α,ω-Dicarboxylic acids, ω-aminoalkanoic acids, and α,ω-diaminoalkanes are valuable building blocks for the production of biopolyesters and biopolyamides. One of the key steps in producing these chemicals is the oxidation of ω-hydroxycarboxylic acids using alcohol dehydrogenases (e.g., ChnD of Acinetobacter sp. NCIMB 9871). However, the reaction and structural features of these enzymes remain mostly undiscovered. Thereby, we have investigated characteristics of ChnD based on enzyme kinetics, substrate-docking simulations, and mutation studies. Kinetic analysis revealed a distinct preference of ChnD for medium chain ω-hydroxycarboxylic acids, with the highest catalytic efficiency of 18.0 mM-1s-1 for 12-hydroxydodecanoic acid among C6 to C12 ω-hydroxycarboxylic acids. The high catalytic efficiency was attributed to the positive interactions between the carboxyl group of the substrates and the guanidino group of two arginine residues (i.e., Arg62 and Arg266) in the substrate binding site. The ChnD_R62L variant showed the increased efficiency and affinity, particularly for fatty alcohols (i.e., C6-C10) and branched-chain fatty alcohols, such as 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol. Overall, this study contributes to the deeper understanding of medium-chain primary aliphatic alcohol dehydrogenases and their applications for the production of industrially relevant chemicals such as α,ω-dicarboxylic acids, ω-aminoalkanoic acids, and α,ω-diaminoalkanes from renewable biomass.

Robotic esophagectomy has improved early outcomes and enhanced the quality of lymphadenectomy for esophageal cancer surgery. This study aimed to determine risk factors for long-term survival following robotic esophagectomy and the causes of long-term mortality. We included patients who underwent robotic esophagectomy at our institute between 2010 and 2022. Robotic esophagectomy was defined as a surgical procedure performed robotically in both the abdomen and thorax. Robotic esophagectomy was performed in patients at all stages, including advanced stages, even in patients with stage IV and supraclavicular lymph node metastasis. A total of 340 patients underwent robotic esophagectomy during the study period. Ivor-Lewis operation and McKeown operation were performed on 153 (45.0%) and 187 (55.0%) patients, respectively. The five-year survival rates based on clinical stages were as follows: 85.2% in stage I, 62.0% in stage II, 54.5% in stage III, and 40.3% in stage IV. Risk factors for long-term survival included body mass index, Charlson comorbidity index, clinical stages, and postoperative complications of grade 4 or higher. Among the cases of long-term mortality, recurrence accounted for 42 patients (61.7%), while non-cancer-related death occurred in 26 patients (38.2%). The most common cause of non-cancer-related death was malnutrition and poor general condition, observed in 11 patients (16.2%). Robotic esophagectomy has demonstrated the ability to achieve acceptable long-term survival rates, even in patients with cervical lymph node metastasis. However, addressing high-grade postoperative complications and long-term malnutrition remains crucial for further improving the long-term survival outcomes of patients with esophageal cancer.

Children autonomously make sound moral judgments based on internal criteria, but they tend to make erroneous judgments in the presence of social influences, and the reasons for these errors are not well understood. Thus, the current research investigated how the presence of observers who can see and listen to 3-year-old children's judgments but who do not present their opinions influences children's conformity in moral judgment behavior. In Experiment 1, the children (N = 30) were presented with pictures depicting prosocial behaviors and asked whether the behaviors were acceptable. The children's tendency to change their answers after hearing the counterintuitive opinions of informants was then measured. The results showed that the children's moral judgments were more likely to conform to that of the group in the presence of observers. Experiment 2 aimed to determine the reason children were more likely to conform to a group when being watched by observers in Experiment 1. Children (N = 30) were randomly assigned to two conditions with different observer conditions as follows. Observers were either wearing headsets, indicating that they could not hear the children's responses, or had them hanging around their necks, indicating that they could. The results showed that children's conformity behavior depended on whether observers could hear what they were saying. The current findings are expected to help elucidate not only social factors that affect children's moral judgments but also the developmental mechanism of an observer effect.

The topology of the basement membrane (BM) affects cell physiology and pathology, and BM thickening is associated with various chronic lung diseases. In addition, the topology of commercially available poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) membranes, which are used in preclinical in vitro models, differs from that of the human BM, which has a fibrous and elastic structure. In this study, we verified the effect of BM thickness on the differentiation of normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells. To evaluate whether the thickness of poly-ε-carprolactone (PCL) mesh affects the differentiation of NHBE cells, cells were grown on thin- (6-layer) and thick-layer (80-layer) meshes consisting of electrospun PCL nanofibers using an air-liquid interface (ALI) cell culture system. It was found that the NHBE cells formed a normal pseudostratified epithelium composed of ciliated, goblet, and basal cells on the thin-layer PCL mesh; however, goblet cell hyperplasia was observed on the thick-layer PCL mesh. Differentiated NHBE cells cultured on the thick-layer PCL mesh also demonstrated increased epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) compared to those cultured on the thin-layer PCL mesh. In addition, expression of Sox9, nuclear factor (NF)-κB, and oxidative stress-related markers, which are also associated with goblet cell hyperplasia, was increased in the differentiated NHBE cells cultured on the thick-layer PCL mesh. Thus, the use of thick electrospun PCL mesh led to NHBE cells differentiating into hyperplastic goblet cells via EMT and the oxidative stress-related signaling pathway. Therefore, the topology of the BM, for example, thickness, may affect the differentiation direction of human bronchial epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Remimazolam is a short-acting benzodiazepine newly approved for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. Remimazolam emerges as an ideal drug for the neurosurgical population due to its rapid emergence, enabling early neurological assessment, and its ability to maintain perfusion pressure, which is crucial for preventing cerebral ischemia. However, the use of benzodiazepine has been associated with an increased risk of postoperative delirium (POD). There is currently limited evidence about the relationship between remimazolam-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) and POD. METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized, non-inferiority trial, we plan to include 696 adult patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status class I to III, undergoing elective neurovascular surgery under general anesthesia. After informed consent, the patients will be randomized to receive either remimazolam or propofol-based TIVA with a 1:1 ratio. The primary outcome is the incidence of POD within 5 days after surgery. Secondary outcomes include subtypes, number of positive assessments and severity of POD, emergence agitation, intraoperative awareness and undesirable patient movement, intraoperative hypotension, and postoperative cognitive function. The data will be analyzed in modified intention to treat. DISCUSSION: This trial will evaluate the effect of remimazolam on the development of POD compared to propofol anesthesia. The results of this trial will provide evidence regarding the choice of optimal anesthetics to minimize the risk of POD in neurosurgical patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study protocol was prospectively registered at the Clinical trials ( https://clinicaltrials.gov , NCT06115031, principal investigator: Jiseon Jeong; date of first registration: November 2, 2023, before the recruitment of the first participant.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and periodontitis (PD) have intricated connections as chronic inflammatory diseases. While the immune response is a key factor that accounts for their association, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. To gain a deeper understanding of the connection, we conducted research using a multiomics approach. We generated whole genome and methylation profiling array data from the periodontium of PD patients with DM (PDDM) and without DM to confirm genetic and epigenetic changes. Independent bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing data were employed to verify the expression levels of hypo-methylated genes. We observed a gradual rise in C>T base substitutions and hypomethylation in PD and PDDM patients compared with healthy participants. Furthermore, specific genetic and epigenetic alterations were prominently associated with the Fc-gamma receptor-mediated phagocytosis pathway. The upregulation of these genes was confirmed in both the periodontal tissues of PD patients and the pancreatic tissues of T2DM patients. Through single-cell RNA analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, substantial upregulation of Fc-gamma receptors and related genes was particularly identified in monocytes. Our findings suggest that targeting the Fc-gamma signaling pathway in monocytes holds promise as a potential treatment strategy for managing systemic complications associated with diabetes.

Here, we report an electrochemiluminescence (ECL)-based approach for imaging of local photoelectrochemical processes on hematite in a spatially and temporally controlled manner. The local processes were guided by flexible and dynamic light illumination, not requiring any prepatterned conductive features or photomasks, with a digital micromirror device (DMD). The imaging approach was based on light-addressable electrochemical reactions on hematite, resulting in photoinduced ECL emission for spatiotemporally resolved imaging of photoelectrochemical processes selectively guided by light illumination. After clarifying the capability of hematite as a photosensitive electrode, we validated that the illuminated hematite exhibited stable light-guided ECL emission in correspondence with the illuminated area, with a spatial resolution of 0.8 µm and a temporal resolution of 1 µs, even over a long period of 6 h. More importantly, this study exemplified the simple yet effective ECL-based approach for electrochemical visualization of local photoelectrochemical processes guided by flexible and dynamic adjustment of light illumination in a spatiotemporally controlled way.

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being applied in pathology and cytology, showing promising results. We collected a large dataset of whole slide images (WSIs) of thyroid fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNA), incorporating z-stacking, from institutions across the nation to develop an AI model. Methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective diagnostic accuracy study using thyroid FNA dataset from the Open AI Dataset Project that consists of digitalized images samples collected from 3 university hospitals and 215 Korean institutions through extensive quality check during the case selection, scanning, labeling, and reviewing process. Multiple z-layer images were captured using three different scanners and image patches were extracted from WSIs and resized after focus fusion and color normalization. We pretested six AI models, determining Inception ResNet v2 as the best model using a subset of dataset, and subsequently tested the final model with total datasets. Additionally, we compared the performance of AI and cytopathologists using randomly selected 1031 image patches and reevaluated the cytopathologists' performance after reference to AI results. Results: A total of 10,332 image patches from 306 thyroid FNAs, comprising 78 malignant (papillary thyroid carcinoma) and 228 benign from 86 institutions were used for the AI training. Inception ResNet v2 achieved highest accuracy of 99.7%, 97.7%, and 94.9% for training, validation, and test dataset, respectively (sensitivity 99.9%, 99.6%, and 100% and specificity 99.6%, 96.4%, and 90.4% for training, validation, and test dataset, respectively). In the comparison between AI and human, AI model showed higher accuracy and specificity than the average expert cytopathologists beyond the two-standard deviation (accuracy 99.71% [95% confidence interval (CI), 99.38-100.00%] vs. 88.91% [95% CI, 86.99-90.83%], sensitivity 99.81% [95% CI, 99.54-100.00%] vs. 87.26% [95% CI, 85.22-89.30%], and specificity 99.61% [95% CI, 99.23-99.99%] vs. 90.58% [95% CI, 88.80-92.36%]). Moreover, after referring to the AI results, the performance of all the experts (accuracy 96%, 95%, and 96%, respectively) and the diagnostic agreement (from 0.64 to 0.84) increased. Conclusions: These results suggest that the application of AI technology to thyroid FNA cytology may improve the diagnostic accuracy as well as intra- and inter-observer variability among pathologists. Further confirmatory research is needed.

This study aimed to develop a new simple and effective prognostic model using artificial intelligence (AI)-based chest radiograph (CXR) results to predict the outcomes of pneumonia. Patients aged > 18 years, admitted the treatment of pneumonia between March 2020 and August 2021 were included. We developed prognostic models, including an AI-based consolidation score in addition to the conventional CURB-65 (confusion, urea, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and age ≥ 65) and pneumonia severity index (PSI) for predicting pneumonia outcomes, defined as 30-day mortality during admission. A total of 489 patients, including 310 and 179 patients in training and test sets, were included. In the training set, the AI-based consolidation score on CXR was a significant variable for predicting the outcome (hazard ratio 1.016, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.001-1.031). The model that combined CURB-65, initial O2 requirement, intubation, and the AI-based consolidation score showed a significantly high C-index of 0.692 (95% CI 0.628-0.757) compared to other models. In the test set, this model also demonstrated a significantly high C-index of 0.726 (95% CI 0.644-0.809) compared to the conventional CURB-65 and PSI (p < 0.001 and 0.017, respectively). Therefore, a new prognostic model incorporating AI-based CXR results along with traditional pneumonia severity score could be a simple and useful tool for predicting pneumonia outcomes in clinical practice.

Introduction: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) presents a growing health concern in pediatric populations due to its association with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) offers a non-invasive and potentially effective alternative for identifying MASLD risk in youth with overweight or obesity. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the utility of BIA for screening for MASLD in the youth. Method: This retrospective, cross-sectional study included 206 children and adolescents aged <20 years who were overweight and obese. The correlations between anthropometric measurements and BIA parameters and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were assessed using Pearson's correlation analysis. Logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the associations between these parameters and ALT level elevation and MASLD score. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to assess the predictive ability of the parameters for MASLD. Results: Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), percentage body fat (PBF), and BIA parameters combined with anthropometric measurements were correlated with ALT level. Logistic regression revealed that WHR, skeletal muscle mass/WHR, PBF-WHR, fat-free mass/WHR, and appendicular skeletal muscle mass/WHR were correlated with ALT level elevation after adjusting for age, sex, and puberty. WHR, PBF-WHR, and visceral fat area (VFA)-WHR were positively correlated with the MASLD score in the total population after adjusting for age, sex, and puberty. PBF-WHR and VFA-WHR were correlated with the MASLD score even in youth with a normal ALT level. The cutoff points and area under the ROC curves were 34.6 and 0.69 for PBF-WHR, respectively, and 86.6 and 0.79 for VFA-WHR, respectively. Discussion: This study highlights the utility of combining BIA parameters and WHR in identifying the risk of MASLD in overweight and obese youth, even in those with a normal ALT level. BIA-based screening offers a less burdensome and more efficient alternative to conventional MASLD screening methods, facilitating early detection and intervention in youth at risk of MASLD.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the adequacy of current nurse staffing levels by identifying nursing activities and workload. METHODS: The study used a mixed-method design. A nursing activity survey was conducted using the work sampling method over 2 working days with 119 general ward nurses. A focus group interview was conducted with 12 nurses. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 and content analysis, respectively. RESULTS: The most amount of time was spent on medication (in direct nursing) and electronic medical record documentation (in indirect nursing). The appropriate nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:7.7 for the day shift, 1:9.0 for the evening shift, and 1:11.9 for the night shift. However, the current nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:9.4, 1:11.0, and 1:13.8 for the day, evening, and night shifts, respectively. Therefore, the current nurse staffing level is insufficient for the workload. In the focus group interview, the main reasons cited for being unable to complete tasks within working hours were communication and coordination, and the nursing electronic medical record. The essential nursing activities of basic nursing and emotional support were overlooked owing to a heavy workload. Therefore, an adequate nurse staffing level should be higher than the measured quantitative workload. CONCLUSION: These results suggest the general wards of tertiary hospitals should evaluate the adequacy of their current nurse staffing and allocate sufficient nurses to improve patient safety and nursing care quality.

OBJECTIVE: Neurosurgical targeting of the cerebellar dentate nucleus via ablative dentatotomy and stimulation of the dentate nucleus was historically used for effective treatment of spasticity. Yet for decades, neurosurgical treatment of spasticity targeting the cerebellum was bypassed in favor of alternative treatments such as intrathecal baclofen pumps and selective dorsal rhizotomies. Cerebellar neuromodulation has recently reemerged as a promising and effective therapy for spasticity and related movement disorders. METHODS: In this narrative review, the authors contextualize the historical literature of cerebellar neuromodulation, comparing it with modern approaches and exploring future directions with regard to cerebellar neuromodulation for spasticity. RESULTS: Neurosurgical intervention on the cerebellum dates to the use of dentatotomy in the 1960s, which had progressed to electrical stimulation of the cerebellar cortex and dentate nucleus by the 1980s. By 2024, modern neurosurgical approaches such as tractography-based targeting of the dentate nucleus and transcranial magnetic stimulation of cerebellar cortex have demonstrated promise for treating spasticity. CONCLUSIONS: Cerebellar neuromodulation of the dentate nucleus and cerebellar cortex are promising therapies for severe cases of spasticity. Open areas for exploration in the field include the following: tractography-based targeting, adaptive cerebellar stimulation, and investigations into the network dynamics between the cerebellar cortex, deep cerebellar nuclei, and the subcortical and cortical structures of the cerebrum.

BACKGROUND: Various clinical classifications of craniopharyngiomas (CRPs) have been proposed to suggest optimal surgical planning. We aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of pediatric CRPs and the clinical significance of anatomical classification in relation to the diaphragm sellae. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on patients under 18 years of age who underwent surgery for CRPs from July 1998 to August 2022. The patients were divided into transcranial approach (TCA), and transsphenoidal approach (TSA) groups, which included microscopic TSA and endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) groups. EEA has been adopted at our institute since 2011. CRPs were classified by their origin and relationship with the diaphragm sellae. RESULTS: A total of 132 pediatric CRP patients were included in this study, 117 of whom underwent surgery for primary CRP and 15 for recurrent CRP. Among them, 89 (67.4%) underwent TCA, 9 (6.8%) had microscopic TSA, and 34 (25.8%) had EEA. In subdiaphragmatic CRPs with competent diaphragm sellae, TSA tended to yield better outcomes than did TCA in terms of stalk preservation and ophthalmological outcomes. After the introduction of EEA, the proportion of supradiaphragmatic CRPs treated via the TSA increased from 0% to 50% (p < 0.001). Gross total resection (HR=0.194; 95% CI=0.102-0.367, p < 0.001) and adjuvant therapy (HR=0.208; 95% CI=0.048-0.897, p = 0.035) were found to be positive prognostic factors for long-term tumor control. CONCLUSIONS: Over time, with the adoption of EEA at our institute, the impact of anatomical classification on the surgical apprpoach has decreased. Nevertheless, an individualized surgical approach should be employed to improve long-term outcomes and minimize complications for pediatric CRPs.

PURPOSE: Adequate oxygenation and airway management during deep sedation can be challenging. We investigated the effect of high-flow nasal cannula (group HF) and conventional nasal cannula (group CO) during sedation for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). METHODS: Patients undergoing ESD with deep sedation were enrolled. The primary outcome was difference in lowest oxygen saturation (SpO2) between the groups. Incidence of hypoxia (SpO2 < 90%), patients with SpO2 < 95%, hypercapnia, and airway interventions; operator satisfaction; and adverse events were recorded. RESULTS: Thirty-two patients in each group completed the study. The mean of minimum SpO2 values was significantly higher in group HF than in group CO (96.8% ± 4.2% vs. 93.3% ± 5.3%, p = 0.005). The incidence of hypoxia was comparable between the groups (4 [12.5%] vs. 6 [18.8%], p = 0.491); however, patients with SpO2 < 95% were significantly less in group HF (5 [15.6%] vs. 18 [56.3%], p = 0.003). Incidence of hypercapnia was higher in group HF than in group CO (14 [46.7%] vs. 5 [16.7%], p = 0.013). Airway rescue interventions were significantly less common in group HF. Satisfaction of operators and post-procedural complications were comparable between the two groups. In multivariable analysis, group CO and higher body mass index were risk factors for airway managements (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 6.204 [1.784-21.575], p = 0.004; 1.337 [1.043-1.715], p = 0.022, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to conventional nasal cannula, high-flow nasal cannula maintained higher minimum SpO2 value during deep sedation with propofol-remifentanil for ESD. In this study, changes in bioactive compound contents and the in vitro biological activity of mixed grains, including oats, sorghum, finger millet, adzuki bean, and proso millet, with eight different blending ratios were investigated. The total phenolic compounds and flavonoid contents ranged from 14.43-16.53 mg gallic acid equivalent/g extract and 1.22-5.37 mg catechin equivalent/g extract, respectively, depending on the blending ratio. The DI-8 blend (30% oats, 30% sorghum, 15% finger millet, 15% adzuki bean, and 10% proso millet) exhibited relatively higher antioxidant and anti-diabetic effects than other blending samples. The levels of twelve amino acids and eight organic acids in the grain mixes were measured. Among the twenty metabolites, malonic acid, asparagine, oxalic acid, tartaric acid, and proline were identified as key metabolites across the blending samples. Moreover, the levels of lactic acid, oxalic acid, and malonic acid, which are positively correlated with α-glucosidase inhibition activity, were considerably higher in the DI-blending samples. The results of this study suggest that the DI-8 blend could be used as a functional ingredient as it has several bioactive compounds and biological activities, including anti-diabetic activity.

Traditional monoclonal antibodies such as Trastuzumab encounter limitations when treating Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer, particularly in cases that develop resistance. This study introduces plant-derived anti-HER2 variable fragments of camelid heavy chain domain (VHH) fragment crystallizable region (Fc) KEDL(K) antibody as a potent alternative for overcoming these limitations. A variety of biophysical techniques, in vitro assays, and in vivo experiments uncover the antibody's nanoscale binding dynamics with transmembrane HER2 on living cells. Single-molecule force spectroscopy reveals the rapid formation of two robust bonds, exhibiting approximately 50 pN force resistance and bond lifetimes in the second range. The antibody demonstrates a specific affinity for HER2-positive breast cancer cells, including those that are Trastuzumab-resistant. Moreover, in immune-deficient mice, the plant-derived anti-HER2 VHH-FcK antibody exhibits superior antitumor activity, especially against tumors that are resistant to Trastuzumab. These findings underscore the plant-derived antibody's potential as an impactful immunotherapeutic strategy for treating Trastuzumab-resistant HER2-positive breast cancer.

Rotator cuff tendon tears are a leading cause of shoulder pain. They are challenging to treat, and tendon-bone healing has a high failure rate despite successful surgery. Tendons connect the muscles and bones, which make them important for the body's overall mobility and stability. Metabolic diseases, including diabetes or high blood pressure, can affect the healing process after repair of a damaged tendon. With a global incidence of 9.3%, diabetes is considered as a significant risk factor for rotator cuff tendon healing because it causes structural, inflammatory, and vascular changes in the tendon. However, the mechanisms of how diabetes affects tendon healing remain unknown. Several factors have been suggested, including glycation product accumulation, adipokine dysregulation, increased levels of reactive oxygen species, apoptosis, inflammatory cytokines, imbalanced matrix-metalloproteinase-to-tissue-inhibitor ratio, and impaired angiogenesis and differentiation of the tendon sheath. Despite the effects of diabetes on tendon function and healing, few treatments are available to improve recovery in these patients. This review summarizes the current literature on the pathophysiological changes of the tendon in diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Preclinical and clinical evidence regarding the association between diabetes and tendon healing is presented. Moreover, current approaches to improve tendon healing in patients with diabetes are reviewed.

Hypertension remains a significant global health concern, contributing significantly to cardiovascular diseases and mortality rates. The inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) plays a crucial role in alleviating high blood pressure. We investigated the potential of finger millets (Eleusine coracana) as a natural remedy for hypertension by isolating and characterizing its ACE-inhibitory compound. First, we evaluated the ACE-inhibitory activity of the finger millet ethanol extract and subsequently proceeded with solvent fractionation. Among the solvent fractions, the ethyl acetate fraction exhibited the highest ACE inhibitory activity and was further fractionated. Using preparative high-performance liquid chromatography, the ethyl acetate fraction was separated into four subfractions, with fraction 2 (F2) exhibiting the highest ACE inhibitory activity. Subsequent 1 H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 13 C-NMR analyses confirmed that the isolated compound from F2 was catechin. Furthermore, molecular docking studies indicated that catechin has the potential to act as an ACE inhibitor. These findings suggest that finger millets, particularly as a source of catechin, have the potential to be used as a natural antihypertensive.

This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the Cancer Public Library Database (CPLD), established under the Korean Clinical Data Utilization for Research Excellence project (K-CURE). The CPLD links data from four major population-based public sources: the Korea National Cancer Incidence Database in the Korea Central Cancer Registry, cause-of-death data in Statistics Korea, the National Health Information Database in the National Health Insurance Service, and the National Health Insurance Research Database in the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service. These databases are linked using an encrypted resident registration number. The CPLD, established in 2022 and updated annually, comprises 1,983,499 men and women newly diagnosed with cancer between 2012 and 2019. It contains data on cancer registration and death, demographics, medical claims, general health checkups, and national cancer screening. The most common cancers among men in the CPLD were stomach (16.1%), lung (14.0%), colorectal (13.3%), prostate (9.6%), and liver (9.3%) cancers. The most common cancers among women were thyroid (20.4%), breast (16.6%), colorectal (9.0%), stomach (7.8%), and lung (6.2%) cancers. Among them, 571,285 died between 2012 and 2020 owing to cancer (89.2%) or other causes (10.8%). Upon approval, the CPLD is accessible to researchers through the K-CURE portal. The CPLD is a unique resource for diverse cancer research to investigate medical use before a cancer diagnosis, during initial diagnosis and treatment, and long-term follow-up. This offers expanded insight into healthcare delivery across the cancer continuum, from screening to end-of-life care.

PURPOSE: This study comprehensively examines the disability acceptance experience of individuals who become disabled following accidents in the military after enlistment. METHODS: In-depth interviews and participative observation of two soldiers with disabilities are conducted. Data sources encompass the transcripts from these interviews, relevant news videos, and articles on the participants. A qualitative case study approach is applied to conduct both "within-case" and "cross-case" analyses. RESULTS: Although the two participants survived a crippling accidents, their military units did not actively attempt to resolve the accident. They grappled with despair and found it challenging to accept their new status as individuals with disability. Over time, they noticed changes in their personal relationships and started considering themselves burdens on their caregivers. However, despite encountering psychological challenges, which were marked by repeated setbacks and disappointments, the soldiers consistently made determined efforts to realize their objectives. Moreover, they strove to lead purposeful lives despite suffering the adversities caused by their disabilities. CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first in-depth examination of the disability acceptance experiences of soldiers with disability. The insights gleaned from our in-depth interviews will help formulate psychological and physical support systems for such individuals.
