RESUMO
Purpose: The prevalence of osteoporosis increases as the population ages. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of osteoporosis among the general population ≥ 50 years old in Iran. Methods: Multiple databases including Scopus, WOS, Medline, Embase, and Persian databases (SID and Magiran) were systematically searched to identify relevant research papers. All population-based studies estimating the prevalence of osteoporosis in the Iranian population were included and imported into Endnote software. Two authors independently reviewed the articles. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the risk of bias. Statistical analysis was performed using Stata software, and a significance level of 0.05 was applied to the analyses. Results: Totally 2117 documents were retrieved from the databases up until October 11, 2022. After reading the full texts, 10 documents were included in the study. Our results indicated that the pooled prevalence of osteoporosis in the femoral neck region was 0.19 (95%CI: 0.12-0.26) and 0.19 (95%CI: 0.13-0.25) for women and men, respectively. Pooled prevalence of spinal osteoporosis was 0.29 (95%CI: 0.21-0.38) among women and 0.16 (95%CI: 0.12-0.19) among men. The total pooled prevalence of osteoporosis was 0.38 (95%CI: 0.29-0.48) for women and 0.25 (95%CI: 0.22-0.29) for men. Conclusion: Our study highlights the elevated prevalence of osteoporosis among individuals aged 50 years and older, with females exhibiting higher rates. Notably, osteoporosis in the femoral neck region demonstrated the lowest prevalence in both sexes. The implementation of comprehensive strategies is imperative to address osteoporosis problems effectively. RESUMO
Symptoms of overactive bladder syndrome (OAB), including urinary incontinence, affect a person's quality of life and cause many personal, social and economic problems. Patients were randomly divided into three groups and received transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (cTTNS) with fixed parameters or with variable parameters (vTTNS) and Solifenacin drug. The main outcomes including quality of life questionnaire and OAB score and other secondary outcomes were evaluated before and after treatment for 6 weeks. ANOVA test did not show any significant difference between the three groups in quality of life score (p=0.672), OAB symptom score (p=0.159) and incontinence severity (p=0.422). The t-test demonstrated that the post treatment average quality of life score, OAB score, and incontinence severity were significantly different when compared with before treatment in all three groups (p < 0.05). All three methods were effective in treating symptoms of OAB. However, based on the clinical symptoms, cTTNS is recommended as a preferred and acceptable and safe strategy for the treatment of OAB in women over 50 years old.
RESUMO
Nasal septal cartilage perforations occur due to the different pathologies. Limited healing ability of cartilage results in remaining defects and further complications. This study sought to assess the efficacy of elastin-gelatin-hyaluronic acid (EGH) scaffolds for regeneration of nasal septal cartilage defects in rabbits. Defects (4 × 7 mm) were created in the nasal septal cartilage of 24 New Zealand rabbits. They were randomly divided into four groups: Group 1 was the control group with no further intervention, Group 2 received EGH scaffolds implanted in the defects, Group 3 received EGH scaffolds seeded with autologous auricular chondrocytes implanted in the defects, and Group 4 received EGH scaffolds seeded with homologous auricular chondrocytes implanted in the defects. After a 4-month healing period, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were obtained from the nasal septal cartilage, followed by histological evaluations of new tissue formation. Maximum regeneration occurred in Group 2, according to CT, and Group 3, according to both T1 and T2 images with 7.68 ± 1.36, 5.44 ± 2.41, and 8.72 ± 3.02 mm2 defect area respectively after healing. The difference in the defect size was statistically significant after healing between the experimental groups. Group 3 showed significantly greater regeneration according to CT scans and T1 and T2 images. The neocartilage formed over the underlying old cartilage with no distinct margin in histological evaluation. The EGH scaffolds have the capability of regeneration of nasal cartilage defects and are able to integrate with the existing cartilage; yet, they present the best results when pre-seeded with autologous chondrocytes.

OBJECTIVES: As Afghans make up the largest group of foreign nationals in Iran, the aim of this study was to assess the proportion of Afghan immigrants among those afflicted by the most prevalent infectious diseases in Iran. METHODS: National and international online scientific databases were searched through November 2013. The reference lists of included studies were also searched. All descriptive studies concerning the most common infectious diseases in Iran, including tuberculosis, multiple-drug-resistant tuberculosis, malaria, cholera, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, leishmaniasis, and hepatitis B were retrieved. The nationality of patients was not considered. The selection of studies and data extraction was performed separately by two authors. Results were reported using a random effect model with a 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: The overall proportion of Afghan immigrants with the aforementioned infectious diseases was 29% (95% CI, 21 to 37). According to a stratified analysis, the proportion of Afghan immigrants afflicted with tuberculosis was (29%), multiple-drug-resistant tuberculosis (56%), malaria (40%), cholera (8%), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (25%), leishmaniasis (7%), and hepatitis B (14%). CONCLUSIONS: It is highly recommended to monitor the health status of the Afghan immigrants when entering Iran, to reduce the spread of communicable diseases, which are viewed as serious in international health regulations.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Several studies have investigated the prevalence of osteoporosis among general population in several parts of Iran. However, the results have been inconsistent. This meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the overall prevalence of osteoporosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: International and national electronic databases were searched until April 2012, including Web of Knowledge, Medline, Scopus, Ovid, ScienceDirect, Science Information Database, IranMedex, MagIran, as well the relevant conference databases. The reference lists of included studies were screened as well. The cross-sectional studies addressing the prevalence of osteoporosis among Iranian general population were retrieved irrespective of age and sex. Bone mineral density (BMD) based on T-score was classified as follows: (a) normal (T-score ≥-1); (b) osteopenia (-2.5SD < T-score <-1SD); (c) osteoporosis (T-score ≤-2.5). Study quality was assessed using the recommended checklist of STROBE. RESULTS: Of 2598 retrieved studies, 31 studies comprising 34,814 people was used for meta-analysis. The overall prevalence of osteoporosis in lumbar spine was 0.17 (95% CI: 0.13, 0.20) and that of osteopenia was 0.35 (95% CI: 0.30, 0.39). The prevalence was higher in older age groups, in women, and in the northern regions of the country, with an increasing trend in recent years. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis indicated that osteoporosis and osteopenia are common problems among Iranian population older than 30 years. Furthermore, increasing trend of the diseases in recent years is promising a critical public health problem in Iran in the near future. However, due to the heterogeneity between the studies' results, further evidence based on a national survey is needed to estimate the exact prevalence of the diseases in the country.
RESUMO
The quality of reporting of cohort studies published in the most prestigious scientific medical journals was investigated to indicate to what extent the items in the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist are addressed. Six top scientific medical journals with high impact factor were selected including New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Lancet, British Medical Journal, Archive of Internal Medicine, and Canadian Medical Association Journal. Ten cohort studies published in 2010 were selected randomly from each journal. The percentage of items in the STROBE checklist that were addressed in each study was investigated. The total percentage of items addressed by these studies was 69.3 (95% confidence interval: 59.6 to 79.0). We concluded that reporting of cohort studies published in the most prestigious scientific medical journals is not clear enough yet. The reporting of other types of observational studies such as case-control and cross-sectional studies particularly those being published in less prestigious journals expected to be much more imprecise.
