Patients with newly diagnosed hematological malignancies often present with a considerable cellular burden, leading to complications including hyperkalemia. However, pseudohyperkalemia, arising from in vitro cell lysis, can pose challenges in clinical practice. Although pseudohyperkalemia is frequently reported in adult hematological malignancies, its occurrence in pediatric patients is underreported, and its incidence in this demographic remains unclear. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of pediatric patients who received a new diagnosis of hematological malignancies from 2011 to 2022 at Taichung Veterans General Hospital. Hyperkalemia was defined by a serum or plasma potassium level exceeding 5.5 mEq/L. Pseudohyperkalemia was defined by 1) a potassium decrease of over 1 mEq/L in within 4 h without intervention or 2) the absence of electrocardiography changes indicative of hyperkalemia. Cases with apparent red blood cell hemolysis were excluded. A total of 157 pediatric patients with a new diagnosis of hematological malignancies were included, 14 of whom exhibited hyperkalemia. Among these 14 cases, 7 cases (4.5%) were of pseudohyperkalemia. This rate increased to 21.2% in patients with initial hyperleukocytosis. Pseudohyperkalemia was associated with a higher initial white blood cell count and lower serum sodium level. All episodes of pseudohyperkalemia occurred in the pediatric emergency department, where samples were obtained as plasma, whereas all true hyperkalemia cases were observed in the ordinary ward or intensive care unit, where samples were obtained as serum. Timely recognition of pseudohyperkalemia is crucial to avoiding unnecessary potassium-lowering interventions in pediatric patients with newly diagnosed hematological malignancies.

Introduction: Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder with clinical features of retinal dystrophy, obesity, postaxial polydactyly, renal anomalies, learning disabilities, hypogonadism, and genitourinary abnormalities. Nevertheless, previous studies on the phenotypic traits of BBS heterozygous carriers have generated inconclusive results. The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of BBS heterozygosity on carriers when compared to non-carriers within the Taiwanese population. Materials and Methods: This study follows a hospital-based case-control design. We employed the Taiwan Biobank version 2 (TWBv2) array to identify three specific loci associated with BBS (rs773862084, rs567573386, and rs199910690). In total, 716 patients were included in the case group, and they were compared to a control group of 2,864 patients who lacked BBS alleles. The control group was selected through gender and age matching at a ratio of 1:4. The association between BBS-related loci and comorbidity was assessed using logistic regression models. Results: We found that BBS heterozygous carriers exhibited a significant association with elevated BMI levels, especially the variant rs199910690 in MKS1 (p=0.0037). The prevalence of comorbidities in the carriers' group was not higher than that in the non-carriers' group. Besides, the average values of the biochemistry data showed no significant differences, except for creatinine level. Furthermore, we conducted a BMI-based analysis to identify specific risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our findings revealed that individuals carrying the CA/AA genotype of the BBS2 rs773862084 variant or the CT/TT genotype of the MKS1 rs199910690 variant showed a reduced risk of developing CKD, irrespective of their BMI levels. When stratified by BMI level, obese males with the MKS1 rs199910690 variant and obese females with the BBS2 rs773862084 variant exhibited a negative association with CKD development. Conclusion: We found that aside from the association with overweight and obesity, heterozygous BBS mutations did not appear to increase the predisposition of individuals to comorbidities and metabolic diseases. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the genetic susceptibility associated with Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS), further research is warranted.

Activity recognition is one of the significant technologies accompanying the development of the Internet of Things (IoT). It can help in recording daily life activities or reporting emergencies, thus improving the user's quality of life and safety, and even easing the workload of caregivers. This study proposes a human activity recognition (HAR) system based on activity data obtained via the micro-Doppler effect, combining a two-stream one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) with a bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU). Initially, radar sensor data are used to generate information related to time and frequency responses using short-time Fourier transform (STFT). Subsequently, the magnitudes and phase values are calculated and fed into the 1D-CNN and Bi-GRU models to extract spatial and temporal features for subsequent model training and activity recognition. Additionally, we propose a simple cross-channel operation (CCO) to facilitate the exchange of magnitude and phase features between parallel convolutional layers. An open dataset collected through radar, named Rad-HAR, is employed for model training and performance evaluation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed 1D-CNN+CCO-BiGRU model demonstrated superior performance, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 98.2%. This outperformance of existing systems with the radar sensor underscores the proposed model's potential applicability in real-world scenarios, marking a significant advancement in the field of HAR within the IoT framework.

Biliary tract infection (BTI), a commonly occurring abdominal disease, despite being extensively studied for its initiation and underlying mechanisms, continues to pose a challenge in the quest for identifying specific diagnostic biomarkers. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), which emanate from diverse cell types, serve as minute biological entities that mirror unique physiological or pathological conditions. Despite their potential, there has been a relatively restricted exploration of EV-oriented methodologies for diagnosing BTI. To uncover potent protein biomarkers for BTI patients, we applied a label-free quantitative proteomic method known for its unbiased and high-throughput nature. Furthermore, 192 differentially expressed proteins surfaced within EVs isolated from individuals afflicted with BTI. Subsequent GO and KEGG analyses pinpointed Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1) and Crumbs homolog 3 (CRB3) as noteworthy biomarkers. Validation via data analysis of plasma-derived EV samples confirmed their specificity to BTI. Our study leveraged an unbiased proteomic tool to unveil CEACAM1 and CRB3 as promising protein biomarkers in serum EVs, presenting potential avenues for the advancement of diagnostic systems for BTI detection.

Human genetic studies indicate that suicidal ideation and behavior are both heritable. Most studies have examined associations between aberrant gene expression and suicide behavior, but behavior risk is linked to the severity of suicidal ideation. Through a gene network approach, this study investigates how gene co-expression patterns are associated with suicidal ideation and severity using RNA-seq data in peripheral blood from 46 live participants with elevated suicidal ideation and 46 with no ideation. Associations with the presence of suicidal ideation were found within 18 co-expressed modules (p < 0.05), as well as in 3 co-expressed modules associated with suicidal ideation severity (p < 0.05, not explained by severity of depression). Suicidal ideation presence and severity-related gene modules with enrichment of genes involved in defense against microbial infection, inflammation, and adaptive immune response were identified and investigated using RNA-seq data from postmortem brain that revealed gene expression differences with moderate effect sizes in suicide decedents vs. non-suicides in white matter, but not gray matter. Findings support a role of brain and peripheral blood inflammation in suicide risk, showing that suicidal ideation presence and severity are associated with an inflammatory signature detectable in blood and brain, indicating a biological continuity between ideation and suicidal behavior that may underlie a common heritability.

ABSTRACT: In case of excision of nasal basal cell carcinoma (BCC), bilobed flaps are considered the criterion standard of reconstruction for defect less than 15 mm in size. However, there is still a risk of trapdoor deformity formation, of which its treatment is less discussed. A 44-year-old woman who was diagnosed with nasal BCC and underwent tumor excision with bilobed flap reconstruction presented with trapdoor deformity postoperatively. The computed Vancouver Scar Scale was 7. After early intervention of multiple laser modalities, including 2 sessions of 585-nm pulsed dye laser with a fluence of 9 J/cm2, pulse duration of 6 milliseconds, and spot size of 6 mm, 2940-nm Er-yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) laser with a pulse energy of 800-900 mJ, repetition rate of 8-9 Hz, and laser spot size of 3-7 mm, and 5 sessions of 1064-nm Nd:YAG fractional picosecond laser with a pulse energy of 2.30-2.70 mJ, repetition rate of 8 Hz, and laser spot size of 6 mm from 5 to 23 weeks postoperatively, the Vancouver Scar Scale score improved to 1, with significant reduction of trapdoor scar erythema and puffiness. Although BCC is often curable, tumor excision causes unsatisfactory appearance satisfaction problem, owing to the apparent location of the lesion. Factors, such as sebaceous tissue thickness, reconstruction over multiple aesthetic subunits of nose, and damage to nasal cartilage framework structure during tumor removal, may increase the risk of trapdoor formation. Early intervention with multiple laser treatment can significantly revise the deformity.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Chromoendoscopy with the use of indigo carmine (IC) dye is a crucial endoscopic technique to identify gastrointestinal neoplasms. However, its performance is limited by the endoscopist's skill, and no standards are available for lesion identification. Thus, we developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model to replace chromoendoscopy. METHODS: This pilot study assessed the feasibility of our novel AI model in the conversion of white-light images (WLI) into virtual IC-dyed images based on a generative adversarial network. The predictions of our AI model were evaluated against the assessments of five endoscopic experts who were blinded to the purpose of this study with a staining quality rating from 1 (unacceptable) to 4 (excellent). RESULTS: The AI model successfully transformed the WLI of polyps with different morphologies and different types of lesions in the gastrointestinal tract into virtual IC-dyed images. The quality ratings of the real IC-dyed and AI images did not significantly differ concerning surface structure (AI vs IC: 3.08 vs 3.00), lesion border (3.04 vs 2.98), and overall contrast (3.14 vs 3.02) from 10 sets of images (10 AI images and 10 real IC-dyed images). Although the score depended significantly on the evaluator, the staining methods (AI or real IC) and evaluators had no significant interaction (P > 0.05) with each other. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrated the feasibility of employing AI model's virtual IC staining, increasing the possibility of being employed in daily practice. This novel technology may facilitate gastrointestinal lesion identification in the future.

BACKGROUND: Pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α are elevated in response to psychosocial stress; however, less is known about other inflammatory markers. METHODS: We explored response to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) of 16 cytokines and growth factors in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD, n = 12) vs. healthy volunteers (HV, n = 16). Outcomes were baseline and post-stress levels estimated by area under the curve (AUCi) and peak change over 3 timepoints. We also explored correlations between biomarkers and clinical characteristics. RESULTS: Baseline concentrations were higher in MDD for platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-AB/BB (p = 0.037, d = 0.70), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF, p = 0.033, d = 0.52), and IL-8 (p = 0.046, d = 0.74). After TSST, AUCi was higher in MDD for GM-CSF (p = 0.003, d = 1.21), IL-5 (p = 0.014, d = 1.62), and IL-27 (p = 0.041, d = 0.74). In MDD, depression severity correlated positively with soluble CD40L (sCD40L) for AUCi (Spearman's ρ = 0.76, p = 0.004) and with baseline vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA, r = 0.85, p < 0.001), but negatively with baseline monokine induced by gamma interferon (MIG, aka CXCL9; r = -0.77, p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Effect sizes were robust in this exploratory study, although interpretation of the results must be cautious, given small sample size and multiple comparisons. Differential study of stress-induced biomarkers may have important ramifications for MDD treatment.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is one of the deadliest cancers regarding both mortality rate and number of deaths and warrants greater effort in the development of potential therapeutic targets. The enhancer of rudimentary homolog (ERH) has been implicated in the promotion and progression of certain types of cancer. In the present study, ERH was assessed for its expression pattern and survival association with LUAD in public transcriptomic and proteomic databases. Bioinformatic methods and data from websites, including University of Alabama at Birmingham CANcer data analysis Portal and The Cancer Genome Atlas, were utilized to demonstrate the functional behaviors and corresponding pathways of ERH in LUAD. Human A549 and CL1­0 cell lines were used to validate the findings via functional assays. It was demonstrated that the expression of ERH, at both the transcriptomic and proteomic levels, was higher in LUAD compared with in adjacent non­tumor lung tissue and was associated with worse survival prognosis. Moreover, high ERH expression was correlated with more aggressive functional states, such as cell cycle and invasion in LUAD, and the positive ERH­correlated gene set was associated with worse survival and an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Small nuclear ribonucleoprotein polypeptide G was identified as a molecule that potentially interacted with ERH. Lastly, it was demonstrated that ERH promoted epithelial­mesenchymal transition and cell migration in vitro, but not proliferation. In conclusion, higher expression of ERH in LUAD may facilitate cancer progression and confer worse outcomes. Further deep investigation into the role of ERH in LUAD is needed.

RESUMO

Electroencephalographic (EEG) data is considered contaminated with various types of artifacts. Deep learning has been successfully applied to developing EEG artifact removal techniques to increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and enhance brain-computer interface performance. Recently, our research team has proposed an end-to-end UNet-based EEG artifact removal technique, IC-U-Net, which can reconstruct signals against various artifacts. However, this model suffers from being prone to overfitting with a limited training dataset size and demanding a high computational cost. To address these issues, this study attempted to leverage the architecture of UNet++ to improve the practicability of IC-U-Net by introducing dense skip connections in the encoder-decoder architecture. Results showed that this proposed model obtained superior SNR to the original model with half the number of parameters. Also, this proposed model achieved comparable convergency using a quarter of the training data size.

Early detection of prostate cancer (PCa) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is crucial for maintaining the health and well-being of aging male populations. This study aims to evaluate the performance of transfer learning with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for efficient classification of PCa and BPH in transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images. A retrospective experimental design was employed in this study, with 1380 TRUS images for PCa and 1530 for BPH. Seven state-of-the-art deep learning (DL) methods were employed as classifiers with transfer learning applied to popular CNN architectures. Performance indices, including sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), Kappa value, and Hindex (Youden's index), were used to assess the feasibility and efficacy of the CNN methods. The CNN methods with transfer learning demonstrated a high classification performance for TRUS images, with all accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, PPV, NPV, Kappa, and Hindex values surpassing 0.9400. The optimal accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity reached 0.9987, 0.9980, and 0.9980, respectively, as evaluated using twofold cross-validation. The investigated CNN methods with transfer learning showcased their efficiency and ability for the classification of PCa and BPH in TRUS images. Notably, the EfficientNetV2 with transfer learning displayed a high degree of effectiveness in distinguishing between PCa and BPH, making it a promising tool for future diagnostic applications.

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization has been used in various applications such as preparing nanoparticles, stimulus-responsive polymers, and hydrogels. In this study, the combination of this polymerization method and Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition click chemistry was used to prepare the multifunctional glyco-diblock copolymer P(PEG-co-AM)-b-PF, which is composed of mannosides for cell targeting, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) for biocompatibility, and aryl-aldehyde moieties for enzyme immobilization. The alkyne group in the polymer structure enables the alternation for other azide-conjugated monomers. The stepwise synthesis of the polymers was fully characterized. P(PEG-co-AM)-b-PF was self-assembled into polymeric nanoparticles (BDOX-GOx@NPs) for glucose oxidase immobilization through Schiff base formation and for encapsulating the prodrug of arylboronate-linked doxorubicin (BA-DOX) under optimal conditions. Glucose oxidase in BDOX-GOx@NPs catalyzes glucose oxidation to produce gluconic acid and H2O2, which cause oxidative stress. Glucose oxidase also consumes glucose, causing starvation in cancer cells. The produced H2O2 can selectively activate the anticancer prodrug BA-DOX for chemotherapy. In vitro data indicate that GOx and the prodrug BA-DOX present inside BDOX-GOx@NPs exhibit higher stability than free glucose oxidase with a favorable active DOX release profile. MDA-MB-231 cells, which express mannose receptors, were used to establish a model in this study. The bioactivity of the nanoplatform in the two- and three-dimensional models of MDA-MB-231 cancer cells was investigated to ascertain its antitumor efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic fatal disease with limited therapeutic options. The infiltration of monocytes and fibroblasts into the injured lungs is implicated in IPF. Enolase-1 (ENO1) is a cytosolic glycolytic enzyme which could translocate onto the cell surface and act as a plasminogen receptor to facilitate cell migration via plasmin activation. Our proprietary ENO1 antibody, HL217, was screened for its specific binding to ENO1 and significant inhibition of cell migration and plasmin activation (patent: US9382331B2). METHODS: In this study, effects of HL217 were evaluated in vivo and in vitro for treating lung fibrosis. RESULTS: Elevated ENO1 expression was found in fibrotic lungs in human and in bleomycin-treated mice. In the mouse model, HL217 reduced bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis, inflammation, body weight loss, lung weight gain, TGF-ß upregulation in bronchial alveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and collagen deposition in lung. Moreover, HL217 reduced the migration of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and the recruitment of myeloid cells into the lungs. In vitro, HL217 significantly reduced cell-associated plasmin activation and cytokines secretion from primary human PBMC and endothelial cells. In primary human lung fibroblasts, HL217 also reduced cell migration and collagen secretion. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest multi-faceted roles of cell surface ENO1 and a potential therapeutic approach for pulmonary fibrosis.

Remission can be achieved with or without glucocorticoid (GC) use, and several recent studies have suggested that long-term remission can be achieved in a small portion of patients. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated remission or long-term remission in the pediatric-onset SLE subgroup. This study analyzed the characteristics and factors associated with long-term remission and GC use in pediatric-onset SLE. Methods: We enrolled 226 patients aged <18 years who received a diagnosis of SLE between January 2006 and December 2016. Three remission condition groups were defined: (A) complete remission, (B) clinical remission off GCs, and (C) clinical remission on GCs. Long-term remission was defined as remission for more than 5 years. We analyzed the treatment durations before remission, durations of remission, and risk factors for non-remission with persistent GC use. Results: During follow-up, 8 patients (3.5%) achieved complete remission, 35 patients (15.5%) achieved clinical remission off GCs, and 93 patients (41.2%) achieved clinical remission on GCs. In groups A, B, and C, 12.5%, 68.6%, and 65.6% of patients, respectively, remained in remission for >1 year. Conclusion: This study assessed remission of pediatric-onset SLE. Up to 60.2% of patients had clinical remission after treatment, and 19% of patients achieved remission off GCs. Long-term remission is rarer in pediatric-onset SLE than in adult-onset SLE.

This study was to investigate urinary beta 3-adrenoceptor concentration as a biomarker for overactive bladder (OAB) and predictor of treatment outcomes in women receiving the beta 3-adrenoceptor agonist mirabegron. The study comprised 50 women identified with OAB and 35 women considered as healthy controls. All women with OAB received daily dosage of 50 mg of mirabegron for 12 weeks. Bladder diaries, OAB-related questionnaires, and global response assessment scale (GRAS) data were collected. Urinary beta 3-adrenoceptor concentration was measured through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All OAB-related questionnaires and GRAS indicated improved posttreatment urinary health. After mirabegron treatment, the frequency of micturition and urgency episodes decreased, but the urinary beta 3-adrenoceptor/creatinine (Cr) ratio increased. The urinary beta 3-adrenoceptor/creatinine ratio was identified as a sensitive biomarker for OAB with a confidence interval of 0.656 to 0.856 (p < 0.001). A negative correlation (- 0.431, p = 0.040) between this biomarker and health-related quality of life (HRQL) scores. The Beta 3-adrenoceptor/Cr levels increased significantly in the treatment-responsive group, while they remained unchanged in the unsatisfactory outcome group. This study shows that 12 weeks of mirabegron treatment improves OAB symptoms and HRQL. Furthermore, urinary beta 3-adrenoceptor concentration may be a diagnostic biomarker for OAB.

The involvement of enolase­1 (ENO1), intracellularly or extracellularly, has been implicated in cancer development. Moreover, anticancer activities of an ENO1­targeting antibody has demonstrated the pathological roles of extracellular ENO1 (surface or secreted forms). However, although ENO1 was first identified as a glycolytic enzyme in the cytosol, to the best of our knowledge, extracellular ENO1 has not been implicated in glycolysis thus far. In the present study, the effects of extracellular ENO1 on glycolysis and other related pro­cancer activities were investigated in multiple myeloma (MM) cells in vitro and in vivo. Knockdown of ENO1 expression reduced lactate production, cell viability, cell migration and surface ENO1 expression in MM cells. Notably, addition of extracellular ENO1 protein in cancer cell culture enhanced glycolytic activity, hypoxia­inducible factor 1­α (HIF­1α) expression, glycolysis­related gene (GRG) expression and pro­cancer activities, such as cell migration, cell viability and tumor­promoting cytokine secretion. Consistently, these extracellular ENO1­induced cellular effects were inhibited by an ENO1­specific monoclonal antibody (mAb). In addition, extracellular ENO1­mediated glycolysis, GRG expression and pro­cancer activities were also reduced by HIF­1α silencing. Lastly, administration of an ENO1 mAb reduced tumor growth and serum lactate levels in an MM xenograft model. These results suggested that extracellular ENO1 (surface or secreted forms) enhanced a HIF­1α­mediated glycolytic pathway, in addition to its already identified roles. Therefore, the results of the present study highlighted the therapeutic potential of ENO1­specific antibodies in treating MM, possibly via glycolysis inhibition, and warrant further studies in other types of cancer.

This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performances of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and FDG PET/CT in the preoperative T-staging of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and determine whether their innovative coordination achieves better prediction. In total, 100 patients diagnosed with ESCC, 57 without (CRT[-]sub) and 43 with (CRT[+]sub) neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, undergoing EUS and FDG PET/CT, followed by surgical resection of the tumor, were included in this analysis. EUS classified T-stages based on the depth of primary tumor invasion, and FDG PET/CT used thresholded maximal standardized uptake value (SUVmax) classifications. By employing pathology results as the reference standard, we assessed the accuracy of EUS and FDG PET/CT, evaluated their concordance using the κ statistic, and conducted a comparative analysis between the two modalities through McNemar's chi-square test. FDG PET/CT had higher overall accuracy than EUS (for CRT[-]sub: 71.9%, κ = 0.56 vs. 56.1%, κ = 0.31, p = 0.06; for CRT[+]sub: 65.1%, κ = 0.50 vs. 18.6%, κ = 0.05, p < 0.01) in predicting pT- and ypT-stage. Our proposed method of incorporating both FDG PET/CT and EUS information could achieve higher accuracies in differentiating between early and locally advanced disease in the CRT[-]sub group (82.5%) and determining residual viable tumor in the CRT[+]sub group (83.7%) than FDG PET/CT or EUS alone. FDG PET/CT had a better diagnostic ability than EUS to predict the (y)pT-stage of ESCC. Our complementary method, which combines the advantages of both imaging modalities, can deliver higher accuracy for clinical applications of ESCC.

Conventional 5-aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic (ALA-PDT) therapy (10-20%) has been widely applied for moderate-to-severe acne. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of non-ablative Q-switched 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser-assisted ALA-PDT with low concentration (2%) on the treatment of acne vulgaris. Enrolled patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups. One group received combined therapy of 2% ALA-PDT and non-ablative Q-switched 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser, and the other received only 2% ALA-PDT. Patients in each group had received 3-session treatments with 4-week intervals (week 0, 4, and 8). Sebum secretion, melanin index, erythema index, and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were assessed at week 2, 8, 12, and 24. VISIA® skin image system score and global esthetic improvement scale (GAIS) were also evaluated. Twenty-four participants were enrolled and evenly randomized to two groups. Significant improvement in sebum secretion was noted in combined therapy group compared to the monotherapy group at week 12 (37.5% versus 16.3%), and the improvement would still be noted until week 24 (18.3% versus 17.4%). Combined group also showed more severe melanin index and erythema index after treatment. For VISIA® skin analysis, patients in combined group had better percentile ranking in porphyrins and red-light images. There were no significant differences in GAIS at the end of the follow-up between each group, whereas higher proportion of satisfaction was noted in combined group at week 2. With the assistance of laser, low concentrations (2%) of 5-ALA can provide effective phototoxic reactions in treating acne vulgaris. The satisfaction of patients is high with acceptable adverse effects.

BACKGROUND: Dental panoramic imaging plays a pivotal role in dentistry for diagnosis and treatment planning. However, correctly positioning patients can be challenging for technicians due to the complexity of the imaging equipment and variations in patient anatomy, leading to positioning errors. These errors can compromise image quality and potentially result in misdiagnoses. OBJECTIVE: This research aims to develop and validate a deep learning model capable of accurately and efficiently identifying multiple positioning errors in dental panoramic imaging. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This retrospective study used 552 panoramic images selected from a hospital Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). We defined six types of errors (E1-E6) namely, (1) slumped position, (2) chin tipped low, (3) open lip, (4) head turned to one side, (5) head tilted to one side, and (6) tongue against the palate. First, six Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models were employed to extract image features, which were then fused using transfer learning. Next, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) was applied to create a classifier for multiple positioning errors, using the fused image features. Finally, the classifier performance was evaluated using 3 indices of precision, recall rate, and accuracy. RESULTS: Experimental results show that the fusion of image features with six binary SVM classifiers yielded high accuracy, recall rates, and precision. Specifically, the classifier achieved an accuracy of 0.832 for identifying multiple positioning errors. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that six SVM classifiers effectively identify multiple positioning errors in dental panoramic imaging. The fusion of extracted image features and the employment of SVM classifiers improve diagnostic precision, suggesting potential enhancements in dental imaging efficiency and diagnostic accuracy. Future research should consider larger datasets and explore real-time clinical application.
