RESUMO

There has been increasing concern regarding the adverse environmental and health effects of organic pollutants. A list of priority control organic pollutants (PCOPs) can provide regulatory frameworks for the use and monitoring of organic compounds in the environment. In this study, 20,010 groundwater samples were collected from 15 "first level" groundwater resource zones in China. Fifty (50) organic compounds were analyzed based on their prevalence, occurrence, and physicochemical properties (persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity). Results showed that 16 PCOPs, including 12 pesticides, 3 aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs), and 1 phthalate ester, were recognized. Pesticides and AHs accounted for 75 % and 18.75 % of the high-priority pollutants, respectively. There were significant differences in PCOPs between confined and phreatic groundwater. Higher concentrations of pesticides were mainly detected in phreatic groundwater. PCOPs detected in samples from the 15 groundwater resource zones were mainly pesticides and AHs. The groundwater data indicate that the organic compounds detected in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), Yangtze River Basin (YZB), Liaohe River Basin (LRB), and Songhua River Basin (SRB) are mainly categorized as Q1 (high priority) and Q2 (medium priority) pollutants based on the contaminants ranking system in China. The findings from this study offer a snapshot of the wide distribution of PCOPs in the surveyed regions, and are expected to establishing treatment and prevention measures at both the regional and national levels in China.

RESUMO

Sulfonamides, quinolones, tetracyclines, and macrolides are the most prevalent classes of antibiotics used in both medical treatment and agriculture. The misuse of antibiotics leads to their extensive dissemination in the environment. These antibiotics can modify the structure and functionality of microbial communities, consequently impacting microbial-mediated nitrogen cycling processes including nitrification, denitrification, and anammox. They can change the relative abundance of nirK/norB contributing to the emission of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the presence of these four antibiotic classes across different environmental matrices and synthesizes current knowledge of their effects on the nitrogen cycle, including the underlying mechanisms. Such an overview is crucial for understanding the ecological impacts of antibiotics and for guiding future research directions. The presence of antibiotics in the environment varies widely, with significant differences in concentration and type across various settings. We conducted a comprehensive review of over 70 research articles that compare various aspects including processes, antibiotics, concentration ranges, microbial sources, experimental methods, and mechanisms of influence. Antibiotics can either inhibit, have no effect, or even stimulate nitrification, denitrification, and anammox, depending on the experimental conditions. The influence of antibiotics on the nitrogen cycle is characterized by dose-dependent responses, primarily inhibiting nitrification, denitrification, and anammox. This is achieved through alterations in microbial community composition and diversity, carbon source utilization, enzyme activities, electron transfer chain function, and the abundance of specific functional enzymes and antibiotic resistance genes. These alterations can lead to diminished removal of reactive nitrogen and heightened nitrous oxide emissions, potentially exacerbating the greenhouse effect and related environmental issues. Future research should consider diverse reaction mechanisms and expand the scope to investigate the combined effects of multiple antibiotics, as well as their interactions with heavy metals and other chemicals or organisms.

RESUMO

Due to the rapid development of human beings, heavy metals are occurred in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and Panxi Plateau, the special dry and hot climate areas. Pb and Cu can be quickly transferred through water-plant-animal, further harm to human health by food chain. Therefore, the study of heavy metal treatment is imminent. In this study, Biochar-montmorillonite composites were prepared by co-pyrolysis and characterized, and their ability to remove lead and copper from water-soil process were tracked. And their effectiveness in remediating soil contaminated by lead and copper was documented. The composite material has the rich pore structure, large specific surface area (81.5 m2/g) and a variety of surface functional groups such as C-C, CO, ester-metal and metal-oxygen bonds. Pb and Cu can be effectively adsorbed and fixed to the level of no harm to human health. The adsorption reaction of lead and copper on the Biochar-montmorillonite composites is more suitable to be described by Langmuir adsorption and pseudo-second-order kinetics models. The saturation adsorption capacity of the composite for Pb was measured as 212.5 mg/g. For Cu, it was 136.5 mg/g. The data were fitted by a two-compartment first-order kinetic model. ffast for Pb and Cu is estimated to be 0.81 and 0.78, respective. Fast adsorption is dominant and belongs to typical chemical adsorption, which is consistent with the second-order kinetic results. With 5 % of the composite, approximately 80 % of exchangeable heavy metals in those soils collected from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and Panxi Plateau were reduced. The biochar-montmorillonite composites made Pb and Cu change to stable residual state, up to 35 %. Besides, it effectively restored the activity of urease and sucrase in soils. Results indicated that biochar-montmorillonite composites can be effectively used as an environment-friendly adsorbent or passivator to purify heavy metals in soils.

RESUMO

The impact of antibiotics on denitrification has emerged as a significant topic; however, there is a dearth of mechanistic understanding regarding the effects of multiple antibiotics at the ng/L level on denitrification in groundwater. This study conducted five field samplings between March 2019 and July 2021 at two representative monitoring wells. The investigation utilized metagenomic sequencing to unveil the antibiotic mechanisms influencing denitrification. Results revealed the detection of 16 out of 64 antibiotics, with a maximum detection frequency and total concentration of 100 % and 187 ng/L, respectively. Additionally, both nitrate and total antibiotic concentrations exhibited a gradual decrease along the groundwater flow direction. Metagenomic evidence indicated that denitrification served as the dominant biogeochemical process controlling nitrate attenuation in groundwater. However, the denitrification capacity experienced significant inhibition in the presence of multiple antibiotics at the ng/L level. This inhibition was attributed to decreases in the relative abundance of dominant denitrifying bacteria (Candidatus_Scalindua, Herminiimonas and unclassified_p_Planctomycetes) and denitrifying functional genes (narGH, nirKS and norB), signifying the pressure exerted by antibiotics on denitrifying bacteria. The variation in antibiotic concentration (∆Cantibiotics) indicated a change in antibiotic pressure on denitrifying bacteria. A larger ∆Cantibiotics corresponded to a greater rebound in the relative abundance of denitrifying functional genes, resulting in a faster denitrification rate (Kdenitrification). Field observations further demonstrated a positive correlation between Kdenitrification and ∆Cantibiotics. Comparatively, a higher Kdenitrification observed at higher ∆Cantibiotics was primarily due to the enrichment of more nondominant denitrifying bacteria carrying key denitrifying functional genes. In conclusion, this study underscores that multiple antibiotics at the ng/L level in groundwater inhibited denitrification, and the degree of inhibition was closely related to ∆Cantibiotics.

RESUMO

Subalpine meadow soil with high moisture and humus content is a unique soil type in the Zoige Plateau. Oxytetracycline and copper are common soil contaminants which interact to form compound pollution. Oxytetracycline's adsorption on natural subalpine meadow soil and its components (humin and the soil without iron and manganese oxides) was studied in the laboratory with and without the presence of Cu2+. The effects of temperature, pH and Cu2+ concentration were documented in batch experiments, allowing deduction of the main sorption mechanisms. The adsorption process had two phases: one rapid, taking place in the first 6 h, and another slower, reaching equilibrium at around 36 h. The adsorption kinetics were pseudo-second-order, and the adsorption isotherm conformed to the Langmuir model at 25 °C. Higher concentrations oxytetracycline increased the adsorption, but higher temperature did not. The presence of Cu2+ had no effect on the equilibrium time, but the amount and rate adsorbed were much greater with Cu2+ concentration increased (except for the soil without iron and manganese oxides). The amounts adsorbed with/without Cu2+ were in the order the humin from subalpine meadow soil (7621 and 7186 µg/g) > the subalpine meadow soil (7298 and 6925 µg/g) > the soil without iron and manganese oxides (7092 and 6862 µg/g), but the difference among those adsorbents was slight. It indicates that humin is a particularly important adsorbent in the subalpine meadow soil. The amount of oxytetracycline adsorbed was greatest at pH 5-9. In addition, Surface complexation through metal bridging was the most important sorption mechanism. Cu2+ and oxytetracycline formed positively-charged complex that was adsorbed and then formed a ternary complex "adsorbent-Cu(II)-oxytetracycline", in which Cu2+ acted as a bridge. These findings provide a good scientific basis for soil remediation, and for assessing environmental health risks.

RESUMO

The degradation of organic matter in soils plays an important role in the carbon cycle. Lignin is the main source of soil organics and it can be used to trace the source, distribution and turnover of organic matter. In this study the distribution and degradation of lignin were investigated to identify the source and degradation of soil organic matter during the succession of China's Zoige Plateau. Lignin monomers were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with alkaline CuO oxidation and the soils' δ13C and δ15N contents were interpreted to explore the turnover rate of lignin and organic matter. The main source of organics was identified as C3 non-woody angiosperm tissues. Lignin in the topsoil (0-30 cm) was derived from litter and roots, and it then migrated vertically to the deep soil (30-80 cm). Correlations of δ13C/δ15N with the soil's elemental composition showed that the organics degraded more quickly in meadow soil than in bog soil. The soil communities in the meadow and bog soils were generally similar, but there were certain differences in the dominant microbial phyla at different depths. The meadow soil's effectiveness as a carbon sink was gradually weakened, while that of the bog soil strengthened with depth. These results provide a scientific basis for accurately assessing the carbon sink capacity of the soils in Zoige Plateau.

RESUMO

The ionic strength of infiltration water changes with the seasonal alternation of irrigation sources. In this study, reactivity changes of birnessite-coated sand with the fluctuations of ionic strength of infiltration water (i.e. from groundwater to rainwater) and the involved mechanism were investigated through column experiments. Birnessite-coated sand was less reactive in groundwater than in rainwater because of the higher cation content and higher pH of groundwater. The cations in the groundwater were adsorbed on birnessite-coated sand and then desorbed in presence of a dilute aqueous solution represented by rainwater. The reactivity of the passivated birnessite-coated sand was recovered instantaneously, and approximately one-third of the pristine reactivity was restored. During recovery, Na+ desorption and lincomycin (LIN) removal both exhibited a two-stage reaction pattern. The LIN removal correlated with Na+ desorption (r = 0.99) so that the reactive sites that were binding 5.602 µmol of Na+ became available for 1 µmol of LIN removal. These results suggest that the reactivity of manganese oxides toward organic contaminant is associated with the ionic strength of infiltration water and indicate that the partial reactivity can be naturally restored.

RESUMO

The potential adverse impacts of antibiotic contamination on environmental quality are generating increasing concern. Given that an alarming amount and variety of antibiotics have been used in China, a list of priority antibiotics is urgently needed to develop regulatory frameworks to control antibiotic use and monitor environmental pollution. This study established a new method of ranking priority antibiotics based on their prevalence (Pv), occurrence (O), persistence, and bioaccumulation, and toxicity (PBT) in the environment. The Pv and O criteria were weighted and quantified using the decennial national screening datasets (>15,000 concentration values for 105 candidate antibiotics in eight environmental compartments), and quantitative structure-activity relationships were used to estimate PBT values. A total of 26 high priority antibiotics were identified using the PvOPBT method, including 8 quinolones, 5 sulfonamides, 5 macrolides, 4 tetracyclines, 3 from other classes, and 1 unclassified antibiotic. For individual antibiotic classes, the ß-lactams and aminoglycosides were ranked from no priority to low priority, whereas the macrolides and tetracyclines were ranked from medium to high priority. Although the PvOPBT ranking scores for the aqueous and solid phases demonstrated an apparent difference for some candidate antibiotics, eighteen antibiotics were ranked as high priority in both aqueous phases and solid phases and are suggested as the top priorities worthy of immediate attention. These top priority antibiotics are primarily utilized in animal husbandry within China. Therefore, urgent action is needed to limit the use of these top priority antibiotics in the animal industry.

RESUMO

Karst ecosystems make an important contribution to the global carbon cycle, in which carbon-fixing microorganisms play a vital role. However, the healthy functioning of karst ecosystems is threatened because pollutants easily diffuse and spread through them due to their strong hydraulic connectivity. The microbiome of a karst river contaminated with antibiotics was studied. Through co-occurrence network analysis, six ecological clusters (MOD 1-MOD 6) with different distribution characteristics were determined, of which four were significantly correlated with antibiotics. The carbon fixation pathways in different ecological clusters were varied, and the dominant hydroxypropionate-hydroxybutyrate cycle and reductive acetyl-CoA pathway were negatively and positively correlated with antibiotics, respectively. Long-term antibiotic contamination altered the selection of carbonic anhydrase (CA) encoding genes in some of the CA-producing mineralization microorganisms. The selection of different carbon fixation pathways is a possible strategy for the microbial community to compensate for the adaptation costs associated with the pressure of antibiotics contamination and emergence of antibiotics resistance. Bayesian network analysis revealed that some carbon sequestration functions (such as ß-CA and reductive acetyl-CoA pathway) surpassed certain antibiotic resistance genes in the regulation of environmental factors and microbial networks. An ecological cluster (MOD5) that possibly homologous to antibiotic contamination was the final node of the microbial community in karst river, which indicated that ecological clusters were not only selected by antibiotics, but were also regulated by multiple environmental factors in the karst river system. The carbon sequestration pathway was more directly reflected in the abundance of ecological groups than in the influence of CA. This study provides new insights into the feedback effect of karst system on typical pollutants generated from human activities.

RESUMO

The impact of antibiotics on denitrification has attracted widespread attention recently. Norfloxacin, as a representative of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, is extensively detected in groundwater. However, whether the release of norfloxacin into the groundwater poses potential risks to denitrification remains unclear. In this study, effect of norfloxacin on denitrification was investigated. The results showed that increasing norfloxacin from 0 to 100 µg/L decreased nitrate removal rate from 0.68 to 0.44 mg/L/h, but enhanced N2O emission by 177 folds. Additionally, 100 µg/L of norfloxacin decreased nitrite accumulation by 50.6%. Corresponding inhibition of norfloxacin on bacterial growth, carbon source utilization, electron transport system activity and genes expression was revealed. Furthermore, denitrifying enzyme dynamic monitoring results showed that norfloxacin inhibited nitrate reductase activity, and enhanced nitrite reductase activity to some extent in denitrification process, which was consistent with the variations of nitrate and nitrite. Meanwhile, sensitivity analysis demonstrated that nitrate reductase was more easily affected by norfloxacin than nitrite reductase. Overall, this study suggests that multiple regulation of denitrifying enzyme activity contributes to evaluating the comprehensive effects of antibiotics on groundwater denitrification.

RESUMO

The potential adverse environmental and health-related impacts of antibiotics are becoming more and more concerning. China is globally the largest antibiotic producer and consumer, possibly resulting in the ubiquity and high detection levels of antibiotics in environmental compartments. Clear status on the concentration levels and spatial distribution of antibiotic contamination in China's environment is necessary to gain insight into the establishment of legal and regulatory frameworks. This study collects information from over 170 papers reporting the occurrence and distribution of antibiotics in China's environment. A total of 110 antibiotics were detected, and 28 priority antibiotics were ubiquitous in China in almost all compartments of the environment, excluding the atmosphere. Seven dominant antibiotics in all environment compartments were identified by cluster analysis, including tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, ofloxacin, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ciprofloxacin. Meanwhile, sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine, and sulfamethazine were also frequently found in aqueous phases. Among the main basins where antibiotics were detected, the Haihe River Basin had higher median antibiotic concentrations in surface water compared to other basins, while the Huaihe River Basin had higher median concentrations in sediment. The median values of antibiotic concentrations in the sources were as follows: animal manure, 39 µg/kg (microgram per kilogram); WWTP (wastewater treatment plant) sludge, 39 µg/kg; animal wastewater, 156 ng/L (nanogram per liter); WWTP effluent: 15 ng/L. These concentrations are 1 - 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the receptors (soil, 2.1 µg/kg; sediment, 4.7 µg/kg; surface water, 8.1 ng/L; groundwater, 2.9 ng/L), whether in solid or aqueous phases. Based on the number of detected antibiotics in various environmental compartments, animal farms and WWTPs are the main sources of antibiotics, and surface water and sediment are the main receptors of antibiotics. Hierarchical clustering identified the two main pathways of antibiotic transfer in various environmental compartments, which are from animal wastewater/WWTP effluent to surface water/sediment and from animal manure/WWTP sludge to soil/groundwater.

RESUMO

Much of the world's groundwater supply has been contaminated by aromatic hydrocarbons originating from anthropogenic sources. To study the occurrence and distribution characteristics of aromatic hydrocarbons in groundwater, 24 aromatic hydrocarbon compounds were selected: Five BTEX compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene, and p-xylene), 10 alkyl-substituted benzene, and 9 halogenated aromatics. These aromatic hydrocarbons were then analyzed from 355 samples collected from across China. Results indicated that aromatic hydrocarbons were detected in 59 out of 355 samples. Of the selected aromatic hydrocarbons, BTEX compounds were detected with high frequency and at low concentrations; comparatively, halogenated aromatics were detected with low frequency and at high concentrations. The aromatic hydrocarbon characteristics found in both karst and pore groundwater samples were then determined using their respective hydrogeological conditions and corresponding human activities. In karst groundwater, BTEX compounds were the most frequently detected aromatic hydrocarbon. The high detection frequencies of aromatic hydrocarbons were caused by their rapid migration, owing to the developed conduit system in the sampled karst area. The low concentrations of aromatic hydrocarbons in karst groundwater samples were caused by low-intensity human activity along with special hydrogeological conditions with higher redox potential and the unique compositions of aromatic hydrocarbons. Alkyl-substituted aromatics and halogenated aromatics were detected at higher concentrations in pore groundwater, owing to high-intensity human activity. Aromatic hydrocarbon pollution was gradually decreased along piedmont-alluvial plain-coast line, owing to a decrease in aquifer vulnerability. These were positively correlated with the size of the aquifer's particles. Samples with a high accumulative concentration of these aromatic hydrocarbons tended to occur in pore groundwater with a high concentration of either SO42- or Cl-.

RESUMO

The performance and process of the constructed pyrite-based mixotrophic denitrification (POMD) system using pyrite and residual organic matters as the co-electron donors were investigated for simultaneous removal of N and P from secondary effluent. After the batch experiments, 61.80 ± 3.26% of phosphate and 99.99 ± 0.01% of nitrate were removed, and the obtained nitrate removal rate constant can reach 2.09 days-1 in POMD system, which was significantly superior to that reported (0.95 day-1) in pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification (PAD) system. PO43--P removal was mainly achieved via chemical precipitation as FePO4 with iron, and it was irrelevant with the initial nitrate and ammonium concentrations. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis showed the coexistence of heterotrophic and autotrophic denitrifiers in the mixotrophic environment. The denitrification process could be divided into two stages according to the carbon balance and calculation of sulfate accumulation: (a) nitrate was mainly reduced heterotrophically during 12-36 h and (b) nitrate was reduced autotrophically after 36 h. The calculated proportion of heterotrophic denitrification was 58.17 ± 3.78%, which was promoted by a higher ammonium concentration. These findings are likely to be useful in understanding the mixotrophic denitrification process and developing a cost-effective technology to simultaneously remove N and P from secondary effluent. RESUMO

Karst aquifer systems are tended to be polluted compared to other types of aquifers because pollutants are able to enter aquifers through developed conduit systems. To identify the effects of hydrogeochemical conditions on the distribution of pesticides in a karst river system in Kaiyang, southwest China, a typical pollution mode combining intermittent infiltration with intrusion was constructed. Twelve aqueous samples were collected along the karst river, and a total of 24 pesticides were detected. The results showed that the pesticide ubiquity and the dominant organophosphate (40%) and organonitrogen pesticides (49%) were both observed. Based on the spatial distribution, the attenuation of pesticides was found in the underground conduit and surface river. The wastewater treatment plant and the rural dump were the two important point sources releasing pesticides. In addition, ten core pesticides were identified by clustering analysis and regional characteristics of three types of pesticides in Songnen Plain, North China Plain, and Southwest karst areas were also summarized. With correlation analysis between pesticides and environmental factors, the significant correlations of pesticides with ammonium ion and dissolved oxygen were found, which indicated that rapid developing urbanization and long-term agricultural practices could remarkably affect the spatial distribution of pesticides. The calculation of ecological risk quotients showed that organophosphate pesticides had the highest risk to invertebrate, followed by organonitrogen pesticides, and finally organochlorine pesticides. Invertebrates were the most vulnerable aquatic organisms. These findings fill a gap in the multiple pesticides' pollution in the karst areas of China. Graphical abstract.

RESUMO

In southwestern China, karst river water is the main source of water for humans. As emerging pollutants, antibiotics have contaminated karst river water in some areas for a long time. Microbiota is highly susceptible to environmental changes, and can be used in tracing the source of antibiotics in complex systems such as karst water. Ten karst river water samples were collected along the river flow. The diversity and structure of the microbial community were analyzed together with environmental factors through correlation analysis, the random forest algorithm and co-occurrence network analysis. At genus level, Arcobacter was significantly positively correlated with the antibiotics, indicating that Arcobacter and antibiotics probably came from the same source. Based on co-occurrence network analysis between microbes, the microbial community was divided into eight modules, and the relative abundance of three modules was significantly correlated with antibiotics. The co-occurrence networks between bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) showed that pathogenic bacteria potentially carried multiple ARGs. This could increase the disease risk to humans and disease transmission in the study area. When river water flowed underground, the concentration of antibiotics decreased for the two underground river outlet sites, but abundance of bacteria and ARGs increased. Microbial source tracking studies showed that contamination was derived from humans rather than livestock. The ranking importance of prediction for antibiotics in this study area from random forest follows: specific bacteria Arcobacter > ARGs > ecological clusters. This study will be helpful in identifying the effect of antibiotics discharge on the microbial community, improving evaluation of antibiotics' risks and contaminants source tracking.

RESUMO

There have been many studies on TCE degradation by synthesized nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVIB) and commercial nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVIH), but the effect of anaerobic corrosion on the dechlorination pathways and speciation distribution of chlorine is still unclear. Compared with nZVIH, nZVIB has a faster degradation rate of TCE and formation rate of Cl-(aq) (kSA, TCE = 3.67 ±â€¯0.85 × 10-4 & 2.17 ±â€¯0.13 × 10-4 L·h-1·m-2 and kobs, Cl- = 0.344 ±â€¯0.027 & 0.166 ±â€¯0.010 µM·h-1 for nZVIB & nZVIH, respectively). Based on the characterization of XRD, XPS and TEM during the anaerobic corrosion, the corrosion of nZVIB was dramatic under the dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism; but that of nZVIH was moderate and inward by maintaining the core-shell structure and shaping slightly rough and lumpy surface. Due to the different corrosion products (FeOOH for nZVIB and Fe3O4/γ-Fe2O3 for nZVIH) and the catalysis of boron on the nZVIB surface, the preferential dechlorination pathway of TCE was not identical by hydrogenolysis (nZVIB) vs. reductive ß-elimination (nZVIH). Meanwhile, the dechlorination pathway of nZVIH was similar to that of ZVI and the reductive pathway to acetylene bypassed the formation of more toxic VC. This study shows that the high reactivity of nZVIB results in rapid corrosion with the side effect of enhanced adsorption of VC while nZVIH has a stable core-shell structure and less sorbed chlorine, which provides a new sight to access the ecological risk of nZVI due to the overlooked effect of non-identical corrosion.

RESUMO

Songnen plain is an important commodity grain base of China, and this is the first study on the comprehensive detection of multiple pesticides in groundwater. Based on an analytical method of 56 pesticides, 30 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed. At least 4 pesticides were detected in each sample and 32 out of 56 pesticides were detected. The average detected levels of individual pesticides were approximately 10-100 ng/L. Organophosphorus pesticides and carbamate pesticides were the dominant pesticides, and their percentage of total pesticide concentrations were 35.9% and 55.5%, respectively. Based on the spatial distribution, the characteristic of nonpoint source pollution was indicated in the whole study area except for a point source pollution with the influence of a sewage oxidation pond. Nine core pesticides and three distinct clusters of the core pesticides with various concentration patterns were revealed by cluster analysis. Linear regression identified a significant relationship between the cumulative detections and the cumulative concentrations, providing access to identify the outlying contaminant events that deviate substantially from the linear trend. A new insight for prediction of pesticide occurrence was provided by the Pearson correlation between some individual pesticide concentrations and the cumulative detections or the cumulative concentrations. According to health risk assessment, the residual pesticides posed medium risks for children and infants and approximately 90% of risks were composed of ß-HCH, dimethoate, ethyl-p-nitrophenyl phenylphosphonothioate and methyl parathion. RESUMO

Karst aquifers are highly susceptible to contamination because compounds in water from the land surface are able to enter aquifers directly through sinkholes and travel rapidly through conduits. To investigate the occurrence and profiles of antibiotics in the typical karst river system in Kaiyang, southwest China, 34 aqueous samples were collected periodically to delineate seasonal trends in antibiotic levels. Thirty-five antibiotics, including nine sulfonamides, four tetracyclines, five macrolides, 16 quinolones and chloramphenicol, were analysed via solid phase extraction combined with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 25 antibiotics were detected with the highest detection frequency reaching 94.1%, indicating the ubiquity of antibiotics in the study area. The total concentration of antibiotics ranged from 0.37 to 508.6 ng/L, with the dominating proportion including macrolides and quinolones based on the distribution profiles and seasonal variation. Due to the natural attenuation, the total concentration of antibiotics gradually decreased with the flow direction in the southern part of the river. The total concentrations of antibiotics in the mainstream were significantly higher in the dry season than in the rainy seasons. However, the distribution profiles were susceptible to anthropogenic activities, such as the leakage of septic tank wastewater. The dendrogram and heatmap revealed that three clusters of sample sites represented tributaries and the upstream areas, the downstream areas, and the potential pollutant source, and three clusters of antibiotics represented different concentration patterns. The high ecological risks of tetracycline, erythromycin and ciprofloxacin for algae and ofloxacin for plants were determined. These findings contributed to the establishment of a database for future monitoring and control of antibiotics in karst areas.

RESUMO

Neonatal sepsis is a major cause of death in newborns despite sophisticated neonatal intensive care. This retrospective study reviewed the clinical characteristics of cases of culture-proven sepsis in a neonatal intensive care unit from January 1992 to December 2001. Patients were divided into those with onset of sepsis in the first 7 days of life (early-onset group) and those with onset after the seventh day of life (late-onset group). A total of 270 cases with 325 episodes of sepsis and 353 isolated pathogens were identified and included in the study. The male-to-female ratio was 1.4. The majority of cases of sepsis occurred in low birth weight (75.9%) and premature babies (76.7%). Late onset occurred in 71.9% of cases. Patients with late onset had a lower mortality rate than those with early onset (11.3% vs 28.9%). Coagulase-negative staphylococci (20.1%) was the most common organism isolated, but infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa was associated with the highest morality rate (55.0%). Late-onset sepsis was significantly more common in very low birth weight and premature infants. The most frequently encountered pathogens in the early-onset group were group B streptococci (GBS) and Escherichia coli, while in the late-onset group, the organisms were coagulase-negative staphylococci and Enterobacteriaceae, including E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumannii. GBS infection resulted in the highest mortality when the onset of sepsis was within the first 24 hours of life.
