RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In the past, textbook or printed material was the only source of information for medical students or post-graduate students. After the introduction of internet, knowledge can be accessed easily which is updated with various aids such as animation, videos which improve the learning efficiency. This study was conducted to compare the learning efficiency between textbook-based seminar to that of internet-based seminar in postgraduate students of the department of dermatology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was a non-randamized controlled study. The postgraduate students in the department of dermatology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical college, DMIMS(DU),Sawangi (Meghe), Wardha, Maharashtra, India were divided into two equal groups by simple randomization method by flipping the coin. Totally 20 seminar topics were divided into two groups (A and B) consisting of 10 seminars in each group. Postgraduate students assigned in group A were asked to prepare seminar solely from textbooks while in group B, students were asked to prepare seminar by referring internet. Feedback form which consists of 7 points, i.e. appearance, completeness of preparation, clarity of presentation, appropriate use of audio visual aids, understanding of subject, ability to answer questions, and overall performance were filled up from faculties and postgraduate students after completion of each seminar. Pretest and post-test were filled up from postgraduate students before and after each seminar respectively. Learning gain was calculated by comparing the scores of pretest and posttest. Paired t-test was used to compare results in the group and unpaired t-test was used to compare results between the two groups. RESULTS: Faculties' feedback on overall performance was higher (4.59 ± 0.15) in web-based seminars as compared to in textbook-based seminars (3.85 ± 0.1) with significant P = 0.008. Furthermore, postgraduate students' feedback showed statistical significant value of 0.02 in web-based seminars (4.65 ± 0.06) compared to textbook-based seminars (3.2 ± 0.06). Learning gain was significantly higher in web-based seminar compared to textbook-based seminar with P = 0.02. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that web-based learning can improve the learning efficiency in postgraduate medical students.

Background: Azathioprine is an immunosuppressant used to treat several immunological disorders. As a purine analog, it inhibits DNA synthesis and cell multiplication. However, marrow suppression is a serious complication associated with azathioprine. Aim: To analyze the marrow suppression caused by azathioprine in dermatology patients. Material and Method: This is a retrospective analysis of the records of 18 patients who presented with marrow suppression secondary to azathioprine which was used for the treatment of various dermatological diseases. Results: The analysis includes 18 patients, 15 females and 3 males with the average age being 25.88 years. All except two patients received 1 mg/kg of oral azathioprine once daily. Leukopenia was seen in 13 patients (with severe leukopenia in 7 patients), thrombocytopenia in 8, and low hemoglobin in 14 patients. Isolated low hemoglobin was seen in four patients, isolated leukopenia in four patients, and only one patient presented with isolated thrombocytopenia. Six patients had pancytopenia. The duration from the starting dose to reporting of marrow suppression ranged from 10 days to 1 year. Eight out of 18 patients presented with anagen effluvium, 2 patients with oral ulcers, and 1 patient with an upper respiratory tract infection. All the patients recovered within 1 month. Conclusion: Marrow suppression due to azathioprine can occur with a low dose of 1 mg/kg. Hair loss and oral ulcers serve as early warning signs for marrow suppression.

BACKGROUND: Dermatologic conditions have different presentation and management in pediatric age group from that in adult; this to be studied separately for statistical and population based analysis. OBJECTIVE: To study the pattern of various dermatoses in infants and children in tertiary health care center in South Gujarat region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective study; various dermatoses were studied in pediatric patients up to 14 years of age attending the Dermatology OPD of New Civil Hospital, Surat, Gujarat over a period of 12 months from June 2009 to June 2010. All patients were divided into four different study groups: <1 month (neonates), 1 month to 1 year, >1 to 6 years and 7 to 14 years. RESULTS: There were 596 boys and 425 girls in total 1021 study populations. Majority of the skin conditions in neonates were erythema toxicum neonatorum (12.97%), scabies (9.92%), mongolian spot (9.16%), and seborrheic dermatitis (7.63%). In > 1 month to 14 years age group of children among infectious disorder, children were found to be affected most by scabies (24.49%), impetigo (5.96%), pyoderma (5.62%), molluscum contagiosum (5.39%), tinea capitis (4.49%), leprosy (2.02%), and viral warts (1.35%) while among non-infectious disorders, they were affected by atopic dermatitis (4.27%), pityriasis alba (4.16%), seborrheic dermatitis (3.60%), pityriasis rosea (3.15%), others (3.01%), phrynoderma (2.70%), lichen planus (2.58%), contact dermatitis (1.57%) and ichthyosis (1.45%). CONCLUSION: There is a need to emphasize on training the management of common pediatric dermatoses to dermatologists, general practitioners and pediatricians for early treatment.
