RESUMO

The creation of well-defined hollow two-dimensional structures from small organic molecules, particularly those with controlled widths and numbers of segments, remains a formidable challenge. Here we report the fabrication of the well-defined concentric hollow two-dimensional platelets with programmable widths and numbers of segments through constructing a concentric multiblock two-dimensional precursor followed by post-processing. The fabrication of concentric multi-hexagons two-dimensional platelets is realized by the alternative heteroepitaxial growth of two donor-acceptor molecules. Upon ultraviolet irradiation, one of the two donor-acceptor molecules can be selectively oxidized by singlet oxygen generated during the process, and the oxidized product becomes more soluble due to increased polarity. This allows for selective removal of the oxidized segments simply by solvent dissolution, yielding hollow multiblock two-dimensional structures. The hollow two-dimensional platelets can be utilized as templates to lithograph complex electrodes with precisely controlled gap sizes, thereby offering a platform for examining the optoelectronic performance of functional materials.

UNSTRUCTURED: Migraine, a frequent and highly disabling disorder, necessitates enhanced education of individuals with migraine to mitigate this global burden. The rapidly evolving field of large language models (LLMs) presents a promising avenue for assisting in migraine patient education. This study aims to assess the potential of LLMs in this context by evaluating the accuracy of responses from five leading LLMs, including OpenAI's ChatGPT 3.5 and 4.0, Google Bard, Meta Llama2, and Anthropic Claude2, in addressing 30 commonly asked migraine-related queries. We found that LLMs demonstrated varied levels of accuracy. ChatGPT-4.0 provided 96.7% appropriate responses, while other chatbots provided 83.3% to 90% appropriate responses (Pearson's chi-squared test, P=0.481). Additionally, Google Bard had a 'poor' rating proportion of 6.7%, other LLMs had 3.3% (Pearson's chi-squared test, P=0.961). This study underscores the potential of LLMs to accurately address common migraine-related queries. Such findings could advance AI-assisted education for individuals with migraine, providing insights for a holistic approach to migraine management.

Introduction: Women experience excess cardiovascular risk compared to men in the setting of similar metabolic disease burden. This consistent finding could be related to sex differences in the vascular response to various forms of metabolic stress. In this study we examine the association of both systemic and organ-specific metabolic stress with vascular health in women and men. Methods: We conducted an observational study of 4,299 adult participants (52% women, aged 59±13 years) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018 cohort and 110,225 adult outpatients (55% women, aged 64±16 years) of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) 2019 cohort. We used natural splines to examine the association of systemic and organ-specific measures of metabolic stress including body mass index (BMI), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), hepatic FIB-4 score, and CKD-EPI estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on systolic blood pressure (SBP). Piecewise linear models were generated using normal value thresholds (BMI <25 kg/m 2 , HbA1c <5.7%, FIB-4 <1.3, and eGFR ≥90 ml/min), which approximated observed spline breakpoints. The primary outcome was increase in SBP (relative to a sex-specific physiologic baseline SBP) in association with increase in level of each metabolic measure. Results: Women compared to men demonstrated larger magnitudes and an earlier onset of increase in SBP per increment increase across all metabolic stress measures. The slope of SBP increase per increment of each metabolic measure was greater for women than men particularly for metabolic measures within the normal range, with slope differences of 1.71 mmHg per kg/m2 of BMI, 9.61 mmHg per %HbA1c, 6.45 mmHg per FIB-4 unit, and 0.37 mmHg per ml/min decrement of eGFR in the NHANES cohort (P difference <0.05 for all). Overall results were consistent in the CSMC cohort. Conclusions: Women exhibited greater vascular sensitivity in the setting of multiple types of metabolic stress, particularly in periods representing the transition from metabolic health to disease. These findings underscore the importance of involving early metabolic health interventions as part of efforts to mitigate vascular risks in both women and men.

The water oxidation half-reaction at anodes is always considered the rate-limiting step of overall water splitting (OWS), but the actual bias distribution between photoanodes and cathodes of photoelectrochemical (PEC) OWS cells has not been investigated systematically. In this work, we find that, for PEC cells consisting of photoanodes (nickel-modified n-Si [Ni/n-Si] and α-Fe2O3) with low photovoltage (Vph < 1 V), a large portion of applied bias is exerted on the Pt cathode for satisfying the hydrogen evolution thermodynamics, showing a thermodynamics-controlled characteristic. In contrast, for photoanodes (TiO2 and BiVO4) with Vph > 1 V, the bias required for cathode activation can be significantly reduced, exhibiting a kinetics-controlled characteristic. Further investigations show that the bias distribution can be regulated by tuning the electrolyte pH and using alternative half-reaction couplings. Accordingly, a volcano plot is presented for the rational design of the overall reactions and unbiased PEC cells. Motivated by this, an unbiased PEC cell consisting of a simple Ni/n-Si photoanode and Pt cathode is assembled, delivering a photocurrent density of 5.3 ± 0.2 mA cm-2.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the sex disparities in type 2 diabetes-associated cardiovascular disease (CVD) risks may be related to early-onset hypertension that could benefit from intensive blood pressure (BP) control. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We analyzed intensive versus standard BP control in relation to incident CVD events in women and men with type 2 diabetes, based on their age of hypertension diagnosis. RESULTS: Among 3,792 adults with type 2 diabetes (49% women), multivariable-adjusted CVD risk was increased per decade earlier age at hypertension diagnosis (hazard ratio 1.11 [1.03-1.21], P = 0.006). Excess risk associated with early-diagnosed hypertension was attenuated in the presence of intensive versus standard antihypertensive therapy in women (P = 0.036) but not men (P = 0.76). CONCLUSIONS: Women with type 2 diabetes and early-onset hypertension may represent a higher-risk subpopulation that not only contributes to the excess in diabetes-related CVD risk for women but may benefit from intensive BP control.

We report a light-irradiation method to control the synchronous nucleation of a donor-acceptor (D-A) fluorophore for growing highly uniform single-crystalline microrods, which is in sharp contrast to the prevailing methods of restricting spontaneous nucleation and additionally adding seeds. The D-A fluorophore was observed to undergo photoinduced electron transfer to CrCl3, leading to the generation of HCl and the subsequent protonation of the D-A fluorophore. By intensifying photoirradiation or prolonging its duration, the concentration of protonated D-A fluorophores can be rapidly increased to a high supersaturation level. This results in the formation of a controlled number of nuclei in a synchronous manner, which in turn kickstart the epitaxial growth of protonated D-A fluorophores towards uniform single-crystalline microrods of controlled sizes. The light-regulated synchronous nucleation and uniform growth of microrods are a unique phenomenon that can only be achieved by specific Lewis acids, making it a novel probing method for sensitively detecting strong Lewis acids such as chromium chloride.

BACKGROUND: Although physical activity is widely recommended for reducing cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risks, female individuals consistently lag behind male individuals in exercise engagement. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to evaluate whether physical activity derived health benefits may differ by sex. METHODS: In a prospective study of 412,413 U.S. adults (55% female, age 44 ± 17 years) who provided survey data on leisure-time physical activity, we examined sex-specific multivariable-adjusted associations of physical activity measures (frequency, duration, intensity, type) with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality from 1997 through 2019. RESULTS: During 4,911,178 person-years of follow-up, there were 39,935 all-cause deaths including 11,670 cardiovascular deaths. Regular leisure-time physical activity compared with inactivity was associated with 24% (HR: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.73-0.80) and 15% (HR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.82-0.89) lower risk of all-cause mortality in women and men, respectively (Wald F = 12.0, sex interaction P < 0.001). Men reached their maximal survival benefit of HR 0.81 from 300 min/wk of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, whereas women achieved similar benefit at 140 min/wk and then continued to reach a maximum survival benefit of HR 0.76 also at ∼300 min/wk. Sex-specific findings were similar for cardiovascular death (Wald F = 20.1, sex interaction P < 0.001) and consistent across all measures of aerobic activity as well as muscle strengthening activity (Wald F = 6.7, sex interaction P = 0.009). CONCLUSIONS: Women compared with men derived greater gains in all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risk reduction from equivalent doses of leisure-time physical activity. These findings could enhance efforts to close the "gender gap" by motivating especially women to engage in any regular leisure-time physical activity.

Copper (Cu) has been widely used for catalyzing the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), but the plasmonic effect of Cu has rarely been explored for tuning the activity and selectivity of the CO2RR. Herein, we conducted a quantitative analysis on the plasmon-generated photopotential (Ehv) of a Cu nanowire array (NA) photocathode and found that Ehv exclusively reduced the apparent activation energy (Ea) of reducing CO2 to CO without affecting the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). As a result, the CO production rate was enhanced by 52.6% under plasmon excitation when compared with that under dark conditions. On further incorporation with a polycrystalline Si photovoltaic device, the Cu NA photocathode exhibits good stability in terms of photocurrent and syngas production (CO : H2 = 2 : 1) within 10 h. This work validates the crucial role of the plasmonic effect of Cu on modulating the activity and selectivity of the CO2RR.

For degradation of ß-lactam antibiotics pollution in waters, the strained ß-lactam ring is the most toxic and resistant moiety to biodegrade and redox-chemically treat among their functional groups. Hydrolytically opening ß-lactam ring with Lewis acid catalysts has long been recognized as a shortcut, but at room temperature, such hydrolysis is too slow to be deployed. Here, we found when Cu2+ was immobilized on imine-linked COF (covalent organic framework) (Cu2+/Py-Bpy-COF, Cu2+ load is 1.43 wt%), as-prepared composite can utilize the light irradiation (wavelength range simulated sunlight) to in situ heat anchored Cu2+ Lewis acid sites through an excellent photothermal conversion to open the ß-lactam ring followed by a desired full-decarboxylation of hydrolysates. Under 1 W/cm2 simulated sunlight, Cu2+/Py-Bpy-COF powders placed in a microfiltration membrane rapidly cause a temperature rising even to ~211.7 °C in 1 min. It can effectively hydrolyze common ß-lactam antibiotics in waters and even antibiotics concentration is as high as 1 mM and it takes less than 10 min. Such photo-heating hydrolysis rate is ~24 times as high as under dark and ~2 times as high as Cu2+ homogenous catalysis. Our strategy significantly decreases the interference from generally coexisting common organics in waters and potential toxicity concerns of residual carboxyl groups in hydrolysates and opens up an accessible way for the settlement of ß-lactam antibiotics pollutants by the only energy source available, the sunlight.
