RESUMO

This research concerns the modification of commercially available epoxy resin with flame retardants in order to obtain aging-resistant and antimicrobial polymeric materials with a plant stabilizer dedicated to use in rail transport. Polymer compositions based on epoxy resin, fiberglass fabric, and naringenin were prepared. Naringenin was added as a natural stabilizer at 2, 4, and 8 phr. The materials were subjected to solar aging lasting 800 h. The hardness of the samples, surface energy, and carbonyl indexes were determined, and the color change in the composition after aging was analyzed. In addition, microscopic observations, analyses of mechanical properties, and microbiological tests were performed. The hardness determination showed that the samples retained their functional properties after solar aging. The increase in the polar component of the surface energy of all materials indicated the beginning of the degradation process of the composites. The tensile one-directional tests were carried out for plane samples taken in three directions (0, 90, and 45 degrees referred to a plate edge) before and after the aging process. The addition of naringenin did not affect the functional and surface properties of the epoxy resin-based materials. Polyphenol stabilized polymer composites, as evidenced by the results of carbonyl indexes. Moreover, the obtained samples showed good antimicrobial properties for E. coli and C. albicans in the field of testing the viability of microbial cells in contact with the tested surfaces.

The laser surface modification of metallic implants presents a promising alternative to other surface modification techniques. A total of four alloyed metallic biomaterials were used for this study: medical steel (AISI 316L), cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy (CoCrMo) and titanium alloys (Ti6Al4V and Ti6Al7Nb). Samples of metallic biomaterials after machining were subjected to polishing or laser modification in two different versions. The results of surface modification were documented using SEM imaging and roughness measurement. After modification, the samples were sterilized with dry hot air, then exposed to citrate blood, washed with PBS buffer, fixed with glutaraldehyde, sputtered with a layer of gold and imaged using SEM to enable the quantification of adhered, activated and aggregated platelets on the surface of biomaterial samples. The average total number, counted in the field of view, of adhered platelets on the surfaces of the four tested biomaterials, regardless of the type of modification, did not differ statistically significantly (66 ± 81, 67 ± 75, 61 ± 70 and 57 ± 61 for AISI 316L, CoCrMo, Ti6Al4V and Ti6Al7Nb, respectively) and the average number of platelet aggregates was statistically significantly higher (p < 0.01) on the surfaces of AISI 316L medical steel (42 ± 53) and of the CoCrMo alloy (42 ± 52) compared to the surfaces of the titanium alloys Ti6Al4V (33 ± 39) and Ti6Al7Nb (32 ± 37). Remaining blood after contact was used to assess spontaneous platelet activation and aggregation in whole blood by flow cytometry. An in-depth analysis conducted on the obtained results as a function of the type of modification indicates small but statistically significant differences in the interaction of platelets with the tested surfaces of metallic biomaterials.

INTRODUCTION: Pompe disease is a rare, autosomal recessive, lysosomal disorder caused by deficiency of alpha glucosidase (GAA). It leads to the accumulation of glycogen in body tissues, with severe myopathy and cardiomegaly as a hallmark of the classic infantile form. Non-classical, or late onset, Pompe disease (LOPD) manifests after 12 months of age or in adulthood. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The clinical heterogeneity of LOPD causes delay in diagnosis and pharmacological treatment. In the Polish population, it is still underdiagnosed, and the time from onset to diagnosis remains a cause for concern. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Although typically patients present with proximal muscle weakness, high CK or early respiratory insufficiency, they can also suffer from multiple symptoms from other organs. Patients may present with arrhythmias, vascular abnormalities including aneurysms or dilative arteriopathy, gastric or urinary symptoms, or musculoskeletal pathologies. RESULTS: A high index of suspicion among neurologists consulting internal medicine wards would aid early diagnosis of LOPD, while a multidisciplinary approach with the involvement of other specialists can reduce the risk of complications and improve the prognosis for LOPD patients. Patients who manifest with musculoskeletal and respiratory symptoms are prone to be diagnosed sooner than individuals with non-muscular symptoms, and therefore it is important to raise awareness of other manifestations of this disease.

This research aimed to show the possible impact of natural antioxidants on epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) green composites. Thus, the ENR/PLA blends were prepared with the addition of three selected phytochemicals (catechin hydrate, eugenol and flavone). Obtained materials were submitted for solar aging. The analysis of the samples' features revealed that catechin hydrate is a natural substance that may delay the degradation of ENR/PLA blends under the abovementioned conditions. The blend loaded with catechin hydrate presented stable color parameters (dE < 3 a.u.), the highest aging coefficient (K = 0.38 a.u.) and the lowest carbonyl index based on FT-IR data (CI = 1.56) from among all specimens. What is more, this specimen prolonged the oxidation induction time in comparison with the reference samples. Gathered data prove the efficiency of catechin hydrate as an anti-aging additive. Additionally, it was found that a specimen loaded with flavone changed its color parameters significantly after solar aging (dE = 14.83 a.u.) so that it would be used as an aging indicator. Eventually, presented eco-friendly ENR-based compositions may be applied in polymer technology where materials presenting specific properties are desirable.

The COVID-19 pandemic underlines the importance of targeting the groups with the highest risk of vaccine hesitancy, understanding their fears, and alleviating them. As the pandemic situation is very dynamic due to the appearance of new SARS-CoV-2 variants, concerns might also change over time. This is the first study to evaluate the vaccination rate and state of knowledge among medical students in Poland, comparing English and Polish divisions. We collected the data in 2 months. A total of 1,521 surveys were collected as follows: 273 students from the English division and 1,248 students from the Polish division answered the survey. The questionnaire was aimed at investigating students' awareness, knowledge, and apprehensions toward the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccines. The results were obtained for the following statements: good knowledge about ways of transmission is not statistically significant in determining if a student is vaccinated. Moreover, a year of study is not statistically significant in determining if a student knows all ways of COVID-19 transmission. Interestingly, the correlation between the statement "Keeping up to date with the upcoming vaccines is important for my role as a future health care worker" and being vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 showed that 45.5% of unvaccinated students did not update their information about the vaccines and rated 1 out of 5 for this statement (p < 0.001). Even though the pandemic will not last forever, the obtained knowledge about the role of individual interests can be applied in many different life situations as this feature is statistically significant.

The article presents validation argumentation of the novel method of evaluating resistance to surface wetting with different liquids of protective materials intended for polymer protective gloves based on the three parameters: water permeability index, non-wettability index and absorption index. Using our own method of evaluating resistance to surface wetting, it was shown that the knurled structure of the palm part of polymer protective gloves may inhibit transport of harmful and hazardous liquids outside the area of the protective glove. Currently, there is lack of objectifying methods for evaluation of surface wettability focused on the mentioned aspects. In view of the above facts, an original method for evaluating the resistance of protective materials to surface wetting with mineral oils and water has been invented and validated. It was assumed that the non-wettability index will be subjected to metrological analysis. Consequently, the validation process refers to this index. A precise assessment of the uncertainty budget of the individual components was obtained. On the basis of the obtained results, the measurement errors that may affect the quality and reliability of the test result performed in the laboratory were identified.

Silver and copper as additives of various biomaterials have been reported as the potential solutions for biomedicine applications, mostly because of inducing bactericidal effects. The application of those admixtures in diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings may be desirable for orthopedic implants. In the present manuscript, the biological effect of coatings with up to about 7 at.% and 14 at.% of, respectively, Cu and Ag is compared. The morphology, chemical structure, and composition of films deposited on AISI 316LVM and Ti6Al7Nb is characterized. The live/dead analysis conducted with Escherichia coli shows a higher bactericidal potential of silver than copper. Although the Cu-doped coatings can positively affect the proliferation of Saos-2 and EA.hy926 cell lines, the results of XTT test are on the verge of 70% of viability. Biological effect of silver on EA.hy926 cell lines is negative but that admixture ensures high proliferation of osteoblasts in contact with coatings deposited on titanium alloy (over 20% better than for substrate material). In that case, the viability is reaching about 85% for Ag-doped coatings on AISI 316LVM and 75% on Ti6Al7Nb. The results indicate that for the sake of bactericidal coatings that may promote osteointegration, the candidates are DLC with silver content no higher than 10 at.%.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many consider volunteer blood donors as ideal candidates for unrelated haematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) donation. However, frequent blood donations could influence the results of HPC mobilization. To our best knowledge, there are no data on the possible impact of repeated blood donation on efficiency of subsequent HPC mobilization by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared outcomes of HPC mobilization in unrelated donors with and without a history of blood donation. We conducted a prospective study on 287 consecutive donors admitted to the Department of Hematology since January 2016. The final analysis included 153 donors who agreed to take part in the study and had undergone stem cell mobilization with G-CSF. RESULTS: History of blood donations prior to haematopoietic stem cell mobilization with G-CSF does not have a significant impact on the number of collected CD34+ cells in the first leucocytapheresis (516.2 x 106 (170-1148) in blood donors vs 490.5 x 106 (101-1154) in non-donors) (P = 0.32). In all donors, in this study mobilization of HPC was successful: 87.5% of blood donors and 85.6% of non-donors collected the required cell number in a single apheresis. In blood donors, a higher number of blood donations within 2 and 5 years prior to HPC mobilization correlated significantly with successful donation within one leucocytapheresis (P = 0.014 and P = 0.024, respectively). CONCLUSION: Multiple blood donations do not significantly influence the outcome of HPC collection in unrelated donors. Blood donors and non-donors have similar results of HPC collection, so there is no reason to favour either group.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to screen for late-onset Pompe disease using the dried blood spot (DBS) test in a cohort of patients with limb-girdle muscle weakness or persistent hyperCKemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with limb-girdle muscle weakness, persistently elevated CK, rigid spine syndrome, dyspnoea, myalgia or sibling of the patient diagnosed with LOPD were included in the study. Acid α-glucosidase (GAA) activity was measured on DBS by tandem mass spectrometry and followed by genetic testing when required. Study was conducted between June 2014 and May 2017. RESULTS: A total of 337 patients aged 32.2 years (range 2-80) were included in the study. Late-onset Pompe disease was diagnosed in 10 patients (3.0% of tested cohort). All were compound heterozygotes with common c.32-13T>G mutation on one allele and missense or frameshift mutation on the other. Two of the mutations (c.1951delG and c.397T>G) were not reported previously. Seven of the patients started enzyme replacement therapy. CONCLUSIONS: DBS test is a reliable method for screening for late-onset Pompe disease.

INTRODUCTION: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease of the neuromuscular junction. Approximately 10%-15% of MG patients have juvenile (<18 years of age) onset. We aimed to assess the clinical course, outcome, and subjectively perceived health status of a cohort of juvenile MG patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of medical records of 101 patients followed by a cross-sectional questionnaire study. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 12.8 years at onset and 13.7 years at diagnosis. Ninety percent of the patients were seropositive. Over 40% of the patients were treated with immunosuppression and over 80% underwent thymectomy. The mean Myathenia Gravis Activities of Daily Living (MG-ADL) scale score was 2.48. At last follow-up, 30.9% of patients were in complete, stable remission; 77.8% perceived their health as good. DISCUSSION: The treatment outcome for juvenile MG is favorable, with a marked reduction of symptoms and good day-to-day activity achieved for most patients. Muscle Nerve 59:549-549, 2019.

BACKGROUND: Ipsilateral shoulder pain (ISP) is a common complication of mixed etiology after thoracic surgery (its prevalence is estimated in the literature at between 42% and 97%). It is severe and resistant to treatment (patients complain of pain despite effective epidural analgesia at the surgical site). AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this retrospective, observational study was to evaluate the prevalence of ISP in patients operated on in our facility and to determine the risk factors for ISP development. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 68 patients after thoracotomy or videothoracoscopy (video-assisted thoracic surgery - VATS) conducted under general and regional anesthesia were enrolled in the study and divided into two groups: group I without ISP and group II with postoperative ISP. We recorded age, sex, BMI, duration of surgery, type of surgery, type of regional anesthesia, and, in patients with epidural anesthesia, level of catheter placement. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences between the groups were obtained for BMI (24.67 and 27.68, respectively; p = 0.049), type of surgery (24% for thoracotomy and 0% for VATS, p = 0.026), and level of epidural catheter placement (4.35% for catheters placed at the level of Th5 or higher and 40.47% for catheters placed below Th5; p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of ISP in our medical center amounts to 24% of thoracotomy patients. The fact that the difference in ISP prevalence was significantly related to the level of epidural catheter placement is consistent with the theory that ISP is related to phrenic nerve innervation. Moreover, epidural catheter placement is a modifiable factor, which can be used to reduce the prevalence of post-thoracotomy ISP.
