RESUMO

The fibrous wastes generated from the mills of textile production can be recycled and converted into high add-values products to be implemented in several applications. The current study aimed to employ commercial free cellulase enzyme to partially hydrolyze (activate) the polyester cotton blended (PET/C) fibrous wastes by creation functional groups such as OH and COOH on their surfaces. The activated fibrous wastes were then modified by coating with ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) biosynthesized by actinobacterial cultures free supernatant. The isolate was identified as Streptomyces pseudogriseolus with accession number of OR574241. The conditions that influence the actino-synthesis of ZnO-NPs were optimized and the product was characterized using spectroscopic vision, FTIR, XRD, TEM and SEM. The characteristic ZnO peaks were obviously observed by EDX analysis with 0.38 and 0.75% (wt%), respectively. TEM analyses proved the nanoscale of ZnO-NPs (5-15 nm) which was followed by cytotoxic evaluation for the produced NPs. Fortunately, the tested actino-ZnO-NPs didn't have any cytotoxicity against human normal fibroblast cell line (BJ1), which means that the product can be safely used in a direct-contact with human skin. The treated PET/C blended waste fabrics coated with ZnO-NPs showed high antimicrobial activity and ultraviolet protection values after functionalization by cellulase. EDX analysis demonstrates the presence of Zn peaks on the coated fabrics compared with their absence in blank and control samples, while SEM images showed the formation of a thin layer of ZnO-NPs on the fabric surface. The obtained smart textile can be applied several needed sectors.

RESUMO

Background: Preoperative intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) before coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) could improve operative outcomes by augmenting the diastolic coronary blood flow. Data on preoperative IABP use in patients with left-main coronary artery (LMCA) disease are limited. This study aimed to characterize patients who received preoperative IABP before CABG for LMCA and evaluate its effect on postoperative outcomes. Methods: This multicenter retrospective cohort study that included consecutive 914 patients who underwent CABG for unprotected LMCA disease from January 2015 to December 2019 in 14 tertiary referral centers. Patients were grouped according to the preoperative IABP insertion into patients with IABP (n=101) and without IABP (n=813). Propensity score matching adjusting for preoperative variables, with 1:1 match and a caliber of 0.03 identified 80 matched pairs. The primary outcomes used in propensity score matching were cardiac mortality and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE). Results: IABP was commonly inserted in patients with previous myocardial infarction (MI), chronic kidney disease, peripheral arterial disease, and congestive heart failure. IABP patients had higher EuroSCORE [ES >8%: 95 (11.86%) vs. 40 (39.60%), P<0.001] and SYNTAX {29 [interquartile range (IQR) 25-35] vs. 33 (IQR 26-36); P=0.02} scores. Preoperative cardiogenic shock and arrhythmia were more prevalent in patients with IABP, while acute coronary syndrome was more prevalent in patients without IABP. After matching, there was no difference in vasoactive inotropic score between groups [3.5 (IQR 1-7.5) vs. 6 (IQR 1-13.5), P=0.06], and lactate levels were nonsignificantly higher in patients with IABP [2.4 (IQR 1.4-4.5) vs. 3.1 (IQR 1.05-7.75), P=0.05]. There were no differences between groups in acute kidney injury [20 (25%) vs. 26 (32.5%), P=0.34], cerebrovascular accidents [3 (3.75%) vs. 4 (5%), P>0.99], heart failure [5 (6.25%) vs. 7 (8.75%), P=0.75], MI [7 (8.75%) vs. 8 (10%), P>0.99], major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events [10 (12.5%) vs. 17 (21.25%), P=0.21], and cardiac mortality [6 (7.50%) vs. 14 (17.50%), P=0.09]. Patients who received IABP had longer ventilation times [8.5 (IQR 6-23) vs. 15.5 (IQR 5-50.5) h, P=0.03] and intensive care unit (ICU) stays [3 (IQR 2-5) vs. 4 (IQR 2-7.5) days, P=0.01]. Conclusions: Preoperative IABP in patients with LMCA might not be associated with reduced cardiac mortality or hospital complications. IABP could increase the duration of mechanical ventilation and ICU stay, and its use should be individualized for each patient.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive and devastating muscle disease, resulting from the absence of dystrophin. This leads to cell membrane instability, susceptibility to contraction-induced muscle damage, subsequent muscle degeneration, and eventually disability and early death of patients. Currently, there is no cure for DMD. Our recent studies identified that lipin1 plays a critical role in maintaining myofiber stability and integrity. However, lipin1 gene expression levels are dramatically reduced in the skeletal muscles of DMD patients and mdx mice. METHODS: To identify whether increased lipin1 expression could prevent dystrophic pathology, we employed unique muscle-specific mdx:lipin1 transgenic (mdx:lipin1Tg/0) mice in which lipin1 was restored in the dystrophic muscle of mdx mice, intramuscular gene delivery, as well as cell culture system. RESULTS: We found that increased lipin1 expression suppressed muscle degeneration and inflammation, reduced fibrosis, strengthened membrane integrity, and resulted in improved muscle contractile and lengthening force, and muscle performance in mdx:lipin1Tg/0 compared to mdx mice. To confirm the role of lipin1 in dystrophic muscle, we then administered AAV1-lipin1 via intramuscular injection in mdx mice. Consistently, lipin1 restoration inhibited myofiber necroptosis and lessened muscle degeneration. Using a cell culture system, we further found that differentiated primary mdx myoblasts had elevated expression levels of necroptotic markers and medium creatine kinase (CK), which could be a result of sarcolemmal damage. Most importantly, increased lipin1 expression levels in differentiated myoblasts from mdx:lipin1Tg/0 mice substantially inhibited the elevation of necroptotic markers and medium CK levels. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our data suggest that lipin1 is a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of dystrophic muscles.

RESUMO

Robotic assisted partial nephrectomy is the gold standard treatment for small renal masses. Ureteric stricture is a rare but serious complication that significantly increase the morbidity and worsens the quality of life for cancer patients. Definitive treatment such as surgical reconstruction or ureteroureterostomy is not always feasible as in patients with significant morbidity or high-risk patients. Other options include ureteric double J stent or nephrostomy tube placement with regular exchange. We present a case of iatrogenic upper ureteric stricture post robotic assisted partial nephrectomy for right renal mass that was discovered on postoperative follow up imaging treated with metallic ureteral stent (Memokath) as reconstructive surgery was difficult due to proximity to the tumor bed. We found that if reconstructive surgery is not feasible, metallic ureteral stents has good durability, better quality of life than ureteric double stents for the management of ureteric stricture.

RESUMO

The study examined the impact of adding oregano extract and/or rosemary to broiler diets to counteract the growth inhibition caused by heat stress (HS). It also investigated the effects on the activity of digestive enzymes, microbiological composition, and the expression of antioxidant and tight junction-related proteins. Three hundred- and fifty-day-old male broilers, were randomly assigned to 7 treatment groups, with each group comprising 5 replicates, and each replicate containing 10 chicks in a cage. The diets were: 1) a basal diet, 2) a diet supplemented with 50 mg/kg of rosemary, 3) a diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg of rosemary, 4) a diet supplemented with 50 mg/kg of oregano, 5) a diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg of oregano, 6) a combination diet containing 50 mg/kg each of rosemary and oregano, and 7) a combination diet containing 100 mg/kg each of rosemary and oregano. Dietary oregano extract enhanced the growth and feed utilization of heat-stressed birds, especially at a concentration of 50 mg/kg. Moreover, oregano extract improved jejunal protease and amylase activities. The extracts of rosemary and oregano significantly reduced IgG and IgM levels. Dietary 50 mg oregano extract significantly upregulated intestinal integrity-related genes including jejunal CLDNI, ZO-1, ZO-2, and MUC2. Dietary 50 mg oregano extract significantly downregulated hepatic NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) and nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS2) expressions. Our results suggest that incorporating oregano leaf extract into the diet at a concentration of 50 mg/kg improves the growth performance of broilers exposed to heat stress. This improvement could be attributed to enhanced gut health and the modulation of genes associated with oxidative stress and tight junction proteins.

RESUMO

Fexofenadine (FEX) is a non-sedating antihistamine commonly used for the treatment of allergic conditions such as seasonal rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria. This study describes the tuning "ON" the intrinsic fluorescence of FEX by switching "OFF" its intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer (PET) through the protonation of the piperidinyl nitrogen atom using sulfuric acid. The resulting fluorescence was utilized as a basis for the development of a highly sensitive microwell spectrofluorimetric assay (MW-SFA) for the one-step determination of FEX in pharmaceutical tablets and plasma. The linear range of the assay was 10-500 ng ml-1, and its limit of quantitation was 25.9 ng ml-1. The proposed MW-SFA was successfully applied to analyze FEX in pharmaceutical tablets and plasma samples, demonstrating good accuracy and precision. The greenness of the assay was confirmed using three metric assessment tools. In conclusion, the MW-SFA is a straightforward, single-step analysis that requires no experimental adjustments. It offers high sensitivity, efficient sample processing, and environmental sustainability. This assay is highly recommended for pharmaceutical quality control and clinical lab use, particularly for measuring FEX levels.

RESUMO

Robotic manipulators are nonlinear systems, multi-input multi-output, highly coupled and complicated whose performance is negatively impacted by external disturbances and parameter un-certainties. Therefore, the controllers designed for such systems must be capable of managing their complexity. The main aim of this study is to tackle the trajectory tracking issue of the three-Link Rigid Robot Manipulator (3-LRRM) based on designing three control structures using a combi-nation Neural Network (NN) with Proportional, Integral and Derivative (PID) actions named Neural Controller Like PIPD (NN-PIPD) controller, Neural Network plus PID (NN + PID) controller NN + PID controller and Elman Neural Network Like PID (ELNN-PID) controller. The parameters of the proposed controllers are adjusted utilizing the Coot Optimization Algorithm (COOA) in order to reduce the Integral Time Square Error (ITSE). A novel objective function for tuning process to produce a controller with minimum value of the chattering in the control signal is proposed. The performance of the proposed controllers is evaluated in terms of disturbance rejection, model uncertainty, fluctuating initial conditions and reference trajectory tracking. According to the simulation results proved that the suggested NN-PIPD controller outperforms all other proposed controller structures for tracking performance, stability, and robustness. As a result of the com-parison analysis the optimal controller was considered to be an NN-PIPD controller for tracking trajectory, rejecting disturbances, and parameter variation with minimizing ITSE of 0.001777.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Antibiotics are targeted to kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria and have no effect on viral agents. Unfortunately, viruses cause about 80% of respiratory tract infections, and up to 75% of antibiotics are prescribed for URTIs. Overuse of antibiotics is linked to a number of issues, including the emergence of antibacterial resistance, an increase in the prevalence of chronic illnesses, a rise in the expense of healthcare services, and the emergence of side effects. This study aimed to assess the awareness of antibiotic misuse for URTIs among adults in the Bisha governorate in 2024. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in the Bisha governorate among the adult population. Data was collected using an online standardized self-administered adapted questionnaire. The questions vary from multiple choice to Likert scale questions, and each question has 2 points. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 26 (IBM SPSS Statistics, Armonk, NY). RESULTS: The response rate was about 85.3% (721/845). The ages of the participants ranged between 18 and 75 years. There were 360 (49.9%) male respondents and 361 (50.1%) female respondents. The study revealed that 83.1% (599) of the participants have poor awareness of antibiotic misuse in URTIs. Knowledge of antibiotic misuse consequences was poor at 66.7% (481). There was a significant difference observed between the residents of Bisha city compared to the residents of Bisha villages in total knowledge level about antibiotic misuse in URTIs (p = 0.030). CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The population of the Bisha governorate has a poor knowledge of antibiotic misuse in URTIs. Therefore, efforts should be made to increase the knowledge and awareness of the general public about the problem.

RESUMO

Introduction: Lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) in cerebral palsy (CP) and other neuromuscular diseases can present with chronic retention that leads to hydronephrosis, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI), and stone formation. Whenever the conservative treatment of LUTD fails for any reason, it is considered to be complicated LUTD, in which a surgical approach is warranted. Cutaneous vesicostomy (CV) is a simple, well-tolerated, and potentially reversible procedure that protects the upper tracts. We describe our experience using CV for this complex population. Materials and methods: Children with CP and other neuromuscular diseases admitted to pediatric long-term care units for palliative care between 2015 and 2019 were included in the study. They present multi-system involvement, polypharmacy, and Gross Motor Function Classification System levels of 4 or 5. We retrospectively studied this population's indications and results of CV. Results: Of the 52 admitted patients, 18 presented LUTD with UTI (n:18; 100%), stones (n:5; 28%), progressive hydroureteronephrosis (n:3; 17%), or stones (n:2; 11%). Conservative initial management (catheterizations, prophylaxis antibiotics) was effective in half the cases. The remaining nine were defined as complicated LUTD and underwent CV. After a mean follow-up of 11.3 months, the follow-up showed improved hydronephrosis in all nine (100%) patients. Recurrent UTIs were no longer seen in eight of nine patients, although three patients required bladder irrigations; bladder stones did not recur after CV; the kidney stones needed further intervention. Revision of the CV was required in two (11%) cases at 12 and 24 months postoperatively due to stoma stenosis. Conclusion: CV is a relatively simple and effective procedure representing a pragmatic solution for managing complicated LUTD in complex long-term institutionalized pediatric palliative care patients with neuropathic bladders.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The global rise in obesity and related health complications has cast a spotlight on the urgent need for initiatives that promote informed dietary decisions. This cross-sectional study investigates the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of university students at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia, regarding menu calorie labeling. The study examines how these variables may affect dietary decisions, body mass index (BMI), and support for proposed legislative measures requiring calorie disclosure on restaurant menus. METHODS: The study included 581 Saudi university students who were 18 years of age or older as a convenience sample. A three-part questionnaire that asked about demographics, anthropometric measurements, and attitudes and behaviors related to calorie counting was completed by the participants. Using the Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS, version 25.0; IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Armonk, NY) program, chi-square, t-tests, and ANOVA tests were used to evaluate the data. Both informed consent and ethical approval were obtained. RESULTS: The study finds that, even while more than half of the participants knew their recommended daily calorie intake and exhibited curiosity about calorie information on menus, this knowledge did not always result in healthy eating habits. Participants' opinions and behaviors regarding calorie labeling were significantly correlated with their BMI levels, indicating the importance of education in promoting nutritional awareness and healthy eating habits. New calorie labeling regulations received higher approval from people who regularly ate out. CONCLUSION: This study emphasizes the necessity of comprehensive nutritional education initiatives to raise calorie knowledge and encourage Saudi Arabian university students to make healthier eating choices. It also emphasizes the possible effects of legislative measures requiring calorie information on menus, particularly among regular diners. However, while evaluating the results, it is important to take into account the study's limitations, including self-reported data and convenience sample. To support menu calorie labeling legislation and inform targeted public health interventions for university students' eating behaviors, more research that takes cultural quirks and regional settings into account is necessary.

RESUMO

Leave against medical advice (LAMA) is defined as 'a decision to leave the hospital before the treating physician recommends discharge', and is associated with higher rates of readmission, longer subsequent hospitalization, and worse health outcomes. In addition to this, they also contribute to poor healthcare resource utilization. We conducted a single-center audit to establish patient demographics and contributing factors of patients leaving against medical advice from our emergency department (ED). We benchmarked our data against locally available clinical policy guidelines. We interrogated our electronic health record system (known as Salamtak®), which is a Cerner-based platform (Cerner Corporation, Kansas City, MO 64138) for patients who signed LAMA from ED from 2018 to 2023. We selected a convenience pilot sample of 120 subjects. Based on a literature review, we identified patient demographics (age, gender, nationality, socioeconomic status, marital status, religion), possible contributing factors (time of attendance, insurance status, length of ED stay), and patient outcomes (reattendances within 1 week and mortality) to evaluate. Based on locally available guidance, we formulated six criteria to audit with a standard set at 100% for each. A team of emergency medicine residents collected data that was anonymized on an Excel spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Corporation. (2018). Basic descriptive statistics were used to collate results. About 93 patients (77.5%) were 16 years and above, and 27 patients (22.5%) were below 16 years. There was a slight preponderance of males (64 patients, 53.3%) than females (56 patients, 46.6%). The majority of LAMA cases presented in the evening and night (97 patients, 80.8%). About 57 (47.5%) patients had an ED length of stay of 3 hours or more. The average ED length of stay for these patients was 3.4 hours. About 73 patients (60.3%) were insured. Out of 120 patients, only 12 (10%) had a mental capacity assessment documented. The commonest reason for signing LAMA was a social reason in 45 (37.5%) cases. In the remaining cases, the causes were a combination of family, financial, waiting, or other/undocumented reasons). When faced with a decision to LAMA, the involvement of a Public Relationship Officer (PRO) was only documented to be consulted in seven (5.8%) cases. About 14 cases were re-attended within 1 week (11.6%) and no mortalities were reported in any of the reattendances. LAMA is a not-so-rare phenomenon often occurring in EDs, and often a cause of trepidation for healthcare workers. Treating this as an aberrant behavior on the part of the patient, or laying the responsibility for this action on the healthcare provider is primitive, counter-productive, and not patient-centric. Familiarity with local guidelines around this contentious area is essential. Revised nomenclature like 'premature discharge' may be less stigmatizing for the patient. Where possible, a harm reduction approach should be used and frontline healthcare workers must be prepared with an escalation plan. In the United Arab Emirates, familiarity with Wadeema's Law as a child protection measure is essential.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION:  During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a global increase in mental health issues, including suicidal behaviors. This study focuses on assessing the impact of the pandemic on the prevalence and characteristics of suicidal behavior at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 580 patients from January 2017 to December 2022, focusing on those aged 18 and above referred for suicide evaluation. Data were collected via chart reviews and analyzed using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS, version 25; IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Armonk, NY). RESULTS: Our study reviewed 580 patient charts, with 555 (95.7%) meeting the inclusion criteria. The majority of participants were in the 18-29 age group (66.7%). We observed an increase in the number of cases undergoing suicide attempt assessment post COVID-19, with 296 incidents (53.3%) from March 2020 to December 2022 (about a year and eight months), compared to 259 incidents (46.7%) from January 2017 to March 2020 (over three years). A significant post-pandemic increase was noted in individuals with secondary education or higher (p = 0.004). No significant changes were found in other demographic variables or in the profiles of individuals with an intention to end life before and after the pandemic. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the nuanced impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on suicidal behavior in Saudi Arabia, revealing an increased demand for suicide assessments, particularly among educated individuals. However, no corresponding increase was observed in the rate of high-intent suicidal cases or other significant variables. The findings underscore the complexity of factors influencing suicidal behavior during the pandemic and the need for targeted mental health interventions. Future research, ideally supported by a national database, is essential for a comprehensive understanding of suicidal behavior in Saudi Arabia.

RESUMO

Background and aims This research investigates COVID-19 awareness among primary school teachers and staff in Bisha City. It aims to enhance safety protocols by examining knowledge, awareness levels, and demographic associations. Despite school reopening, concerns linger. The study promotes informed decision-making, fostering a safer school environment and contributing to the well-being of the educational community. Methods In an institutional-based cross-sectional study among primary school teachers and administrative staff in Bisha City, our research aimed to comprehensively evaluate awareness regarding specific measures for minimizing COVID-19 risks. With a sample size of 348 participants, we employed a robust methodology, including online questionnaires addressing sociodemographic characteristics and knowledge about COVID-19 risks. The data collection period spanned from March 2022 to December 2023, providing a temporal context for responses. A pilot test ensured questionnaire clarity, and efforts were made to enhance reliability and validity, incorporating validated scales and iterative adjustments based on feedback. Non-response or incomplete responses were handled transparently, with sensitivity analyses to assess potential impact. The awareness level was measured using 17 Likert scale questions, and predefined categories (poor, moderate, and good) facilitated result interpretation. Researcher influence was minimized through training and inter-rater reliability checks. Confidentiality and anonymity were rigorously maintained, adhering to ethical considerations. Statistical analyses employed frequency tables, percentages, mean, standard deviations, and the chi-square test. Dissemination included academic publications, reports to the educational directorate, and presentations at conferences. This holistic approach contributes to the robustness and societal impact of our study, offering insights into COVID-19 awareness among educators in Bisha City. Results In this study assessing awareness among teachers and administrative staff in Bisha City regarding COVID-19 risk minimization, data from 348 respondents revealed key bio-demographic characteristics. The majority demonstrated good knowledge of environmental (83%) and personal hygiene risks (84%). The chi-square test indicated no significant associations between bio-demographic factors and awareness levels. Specifically, for age groups, χ²(4, N = 348) = 5.46, p = 0.707; for gender, χ²(1, N = 348) = 1.95, p = 0.744; for educational levels, χ²(4, N = 348) = 2.13, p = 0.995; for residency, χ²(1, N = 348) = 1.11, p = 0.892; and for job types, χ²(3, N = 348) = 8.30, p = 0.404. The absence of significant associations underscores the potential universality of successful awareness campaigns, suggesting that future efforts can maintain an inclusive approach without tailoring messages. These results emphasize the importance of sustained awareness efforts across the diverse demographic spectrum of the educational community. Conclusion This study reveals robust COVID-19 awareness among primary school teachers and staff in Bisha City, with no significant demographic associations. Successful, inclusive awareness campaigns can further enhance safety measures and promote well-being in the educational community.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma (PHEO) is challenging because of the high risk of intraoperative hemodynamic instability (HDI). This study aimed to compare the incidence and risk factors of intraoperative HDI between laparoscopic left adrenalectomy (LLA) and laparoscopic right adrenalectomy (LRA). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed two hundred and seventy-one patients aged > 18 years with unilateral benign PHEO of any size who underwent transperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy at our hospitals between September 2016 and September 2023. Patients were divided into LRA (N = 122) and LLA (N = 149) groups. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to predict intraoperative HDI. In multivariate analysis for the prediction of HDI, right-sided PHEO, PHEO size, preoperative comorbidities, and preoperative systolic blood pressure were included. RESULTS: Intraoperative HDI was significantly higher in the LRA group than in the LLA (27% vs. 9.4%, p < 0.001). In the multivariate regression analysis, right-sided tumours showed a higher risk of intraoperative HDI (odds ratio [OR] 5.625, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.147-27.577, p = 0.033). The tumor size (OR 11.019, 95% CI 3.996-30.38, p < 0.001), presence of preoperative comorbidities [diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and coronary heart disease] (OR 7.918, 95% CI 1.323-47.412, p = 0.023), and preoperative systolic blood pressure (OR 1.265, 95% CI 1.07-1.495, p = 0.006) were associated with a higher risk of HDI in both LRA and LLA, with no superiority of one side over the other. CONCLUSION: LRA was associated with a significantly higher intraoperative HDI than LLA. Right-sided PHEO was a risk factor for intraoperative HDI.

RESUMO

Piperacillin (PIP) and tazobactam (TAZ) are broad-spectrum beta-lactam antimicrobial agents, which are frequently co-prescribed in intensive care units (ICUs) worldwide. Ibuprofen (IBU) is a potent pain killer which is commonly co-prescribed with PIP and TAZ postoperatively. The combination therapy of PIP, TAZ, and IBU has been administered commonly after surgical procedures to combat aerobic and anaerobic microbes and exert anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. This study describes, for the first time, the development of a new capillary electrophoresis (CE) method with a photodiode array detector for the simultaneous determination of PIP, TAZ, and IBU in plasma samples. The experimental factors affecting the elution of analytes were carefully optimized. The final analysis was achieved using a fused silica capillary (58 cm effective length and 75 µm ID) and a background electrolyte solution containing a methanol/borax buffer solution (15 mM and pH 9.3) in a ratio of (10 : 90 v/v) with a driving voltage of 30 kV and detection at 210 nm. The relationship between the peak area and concentration was linear from 1 to 200 µg mL-1 for both PIP and TAZ and from 3 to 200 µg mL-1 for TAZ. The method used was thoroughly validated in accordance with the validation requirements set out by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for bio-analytical processes. The proposed CE method was employed to conduct pharmacokinetic and bioavailability studies of the drugs in rat models. The pharmacokinetic results revealed that there is a significant impact upon prescribing this combination concurrently when compared to their single administration. To illustrate, the time required to reach their maximum concentrations (T max) was increased by 0.25 h for both PIP and TAZ, whereas it was increased by 0.5 for IBU. When it comes to their maximum concentration (C max), it was increased by 13.7%, 55.5%, and 44% for PIP, TAZ, and IBU, respectively. Furthermore, the bioavailabilities of PIP, TAZ, and IBU were significantly increased by 55.4%, 19.7%, and 35.6%, respectively. These findings require caution when these drugs are co-prescribed as there is a noticeable augmentation in their therapeutic impacts. Additionally, the greenness of the proposed method was assessed by three metric tools. In conclusion, the method is a valuable tool for further studies on drug-drug interaction in humans.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Artificial intelligence (AI) holds the promise to revolutionize the field of medicine and enhance the well-being of countless patients. Its capabilities span various areas, including disease prevention, accurate diagnosis, and the development of innovative treatments. Moreover, AI has the potential to streamline health-care delivery and lower expenses. The community should be aware of the potential applications of AI in health care, so that they can advocate for its development and adoption. Hence, the objective of this study is to assess the community's perspectives regarding the utilization of AI in health care. METHODS: A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted in Saudi Arabia during the period of June to October 2023. The questionnaire was distributed to people on various social media platforms using a convenience sampling method. The collected data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. RESULTS: The study included 771 individuals, with 42.5% having a positive outlook on the use of AI in health care, 31.8% having a neutral view, and 7.5% having a negative view. The only factor associated with a positive opinion was regional differences (P = 0.006). Moreover, participants who used medical apps or programs (P = 0.026), wearables (P = 0.027), felt more confident in using technology (P < 0.001), enjoyed using technology (P < 0.001), found it easier to familiarize themselves with new devices or programs (P < 0.001), and had more knowledge about AI (P < 0.001) had more positive opinions regarding the use of AI in health care. CONCLUSIONS: The study found that most Saudis, especially those who were familiar with the use of technology, support the use of AI in health care, with a positive or neutral view. Yet, targeted campaigns in certain regions are needed to educate the entire community about AI's potential benefits.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers (PUs) are a common global problem. They affect health-care costs and patient health because of increased morbidity and mortality rates. Critically ill patients are more prone to acquiring PUs than other patients. As the prevalence of PUs is high in Saudi Arabia, more attention is required for PU prevention. Nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward PU prevention are crucial. AIMS: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of nursing students regarding PU prevention evidence-based guidelines. SETTING AND DESIGN: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among nursing students at Jazan University. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected using an electronic questionnaire. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Data were entered, coded, and analyzed using the SPSS version 23. RESULTS: A total of 378 participants were included. The mean age was 22.4 ± 3.4 years, and the mean knowledge score was 7.6 ± 2.64 (range = 0-16). Of the participants, 365 (96.6%) and 13 (3.4%) were considered to have poor and good knowledge about PUs, respectively. Only 72 (19%) correctly identified a lack of oxygen as the cause of PUs; other participants answered malnutrition and moisture. Conversely, 200 (52.9%) participants indicated that recent weight loss below patients' ideal weight increases the risk for PUs. Concerning knowledge about preventive measures, 64 (16.9%) participants correctly answered that a backward sitting position, with both legs resting on a footrest, can reduce the amount of pressure. Meanwhile, 169 (44.7%) participants correctly selected thick air cushion as a means to reduce the magnitude of pressure when patients are sliding down on a chair. Some participants answered that PUs can be reduced if patients are mobilized. Seventy-two (19%) participants indicated that patients laying on a visco-elastic foam mattress should be repositioned every 2 h to reduce the duration of pressure. Age, year of education, training experience, and department were not significantly associated with knowledge about PUs (P = 0.333, P = 0.370, P = 0.700, and P = 0.810, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The general knowledge and attitudes toward PUs of the nursing students at Jazan University were poor. Nevertheless, they had an average knowledge level regarding PU prevention. Age and training experience were not significantly associated with knowledge about PUs.

The intensive adoption of ChatGPT by university students for learning has encouraged many scholars to test the variables that impact on their use of such AI in their learning. This study adds to the growing body of studies, especially in relation to the moderating role of students' gender and their study discipline in their acceptance and usage of ChatGPT in their learning process. This study expanded the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) by integrating gender as well as study disciplines as moderators. The study collected responses from students in Saudi universities with different study disciplines and of different genders. The results of a structural model using Smart PLS showed a significant moderating effect of gender on the relationship between performance expectancy and ChatGPT usage. The results confirmed that the impact of performance expectancy in fostering ChatGPT usage was stronger in male than in female students. Moreover, social influence was shown to significantly affect males more than females in relation to ChatGPT usage. In addition, the findings showed that study discipline significantly moderates the link between social influence and ChatGPT usage. In the same vein, social influence significantly influences ChatGPT use in social sciences more than in applied sciences. Hence, the various implications of the study were discussed.

RESUMO

Developing special textiles (for patients in hospitals for example) properties, special antimicrobial and anticancer, was the main objective of the current work. The developed textiles were produced after dyeing by the novel formula of natural (non-environmental toxic) pigments (melanin amended by microbial-AgNPs). Streptomyces torulosus isolate OSh10 with accession number KX753680.1 was selected as a superior producer for brown natural pigment. By optimization processes, some different pigment colors were observed after growing the tested strain on the 3 media. Dextrose and malt extract enhanced the bacteria to produce a reddish-black color. However, glycerol as the main carbon source and NaNO3 and asparagine as a nitrogen source were noted as the best for the production of brown pigment. In another case, starch as a polysaccharide was the best carbon for the production of deep green pigment. Peptone and NaNO3 are the best nitrogen sources for the production of deep green pigment. Microbial-AgNPs were produced by Fusarium oxysporum with a size of 7-21 nm, and the shape was spherical. These nanoparticles were used to produce pigments-nanocomposite to improve their promising properties. The antimicrobial of nanoparticles and textiles dyeing by nanocomposites was recorded against multidrug-resistant pathogens. The new nanocomposite improved pigments' dyeing action and textile properties. The produced textiles had anticancer activity against skin cancer cells with non-cytotoxicity detectable action against normal skin cells. The obtained results indicate to application of these textiles in hospital patients' clothes.
