RESUMO

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients often suffer from depressive symptoms, which seriously affect cooperation in treatment and nursing. The amygdala plays a significant role in depression. This study aims to explore the microstructural alterations of the amygdala in T2DM and to investigate the relationship between the alterations and depressive symptoms. Fifty T2DM and 50 healthy controls were included. Firstly, the volumes of subcortical regions and subregions of amygdala were calculated by FreeSurfer. Covariance analysis (ANCOVA) was conducted between the two groups with covariates of age, sex, and estimated total intracranial volume to explore the differences in volume of subcortical regions and subregions of amygdala. Furthermore, the structural covariance within the amygdala subregions was performed. Moreover, we investigate the correlation between depressive symptoms and the volume of subcortical regions and amygdala subregions in T2DM. We observed a reduction in the volume of the bilateral cortico-amygdaloid transition area, left basal nucleus, bilateral accessory basal nucleus, left anterior amygdaloid area of amygdala, the left thalamus and left hippocampus in T2DM. T2DM patients showed decreased structural covariance connectivity between left paralaminar nucleus and the right central nucleus. Moreover, there was a negative correlation between self-rating depression scale scores and the volume of the bilateral cortico-amygdaloid transition area in T2DM. This study reveals extensive structural alterations in the amygdala subregions of T2DM patients. The reduction in the volume of the bilateral cortico-amygdaloid transition area may be a promising imaging marker for early recognition of depressive symptoms in T2DM.

An increasing number of recent brain imaging studies are dedicated to understanding the neuro mechanism of cognitive impairment in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) individuals. In contrast to efforts to date that are limited to static functional connectivity, here we investigate abnormal connectivity in T2DM individuals by characterizing the time-varying properties of brain functional networks. Using group independent component analysis (GICA), sliding-window analysis, and k-means clustering, we extracted thirty-one intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs) and estimated four recurring brain states. We observed significant group differences in fraction time (FT) and mean dwell time (MDT), and significant negative correlation between the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores and FT/MDT. We found that in the T2DM group the inter- and intra-network connectivity decreases and increases respectively for the default mode network (DMN) and task-positive network (TPN). We also found alteration in the precuneus network (PCUN) and enhanced connectivity between the salience network (SN) and the TPN. Our study provides evidence of alterations of large-scale resting networks in T2DM individuals and shed light on the fundamental mechanisms of neurocognitive deficits in T2DM.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is closely linked to cognitive decline and alterations in brain structure and function. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) is used to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases, such as cognitive impairment (CI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VaD). However, whether the functional connectivity (FC) of patients with T2DM and mild cognitive impairment (T2DM-MCI) is conducive to early diagnosis remains unclear. To answer this question, we analyzed the rs-fMRI data of 37 patients with T2DM and mild cognitive impairment (T2DM-MCI), 93 patients with T2DM but no cognitive impairment (T2DM-NCI), and 69 normal controls (NC). We achieved an accuracy of 87.91% in T2DM-MCI versus T2DM-NCI classification and 80% in T2DM-NCI versus NC classification using the XGBoost model. The thalamus, angular, caudate nucleus, and paracentral lobule contributed most to the classification outcome. Our findings provide valuable knowledge to classify and predict T2DM-related CI, can help with early clinical diagnosis of T2DM-MCI, and provide a basis for future studies.

PURPOSE: The white matter (WM) of the brain of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients is susceptible to neurodegenerative processes, but the specific types and positions of microstructural lesions along the fiber tracts remain unclear. METHODS: In this study 61 T2DM patients and 61 healthy controls were recruited and underwent diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI). The results were reconstructed with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI). WM microstructural abnormalities were identified using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). Pointwise WM tract differences were detected through automatic fiber quantification (AFQ). The relationships between WM tract abnormalities and clinical characteristics were explored with partial correlation analysis. RESULTS: TBSS revealed widespread WM lesions in T2DM patients with decreased fractional anisotropy and axial diffusivity and an increased orientation dispersion index (ODI). The AFQ results showed microstructural abnormalities in T2DM patients in specific portions of the right superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), right arcuate fasciculus (ARC), left anterior thalamic radiation (ATR), and forceps major (FMA). In the right ARC of T2DM patients, an aberrant ODI was positively correlated with fasting insulin and insulin resistance, and an abnormal intracellular volume fraction was negatively correlated with fasting blood glucose. Additionally, negative associations were found between blood pressure and microstructural abnormalities in the right ARC, left ATR, and FMA in T2DM patients. CONCLUSION: Using AFQ, together with DTI and NODDI, various kinds of microstructural alterations in the right SLF, right ARC, left ATR, and FMA can be accurately identified and may be associated with insulin and glucose status and blood pressure in T2DM patients.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the changes in brain structure and function in middle-aged patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using morphometry and blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD-fMRI). Methods: A total of 44 middle-aged patients with T2DM and 45 matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Surface-based morphometry (SBM) was used to evaluate the changes in brain morphology. Degree centrality (DC) and functional connectivity (FC) were used to evaluate the changes in brain function. Results: Compared with HCs, middle-aged patients with T2DM exhibited cortical thickness reductions in the left pars opercularis, left transverse temporal, and right superior temporal gyri. Decreased DC values were observed in the cuneus and precuneus in T2DM. Hub-based FC analysis of these regions revealed lower connectivity in the bilateral hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus, left precuneus, as well as left frontal sup. Conclusion: Cortical thickness, degree centrality, as well as functional connectivity were found to have significant changes in middle-aged patients with T2DM. Our observations provide potential evidence from neuroimaging for analysis to examine diabetes-related brain damage.

BACKGROUND: Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is an extremely rare tumor with nonspecific clinical manifestations, which is extremely difficult to diagnose. Herein, we reported a case of MPM in the abdominal cavity with massive short-term ascites as the first symptom. CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old woman presented to the hospital with abdominal pain, distention, and shortness of breath that persisted for 15 d. The serum CA-125 level was 1075 U/mL. The abdominal computed tomography showed massive ascites and no obvious tumor lesions. The pathological examination of the ascitic fluid showed numerous heterotypic cells with some papillary structures. The immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization showed the deletion of CDX2 (-), WT-1 (-), Ki-67 (about 10% +), CEA (-), Glut-1 (+++), desmin (-), PD-L1 (-), and CDKN2A (P16). The final diagnosis was MPM. The patient refused tumor cytoreductive surgery and received two cycles of cisplatin plus pemetrexed bidirectional chemotherapy. In the second cycle, she received an additional cycle of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy due to massive recalcitrant ascites. She died of disease progression 2 mo after diagnosis. CONCLUSION: In case of massive unexplained ascites, the possibility of MPM should not be excluded to avoid misdiagnosis and delay in treatment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neurodegenerative processes are widespread in the brains of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients; gaps remain to exist in the current knowledge of the associated gray matter (GM) microstructural alterations. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate alterations in GM microarchitecture in T2DM patients by diffusion tensor imaging and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI). Seventy-eight T2DM patients and seventy-four age-, sex-, and education level-matched healthy controls (HCs) without cognitive impairment were recruited. Cortical macrostructure and GM microstructure were assessed by surface-based analysis and GM-based spatial statistics (GBSS), respectively. Machine learning models were trained to evaluate the diagnostic values of cortical intracellular volume fraction (ICVF) for the classification of T2DM versus HCs. RESULTS: There were no differences in cortical thickness or area between the groups. GBSS analysis revealed similar GM microstructural patterns of significantly decreased fractional anisotropy, increased mean diffusivity and radial diffusivity in T2DM patients involving the frontal and parietal lobes, and significantly lower ICVF values were observed in nearly all brain regions of T2DM patients. A support vector machine model with a linear kernel was trained to realize the T2DM versus HC classification and exhibited the highest performance among the trained models, achieving an accuracy of 74% and an area under the curve of 83%. CONCLUSIONS: NODDI may help to probe the widespread GM neuritic density loss in T2DM patients occurs before measurable macrostructural alterations. The cortical ICVF values may provide valuable diagnostic information regarding the early GM microstructural alterations in T2DM.

Purpose: Stomach 36 (ST36, zusanli) is one of the important acupoints in acupuncture. Despite clinical functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of ST36 acupuncture, the brain activities and the neural mechanism following acupuncture at ST36 remain unclear. Methods: Literature searches were conducted on online databases, including MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang database, WeiPu database, and China Biology Medicine, for task-based fMRI studies of acupuncture at ST36 in healthy subjects. Brain regions activated by ST36 acupuncture were systematically evaluated and subjected to seed-based d mapping meta-analysis. Subgroup analysis was conducted on control procedures, manual acupuncture, electrical acupuncture (EA), and acupuncture-specific activations. Meta-regression analysis was performed to explore the effects of needle retention time on brain activities following ST36 acupuncture stimulation. The activated brain regions were further decoded and mapped on large-scale functional networks to further decipher the clinical relevance of acupuncturing at ST36. Results: A total of sixteen studies, involving a total of 401 right-handed healthy participants, that satisfied the inclusion criteria were included in the present meta-analysis. Meta-analysis showed that acupuncturing on ST36 positively activates the opercular part of the right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG.R), left superior temporal gyrus (STG.L), and right median cingulate/paracingulate gyri (MCG.R) regions. Needle retention time in an acupuncture session positively correlates with the activation of the left olfactory cortex, as shown in meta-regression analysis. Subgroup analysis revealed that EA stimulation may be a source of heterogeneity in the pooled results. Functional network mappings showed that the activated areas were mapped to the auditory network and salience network. Further functional decoding analysis showed that acupuncture on ST36 was associated with pain, secondary somatosensory, sound and language processing, and mood regulation. Conclusion: Acupuncture at ST36 in healthy individuals positively activates the opercular part of IFG.R, STG.L, and MCG.R. The left olfactory cortex may exhibit positive needle retention time-dependent activities. Our findings may have clinical implications for acupuncture in analgesia, language processing, and mood disorders. Systematic Review Registration: https://inplasy.com/inplasy-2021-12-0035.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease mediated by autoreactive T cells and dominated by Th1 response polarization. Insulin replacement therapy faces great challenges to this autoimmune disease, requiring highly frequent daily administration. Intriguingly, the progression of T1DM has proven to be prevented or attenuated by helminth infection or worm antigens for a relatively long term. However, the inevitable problems of low safety and poor compliance arise from infection with live worms or direct injection of antigens. Microneedles would be a promising candidate for local delivery of intact antigens, thus providing an opportunity for the clinical immunotherapy of parasitic products. METHODS: We developed a Schistosoma japonicum-egg tip-loaded asymmetric microneedle patch (STAMP) system, which serves as a new strategy to combat TIDM. In order to improve retention time and reduce contamination risk, a specific imperfection was introduced on the STAMP (asymmetric structure), which allows the tip to quickly separate from the base layer, improving reaction time and patient's comfort. After loading Schistosoma japonicum-egg as the immune regulator, the effects of STAMP on blood glucose control and pancreatic pathological progression improvement were evaluated in vivo. Meanwhile, the immunoregulatory mechanism and biosafety of STAMP were confirmed by histopathology, qRT-PCR, ELISA and Flow cytometric analysis. RESULTS: Here, the newly developed STAMP was able to significantly reduce blood glucose and attenuate the pancreatic injury in T1DM mice independent of the adjuvants. The isolated Schistosoma japonicum-eggs micron slowly degraded in the skin and continuously released egg antigen for at least 2 weeks, ensuring localization and safety of antigen stimulation. This phenomenon should be attributed to the shift of Th2 immune response to reduce Th1 polarization. CONCLUSION: Our results exhibited that STAMP could significantly regulate the blood glucose level and attenuate pancreatic pathological injury in T1DM mice by balancing the Th1/Th2 immune responses, which is independent of adjuvants. This technology opens a new window for the application of parasite products in clinical immunotherapy.

Purpose: Cognitive impairment is generally found in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although they may not have visible symptoms of cognitive impairment in the early stages of the disorder, they are considered to be at high risk. Therefore, the classification of these patients is important for preventing the progression of cognitive impairment. Methods: In this study, a convolutional neural network was used to construct a model for classifying 107 T2DM patients with and without cognitive impairment based on T1-weighted structural MRI. The Montreal cognitive assessment score served as an index of the cognitive status of the patients. Results: The classifier could identify T2DM-related cognitive decline with a classification accuracy of 84.85% and achieved an area under the curve of 92.65%. Conclusions: The model can help clinicians analyze and predict cognitive impairment in patients and enable early treatment.

In epidemiological studies, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been associated with cognitive impairment and dementia, but studies about functional network connectivity in T2DM without cognitive impairment are limited. This study aimed to explore network connectivity alterations that may help enhance our understanding of damage-associated processes in T2DM. MRI data were analyzed from 82 patients with T2DM and 66 normal controls. Clinical, biochemical, and neuropsychological assessments were conducted in parallel with resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, and the cognitive status of the patients was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment-B (MoCA-B) score. Independent component analysis revealed a positive correlation between the salience network and the visual network and a negative connection between the left executive control network and the default mode network in patients with T2DM. The differences in dynamic brain network connectivity were observed in the precuneus, visual, and executive control networks. Internal network connectivity was primarily affected in the thalamus, inferior parietal lobe, and left precuneus. Hemoglobin A1c level, body mass index, MoCA-B score, and grooved pegboard (R) assessments indicated significant differences between the two groups (p < 0.05). Our findings show that key changes in functional connectivity in diabetes occur in the precuneus and executive control networks that evolve before patients develop cognitive deficits. In addition, the current study provides useful information about the role of the thalamus, inferior parietal lobe, and precuneus, which might be potential biomarkers for predicting the clinical progression, assessing the cognitive function, and further understanding the neuropathology of T2DM.

Nuanxinkang tablet (NXK), a Chinese herbal formula, can improve heart function and quality of life in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). However, the mechanisms of action of NXK are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of NXK on inflammation in the CHF mouse model. This model was established by transverse aortic constriction (TAC) and treated with NXK for 8 weeks. Then, the cardiac function and myocardial fibrosis were evaluated. The monocytes/macrophages were evaluated by immunofluorescence. The mRNA levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 were measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), while TLR4, MyD88, NF-κB p65, P-IκBα, TLR2, TLR7 and TLR9 protein levels were evaluated by Western blot. The results showed that NXK improved the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left ventricular end-systolic dimension, reversed myocardial fibrosis, and inhibited pro-inflammatory (CD11b + Ly6C+) monocytes/macrophages in the TAC mouse model. NXK also reduced the mRNA and protein levels of the above markers. Taken together, NXK improved heart function and reduced inflammation through the TLR-mediated NF-κB signaling pathway, suggesting that it might be used as an innovative treatment strategy for CHF.

Purpose: Acupuncture and moxibustion techniques have been increasingly used to treat peripheral neuropathic pain (PNP). However, there is a paucity of comparative information and cost-effectiveness assessment for techniques on PNP management. Patients and Methods. Randomized controlled trials studying the acupuncture or moxibustion treatments on PNP were identified from electronic databases. The quality of the included studies and the potential risk of bias was evaluated using the ROB 2.0 assessment tool. The primary outcome was at least 20% pain relief. The treatment effects were pooled through a frequentist-based network meta approach. Subsequently, the cost-effectiveness measured by incremental cost per additional responder (ICPR) was calculated. Results: One three-arm trial and 15 two-arm trials comprising 1308 participants that satisfy the eligibility criteria were identified. Among the included studies, 12.5% were at low risk of bias, 68.75% had some concerns about the risk of bias, and 18.75% were at high risk of bias. The major sources of bias originated from the randomization processes of the studies. The patients were assigned to seven different acupuncture or moxibustion interventions and two pharmaceutical treatments. Except for acupoint injection, all the included acupuncture and moxibustion techniques showed superior improvements in PNP and were more cost-effective as compared to pharmaceutical treatments. Warm needling, fire needling, and moxibustion were the most effective treatments. Fire needling showed the lowest ICPR relative to the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the cost-effectiveness analysis of direct and indirect costs. Conclusion: Acupuncture and moxibustion techniques are beneficial and cost-effective approaches for easing PNP and hence can be considered for PNP management.

Objective: Cognitive impairment in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients is related to changes in hippocampal structure and function. However, the alternation of hippocampal subfields volumes and their relationship with cognitive function are unclear. This study explored morphological alterations in the hippocampus and its subfields in T2DM patients and their relationship with cognitive function. Methods: Thirty T2DM patients and 20 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited and underwent 3-dimensional, high-resolution T1-weighted sequence (3D-T1) and a battery of cognitive tests. Freesurfer 6.0 was performed to segment the hippocampus into 12 subregions automatically. Then relationships between hippocampal subfield volumes and neurocognitive scale scores in the T2DM group were evaluated. Results: Immediate memory scores on the auditory verbal learning test (AVLT) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores in T2DM patients were lower than in the HCs. T2DM patients showed that volumes of the bilateral hippocampus were significantly reduced, mainly in the bilateral molecular layer, granule cell and molecular layer of the dentate gyrus (GC-ML-DG), cornu ammonis 4 (CA4), fimbria, and left subiculum and the right hippocampus amygdala transition area (HATA) compared to HCs. In addition, T2DM patients showed the FINS was negatively correlated with volume of left GC-ML-DG (r = -0.415, P = 0.035) and left CA4 (r = -0.489, P = 0.011); the FBG was negatively correlated with volume of right fimbria (r = -0.460, P = 0.018); the HOMA-IR was negatively correlated with volume of left GC-ML-DG (r = -0.367, P = 0.046) and left CA4(r = 0.462, P = 0.010). Partial correlation analysis found that the volume of right HATA in T2DM group was positively correlated with AVLT (immediate) scores (r = 0.427, P = 0.03). Conclusion: This study showed the volumes of multiple hippocampal subfields decreased and they were correlated with FINS, FBG and HOMA-IR in T2DM patients. We hypothesized that decreased hippocampal subfields volumes in T2DM patients was related to insulin resistance and impaired vascular function. In addition, we also found that abnormal hippocampal subfields volumes were related to memory function in T2DM patients, suggesting that reduced volumes in specific hippocampal subfields may be the potential mechanism of memory dysfunction in these patients.

Diabetes with high blood glucose levels may damage the brain nerves and thus increase the risk of dementia. Previous studies have shown that dementia can be reflected in altered brain structure, facilitating computer-aided diagnosis of brain diseases based on structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)-mediated changes in the brain structures have not yet been studied, and only a few studies have focused on the use of brain MRI for automated diagnosis of T2DM. Hence, identifying MRI biomarkers is essential to evaluate the association between changes in brain structure and T2DM as well as cognitive impairment (CI). The present study aims to investigate four methods to extract features from MRI, characterize imaging biomarkers, as well as identify subjects with T2DM and CI.

BACKGROUND: Congenital coronary artery fistula can lead to symptoms of chest tightness, chest pain, or exertional dyspnea, which is a congenital vascular malformation that should not be ignored. Patients who have such malformations are frequently observed with different concurrent abnormal anatomic structures. Collateral circulation may have a positive effect on improving the patients' symptoms. CASE SUMMARY: A 53-year-old female experienced episodic chest discomfort for the past month with symptoms manifesting when she was agitated or overexerted. After a positive treadmill test, the patient underwent coronary angiography. "Ghostlike" intermittent appearance of coronary ventricular fistula and collateral branching were observed. The patient was diagnosed with a right coronary ventricular fistula and collateral circulation. CONCLUSION: This case shows the likelihood of collateral circulation in patients with coronary artery fistula. This may provide medical staff with novel solutions to treat insufficiency of myocardial blood supply induced by cardiovascular malformations.

Objective: We aimed to explore whether the percent amplitude of fluctuation (PerAF) measurement could provide supplementary information for amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) about spontaneous activity alteration in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) subjects without mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Then we further evaluated the synchronization through the method of functional connectivity (FC) to better demonstrate brain changes in a more comprehensive manner in T2DM. Methods: Thirty T2DM subjects without MCI and thirty well-matched healthy subjects were recruited in this study. Subjects' clinical data, neuropsychological test results, and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data were acquired. Voxel-based group difference comparisons between PerAF and ALFF were conducted. Then, seed-based FC between the recognized brain regions based on PerAF and ALFF and the rest of the whole brain was performed. Results: Compared with healthy group, T2DM group had significantly decreased PerAF in the bilateral middle occipital gyrus and the right calcarine, increased ALFF in the right orbital inferior frontal gyrus and decreased ALFF in the right calcarine. Seed-based FC analysis showed that the right middle occipital gyrus of T2DM subjects exhibited significantly decreased FC with the right caudate nucleus and right putamen. According to the partial correlation analyses, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and immediate memory scores on the auditory verbal learning test (AVLT) were negatively correlated in the T2DM group. However, we found that total cholesterol was positively correlated with symbol digit test (SDT) scores. Conclusion: PerAF and ALFF may have different sensitivities in detecting the abnormal spontaneous brain activity in T2DM subjects. We suggest PerAF values may add supplementary information and indicate additional potential neuronal spontaneous activity in T2DM subjects without MCI, which may provide new insights into the neuroimaging mechanisms underlying early diabetes-associated cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a common muscular disorder. At present, treatments for FSHD have limited effects on the muscle function of patients. A famous Chinese medicine formula, Buzhong Yiqi (BZYQ), has shown promising effects on several muscular diseases, but evidence regarding its effect on FSHD is lacking. This study aimed to examine the effect of BZYQ on FSHD. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old girl suffered from progressive muscle weakness, with a genetically confirmed diagnosis of FSHD. Except for routine FSHD management, the patient received BZQY every day. The muscle strength of the patient remarkably increased after discharge. CONCLUSIONS: This study was novel in reporting a significant improvement in muscle function in a patient with FSHD treated with an integrated approach of BZYQ and routine management. Therefore, BZYQ might be a potential treatment for FSHD, requiring further investigations.

BACKGROUND: Orang-utans comprise three critically endangered species endemic to the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Though whole-genome sequencing has recently accelerated our understanding of their evolutionary history, the costs of implementing routine genome screening and diagnostics remain prohibitive. Capitalizing on a tri-fold locus discovery approach, combining data from published whole-genome sequences, novel whole-exome sequencing, and microarray-derived genotype data, we aimed to develop a highly informative gene-focused panel of targets that can be used to address a broad range of research questions. RESULTS: We identified and present genomic co-ordinates for 175,186 SNPs and 2315 Y-chromosomal targets, plus 185 genes either known or presumed to be pathogenic in cardiovascular (N = 109) or respiratory (N = 43) diseases in humans - the primary and secondary causes of captive orang-utan mortality - or a majority of other human diseases (N = 33). As proof of concept, we designed and synthesized 'SeqCap' hybrid capture probes for these targets, demonstrating cost-effective target enrichment and reduced-representation sequencing. CONCLUSIONS: Our targets are of broad utility in studies of orang-utan ancestry, admixture and disease susceptibility and aetiology, and thus are of value in addressing questions key to the survival of these species. To facilitate comparative analyses, these targets could now be standardized for future orang-utan population genomic studies. The targets are broadly compatible with commercial target enrichment platforms and can be utilized as published here to synthesize applicable probes.

BACKGROUND: There are currently no FDA-approved biological or chemical drugs for the treatment of HBV-related liver fibrosis or cirrhosis. Some Chinese patent medicines have proven to be effective in this area. OBJECTIVE: The network meta-analysis (NMA) is to evaluate whether entecavir combined with Chinese patent medicine, such as "fuzhenghuayu capsules," "anluohuaxian pills," "fufangbiejiaruangan tablets," shows superior efficiency compared with entecavir alone for the treatment of chronic HBV-related liver fibrosis or cirrhosis. To evaluate which Chinese patent medicine is the most effective at improving liver fibrosis or cirrhosis in chronic hepatitis B-infected patients? METHODS: Registration of protocol: the protocol was published in the PROSPERO database (identification number: CRD42018112547). We will search PubMed, EMbase, Medline, Cochrane, China Network Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or "prospective cohort studies" of "fuzhenghuayu capsules," "anluohuaxian pills," "fufangbiejiaruangan tablets" respectively combined with entecavir in the treatment of chronic HBV-related liver fibrosis or cirrhosis from their inception to September 30, 2018. R 3.3.3 and GeMTC 0.14.3 software will be used for data analysis.
