. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of delirium severity, length of hospital stay, delirium at 30 days after discharge, 30-day readmission, 30-day mortality, physical function or quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that NL-HELP could reduce the presence of delirium in delirious patients. No effect was observed in terms of shortening the length of hospital stay, reducing 30-day mortality, or improving quality of life. IMPACT: NL-HELP may be effective in reducing the presence of delirium in delirious patients. Further research is needed to determine whether the NL-HELP can improve patient outcomes (e.g. mortality and quality of life) in a larger study. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Caregivers of delirious patients were invited to provide intervention strategies to prevent or abate delirium, including environmental management, orientation communications and identification of alert signs. Objective: This study aims to characterize the prevalence and associated factors of cognitive impairment in older adults within Chinese community settings. Background: Research exploring the interrelation between malnutrition and cognitive impairment in the older adult community-dwelling population is scarce. The impact of nutritional status on cognitive function in aging adults has not been definitively established. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in one urban and one rural community in Chengdu, China, from October 2022 to March 2023. The sample included 706 older adults. Logistic regression was utilized to determine independent risk factors for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Results: The study found a significant prevalence of MCI at 32.0% among the older adult population. Among those suffering from malnutrition, 55.6% were affected by MCI. The logistic regression analysis indicated that malnutrition risk (OR = 2.192, 95% CI 1.431 to 3.357, p < 0.001), rural residence (OR = 1.475, 95% CI 1.003 to 2.170, p = 0.048), age (70-79 years old; OR = 2.425, 95% CI 1.611 to 3.651, p < 0.001; ≥80 years old: OR = 4.773, 95% CI 2.571 to 8.859, p < 0.001), male (OR = 1.584, 95% CI 1.085 to 2.313, p = 0.017), middle education level (OR = 0.986, 95% CI 1.627 to 5.482, p < 0.001), and ADL dependence (OR = 1.810, 95% CI 1.158 to 2.827, p = 0.009) were significantly associated with the occurrence of MCI. Conclusion: The findings indicate a widespread occurrence of MCI in community-dwelling older Chinese adults. The association between malnutrition, as measured by the Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF), and cognitive decline is evident. Older adult individuals with nutritional risk, advancing age, rural residence, male gender, moderate education, and ADL dependency are at increased likelihood of developing MCI. Longitudinal research is needed to clarify the temporal relationships between MCI, demographic factors, and whether improvements in nutritional status or ADL can reduce the incidence of MCI in this population.

A Hebbian model of circuit remodeling predicts that two sets of inputs with sufficiently distinct activity patterns will synaptically capture separate sets of target cells. Mice in which a subset of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) target the wrong region of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) provide the conditions for testing this prediction. In albino mice, mistargeted RGC axons form an island of terminals that is distinct from the surrounding neuropil. Blocking retinal activity during development prevents the formation of this island. However, the synaptic connectivity of the island was unknown. Here, we combine light and electron microscopy to determine if this activity-dependent island of axon terminals represent a synaptically segregated subcircuit. We reconstructed the microcircuitry of the boundary between the island and non-island RGCs and found a remarkably strong segregation within retinogeniculate connectivity. We conclude that, when sets of retinal input are established in the wrong part of the dLGN, the developing circuitry responds by forming a synaptically isolated subcircuit from the otherwise fully connected network. The fact that there is a developmental starting condition that can induce a synaptically segregated microcircuit has important implications for our understanding of the organization of visual circuits and for our understanding of the implementation of activity dependent development.

Objective. The rapid and accurate assessment of internal exposure dose is a crucial safeguard for personnel health and safety. This study aims to investigate a precise and efficient GPU Monte Carlo simulation approach for internal exposure dose calculation. It directly calculates doses from common radioactive nuclides intake, like60Co for occupational exposure, allowing personalized assessments.Approach. This study developed a GPU-accelerated Monte Carlo program for internal exposure on radionuclide intake, successfully realizing photoelectronic coupled transport, nuclide simulation, and optimized acceleration. The generation of internal irradiation sources and sampling methods were achieved, along with the establishment of a personalized phantom construction process. Three irradiation scenarios were simulated to assess computational accuracy and efficiency, and to investigate the influence of posture variations on internal dose estimations.Main results. Using the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) voxel-type phantom, the internal dose of radionuclides in individual organs was calculated, exhibiting relative deviation of less than 3% in comparison to organ dose results interpolated by Specific Absorbed Fractions in ICRP Publication 133. Employing the Chinese reference phantom for calculating internal irradiation dose from the intake of various radionuclides, the use of GPU Monte Carlo program significantly shortened the simulation time compared to using CPU programs, by a factor of 150-500. Internal dose estimation utilizing a seated Chinese phantom revealed up to a 75% maximum difference in organ dose compared to the same phantom in a standing posture.Significance. This study presents a rapid GPU-based simulation method for internal irradiation doses, capable of directly simulating dose outcomes from nuclide intake and accommodating individualized phantoms for more realistic and expeditious calculations tailored to specific internal irradiation scenarios. It provides an effective and feasible tool for precisely calculating internal irradiation doses in real-world scenarios.

Dewatering of aqueous azeotropes is crucial and pervasive in raw chemical refineries and solvent recovery in the chemical industry but is recognized as one of the most energy-intensive processes. Pervaporation using crystalline molecular sieve membranes provides an energy-efficient solution, but stress loads stemming from thermal and mechanical risks of pervaporation are most likely to cause membrane cracks, which greatly reduces reliability of membranes in real-world applications. Here, we propose adaptive healing of stress-induced dynamic cracks (AHSDC) in the membrane in a risk-responding manner before separation by using in situ-formed nanoparticles in the same chemical environment. These nanoparticles naturally filled in fissure gaps once cracks formed in the membrane, forming adaptive healing zones. Without loss of dewatering capacity, the separation durability of the membrane after AHSDC was improved by at least two orders of magnitude. The membrane also exhibited tolerance to industrial-grade azeotropes that epitomize industrial multisource nature and complexity.

Developing devices with a wide-temperature range persistent photoconductivity (PPC) and ultra-low power consumption remains a significant challenge for optical synaptic devices used in neuromorphic computing. By harnessing the PPC properties in materials, it can achieve optical storage and neuromorphic computing, surpassing the von Neuman architecture-based systems. However, previous research implemented PPC required additional gate voltages and low temperatures, which need additional energy consumption and PPC cannot be achieved across a wide temperature range. Here, we fabricated a simple heterojunctions using zinc(II)-meso-tetraphenyl porphyrin (ZnTPP) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). By leveraging the strong binding energy at the heterojunction interface and the unique band structure, the heterojunction achieved PPC over an exceptionally wide temperature range (77 K-400 K). Remarkably, it demonstrated nonvolatile storage for up to 2×104 s, without additional gate voltage. The minimum energy consumption for each synaptic event is as low as 6.5 aJ. Furthermore, we successfully demonstrate the feasibility to manufacture a flexible wafer-scale array utilizing this heterojunction. We applied it to autonomous driving under extreme temperatures and achieved as a high impressive accuracy rate as 94.5%. This tunable and stable wide-temperature PPC capability holds promise for ultra-low-power neuromorphic computing.

Immune checkpoint blockades (ICBs) have revolutionized cancer therapy through unleashing anti-tumor adaptive immunity. Despite that, they are usually effective only in a small subset of patients and relapse can occur in patients who initially respond to the treatment. Recent breakthroughs in this field have identified innate immune checkpoints harnessed by cancer cells to escape immunosurveillance from innate immunity. MHC1 appears to be such a molecule expressed on cancer cells which can transmit a negative signal to innate immune cells through interaction with leukocyte immunoglobulin like receptor B1 (LILRB1). The review aims to summarize the current understanding of MHC1/LILRB1 axis on mediating cancer immune evasion with an emphasis on the therapeutic potential to block this axis for cancer therapy. Nevertheless, one should note that this field is still in its infancy and more studies are warranted to further verify the effectiveness and safety in clinical as well as the potential to combine with existing immune checkpoints.

RESUMO

Drug resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma has posed significant obstacles to effective treatment. Recent evidence indicates that, in addition to traditional gene mutations, epigenetic recoding plays a crucial role in HCC drug resistance. Unlike irreversible gene mutations, epigenetic changes are reversible, offering a promising avenue for preventing and overcoming drug resistance in liver cancer. This review focuses on various epigenetic modifications relevant to drug resistance in HCC and their underlying mechanisms. Additionally, we introduce current clinical epigenetic drugs and clinical trials of these drugs as regulators of drug resistance in other solid tumors. Although there is no clinical study to prevent the occurrence of drug resistance in liver cancer, the development of liquid biopsy and other technologies has provided a bridge to achieve this goal.

BACKGROUND: In 2009, China launched a new round of healthcare reform to provide households with secure, efficient, convenient, equitable and affordable healthcare services. Healthcare reform is underpinned by three critical pillars: the health workforce, funding, and infrastructure, with reform of the health workforce being particularly significant. OBJECTIVE: This study analyses the disparities in regional distribution and the inequity of healthcare workforce allocation across hospitals and primary health centers in China over twelve years. DESIGN: Retrospective longitudinal data from the National Health Statistics Yearbook 2011-2022 and National Statistical Yearbook in China from 2011 to 2022 were collected for analysis. PARTICIPANTS: The focus was on hospitals and primary health centers, explicitly examining their health technician and nursing workforce. METHODS: The research utilized four key indicators of the healthcare workforce to evaluate the distribution of health resources between hospitals and primary health centers. Furthermore, the Gini coefficient and Theil index were employed to assess the inequality in allocating the health workforce. RESULTS: Between 2010 and 2021, there was a nationwide increase in the ratio of health workers per 1000 population in hospitals and primary health centers. It is noted that rural districts had higher ratios than urban districts in terms of the number of health technicians and nurses per 1000 population, whether in hospitals or primary health centers; western districts had higher ratios than eastern and central districts did. In the same year, at different levels of medical institutions, the Theil indices of health technicians and nurses in hospitals were lower than those in primary health centers in terms of both demographic and geographical dimensions. Regarding the allocation of the health workforce by population, the Gini coefficient remained below 0.3, while for geographical allocation, it exceeded 0.4. CONCLUSIONS: This study analyzed the temporal trends and inequality of health-resource allocation at the hospital and primary health center levels in China, noting trends of improvements in the quantity and inequality in health workforce allocation from 2010 to 2021, suggesting the success of the government's efforts to advance healthcare reform since 2009. The allocation of health workforce based on population exhibits greater fairness compared to geographical distribution.

Epidermal growth factor receptor-targeted (EGFR-targeted) therapies show promise for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but they are ineffective in a third of patients who lack EGFR mutations. This underlines the need for personalized treatments for patients with EGFR wild-type NSCLC. A genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 screen has identified the enzyme phosphoribosylaminoimidazole carboxylase/phosphoribosylaminoimidazole succinocarboxamide synthetase (PAICS), which is vital in de novo purine biosynthesis and tumor development, as a potential drug target for EGFR wild-type NSCLC. We have further confirmed that PAICS expression is significantly increased in NSCLC tissues and correlates with poor patient prognosis. Knockdown of PAICS resulted in a marked reduction in both in vitro and in vivo proliferation of EGFR wild-type NSCLC cells. Additionally, PAICS silencing led to cell-cycle arrest in these cells, with genes involved in the cell cycle pathway being differentially expressed. Consistently, an increase in cell proliferation ability and colony number was observed in cells with upregulated PAICS in EGFR wild-type NSCLC. PAICS silencing also caused DNA damage and cell-cycle arrest by interacting with DNA repair genes. Moreover, decreased IMPDH2 activity and activated PI3K-AKT signaling were observed in NSCLC cells with EGFR mutations, which may compromise the effectiveness of PAICS knockdown. Therefore, PAICS plays an oncogenic role in EGFR wild-type NSCLC and represents a potential therapeutic target for this disease.

Acquiring a deep insight into the electron transfer mechanism and applications of one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) has always been a significant challenge. Herein, through direct observation using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (AC-TEM), we verify the stable formation of a high-quality 1D heterostructure composed of PbI2@single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The phenomenon of electron transfer between PbI2 and SWCNT is elucidated through spectroscopic investigations, including Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electrochemical testing indicates the electron transfer and enduring stability of 1D PbI2 within SWCNTs. Moreover, leveraging the aforementioned electron transfer mechanism, we engineer self-powered photodetectors that exhibit exceptional photocurrent and a 3-order-of-magnitude switching ratio. Subsequently, we reveal its unique electron transfer behavior using Kelvin probe force microscopic (KPFM) tests. According to KPFM, the average surface potential of SWCNTs decreases by 80.6 mV after filling. Theoretical calculations illustrate a charge transfer of 0.02 e per unit cell. This work provides an effective strategy for the in-depth investigation and application of electron transfer in 1D vdWHs.

PURPOSE: This meta-analysis aimed to explore correlations between vitamin D and idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM). METHODS: A comprehensive database search was conducted on 13 October 2020. Mean differences (MDs) and aggregated risk ratios (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to determine the correlation between vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and IIM. Statistical analysis was performed with RevMan 5.4 and Stata15, statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: Search revealed five studies with 286 IIM patients and 480 healthy controls. Results with random-effects modeling indicated that serum vitamin D levels were significantly lower in IIM patients than in healthy controls (MD = -13.10 ng/mL; 95% CI: -16.51 to -9.68; p < 0.00001). No differences were found between patients with IIM and other autoimmune diseases on vitamin D levels (MD =-2.65 ng/mL; 95% CI: -11.31-6.01; p = 0.55). In two studies with 185 IIM patients, those with low vitamin D levels exhibited higher creatine kinase levels (MD = 85.20 IU/L; 95% CI: 72.67-97.73; p < 0.00001) than those with normal vitamin D levels. VDD was correlated with an increased risk of IIM (RR = 3.24, 95% CI: 1.81-5.79; p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis showed correlations between vitamin D level and IIM. The results indicated, VDD may be a risk factor for IIM, a determinant of immune dysregulation in IIM, or a consequence of IIM. Also, it implied further research to determine whether vitamin D supplementation is beneficial for patients with IIM.

RESUMO

This study aims to assess the prevalence of geriatric syndromes and identify factors associated with multiple geriatric syndromes in community-dwelling older adults in China. We utilized a convenience sampling method to recruit older adults and from one rural and one urban community in Chengdu, China, from October 2022 to March 2023. A total of 706 older adults aged 60 years or older were included. Ten geriatric syndromes were investigated including two mental disorders: depressive symptoms, cognitive impairment; and eight somatic disorders: pain, falls, sleep disturbance, constipation, polypharmacy, multimorbidity, malnutrition and frailty. Multiple geriatric syndromes were defined as an individual having two or more geriatric syndromes. The data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics. The independent risk factors for multiple geriatric syndromes were assessed using a logistic regression model. This study found that 90.5% of the participants had at least one geriatric syndrome, with 72.8% experiencing multiple geriatric syndromes. The top four geriatric syndromes in our study were polypharmacy (58.5%), malnutrition/at risk of malnutrition (43.1%), multimorbidity (42.1%), and frailty/prefrailty (34.3%). Of the older adults, 368(52.1%) had only somatic disorders, 18(2.5%) had only mental disorders and 253 (35.8%) had somatic-mental disorders. According to the logistic regression analysis, residence, age, marriage, BMI, and self-related health were significantly associated with multiple geriatric syndromes among older adults. This study highlights that multiple geriatric syndromes are prevalent among community-dwelling older adults in China, and underscores the significance of certain demographic factors in their occurrence. Future longitudinal studies are needed to establish the temporal relationship between multiple geriatric syndromes and these demographic factors, as well as to explore causal relationships and effective prevention strategies for geriatric syndrome.

The results from studies on relationship between caffeine intake and risk of anxiety remains controversial, so we conducted a meta-analysis to summarize the evidence about the association between caffeine intake and risk of anxiety. Relevant articles were identified by researching PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane library, Embase, CNKI, WANFANG DATA, SinoMed and VIP from the inception to December, 2022. Three investigators independently sifted through the literature, extracted the data, and evaluated the quality of the included studies based on predetermined selection criteria and assessed articles with Risk of bias assessment tool for Cochrane systematic reviews and analytical cross-sectional study quality assessment tool from JBI PACES. After assessing the quality of the literature, meta-analysis was performed using Revman 5.4 and Stata 12.0. Data were obtained from eight articles, and 546 participants from 14 studies in eight articles from healthy populations were included in the caffeine-anxiety analyses. As the scales used to assess anxiety vary in the literature, we chose standardized mean difference as the outcome indicator. In terms of overall effect, the results of the meta-analysis showed that caffeine intake increased the risk of anxiety [SMD = 0.94, 95% Cl = (0.28, 1.60), p < 0.05]. After suspecting that dose size might be responsible for the heterogeneity by sensitivity analysis, we performed subgroup analysis according to dose size and found that low-dose caffeine intake moderately increased the risk of anxiety [SMD = 0.61, 95%Cl = (0.42, 0.79), p < 0.05], whereas high-dose caffeine intake had a highly significant increase in the risk of anxiety [SMD = 2.86, 95%Cl = (2.50, 3.22), p < 0.05]. The results confirm that caffeine intake is associated with an elevated risk of anxiety in healthy individuals without psychiatric disorders, especially when the intake dose is greater than 400 mg.

The emergence of one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (1D vdWHs) opens up potential fields with unique properties, but precise synthesis remains a challenge. The utilization of mixed conductive types of carbon nanotubes as templates has imposed restrictions on the investigation of the electrical behavior and interlayer interaction of 1D vdWHs. In this study, we efficiently encapsulated silver iodide in high-purity semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (sSWCNTs), forming 1D AgI@sSWCNT vdWHs. We characterized the semiconductor-metal transition and increased the carrier concentration of individual AgI@sSWCNTs via sensitive dielectric force microscopy and confirmed the results through electrical device tests. The electrical behavior transition was attributed to an interlayer charge transfer, as demonstrated by Kelvin probe force microscopy. Furthermore, we showed that this method of synthesizing 1D heterostructures can be extended to other metal halides. This work opens the door for the further exploration of the electrical properties of 1D vdWHs.

Extraction of low concentration linear alkanes (C5-C7) from various isomers is critical for the petrochemical industry. At present, the separation of alkane isomers is mainly accomplished by distillation, which results in substantial energy expenditure. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with well-tailored nanopores have been demonstrated to be capable of realizing molecule-level separation. In this study, oriented HKUST-1 membranes are formulated according to the morphology-biased principle and finally realized with a low dose synthesis method for terminating undesired crystal nucleation and growth. The fully exposed triangular sieving pore array of the membrane induces configuration entropic diffusion to split linear alkanes from mono-branched and di-branched isomers as well as their cyclical counterparts. Typically, the current separation technique consumes 91% less energy than vacuum distillation. Furthermore, our membranes can realize one-step extraction of normal-pentane, normal-hexane and normal-heptane from a ten-component alkane isomer solution that mimics light naphtha.

Objective: To explore the changes in dynamic functional brain network connectivity (dFNC) in patients with early-onset bipolar disorder (BD). Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data were collected from 39 patients with early-onset BD and 22 healthy controls (HCs). Four repeated and stable dFNC states were characterised by independent component analysis (ICA), sliding time windows and k-means clustering, and three dFNC temporal metrics (fraction of time, mean dwell time and number of transitions) were obtained. The dFNC temporal metrics and the differences in dFNC between the two groups in different states were evaluated, and the correlations between the differential dFNC metrics and neuropsychological scores were analysed. Results: The dFNC analysis showed four connected patterns in all subjects. Compared with the HCs, the dFNC patterns of early-onset BD were significantly altered in all four states, mainly involving impaired cognitive and perceptual networks. In addition, early-onset BD patients had a decreased fraction of time and mean dwell time in state 2 and an increased mean dwell time in state 3 (p < 0.05). The mean dwell time in state 3 of BD showed a positive correlation trend with the HAMA score (r = 0.4049, p = 0.0237 × 3 > 0.05 after Bonferroni correction). Conclusion: Patients with early-onset BD had abnormal dynamic properties of brain functional network connectivity, suggesting that their dFNC was unstable, mainly manifesting as impaired coordination between cognitive and perceptual networks. This study provided a new imaging basis for the neuropathological study of emotional and cognitive deficits in early-onset BD.
