RESUMO

Despite continuous efforts, eutrophication is still occurring in freshwater and phosphorus (P) is the most important nutrients that drive the eutrophication in rivers and streams. However, little information is available about the distribution of P fractions in river sediment. Here, the sequential extraction approach was used to evaluate the sediment P fractionation and its content in the anthropogenically damaged river Ganga, India. Different sedimentary P fractions viz. exchangeable (Ex-P), aluminum bound (Al-P), iron bound (Fe-P), calcium bound (Ca-P), and organically bound phosphorus (Org-P), were quantified. Significantly higher level of total P was recorded in pre-monsoon season (438.5 ± 95.8 mg/kg), than other [winter (345.7 ± 110.6 mg/kg), post-monsoon (319.2 ± 136.3 mg/kg), and monsoon (288.6 ± 77.3 mg/kg)] seasons. Different P fractions such as Ex-P, Al-P, Fe-P, Ca-P and Org-P varied from 2.88-12.8 mg/kg, 7.64-98.8 mg/kg, 32.2-179.2 mg/kg, 51.97-286.1 mg/kg and 9.3-143.7 mg/kg, respectively, which correspondingly represented 0.5-10.54%, 3.41-20.18%, 17.27-37.82%, 37.35-60.2%, 4.15-25.88% of the Total P with a rank order of P-fractions was Ca-P > Fe-P > Org-P > Al-P > Ex-P. Bio-available P contributes a considerable portion (37.9-46.0%) of total P which may increase the eutrophication to overlying water. Results demonstrate that inorganic P species control the P bio-availability in both time and space. However, an estimated phosphorus pollution index based on sediment total P content showed no ecological risk of phosphorus to Ganga River sediment.

RESUMO

The present study assessed the trophic status of a medium-sized microtidal estuary, Rushikulya, India using a combination of mutimetric trophic indices (TRIX, TRBIX) and a machine learning approach (Random Forest). A total of 108 samples were considered to build a predictive model for chlorophyll a (Chl a) and 17 response water variables by observing two annual periods (2021-2023) at six sampling sites. Mean values of TRIX (5.04 ± 0.72) and TRBIX (0.17 ± 0.08) reflected that the estuary has a moderate degree of eutrophication with 'good' water quality and 'biomass saturated'. However, the threshold of TRIX represents a transition state from 'moderate' to 'high' eutrophic. Random Forest model reflected that no apparent association between Chl a and water turbidity above 30 NTU and eutrophication in the estuary fluctuated mainly due to PO43--P along with electrical conductivity. Linear statistical correlations showed high correlation between Chl a and conductivity and a negative correlation between Chl a and dissolved oxygen, unlike PO43--P.

RESUMO

Various environmental indicators were used to evaluate the water and sediment quality of the Netravathi-Gurupur estuary, India, for trace metals and pesticide pollution. The descended order of studied metal concentrations (µg/L) in the water was Fe (592.71) > Mn (98.35) > Zn (54.69) > Cu (6.64) > Cd (3.24) > Pb (2.38) > Cr (0.82) and in sediment (mg/kg) was Fe (11,396.53) > Mn (100.61) > Cr (75.41) > Zn (20.04) > Cu (12.77) > Pb (3.46) > Cd (0.02). However, pesticide residues were not detected in this estuarine environment. The various metal indexes categorised the water as uncontaminated, whereas contamination factor, enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index, degree of contamination and pollution load index indicated low to moderate sediment contamination. Multivariate statistics showed that the dominance of natural sources of trace metals with little anthropogenic impact. Improvement in water/sediment quality during the study period might be due to COVID-19 imposed lockdown.

RESUMO

Ganga river surface sediment was sampled from 11 locations, which revealed average concentrations (mg/kg) of metals in the order Mn (296.93) > Zn (61.94) > Cr (54.82) > Cu (30.19) > Pb (24.42) > Cd (0.36). Sediment quality guidelines showed metals rarely to occasionally exhibit adverse biological effects. Indices like potential ecological risk, contamination security index, hazard quotients, multiple probable effect concentrations quality, mean probable effects level quotients, mean effects range median quotient suggest nil to a very low level of pollution with low ecological risk. Contamination factor, geo accumulation index, enrichment factor, quantification of contamination revealed that Pb and Cd originated from anthropogenic activities. APCS-MLR model revealed that metals contributed from natural sources (Zn, Mn, Cr; 20.18 %), industrial-agricultural (Cd; 21.35 %); and discharge of paints, Pb batteries, fossil fuel (Pb; 8.49 %). Present findings will serve as an effective guideline for managing and ameliorating pollution in the river system.

RESUMO

Estuaries are the most productive transition ecosystem and phosphorus (P) plays an important role in these ecosystems. Therefore, in the present study, sequential extraction method was used to determine the abundance of five sediment P fractions (calcium (Ca-P), Iron (FeP), aluminum (AlP), exchangeable (Ex-P) and organic (OrgP) bound P) in Netravathi-Gurupur estuary, India. Total phosphorus (TP) content varied from 435-810 mg/kg (non-monsoon) and 258-699 mg/kg (monsoon). Inorganic P was dominant part. Different P fractions followed similar order (Fe-P > Ca-P > Al-P > Org-P > Ex-P) with respect to seasons. FeP was dominant fraction, indicating probable anthropogenic stress. Sediment may act as source of P as bioavailable P constituted 40-69.2 % of TP. Molar ratio of OC to Org-P in sediment indicated terrestrial sources of organic matter. However, the estimated phosphorus pollution index were lower than one except a few cases indicating less ecological risk with respect to sedimentary TP load.

RESUMO

Gel electrophoresis (GE) is the most preferred and adapted technique for the separation and identification of biological molecules like proteins/peptides and nucleic acids from diverse types of organisms. All over the world, researchers, educators, and students aspiring to work in biochemistry and molecular biology disciplines use the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) technique for resolving proteins/nucleic acids for understanding the structure and function of any cell. A simple PAGE technique requires a wide range of chemicals/reagents along with a well-equipped and well-spaced laboratory. We have developed a compact and impeccable mobile electrophoresis kit suitable for any vertically oriented PAGE technique. This comprehensive and portable laboratory set-up provides the complete advantages of safety, cost-efficiency, space management, and utility to the researchers for high-throughput research. All new equipment of the mobile electrophoresis kit is fabricated using inexpensive and off-the-rack components. Overall performance of the mobile kit was verified through a practical exercises executed by high school students with positive outcomes.

RESUMO

The ultimate role of prokaryote (bacteria and archaea), the decomposer of the wetland ecosystem, depends on its community structure and its interaction with the environment. The present study has used three universal prokaryote primers to compare prokaryote community structure and diversity of three distinctly different wetlands. The study results revealed that α-diversity indices and phylogenetic differential abundance patterns did not differ significantly among primers, but they did differ significantly across wetlands. Microbial community composition revealed a distinct pattern for each primer in each wetland. Overall comparison of prokaryote communities in sediments of three wetlands revealed the highest prokaryote richness and diversity in Bhomra (freshwater wetland) followed by Malencho (brackish-water wetland) and East Kolkata wetland (EKW) (sewage-fed wetland). Indicator genus analysis identified 21, 4, and 29 unique indicator genera, having preferential abode for Bhomra, EKW, and Malencho, respectively. Prediction of potential roles of these microbes revealed a preference for sulfate-reducing microbes in Malencho and methanogens in Bhomra. The distinct phylogenetic differential abundance pattern, microbial abode preference, and their potential functional role predict ecosystem variables shaping microbial diversity. The variation in community composition of prokaryotes in response to ecosystem variables can serve as the most sensitive bioindicator of wetland ecosystem assessment and management.

RESUMO

This study aims to examine the spatio-temporal urban expansion pattern and its impacts on green space variation as well as thermal behavior in Doon valley over the last two decades during 2000 and 2019. Landsat 5 and Landsat 8 images of February and May month of two study years 2000 and 2019 were used for the analysis. The land use change analysis revealed notable outgrowth of urbanization with 184% increase in Doon valley during 2000-2019. To examine the effects of locational factors on urban growth, relative Shannon entropy analysis was carried out based on two factors, i.e., distances from city center and roads. It was seen that all the roads and city center have witnessed consistent and higher urban spread in its surroundings with high relative entropy value more than 0.9. Further analysis shows that there was considerable loss of agriculture crop lands and fallow lands along the major roads and around city center. Forest area was mostly affected along the road towards Mussorie hill station (road 2) because of its hilly surroundings whereas in Subhash Nagar area (road 4), fallow land and cultivated land were mainly replaced by the development activities. Analysis was also carried out to assess the spatial-temporal distribution of land surface temperature (LST) and its changing dynamics with land covers. It revealed that LST has increased in all the land use types with overall increase of 1.86 °C and 8.62 °C in the months February and May, respectively, during the study period. It is also found that normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and LST are negatively correlated with R2 0.46 and 0.28 for the months February and May, respectively. However, the correlation between NDVI and LST was found highly significant with P value less than 0.01. Therefore, spatial and temporal changes of different land use types especially rapid urbanization at the cost of green spaces with rampant anthropogenic activities is one of the main factor for LST increase in the study area. Moreover, this temperature rise with ever-increasing anthropogenic activities is not a healthy indication for the hilly region like Doon Valley which may adversely affect the ecosystem stability and its resources as well. The study may be used as reference for future ecological and urban management studies and policies.
