RESUMO

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) significantly improves cardiovascular outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). International guidelines vary in the minimum recommended frequency of supervised exercise from 1 to 3 sessions per week. This is the first study in the Middle East and North African regions assessing the impact of 2 versus 3 days/week of supervised exercise on peak exercise capacity in patients with CAD. Single-center retrospective cohort study involving 362 patients enrolled in the only CR center in the State of Qatar. Only high-quality data was included by strict evaluation of compliance to the exercise intervention. Fifty patients who underwent a symptom-limited exercise test before and after CR were included (31 patients on 2 days/week, 19 on 3 days/week). No significant differences were observed in baseline characteristics between groups. Exercise intervention differed significantly between groups in exercise training frequency (2 days/week: 1.97 ± 0.2 vs. 3 days/week: 2.7 ± 0.3; p < 0.00). Peak exercise capacity as peak metabolic equivalents of task (MET) significantly increased in both groups (2 days/week: Pre 8.3 ± 2.4 vs. Post 9.4 ± 2.9, p-value 0.00; 3 days/week: Pre 7.4 ± 1.6 vs. Post 8.4 ± 2.0, p-value 0.00). No significant difference was observed between groups for change in Peak Exercise Capacity (2 days/week 1.1 ± 1.1 vs. 3 days/week 1.0 ± 0.9, p = 0.87). When the total number of exercise sessions is equal, supervised exercise frequencies of 2 and 3 days/week may significantly and equally improve peak exercise capacity in patients with CAD.

This study investigates the differential responses of two maize genotypes, SC180 and SC168, to salt stress, aiming to elucidate the mechanisms underlying salinity tolerance and identify traits associated with improved stress resilience. Salinity stress, imposed by 150 mM NaCl, adversely affected various growth parameters in both genotypes. SC180 exhibited a more pronounced reduction in shoot length (13.6%) and root length (13.6%) compared to SC168, which showed minimal reductions (3.0% and 2.3%, respectively). Additionally, dry weight losses in SC180's leaves, stems, and roots were significantly greater than those in SC168. Under salinity stress, both genotypes accumulated Na+ in all organs, with SC168 showing higher Na + concentrations. However, K+ levels decreased more significantly in SC180's leaves than in SC168's. The study also assessed physiological responses, noting that SC180 experienced a substantial reduction in relative water content (RWC) in leaves (22.7%), while SC168's RWC remained relatively stable (5.15%). Proline accumulation, a marker for osmotic adjustment, increased 2.3-fold in SC168 compared onefold in SC180. Oxidative stress indicators, such as electrolyte leakage and hydrogen peroxide levels, were elevated in both genotypes under salt stress, with SC180 showing higher increases (48.5% and 48.7%, respectively) than SC168 (35.25% and 22.0%). Moreover, antioxidant enzymes (APX, CAT, POD, SOD, GR) activities were significantly enhanced in SC168 under salinity stress, whereas SC180 showed no significant changes in these activities. Stress indices, used to quantify and compare salinity tolerance, consistently ranked SC168 as more tolerant (average rank = 1.08) compared to SC180 (average rank = 1.92). Correlation analyses further confirmed that SC168's superior tolerance was associated with better Na + regulation, maintenance of K+ levels, and a robust antioxidant defense system. In conclusion, SC168 demonstrated greater resilience to salinity stress, attributed to its efficient ion regulation, stable water status, enhanced osmotic adjustment, and strong antioxidant response. These findings provide valuable insights for breeding and developing salinity-tolerant maize varieties.

The advent of robotic bronchoscopy coupled with electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (EMN) and shape-sensing technology have increased diagnostic yields for peripheral pulmonary nodules compared to traditional bronchoscopy. Yet, diagnostic yields from these bronchoscopic platforms still fall short of where they should be. This shortfall is in large part due to a lack of advanced imaging during peripheral bronchoscopy and computed tomography (CT)-to-body divergence (CTBD). Digital lung tomosynthesis (DLT) is an advanced imaging modality that helps overcome CTBD during bronchoscopic biopsies of lung nodules. DLT is a quasi-3D imaging technique, which reconstructs tomographic images of the lung from a series of 2D fluoroscopic projection images. These images can be acquired either using a digital flat panel fluoroscopy machine or a fluoroscopy machine with a more traditional image-intensifier present in most standard bronchoscopy suites. This review aims to explain the mechanisms of both CTBD and DLT to help diagnose early-stage lung cancer more effectively.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is a highly infectious plant virus that affects a wide variety of plants and reduces crop yields around the world. Here, we assessed the effectiveness of using Ammi visnaga aqueous seed extract to synthesize silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) and their potential to combat TMV. Different techniques were used to characterize Ag-NPs, such as scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). RESULTS: TEM demonstrated that the synthesized Ag-NPs had a spherical form with an average size of 23-30 nm and a zeta potential value of -15.9 mV, while FTIR revealed various functional groups involved in Ag-NP stability and capping. Interestingly, the Pre-treatment of tobacco plants (protective treatment) with Ag-NPs at 100-500 µg/mL significantly suppressed viral symptoms, while the Post-treatment (curative treatment) delayed their appearance. Furthermore, protective and curative treatments significantly increased chlorophyll a and b, total flavonoids, total soluble carbohydrates, and antioxidant enzymes activity (PPO, POX and CAT). Simultaneously, the application of Ag-NPs resulted in a decrease in levels of oxidative stress markers (H2O2 and MDA). The RT-qPCR results and volcano plot analysis showed that the Ag-NPs treatments trigger and regulate the transcription of ten defense-related genes (SbWRKY-1, SbWRKY-2, JERF-3, GST-1, POD, PR-1, PR-2, PR-12, PAL-1, and HQT-1). The heatmap revealed that GST-1, the primary gene involved in anthocyanidin production, was consistently the most expressed gene across all treatments throughout the study. Analysis of the gene co-expression network revealed that SbWRKY-19 was the most central gene among the studied genes, followed by PR-12 and PR-2. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the reported antiviral properties (protective and/or curative) of biosynthesized Ag-NPs against TMV lead us to recommend using Ag-NPs as a simple, stable, and eco-friendly agent in developing pest management programs against plant viral infections.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: We will describe the treatment of patients with subglottic and tracheal stenosis using instruments and techniques utilized by otolaryngologists and interventional pulmonologists (IP), with a focus on IP-favored approaches that may be less familiar to otolaryngologists. We will present two cases that were treated cooperatively by otolaryngology and IP and will highlight the advantages of certain techniques. STUDY DESIGN: Case series METHODS: This is a case-based presentation highlighting procedures done cooperatively by otolaryngology and IP. Instruments and techniques typically utilized by each specialty will be presented, including rigid and flexible bronchoscopy, laser, balloon dilation, medical adjuncts, fiberoptic electrocautery, fiberoptic cryoablation, and fiberoptic argon plasma coagulation. Patient outcomes for these techniques will also be discussed based on the current literature. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: A dichotomy exists in the approaches typically utilized by otolaryngology and IP to address laryngotracheal stenosis. Our IP colleagues utilize techniques via a flexible bronchoscope that are often not considered in a typical otolaryngology practice. We discussed these techniques to educate otolaryngologists who may be looking to contribute to their armamentarium, as current literature suggests promising patient outcomes. Ultimately, a team approach to these often-complex patients can result in excellent outcomes.

RESUMO

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most frequent liver cancer, which account for more than 90 % of all liver cancer cases. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer globally and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in men. The availability of competent HCC preclinical models is fundamental to the success of mechanistic studies, molecular target identification, and drug testing. However, there are challenges associated with the use of these models. In this review, we provided updates on various cell lines, animals, and human HCC models, their specific preclinic use and associated potential challenges. Overall, the understanding of the merits and demerits of a particular HCC model will improve model selection for various preclinical studies.

Pancreaticopleural fistula (PPF) is a rare complication of chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic pseudocyst. It can present as recurrent pleural effusions and can be difficult to diagnose and treat. We present the case of a 37-year-old male with a history of chronic idiopathic pancreatitis complicated by a pseudocyst who came in with progressive dyspnea, cough, and pleuritic chest pain. The chest X-ray on presentation showed near-complete opacification of the left hemithorax, suggesting a large pleural effusion. Upon thoracentesis, black-bloody fluid was drained, and the pleural fluid analysis was consistent with an exudate with significantly elevated levels of amylase, lipase, and bilirubin. Cytology revealed abundant lipofuscin-laden macrophages, suggesting an intra-abdominal source of the accumulated fluid. A post-drainage CT of the chest showed the resolution of the pleural effusion and an interval decrease in the pancreatic pseudocyst size, indicating a fistulous connection to the pleural space. An endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) was performed with efforts to perform cystogastrostomy aspiration that was hindered by the interference of splenic vasculature obstructing the needle's path. The patient was transferred to another facility for definitive treatment with surgical pancreatectomy and auto islet cell transplant. This case underscores the importance of considering PPF as a possible diagnosis, especially in cases of recurrent pleural effusions and a history of pancreatitis and pancreatic pseudocyst. It also emphasizes the significance of EUS as the preferred modality for pseudocyst evaluation and its potential for minimally invasive treatment.

Organic-inorganic hybrid light-emitting devices have garnered significant attention in the last few years due to their potential. These devices integrate the superior electron mobility of inorganic semiconductors with the remarkable optoelectronic characteristics of organic semiconductors. The inquiry focused on analyzing the optical and electrical properties of a light-emitting heterojunction that combines p-type GaN with organic materials (PEDOT, PSS, and PMMA). This heterojunction is an organic-inorganic hybrid. The procedure entailed utilizing a spin-coating technique to apply a layer of either poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or a mixture of PMMA and poly(3,4ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) onto an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate. Subsequently, different Nd:YAG laser pulses (200, 250, and 300 pulses) were used to administer a GaN inorganic layer onto the prepared organic layer using a pulsed laser deposition approach. Subsequently, the thermal evaporation technique was employed to deposit an aluminum electrode on the top of the organic and inorganic layers, while laser pulses were fine-tuned for optimal performance. The Hall effect investigation verifies the p-type conductivity of the GaN material. The electroluminescence studies confirmed the production of blue light by the GaN-based devices throughout a range of voltage situations, spanning from 45 to 72 V.

Background Varicose veins are defined as visibly swollen and twisted veins, surrounded sometimes by patches of flooded capillaries. Varicose veins are a relatively common condition. For many people, they are a family trait. Women are at least twice as likely as men to develop them. Aim This study aims to assess the public knowledge and awareness of varicose veins in Al-Qunfudah, Saudi Arabia. Methods A correlational cross-sectional study was conducted among a sample of people in Al-Qunfudah, Saudi Arabia. An online questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collection sheet included socioeconomic-demographic information. Varicose vein knowledge was assessed in the second portion using three-point ratings. The final section had multiple-choice questions about risk factors and complications, including symptoms, diagnostic techniques, and risk factors for varicose veins. Results Participants were included in the study after excluding individuals aged less than 18 years old, with a majority being males (319; 79.9%). Regarding age distribution, participants aged 36-45 years constituted the largest group (132; 33.1%). Out of 399 participants, 369 (92.5%) had not been diagnosed with varicose veins. Most participants (271, 67.9%) had heard of varicose veins, with the primary sources of information being someone they knew with varicose veins (106, 39.11%). Family history was considered an important factor by 141 (35.3%) of respondents while 217 (54.4%) were unsure. Female gender and old age showed significantly higher knowledge levels (p< 0.05). Conclusion The current study concluded that while there was a fair level of public awareness of varicose veins in general, there was a noticeable lack of knowledge regarding clinical symptoms and diagnostic techniques. Younger females demonstrated noticeably greater awareness and comprehension of the illness.

Wheat is one of the most important cereal crops in Egypt and all over the world. Its productivity is adversely affected by drought due to deficient irrigation to provide nutrients required for plant growth. In a field experiment, silicon foliar applications at concentrations of 0, 200, and 400 mg L-1 were performed at different irrigation rates ranging from 1000 to 4000 m3 ha-1 to assess water irrigation productivity and wheat crop yield in a calcareous soil under arid climate conditions. Increased irrigation rates led to a significant increase in soil nutrient dynamics, as well as in the number and weight of grains per spike, leaf area index, grain yield, straw yield, and biological yield, with the exception of the weight of 1000 grains. Spraying with sodium silicate had a significant impact on grain yield and harvest index but did not significantly impact the other traits. Furthermore, the interaction between irrigation and silicate application rates showed significance only for grain yield, the number of spikes/m2, and the harvest index. Applying three times irrigation could produce the highest nutrient retention, wheat yield, and water irrigation productivity. No significance was observed between 3000 m3 ha-1 and 4000 m3 ha-1 irrigation, indicating a saving of 25% of applied irrigation water. It can be concluded that applying irrigation at 3000 m3 ha-1 could be a supplemental irrigation strategy. High wheat grain yield can be achieved under deficit irrigation (3000 m3 ha-1) on the northwestern coast of Egypt with an arid climate by spraying crops with sodium silicate at a rate of 400 mg L-1.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is recommended for all patients with stable angina (SA) as an effective treatment. Hemoglobin (Hgb) levels predict exercise performance and may affect symptom threshold in SA patients. A multidisciplinary CR intervention was individually tailored for a 72-year-old patient with a diagnosis of SA, low Hgb (<10 g/dL), and typical chest pain at light-to-moderate exercise (<5 metabolic equivalent task), who was stratified as at high risk for cardiac events during exercise. Two symptom-limited exercise tests were performed before and after 36 sessions of supervised exercise training producing near-optimal accumulated total volume load and chronic training load. In this case report, we show that an individually tailored CR intervention in a patient with SA and low Hgb is feasible, effective, and safe at reducing the burden of symptoms while increasing peak exercise capacity, health-related quality of life, and physical activity engagement.

In this study, we developed a novel nanocomposite by synthesizing zinc (ZnNPs), copper (CuNPs), and silver (AgNPs) nanoparticles using olive leaf extract and incorporating them into a chitosan polymer. This approach combines the biocompatibility of chitosan with the antimicrobial and anticancer properties of metal nanoparticles, enhanced by the phytochemical richness of olive leaf extract. The significance of our research lies in its potential to offer a biodegradable and stable alternative to conventional antibiotics and cancer treatments, particularly in combating multidrug-resistant bacteria and various cancer types. Comprehensive characterization through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) confirmed the successful synthesis of the nanocomposites, with an average size of ~22.6 nm. Phytochemical analysis highlighted the antioxidant-rich composition of both the olive leaf extract and the nanoparticles themselves. Functionally, the synthesized nanoparticles exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, outperforming traditional antibiotics by inhibiting key resistance genes (ermC, tetX3-q, blaZ, and Ery-msrA). In anticancer assessments, the nanoparticles showed selective cytotoxicity towards cancer cells in a concentration-dependent manner, with CuNPs and AgNPs showing particularly strong anticancer effects, while demonstrating minimal toxicity towards normal cells. ZnNPs were noted for their low cytotoxicity, highlighting the safety profile of these nanoparticles. Further, the nanoparticles induced apoptosis in cancer cells, as evidenced by the modulation of oncogenes (P21, P53, and BCL2), suggesting their therapeutic potential. The findings of our study underscore the versatile applications of these biogenic nanoparticles in developing safer and more effective antimicrobial and anticancer therapies.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections and reproductive tract infections pose significant health risks, particularly among women living in challenging conditions. Unhygienic menstrual practices can exacerbate these risks, impacting physical and psychological well-being. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the association between unhygienic menstrual care and self-reported urinary tract infection/reproductive tract infection symptoms among refugee women. In addition, it explored the association between these symptoms and mental health, specifically depressive symptoms. DESIGN: This study adopted a cross-sectional observational design. METHODS: This study was conducted between January and March 2023, involving 387 reproductive-age refugee women. Data collected included sociodemographic information and urinary tract infection/reproductive tract infection symptoms. In addition, we used the Menstrual Practice Needs Scale to evaluate menstrual hygiene practices and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for depressive symptoms. Statistical analysis was performed using Python version 3.9.12. RESULTS: Of 387 refugee women, 92.25% reported having urinary or reproductive tract infection symptoms in the previous 3 months. Factors like older age (odds ratio = 1.764, 95% confidence interval = 1.083-2.873, p-value = 0.023), lower family income (odds ratio = 0.327, 95% confidence interval = 0.138-0.775, p-value = 0.011), lower educational level (odds ratio = 0.222, 95% confidence interval = 0.068-0.718, p-value = 0.012), and being married (odds ratio = 0.328, 95% confidence interval = 0.188-0.574, p-value < 0.001) were significantly associated with urinary or reproductive tract infection risk. Difficulties obtaining menstrual products and thus reusing them increased the odds of urinary or reproductive tract infection diagnosis (odds ratio = 2.452, 95% confidence interval = 1.497-4.015, p-value < 0.001). Women with urinary or reproductive tract infection symptoms exhibited higher Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scores than those without (12.14 ± 5.87 vs 9.99 ± 5.86, p-value < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: This study highlights a high prevalence of urinary or reproductive tract infection symptoms among refugee women residing in camps in Jordan, which was associated with poor menstrual hygiene practices and depressive symptoms. To reduce the urinary tract infection/reproductive tract infection burden in marginalized communities, public health initiatives should enhance healthcare accessibility, provide reproductive education, and promote holistic well-being practices for refugee women.

The clinical management of bladder cancer continues to present significant challenges. Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy remains the gold standard of treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), but many patients develop recurrence and progression to muscle-invasive disease (MIBC), which is resistant to BCG. This review focuses on the immune mechanisms mobilized by BCG in bladder cancer tumor microenvironments (TME), mechanisms of BCG resistance, the dual role of the BCG-triggered NFkB/TNFα/PGE2 axis in the regulation of anti-tumor and tumor-promoting aspects of inflammation, and emerging strategies to modulate their balance. A better understanding of BCG resistance will help develop new treatments and predictive biomarkers, paving the way for improved clinical outcomes in bladder cancer patients.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related multi phenotypic sinonasal carcinoma (HMSC) is a recently described tumor subtype with an unknown prognosis, often misdiagnosed with other sinonasal carcinomas, and associated with high-risk HPV (HR-HPV). The present study aimed to evaluate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), Bcl-2-associated X protein (BAX), epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR), ProExTMC, and human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) and assess their association with survival and clinicopathological characteristics. Methods: Between 2017 and 2022, 40 HMSC patients underwent surgical resection at the School of Medicine, Zagazig University Hospitals (Zagazig, Egypt). Tissue samples were examined for the presence of HR-HPV; absence of myeloblastosis (MYB), MYB proto-oncogene like 1 (MYBL1), and nuclear factor I/B (NFIB) fusions and the presence of myoepithelial proteins (calponin, S100, SMA), squamous differentiation markers (p63, p40, calponin), VEGF, BAX, ProExTMC, and hTERT by immunohistochemistry. All patients were followed up for about 54 months until death or the last known survival data. Data were analyzed using the Chi square test and Kaplan-Meier method. Results: The expression of VEGF, hTERT, and ProExTMC was significantly associated with age, advanced tumor stages, lymph node metastasis, tumor size, mortality, relapse, poor disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS) (P<0.001). BAX expression was significantly associated with tumor size, age, poor DFS, and relapse (P=0.01, P<0.001, P=0.035, and P=0.002, respectively). Conclusion: HMSC is strongly associated with HR-HPV. The expression of VEGF, EGFR, BAX, hTERT, and ProExTMC is associated with aggressive malignant behavior, poor survival, and poor prognosis, making them novel prognostic biomarkers for targeted therapeutics in HMSC.

Radioactive iodine therapy and posttreatment scanning are essential components of differentiated thyroid carcinoma treatment and detection of metastatic disease. False-positive results can be seen on an I-131 scan and are important for clinicians to be aware of. Here, we present a case of a 33-year-old female with follicular thyroid carcinoma who was noted to have an area of moderate uptake in the chest on a whole-body scan following remnant ablation with 30 mCi of I-131 (1.11GBq) concerning for a metastatic hilar lymph node. This was determined to be a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst on surgical pathology. It has been previously proposed that the expression of sodium iodide symporters in some bronchogenic cysts could be the mechanism by which iodine uptake is seen within them. We were able to demonstrate positive immunohistochemical staining for both sodium iodide symporter and the associated paired box gene 8 transcription factor in the cyst sample, which supports the proposed theory.

Addressing industrial wastewater treatment challenges and removing hazardous organic pollutants, such as carcinogenic methyl orange (MO) and azo dyes, is a pressing concern. This study explores the use of the Zea mays envelope, an agricultural waste product, to produce Z. mays activated carbon (ZMAC) through the chemical activation of maize envelopes with phosphoric acid. Various analytical techniques, including FTIR, XRD, TGA, DSC, and SEM, characterize ZMAC. Results show that ZMAC exhibits an impressive monolayer adsorption capacity of 66.2 mg/g for MO. The Langmuir isotherm model fits the experimental data well, indicating monolayer coverage of the MO on the ZMAC surface. The pH-sensitive adsorption process demonstrates an optimal removal efficiency at pH 4. ZMAC follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and diffusion rate constant analysis identifies three consecutive stages in the adsorption process. Moreover, the uptake of MO ions by ZMAC is identified as an exothermic and spontaneous process. Reusability tests demonstrate efficient regeneration of ZMAC up to five times with 1 mL of 2 M HNO3 in each cycle, without sorbent mass loss. Thermodynamic analysis shows an increase in the uptake capacity from 66.2 to 73.2 mg/g with temperature elevation. This study offers practical solutions for industrial wastewater treatment challenges, providing an environmentally sustainable and effective approach to mitigate the risks associated with hazardous organic pollutants.

Plant fungal diseases impose a formidable challenge for global agricultural productivity, a meticulous examination of host-pathogen interactions. In this intricate study, an exhaustive investigation was conducted on infected tomatoes obtained from Egyptian fields, leading to the precise molecular identification of the fungal isolate as Alternaria alternata (OP881811), and the isolate showed high identity with Chinese isolates (ON973896 and ON790502). Subsequently, fourteen diverse tomato cultivars; Cv Ferment, Cv 103, Cv Damber, Cv 186, Cv 4094, Cv Angham, Cv N 17, Cv Gesma, Cv 010, Cv branch, cv 2020, Cv 023, Cv Gana and Cv 380 were meticulously assessed to discern their susceptibility levels upon inoculation with Alternaria alternata. Thorough scrutiny of disease symptom manifestation and the extent of tomato leaf damage ensued, enabling a comprehensive evaluation of cultivar responses. Results unveiled a spectrum of plant susceptibility, with three cultivars exhibiting heightened vulnerability (Cv Ferment, Cv 103 and Cv Damber), five cultivars displaying moderate susceptibility (Cv 186, Cv 4094, Cv Angham, Cv N 17 and Cv Gesma), and six cultivars demonstrating remarkable resilience to the pathogen (Cv 010, Cv branch, cv, 2020; Cv 023, Cv Gana and Cv 380). In order to gain a thorough understanding of the underlying physiological patterns indicative of plant resistance against A. alternata, an in-depth exploration of polyphenols, flavonoids, and antioxidant enzymes ensued. These key indicators were closely examined, offering valuable insights into the interplay between plant physiology and pathogen response. Robust correlations emerged, with higher contents of these compounds correlating with heightened susceptibility, while lower levels were indicative of enhanced plant tolerance. In tandem with the physiological assessment, a thorough investigation of four pivotal defensive genes (PR5, PPO, PR3, and POX) was undertaken, employing cutting-edge Real-Time PCR technology. Gene expression profiles displayed intriguing variations across the evaluated tomato cultivars, ultimately facilitating the classification of cultivars into distinct groups based on their levels of resistance, moderate susceptibility, or heightened sensitivity. By unravelling the intricate dynamics of plant susceptibility, physiological responses, and patterns of gene expression, this comprehensive study paves the way for targeted strategies to combat plant fungal diseases. The findings contribute valuable insights into host-pathogen interactions and empower agricultural stakeholders with the knowledge required to fortify crop resilience and safeguard global food security.

Background: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is detected in 40% of patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). During latency, EBV induces epigenetic alterations to the host genome and decreases the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins. The present study aimed to evaluate the expression levels of mRNA molecules and the end product of proteins for the JAK/STAT and NF-κB pathways, and their association with clinicopathological and prognostic parameters in patients with EBV-positive and -negative classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL). Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted from 2017 to 2022 at the Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University Hospital (Zagazig, Egypt). Biopsy samples of 64 patients with CHL were divided into EBV-positive and EBV-negative groups. The expression levels of mRNA molecules (JAK2, STAT1, IRF-1, PD-L1, IFN-γ, NF-κB, Bcl-xL, COX-2) and the end product of proteins (PD-L1, Bcl-xL, COX-2) were determined and compared with clinicopathological and prognostic parameters. Data were analyzed using the Chi square test and Kaplan-Meier estimate. Results: EBV-positive CHL patients were significantly associated with positive expression of mRNAs molecules (P<0.001) and the end product of proteins (P<0.001) for the JAK/STAT and NF-κB pathways, B-symptoms (P=0.022), extra-nodal involvement (P=0.017), and advanced stage of CHL (P=0.018). These patients were more susceptible to cancer progression, higher incidence of relapse (P=0.008), poor disease-free survival rate (P=0.013), poor overall survival rate (P=0.028), and higher mortality rate (P=0.015). Conclusion: Through the activation of JAK/STAT and NF-κB signaling pathways, EBV-positive CHL is associated with poor clinicopathological parameters, higher incidence of disease progression, relapse, and poor overall survival.
