Freshwater ecosystems are threatened by eutrophication, which causes persistent and harmful algal blooms. Filter-feeding bivalve mollusks and submerged macrophytes (SMs) alleviate the eutrophication effects by inhibiting phytoplankton biomass blooms. However, very little is known about whether and how the combined manipulation of filter-feeding bivalves and SMs control eutrophication and influence phytoplankton assemblages. Here, we performed a nutrient-enriched freshwater mesocosm experiment to assess the combined effects of the filter-feeding bivalve Cristaria plicata, a cockscomb pearl mussel, and the macrophyte Hydrilla verticillate on the biomass and composition of phytoplankton assemblages. We found that addition of C. plicata and H. verticillate decreased the water nutrient concentrations and suppressed overall phytoplankton biomass. Further, distinct differences in taxa between restoration and control treatments were observed and noticeably competitive exclusion of cyanobacteria in the restoration treatments occurred. An antagonistic interaction between filter-feeding bivalves and SMs was only detected for total cyanobacteria biomass demonstrating that a larger magnitude of SM restoration may override the effect of filter-feeding bivalves. Our results suggest that manipulation, through the addition of bivalves as grazers, associated with the restoration of SMs, is an efficient approach for reducing cyanobacterial blooms and alleviating eutrophication.

Jingpo Lake is the largest mountain barrier lake in China and plays a key role in breeding, power generation, and providing a source of drinking water. Microbes are important participants in the formation of lake resources and energy cycles. However, the ecological protection of Jingpo Lake has faced serious challenges in recent years. In this study, we investigate the responses of the microbial community's composition of sediments at five locations to an environmental gradient representing water quality and water-depth changes using a metagenomic sequence. We found that the diversity and composition of the microbiota sediments were altered spatially and correlated with the physicochemical factors of water samples. In the microbial community, relatively lower Chao1, alternating conditional expectations, and Shannon and Simpson indices were found at the shallowest location with higher total phosphorus and chlorophyll a. Furthermore, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis revealed that the metabolism function was the most abundant functional classification in Jingpo Lake. The levels of total phosphorus, chlorophyll a and pH were positively correlated with the abundance of Flavobacterium and the bacterial functions of the carbohydrate metabolism and amino acid metabolism. In conclusion, our results reveal the physical and chemical characteristics, as well as the microbial community characteristics, of Jingpo Lake, which provides new insights for studying the relationship between environmental factors and the bacterial community distribution of freshwater ecosystems, in addition to also providing a theoretical basis for the environmental monitoring and protection of the lake.

Big-head Schizothoracin (Aspiorhynchus laticeps) and Tarim Schizothoracin (Schizothorax biddulphi) are locally sympatric in the Tarim River Basin. Although another Schizothoracin (Schizothorax esocinus) in Tarim River basin has been speculated to be hybrid offspring of Big-head Schizothoracin and Tarim Schizothoracin, there was no genetic evidence. Previous studies on the genetics and evolution of Schizothoracins in Xinjiang Province were mostly based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), whose characteristics of maternal inheritance made it hard to answer the question of whether there was hybridization and introgression between Big-head Schizothoracin and Tarim Schizothoracin. In this study, cytochrome b (cytb) gene of mtDNA and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) that is encoded by the nuclear genome were genotyped within the entire samples at the same time. Our results confirmed that Schizothorax esocinus was the hybrid offspring of Big-head Schizothoracin and Tarim Schizothoracin. The heterozygous ITS2 genotypes and/or Aspiorhynchus laticeps-like mtDNA were also detected in a subset of samples that should have been identified as pure Schizothorax biddulphi based on morphology. The ITS2 is characterized by multi-copy, concert evolution, and biparental inheritance. Thus, by comparing with mtDNA data, broad-scale bidirectional hybridization and introgression between Big-head Schizothoracin and Tarim Schizothoracin were revealed. Although interspecific hybridization may play a positive role in ecology and evolution, interspecific hybrids could threaten their parental species by the swamping of genetics and demography. As both parents of hybridization are critically endangered fishes, in this case, it is urgently necessary to strengthen the scientific assessment of the risks of the hybrids and the control of the hybridization and introgression between Aspiorhynchus laticeps and Schizothorax biddulphi in the Tarim River Basin.

Perca fluviatilis is an economically important species of freshwater fish. To understand the genetic structure of P. fluviatilis in China, 268 samples were collected from Wulungu Lake (WL), Jili Lake (JL), the Wulungu River (WR), and the Kalaeerqisi River (KR). These samples were then analyzed using microsatellite markers. A total of 98,425 microsatellite markers were developed based on the genomic data, and 29 polymorphic microsatellite markers were selected to analyze genetic diversity in this study. The number of alleles (Na) and observed heterozygosity (Ho) per population ranged from 4.621 (KR) to 11.172 (WL) and from 0.510 (KR) to 0.716 (JL), respectively. The results of the polymorphic information content (PIC) showed that the WL, JL, and WR populations were highly polymorphic (PIC≥ 0.5) and that the KR population was moderately polymorphic (0.25 ≤ PIC < 0.5). The genetic differentiation coefficient (Fst) among the four P. fluviatilis populations was 0.074, indicating moderate genetic differentiation among the populations in Xinjiang. The reason for the significant difference between the rivers and lakes could be the presence of a dam blocking the flow of P. fluviatilis. The development of microsatellite markers provides support for population genetics in the future. The evaluation of the genetic structure of P. fluviatilis in Xinjiang provides a reference for the reproduction and conservation of P. fluviatilis.

The structural characteristics of the macroinvertebrate community can effectively reflect the health status of lake ecosystems and the quality of the lake ecological environment. It is therefore important to identify the limiting factors of macroinvertebrate community structure for the maintenance of lake ecosystem health. In this study, the community composition of macroinvertebrate assemblages and their relationships with environmental variables were investigated in 13 small lakes within Lianhuan Lake in northern China. A self-organizing map and K-means clustering analysis grouped the macroinvertebrate communities into five groups, and the indicator species reflected the environmental characteristics of each group. Principal component analysis indicated that the classification of the macroinvertebrate communities was affected by environmental variables. The Kruskal-Wallis test results showed that environmental variables (pH, total phosphorus, nitrate, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, permanganate index, and ammonium) had a significant effect on the classification of the macroinvertebrate communities. Redundancy analysis showed that mollusks were significantly negatively correlated with pH and chlorophyll a, while annelids and aquatic insects were significantly positively correlated with chlorophyll a and dissolved oxygen. Spearman correlation analysis showed that the species richness and Shannon's diversity of macroinvertebrates were significantly negatively correlated with total phosphorus, while the biomass of macroinvertebrates was significantly negatively correlated with pH. High alkalinity and lake eutrophication have a serious impact on the macroinvertebrate community. Human disturbances, such as industrial and agricultural runoff, negatively impact the ecological environment and affect macroinvertebrate community structure. Thus, macroinvertebrate community structure should be improved by enhancing the ecological environment and controlling environmental pollution at a watershed scale.

Northern pike (Esox lucius) was widely distributed in the high latitudes of the northern hemisphere. In China, northern pike was originally distributed only in the upper reaches of the Irtysh River in Xinjiang and has appeared in many water bodies outside the Irtysh River Basin in Northern Xinjiang. A total of four populations were collected from north to south in Xinjiang, including Irtysh River (RIR), Ulungu Lake (LUL), a small lake nearby Ulungu River (LJD), and Bosten Lake (LBO). We estimated population genomic parameters, performed gene flow analysis, and estimated the effective population size of each population. The proportion of individuals with high inbreeding coefficient (F ≥ 0.0625) accounted for 36.4% (44/121) of all sequenced individuals, approximately 4.5% (1/22) in LUL, 25.9% (7/27) in LBO, 42.9% (18/42) in RIR, and 60% (18/30) in LJD. RIR had the highest mean of genomic relatedness (coancestry coefficient = 0.025 ± 0.040, IBD = 0.036 ± 0.078). Gene flow results showed that the population spreading was from RIR into two branches, one was LBO, and the other continued to split into LUL and LJD, and migration signal from LBO to LUL was detected. Our results suggested that the extinction risk of northern pike was very low in Xinjiang of China, and the controlled capture fishery of northern pike could be developed reasonably.

Macroinvertebrate assemblages are structured by a number of abiotic and biotic factors interacting simultaneously. We investigated macroinvertebrate assemblages along gradients of human disturbance and morphometric characteristics in five lakes connected by the same stream. We aimed to assess the relative effects of environmental gradients on macroinvertebrate assemblages and to investigate whether water quality effects on the assemblages were correlated with buffer land use. There were significant differences in macroinvertebrate community compositions among lakes, and our results indicated that oligochaetes (mainly Limnodrilus) and insects (mainly Chironomus) contributed highly to the differences. We used redundancy analysis with variation partitioning to quantify the independent and combined anthropogenic effects of water quality and land use gradients on the macroinvertebrate community. The independent effect of water quality was responsible for 17% of the total variance in macroinvertebrate community composition, the independent effect of buffer land use accounted for 6% of variation, and the combined variation between land use change and water quality accounted for 12%. Our study indicated that both the independent effects of land use and within-lake water quality can explain the influence in macroinvertebrate assemblages, with significant interactions between the two. This is rather important to notice that changes in buffer land use generally may alter nutrient inputs and thus severely affect abiotic conditions encountered by macroinvertebrate. Our study demonstrates that considering buffer zone effects explicitly may be significant in the selection and application of conservation and management strategies.

The combined toxicity effects of microcystins-LR (MCLR) and polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) on the hatching of F1 zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos were investigated in this study due to the increasing concerns of both plastic pollution and eutrophication in aquatic environments. Three-month-old zebrafish were used to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying the combined effect of MCLR (0, 0.9, 4.5, and 22.5 µg/L) on egg hatching in the existence of PSNPs (100 µg/L). The results demonstrated the existence of PSNPs further increased the accumulation of MCLR in F1 embryos. The hatching rates of F1 embryos were inhibited after exposure to 22.5 µg/L MCLR, and the presence of PSNPs aggravated the hatching inhibition induced by MCLR. The decrease of hatching enzyme activity and the abnormality of spontaneous movement were observed. We examined the altered expression levels of the genes associated with the hatching enzyme (tox16, foxp1, ctslb, xpb1, klf4, cap1, bmp4, cd63, He1.2, zhe1, and prl), cholinergic system (ache and chrnα7), and muscle development (Wnt, MyoD, Myf5, Myogenin, and MRF4). The results suggested the existence of PSNPs exacerbated the hatching inhibition of F1 embryos through decreasing the activity of enzyme, interfering with the cholinergic system, and affecting the muscle development.

The coexistence of nanoplastics (NPs) and various pollutants in the environment has become a problem that cannot be ignored. In order to identify the microcystin-LR (MCLR) bioaccumulation and the potential impacts on the early growth of F1 zebrafish (Danio rerio) offspring in the presence of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs), PSNPs and MCLR were used to expose adult zebrafish for 21days. The exposure groups divided into MCLR (0, 0.9, 4.5 and 22.5µgL-1) alone groups and PSNP (100µgL-1) and MCLR co-exposure groups. F1 embryos were collected and developed to 120 h post-fertilization (hpf) in clear water. Compared with the exposure to MCLR only, the combined exposure increased the parental transfer of MCLR to the offspring and subsequently exacerbated the growth inhibition of F1 larvae. Further research clarified that combined exposure of PSNPs and MCLR could reduce the levels of thyroxine (T4) and 3, 5, 3'-triiodothyronine (T3) by altering the expression of hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis-related genes, eventually leading to growth inhibition of F1 larvae. Our results also exhibited combined exposure of PSNPs and MCLR could change the transcription of key genes of the GH/IGF axis compared with MCLR single exposure, suggesting the GH/IGF axis was a potential target for the growth inhibition of F1 larvae in PSNPs and MCLR co-exposure groups. The present study highlights the potential risks of coexistence of MCLR and PSNPs on development of fish offspring, and the environmental risks to aquatic ecosystems.

An investigation was conducted on the community structure of macrozoobenthos in the main stream of Songhua River in spring (April and May), summer (July and August), and autumn (from September to November), and the water quality of the main stream was assessed with biotic indices. A total of 116 species of macrobenthos were collected, belonging to 36 families and 16 orders, among which, aquatic insects had the largest number, with 74 species (63.8% of the total) belonging to 21 families and 6 orders. The annual average density and biomass of the macrobenthos were 66.80 ind x m(-2) and 24.30 g x m(-2), respectively. The average density was the highest (90.52 ind x m(-2)) in spring, followed by in autumn (61.26 ind x m(-2)), and in summer (48.63 ind x m(-2)), while the average biomass was the highest (35.35 g x m(-2)) in autumn, followed by in summer (23.12 g x m(-2)), and in spring (14.41 g x m(-2)). The Shannon index, Pielou index, and Simpson index were the highest in spring, and were nearly the same in summer and autumn. Few species inhabited in the same types of microhabitats in all river sections. The species similarity in all sections was lower, with the largest similarity being only 60%. The species quantity of each functional feeding group was near, with 26 shredders, 32 collectors, 28 scrapers, and 30 predators. The water quality assessed with biotic index (BI) and family biotic index (FBI) was basically coincident with each other, and was accordant with chemical monitoring. The water quality above the Harbin Section of Songhua River was fair, and that below the Harbin Section was contaminated or seriously contaminated. It was presumed that the macrobenthos species composition and community structure had been affected due to the building of ship-electricity hinge in Dadingzi Mountain.
