RESUMO

Gymnosperms are mostly dioecious, and their staminate strobili undergo a longer developmental period than those of angiosperms. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to identify key genes and pathways involved in staminate strobilus development and dehiscence in Torreya grandis. Through weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), we identified fast elongation-related genes enriched in carbon metabolism and auxin signal transduction, whereas dehiscence-related genes were abundant in alpha-linolenic acid metabolism and the phenylpropanoid pathway. Based on WGCNA, we also identified PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTOR4 (TgPIF4) as a potential regulator for fast elongation of staminate strobilus and 2 WRKY proteins (TgWRKY3 and TgWRKY31) as potential regulators for staminate strobilus dehiscence. Multiple protein-DNA interaction analyses showed that TgPIF4 directly activates the expression of TRANSPORT INHIBITOR RESPONSE2 (TgTIR2) and NADP-MALIC ENZYME (TgNADP-ME). Overexpression of TgPIF4 significantly promoted staminate strobilus elongation by elevating auxin signal transduction and pyruvate content. TgWRKY3 and TgWRKY31 bind to the promoters of the lignin biosynthesis gene PHENYLALANINE AMMONIA-LYASE (TgPAL) and jasmonic acid metabolism gene JASMONATE O-METHYLTRANSFERASE (TgJMT), respectively, and directly activate their transcription. Overexpression of TgWRKY3 and TgWRKY31 in the staminate strobilus led to early dehiscence, accompanied by increased lignin and methyl jasmonate levels, respectively. Collectively, our findings offer a perspective for understanding the growth of staminate strobili in gymnosperms.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have investigated the relationship between ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) administration and liver function and inflammatory reaction in patients undergoing liver resection, but the results remain conflicting and inconclusive. Areas covered: In this meta-analysis, a relevant database search was performed to retrieve all the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) exploring the effect of ω-3 PUFAs administration in patients undergoing hepatectomy until the end of April 2018. A random effect model was used to conduct this meta-analysis with RevMan 5.3.5 software. The quality of evidence for each postoperative outcome was assessed using the GRADEpro analysis. Expert opinion: 4 RCTs including 553 patients (277 with and 276 without ω-3 PUFAs) were identified. ω-3 PUFAs significantly reduced alanine aminotransferase [Mean difference (MD): -68.82, 95% confidence interval (CI): -108.55 to - 29.08; p = 0.0007]; aspartate aminotransferase (MD: -64.92, 95% CI: -112.87 to -16.98; p = 0.008), white blood cell count (MD: -1.22, 95% CI: -2.15 to -0.29; p = 0.01) and increased the level of pre-albumin on postoperative day 3 (MD: 10.42, 95% CI: 4.84 to 15.99; p = 0.0002). The results indicate that ω-3 PUFAs administration has a positive impact on the liver function and inflammatory reaction in patients undergoing liver resection.

This paper explores a new method for rapid structural damage inspection of steel tube slab (STS) structures along randomly measured paths based on a combination of compressive sampling (CS) and ultrasonic computerized tomography (UCT). In the measurement stage, using fewer randomly selected paths rather than the whole measurement net is proposed to detect the underlying damage of a concrete-filled steel tube. In the imaging stage, the ℓ1-minimization algorithm is employed to recover the information of the microstructures based on the measurement data related to the internal situation of the STS structure. A numerical concrete tube model, with the various level of damage, was studied to demonstrate the performance of the rapid UCT technique. Real-world concrete-filled steel tubes in the Shenyang Metro stations were detected using the proposed UCT technique in a CS framework. Both the numerical and experimental results show the rapid UCT technique has the capability of damage detection in an STS structure with a high level of accuracy and with fewer required measurements, which is more convenient and efficient than the traditional UCT technique.

Large-scale 2D Au lattices with honeycomb-like structure are fabricated on Si(111)-7 × 7 surface at room temperature. The growth pattern investigated by reflection high-energy electron diffraction and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy indicates that the 2D Au lattices are composed of two interfacial distinct layers that are completely formed one after another with a close-packed structure. A unique wide forbidden gap of 4.1 eV is measured around the Fermi level of the 2D Au lattices by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Bias-dependent STM images and theoretical simulations suggest that the in-plane quantum coupling and carrier transport behavior are responsible for the novel electronic properties. In addition to local electronic states, the electronic structures of 2D Au lattices are further modulated by the carrier transport preference that is determined by carrier energy and symmetry of 2D lattices. These findings will provide some references for the controlled fabrication and for routing the carrier transport behavior of low-dimensional metal structures.
