RESUMO

This case highlights a primary cutaneous rhabdomyoma presenting as a slowly enlarging subcutaneous nodule on the mentum of an 82-year-old White man with a medical history of two intracranial rhabdomyomas. Although they are rarely syndromic, it is important to note that the most common demographic for presentation of rhabdomyomas includes older males presenting as a subcutaneous nodule on the head, neck, or oral cavity. They are most often seen in isolation but can be multifocal in up to 25% of all cases. Being a rare entity, there is no generally recognized treatment consensus; however, complete surgical excision is recommended to prevent recurrence and morbidity from local tissue destruction.

RESUMO

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer, and solar ultraviolet ray exposure is the most significant risk factor for its development. The plantar foot is infrequently exposed to the sun, thus the presence of BCC on the sole is rare. We report a case of BCC on the sole of the foot and its treatment in the hope to facilitate its detection.

RESUMO

Benign neoplasms of the skin are commonly seen by all physicians. It is vital to distinguish these proliferations from malignant lesions. Despite their benign nature, many of these neoplasms cause aesthetic or symptomatic distress and require removal. Some of these benign neoplasms may serve as markers for internal disease or genetic syndromes. Multiple forms of therapy, including excision, cryotherapy, curettage, laser therapy, and pharmacotherapy, are available. This article discusses the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and recent advances in the management of these benign lesions.

RESUMO

The incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma continues to increase worldwide. It is the deadliest form of skin malignancy. This article focuses on the epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention, and new staging criteria of melanoma. The author delves into standards of treatment and highlights new strategies, including but not limited to noninvasive imaging techniques and immunotherapy.

RESUMO

Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common form of malignancy in humans. The incidence of NMSC continues to increase despite increased awareness and sun-protective measures. If neglected or mismanaged, NMSC can cause significant morbidity and even death. The most common forms of NMSC on the head and neck include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, sebaceous carcinoma, eccrine porocarcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, atypical fibroxanthoma, and microcystic adnexal carcinoma. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment (standard excision, Mohs micrographic surgery, curettage); however, other modalities exist, including radiation, topical immunomodulators, photodynamic therapy, and new systemic medications.

RESUMO

Hypergammaglobulinemic purpura of Waldenström is a rare syndrome that includes recurrent episodic purpura occurring mainly on the lower extremities and dorsum of the feet. The hallmark of this condition is polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia primarily composed of IgG. Although the condition generally is benign, it may herald an underlying connective tissue disease or hematologic malignancy. We report a case of a 47-year-old woman with episodic purpura of 3 years' duration associated with Raynaud phenomenon.
