BACKGROUND: The optimal strategy during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of aneurysmatic right coronary artery (ARCA) remains uncertain and has never been tested in the acute setting. OBJECTIVES: To compare the in-hospital and long-term outcomes of immediate and staged PCI strategies for ARCA as culprit lesions during acute coronary syndrome (ACS). METHODS: Among 102.376 PCIs performed in 18 European centers, a total of 85 patients presenting with acute coronary syndrome undergoing ARCA PCI were finally included in the analysis. PCI strategy (stenting performed during the immediate vs staged procedure) and pharmacological approach adopted were collected. The primary outcome was procedural success (technical success without in-hospital MACE). RESULTS: The primary outcome occurred in 48.2 % of cases, with no significant differences observed between the immediate and staged PCI groups (50.9 % vs 43.3 %, p = 0.504). Patients in the staged-PCI group had a significantly higher rate of intravenous anticoagulant use (83.3 % vs 48.1 %, p = 0.002), BARC type 3 and 5 bleedings (12.9 % vs 1.9 %, p = 0.037), and longer in-hospital stay (7.40 ± 5.11 vs 9.5 ± 5.25 days, p = 0.049). After multivariate analysis, no independent predictors for procedural success were found in either group. Target lesion failure occurred in 24.1 % of cases without differences between groups at a median follow-up of three years. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients undergoing ARCA PCI in the setting of ACS, immediate or staged PCI were associated with similar in-hospital and long-term outcomes. However, staged PCI was associated with a higher risk of major bleeding events and longer length of stay compared to immediate PCI strategy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Liver involvement is an increasingly recognised complication of common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). Nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH), a subgroup of porto-sinusoidal vascular disorder, and manifestations of portal hypertension (PH) unrelated to cirrhosis are the most common findings. Nonetheless, the evolution of liver disease over time remains unknown. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients followed at the National Institutes of Health with CVID-related liver disease and liver biopsy from 1990 to 2020. Clinical, imaging and histological follow-up were recorded as part of clinical research protocols. RESULTS: Forty patients were included, with a median age of 37.5 years at initial biopsy, 73% presenting with clear evidence of NRH, and a median fibrosis stage of 1. At biopsy, median platelet count was 100 × 109/L, spleen size 19.5 cm, hepatic venous pressure gradient 9.5 mmHg and 37.5% of patients had signs of PH. Cumulative incidence of PH was 65% at 5 years. In a subgroup of 16 patients, a follow-up liver biopsy, performed at a median time of 3 years after the index biopsy, revealed an increase in fibrosis by ≥2 stages in 31% of cases and an increase to an overall stage of 2.2 (p = 0.001). No clinical or histological factors were associated with progression of fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS: In this CVID cohort, NRH is the most common initial histological finding; however, unexpectedly fibrosis progresses over time in a subgroup of patients. A better understanding of the underlying causal process of liver disease CVID might lead to improved outcomes.

On Arctic shelves, benthic food-webs are tightly linked to overlying primary production. In the seasonal ice zone, sympagic (ice-associated) primary production can be a major source of carbon for the benthos on productive inflow shelves. However, the role of sympagic organic matter is less well-understood in food webs of heavily ice-covered, less- productive outflow shelves, such as the northeast Greenland shelf. Highly branched isoprenoid biomarkers (HBIs) were used to track the relative distribution of sympagic and pelagic organic matter in the water column, sediments, and benthic fauna of the northeast Greenland shelf and fjords. Low pelagic HBI presence throughout the study area indicated a generally low production by pelagic diatoms (at the time of sampling). This was reflected in the benthos, as ~90% of their assimilated carbon was estimated to come from sympagic sources, indicating a benthic food-web highly reliant on sympagic production. This reliance was higher in coastal areas than on the open shelf, where the potentially higher pelagic productivity and shallower water on banks likely increased contributions of pelagic organic matter. As declining ice cover and reduced production of fast-sinking ice algae projected for Arctic shelves will likely result in weaker coupling between ice algae and the benthos, with possible consequences for future benthic-community structure and function.

Peptide surfactants (PEPS) are studied to capture and retain rare earth elements (REEs) at air-water interfaces to enable REE separations. Peptide sequences, designed to selectively bind REEs, depend crucially on the position of ligands within their binding loop domain. These ligands form a coordination sphere that wraps and retains the cation. We study variants of lanthanide binding tags (LBTs) designed to complex strongly with Tb3+. The peptide LBT5- (with net charge -5) is known to bind Tb3+ and adsorb with more REE cations than peptide molecules, suggesting that undesired non-specific coulombic interactions occur. Rheological characterization of interfaces of LBT5- and Tb3+ solutions reveal the formation of an interfacial gel. To probe whether this gelation reflects chelation among intact adsorbed LBT5-:Tb3+ complexes or destruction of the binding loop, we study a variant, LBT3-, designed to form net neutral LBT3-:Tb3+ complexes. Solutions of LBT3- and Tb3+ form purely viscous layers in the presence of excess Tb3+, indicating that each peptide binds a single REE in an intact coordination sphere. We introduce the variant RR-LBT3- with net charge -3 and anionic ligands outside of the coordination sphere. We find that such exposed ligands promote interfacial gelation. Thus, a nuanced requirement for interfacial selectivity of PEPS is proposed: that anionic ligands outside of the coordination sphere must be avoided to prevent the non-selective recruitment of REE cations. This view is supported by simulation, including interfacial molecular dynamics simulations, and interfacial metadynamics simulations of the free energy landscape of the binding loop conformational space.

Ever since the ground-breaking isolation of graphene, numerous two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged with 2D metal dihalides gaining significant attention due to their intriguing electrical and magnetic properties. In this study, we introduce an innovative approach via anhydrous solvent-induced recrystallization of bulk powders to obtain crystals of metal dihalides (MX2, with M = Cu, Ni, Co and X = Br, Cl, I), which can be exfoliated to 2D flakes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method using CuBr2 as an example, which forms large layered crystals. We investigate the structural properties of both the bulk and 2D CuBr2 using X-ray diffraction, along with Raman scattering and optical spectroscopy, revealing its quasi-1D chain structure, which translates to distinct emission and scattering characteristics. Furthermore, microultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and electronic transport reveal the electronic properties of CuBr2 flakes, including their valence band structure. We extend our methodology to other metal halides and assess the stability of the metal halide flakes in controlled environments. We show that optical contrast can be used to characterize the flake thicknesses for these materials. Our findings demonstrate the versatility and potential applications of the proposed methodology for preparing and studying 2D metal halide flakes.

There is a need for photochemical tools that allow precise control of protein structure and function with visible light. We focus here on the s-tetrazine moiety, which can be installed at a specific protein site via the reaction between dichlorotetrazine and two adjacent sulfhydryl groups. Tetrazine's compact size enables structural mimicry of native amino acid linkages, such as an intramolecular salt bridge or disulfide bond. In this study, we investigated tetrazine installation in three different proteins, where it was confirmed that the cross-linking reaction is highly efficient in aqueous conditions and site-specific when two cysteines are located proximally: the S-S distance was 4-10 Å. As shown in maltose binding protein, the tetrazine cross-linker can replace an interdomain salt bridge crucial for xenon binding and serve as a visible-light photoswitch to modulate 129Xe NMR contrast. This work highlights the ease of aqueous tetrazine bioconjugation and its applications for protein photoregulation.

CONTEXT: International evidence shows that individuals from low socioeconomic positions (SEPs) consume a greater amount of salt than those from higher SEPs. This health inequality reflects a disproportionate effect of salt-reduction initiatives, and explains a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease among the most vulnerable populations. Assessing this impact can help tailor implementation strategies in the future for the benefit of the whole population. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to systematically review the literature and assess the impact of salt-reduction initiatives on health and behavioral outcomes of adults by SEP. DATA SOURCES: The search strategy was conducted in 6 databases (CINAHL, Scopus, Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Web of Science) using the terms sodium or salt, social class, policy, intervention or campaign. Peer-reviewed articles assessing salt-reduction interventions in adults reporting dietary or behavioral changes on salt consumption measurements by SEP were considered for inclusion. Articles in which salt intake data were not reported by SEP were excluded. DATA EXTRACTION: Two reviewers collected data independently using a predesigned electronic form. The AXIS and RoB 2 tools were used for critical appraisal. DATA ANALYSIS: Eight studies containing data from 111 548 adults were interpreted according to study design following a narrative synthesis approach. RESULTS: Salt-reduction initiatives are effective at reducing the intake of salt and sodium in adults. When reporting the impact of these initiatives, research outcomes are generally not evaluated by SEP, representing a question yet to be explored. CONCLUSION: A small number of articles that focused on the impact of salt-reduction interventions reported salt consumption measurements by SEP, indicating a critical gap in research. The limited evidence suggests potentially greater health benefits to be gained from the implementation of population-wide initiatives in adults of low SEP. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies have consistently demonstrated associations between ultra-processed food and drink (UPFD) consumption and non-communicable diseases. However, there is a lack of data investigating relationships between UPFD intake and intermediate cardiometabolic disease markers. In this study we explored UPFD associations with lipoprotein subclasses. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 1986 middle-to older-aged men and women randomly selected from a large primary care centre. The percentage contribution of UPFDs to total energy intake was calculated for each participant using the NOVA classification. Lipoprotein particle subclass concentrations and size were determined using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Correlation and multivariate-adjusted linear regression analyses were performed to examine UPFD intake relationships with lipoprotein subclasses. RESULTS: In fully adjusted regression models, higher UPFD consumption was associated with reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentrations (ß = -0.024, p = 0.001), large low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (ß = -18.645, p = 0.002), total and medium HDL concentrations (ß = -0.328, p = 0.012; ß = -0.510, p < 0.001), smaller LDL and HDL size (ß = -0.026, p = 0.023; ß = -0.023, p = 0.024), and increased medium very low-density lipoprotein levels (ß = 0.053, p = 0.022), small LDL and HDL concentrations (ß = 20.358, p = 0.02; ß = 0.336, p = 0.011), and higher lipoprotein insulin resistance scores (ß = 0.048, p = 0.012), reflecting greater lipoprotein-related insulin resistance. CONCLUSIONS: Findings from this research suggest that increased intake of UPFDs is associated with a more pro-atherogenic, insulin-resistant metabolic profile in middle-to older-aged adults which may be a potential mechanism underlying reported associations between UPFD consumption and chronic disease risk and mortality.

In cell biology, ribosomal RNA (rRNA) 2'O-methyl (2'-O-Me) is the most prevalent posttranscriptional chemical modification contributing to ribosome heterogeneity. The modification involves a family of small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) and is specified by box C/D snoRNAs (SNORDs). Given the importance of ribosome biogenesis for skeletal muscle growth, we asked if rRNA 2'-O-Me in nascent ribosomes synthesized in response to a growth stimulus is an unrecognized mode of ribosome heterogeneity in muscle. To determine the pattern and dynamics of 2'-O-Me rRNA, we used a sequencing-based profiling method called RiboMeth-seq (RMS). We applied this method to tissue-derived rRNA of skeletal muscle and rRNA specifically from the muscle fiber using an inducible myofiber-specific RiboTag mouse in sedentary and mechanically overloaded conditions. These analyses were complemented by myonuclear-specific small RNA sequencing to profile SNORDs and link the rRNA epitranscriptome to known regulatory elements generated within the muscle fiber. We demonstrate for the first time that mechanical overload of skeletal muscle 1) induces decreased 2'-O-Me at a subset of skeletal muscle rRNA and 2) alters the SNORD profile in isolated myonuclei. These findings point to a transient diversification of the ribosome pool via 2'-O-Me during growth and adaptation in skeletal muscle. These findings suggest changes in ribosome heterogeneity at the 2'-O-Me level during muscle hypertrophy and lay the foundation for studies investigating the functional implications of these newly identified "growth-induced" ribosomes.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) are posttranscriptionally modified by 2'O-methyl (2'-O-Me). This study applied RiboMeth-seq (RMS) to detect changes in 2'-O-Me levels during skeletal muscle hypertrophy, uncovering transient diversification of the ribosome pool in skeletal muscle fibers. This work implies a role for ribosome heterogeneity in skeletal muscle growth and adaptation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is an aggressive salivary malignancy with multiple morphological subtypes. Primary salivary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) requires exclusion of high-grade salivary malignancies and metastatic disease and is considered exceptionally rare. We report six cases of SDC with resemblance to SCC on account of variable, but often extensive, squamous differentiation. METHODS AND RESULTS: A retrospective review (2009-2023) at two institutions of SDC with histological and immunophenotypical evidence of squamous differentiation identified six cases. Medical charts and available glass slides were reviewed. There were five males and one female with a median age of 63 years, with tumours involving the parotid (five of six) and submandibular (one of six) glands. All six tumours showed a conventional SDC component comprising < 5-90% of viable tumour. Squamous differentiation comprised 10-95%+ (> 75% in three of six cases) of total viable tumour, and demonstrated CK5/6, p63 and/or p40 immunoexpression in all cases. A sarcomatoid component, comprising 10-60% of viable tumour, was present in three of six (50%) cases. All tumours were androgen receptor (AR)-positive, but only two of six (33.3%) retained AR immunoreactivity in the squamous component. Metastatic SDC to regional lymph nodes exhibited exclusive squamous differentiation in two of six (33.3%) cases. CONCLUSION: Squamous differentiation, histologically and immunophenotypically, can be extensive in SDC. AR expression may be lost in the squamous component and metastases may demonstrate only squamous differentiation. These findings cast further doubt on the existence of primary salivary SCC. SDC should be considered whenever encountering a carcinoma with squamous differentiation in major salivary glands or within cervical lymph nodes in the setting of a salivary mass.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of overdistraction on interbody cage subsidence. BACKGROUND: Vertebral overdistraction due to the use of large intervertebral cage sizes may increase the risk of postoperative subsidence. METHODS: Patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion between 2016 and 2021 were included. All measurements were performed using lateral cervical radiographs at 3 time points - preoperative, immediate postoperative, and final follow-up >6 months postoperatively. Anterior and posterior distraction were calculated by subtracting the preoperative disc height from the immediate postoperative disc height. Cage subsidence was calculated by subtracting the final follow-up postoperative disc height from the immediate postoperative disc height. Associations between anterior and posterior subsidence and distraction were determined using multivariable linear regression models. The analyses controlled for cage type, cervical level, sex, age, smoking status, and osteopenia. RESULTS: Sixty-eight patients and 125 fused levels were included in the study. Of the 68 fusions, 22 were single-level fusions, 35 were 2-level, and 11 were 3-level. The median final follow-up interval was 368 days (range: 181-1257 d). Anterior disc space subsidence was positively associated with anterior distraction (beta = 0.23; 95% CI: 0.08, 0.38; P = 0.004), and posterior disc space subsidence was positively associated with posterior distraction (beta = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.13, 0.45; P < 0.001). No significant associations between anterior distraction and posterior subsidence (beta = 0.07; 95% CI: -0.06, 0.20; P = 0.270) or posterior distraction and anterior subsidence (beta = 0.06; 95% CI: -0.14, 0.27; P = 0.541) were observed. CONCLUSIONS: We found that overdistraction of the disc space was associated with increased postoperative subsidence after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Surgeons should consider choosing a smaller cage size to avoid overdistraction and minimize postoperative subsidence.

In recent years, there has been a notable shift in cardiovascular clinical practice within cardiology and surgery. The CARDIOXCARDIO study aimed to identify professionals' opinions on working practices and relations between specialties. A survey was simultaneously sent to the 4442 members of the Spanish Society of Cardiovascular and Endovascular Surgery (SECCE) and the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC), yielding 385 valid responses. More than half (59%) of respondents were men, mostly specialists (7.3% residents), and 74.8% worked in the field of cardiology, predominantly in public centers (88.3%). Using a Likert scale ranging from 1 to 5 (worst to best), respondents rated relations between surgery and cardiology with an average of 3.57±0.9 points. Cardiologists rated surgeons with a mean score of 3.83±0.8, while surgeons gave cardiologists a mean score of 3,92±0.72. In addition, respondents provided numerous suggestions for improvement, which are discussed in detail, highlighting certain discrepancies in criteria between specialties. Implementing strategies based on the suggestions of professionals, together with a proactive approach to continuous improvement, could substantially enhance the quality of cardiovascular care in Spain.

Background: Acute cardiac injury (ACI) after COVID-19 has been linked with unfavorable clinical outcomes, but data on the clinical impact of elevated cardiac troponin on discharge during follow-up are scarce. Our objective is to elucidate the clinical outcome of patients with elevated troponin on discharge after surviving a COVID-19 hospitalization. Methods: We conducted an analysis in the prospective registry HOPE-2 (NCT04778020). Only patients discharged alive were selected for analysis, and all-cause death on follow-up was considered as the primary endpoint. As a secondary endpoint, we established any long-term COVID-19 symptoms. HOPE-2 stopped enrolling patients on 31 December 2021, with 9299 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, of which 1805 were deceased during the acute phase. Finally, 2382 patients alive on discharge underwent propensity score matching by relevant baseline variables in a 1:3 fashion, from 56 centers in 8 countries. Results: Patients with elevated troponin experienced significantly higher all-cause death during follow-up (log-rank = 27.23, p < 0.001), and had a higher chance of experiencing long-term COVID-19 cardiovascular symptoms. Specifically, fatigue and dyspnea (57.7% and 62.8%, with p-values of 0.009 and <0.001, respectively) are among the most common. Conclusions: After surviving the acute phase, patients with elevated troponin on discharge present increased mortality and long-term COVID-19 symptoms over time, which is clinically relevant in follow-up visits.

PURPOSE: Metabolic health phenotypes exist across the body mass index spectrum. Diet may be an important modifiable risk factor, yet limited research exists on dietary patterns in this context. We investigated associations between dietary patterns, reflecting dietary quality, healthfulness and inflammatory potential, and metabolic health phenotypes in adults living with and without obesity. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 2,040 middle- to older-aged men and women randomly selected from a large primary care centre. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension score, Healthy Eating Index, Dietary Inflammatory Index, overall, healthful and unhealthful plant-based dietary indices and Nutri-Score were derived from validated food frequency questionnaires. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were used to examine diet score relationships with metabolic health phenotypes (Metabolically Healthy/Unhealthy Obese (MHO/MUO) and Non-Obese (MHNO/MUNO)), defined using three separate metabolic health definitions, each capturing different aspects of metabolic health. RESULTS: In fully adjusted models, higher unhealthful plant-based dietary scores were associated with a lower likelihood of MHO (OR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.93-1.00, p = 0.038) and MHNO (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.95-0.99, p = 0.006). Higher Nutri-Score values were associated with an increased likelihood of MHNO (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.01-1.13, p = 0.033). CONCLUSION: These findings provide evidence that more unhealthful plant-based diets may be linked with unfavourable metabolic health status, irrespective of BMI.

Selective recognition of fructosyl amino acids in water by arylboronic acid-based receptors is a central field of modern supramolecular chemistry that impacts biological and medicinal chemistry. Fructosyl valine (FV) and fructosyl glycyl histidine (FGH) occur as N-terminal moieties of human glycated hemoglobin; therefore, the molecular design of biomimetic receptors is an attractive, but very challenging goal. Herein, we report three novel cationic Zn-terpyridine complexes bearing a fluorescent N-quinolinium nucleus covalently linked to three different isomers of strongly acidified phenylboronic acids (ortho-, 2Zn; meta-, 3Zn and para-, 4Zn) for the optical recognition of FV, FGH and comparative analytes (D-fructose, Gly, Val and His) in pure water at physiological pH. The complexes were designed to act as fluorescent receptors using a cooperative action of boric acid and a metal chelate. Complex 3Zn was found to display the most acidic -B(OH)2 group (pKa = 6.98) and exceptionally tight affinity for FV (K = 1.43 × 105 M-1) with a strong quenching analytical response in the micromolar concentration range. The addition of fructose and the other amino acids only induced moderate optical changes. On the basis of several spectroscopic tools (1H, 11B NMR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence titrations), ESI mass spectrometry, X-ray crystal structure, and DFT calculations, the interaction mode between 3Zn and FV is proposed in a 1 : 1 model through a cooperative two-point recognition involving a sp3 boronate-diol esterification with simultaneous coordination bonding of the carboxylate group of Val to the Zn atom. Fluorescence quenching is attributed to a static complexation photoinduced electron transfer mechanism as evidenced by lifetime experiments. The addition of FGH to 3Zn notably enhanced its emission intensity with micromolar affinity, but with a lower apparent binding constant than that observed for FV. FGH interacts with 3Zn through boronate-diol complexation and coordination of the imidazole ring of His. DFT-optimized structures of complexes 3Zn-FV and 3Zn-FGH show a picture of binding which shows that the Zn-complex has a suitable (B⋯Zn) distance to the two-point recognition with these analytes. Molecular recognition of fructosyl amino acids by transition-metal-based receptors has not been explored until now.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Lipoprotein particle concentrations and size are associated with increased risk for atherosclerosis and premature cardiovascular disease. Certain dietary behaviours may be cardioprotective and public health strategies are needed to guide consumers' dietary choices and help prevent diet-related disease. The Food Standards Agency nutrient profiling system (FSAm-NPS) constitutes the basis of the five-colour front-of-pack Nutri-Score labelling system. No study has examined FSAm-NPS index associations with a wide range of lipoprotein particle subclasses. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 2006 middle-to older-aged men and women randomly selected from a large primary care centre. Individual participant FSAm-NPS dietary scores were derived from validated food frequency questionnaires. Lipoprotein particle subclass concentrations and size were determined using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Multivariate-adjusted linear regression analyses were performed to examine FSAm-NPS relationships with lipoprotein particle subclasses. RESULTS: In fully adjusted models which accounted for multiple testing, higher FSAm-NPS scores, indicating poorer dietary quality, were positively associated with intermediate-density lipoprotein (ß = 0.096, p = 0.005) and small high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (ß = 0.492, p = 0.006) concentrations, a lipoprotein insulin resistance score (ß = 0.063, p = 0.02), reflecting greater lipoprotein-related insulin resistance, and inversely associated with HDL size (ß = -0.030, p = 0.045). CONCLUSIONS: A higher FSAm-NPS score is associated with a less favourable lipoprotein particle subclass profile in middle-to older-aged adults which may be a potential mechanism underlying reported health benefits of a healthy diet according to Nutri-Score rating.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The most common injuries to upper cervical spine are fractures of the second cervical vertebrae. The study aims to evaluate the morphometry of the neural arch of the second cervical vertebrae in the South Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-three second cervical vertebrae of undetermined gender and age without any gross defect were used for the study. The dimensions of neural arch, including superior articular facet, inferior articular facet, pediculoisthmic component, lamina, spinous process, foramen transversarium, and vertebral foramen, were measured by two independent observers using digital vernier caliper accurate to 0.1 mm and the data was analyzed. Descriptive statistics were obtained for the variables. Paired t-test was done to compare the measurements between right and left sides. RESULTS: There was no statistical difference between the right and left sides of the dimensions of superior articular facets, foramen transversarium, and the transverse diameter of inferior articular facet. The anteroposterior diameter of the inferior articular facets was more on the right side (P = 0.009). The width of the pediculoisthmic component in both the superior and inferior aspects was found to be less on the right side than that of the left (P = 0.006 and P = 0.031, respectively). The thickness in the middle one-third of laminae was optimum for bilateral safe screw insertion (≥4.0 mm) in 77% specimens. CONCLUSION: In summary, measurements of the transverse diameter of superior articular facet and thickness of lamina differed significantly from those reported in literature. This should be kept in mind while doing neurosurgery procedures in the Indian population.

BACKGROUND: Medical education can make it difficult for students to take actions to improve their health. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of the university context on self-care behaviors and quality of life. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was used, with surveys being combined to assess self-care and quality of life, with in-depth interviews to explore cultural influences and perceptions. Statistical analysis and qualitative data coding were carried out, with methods being integrated through network analysis. RESULTS: Self-care scores exceeded 50 points, and quality of life scores exceeded 60 points. Medical students' context is shaped by motivations, expectations, skills, and goals that influence identity formation and contribute to the medical profession. CONCLUSIONS: There is a positive connection between self-care practices and quality of life. However, academic stress can potentially disrupt self-care routines. Furthermore, an association between obesity and a decrease in quality of life stands out, which emphasizes the need for health promotion actions.


ANTECEDENTES: La educación médica puede dificultar que los estudiantes realicen acciones para mejorar su salud. OBJETIVO: Evaluar la influencia del contexto universitario en los comportamientos de autocuidado y la calidad de vida. ­. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se empleó un enfoque de métodos mixtos, combinando encuestas para evaluar el autocuidado y la calidad de vida, con entrevistas en profundidad para explorar influencias culturales y percepciones. Se llevaron a cabo análisis estadísticos y codificación de datos cualitativos; los métodos se integraron a través del análisis de redes. RESULTADOS: Las puntuaciones de autocuidado superaron los 50 puntos y las de calidad de vida, los 60 puntos. El contexto de los estudiantes de medicina está moldeado por motivaciones, expectativas, habilidades y metas que influyen en la formación de la identidad y contribuyen a la profesión médica. CONCLUSIONES: Existe una conexión positiva entre prácticas de autocuidado y la calidad de vida; sin embargo, el estrés académico pueden interrumpir potencialmente las rutinas de autocuidado. Además, se destaca la asociación entre la obesidad y la afectación en la calidad de vida, lo que enfatiza la necesidad de acciones de promoción de la salud.
