RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the performance of 10 MHz ultrasonography in detecting posterior lens capsule defects before traumatic cataract surgery. METHODS: This retrospective analysis includes patients with traumatic cataracts who underwent cataract surgery. Preoperative 10 MHz ultrasonography was performed to evaluate whether the posterior lens capsule was defective or intact, and the results were compared to the intraoperative findings. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, accuracy, and kappa were calculated. RESULTS: The study included 140 eyes of 140 patients. There were 68 eyes with closed-globe injuries and 72 eyes with open-globe injuries. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, accuracy, and kappa of 10 MHz ultrasonography was 86.76%, 90.28%, 89.39%, 87.84%, 88.57% and 0.771, respectively. The accuracy was 86.11% and 91.18% in open-globe and closed-globe injury groups, respectively. CONCLUSION: The accuracy of 10 MHz ultrasonography in evaluating the posterior lens capsule in traumatic cataracts is high. Preoperative 10 MHz ultrasonography would help to make an appropriate surgical plan.

We measured winter and summer soil organic carbon (SOC) contents in two typical coastal wetlands, the Spartina alterniflora salt marsh and the non-vegetation mudflat, on the south side of the Chuandong River Estuary in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. We investigated the spatiotemporal variations of soil organic carbon contents and its driving factors. The results showed that SOC content ranged from 0.75 to 2.38 g·kg-1 in the mudflat area and from 2.07 to 18.59 g·kg-1 in the S. alterniflora salt marsh area, showing a decreasing trend towards the sea. The SOC content in the S. alterniflora salt marsh area was approximately 2.5 to 3.5 times of that in the mudflat area. Within a depth range of 1 m, there was no vertical variation in SOC content in the mudflat area, but an increasing and then decreasing pattern in the S. alterniflora marsh area with the peak occurring in the depth range of 20 to 30 cm. Soil organic carbon content exhibited significant seasonal difference, with higher value in summer than in winter. The summer SOC content was 5% to 10% higher than that in winter in the S. alterniflora marsh area, while it was 43% higher in summer than in winter in the mudflat area. In the S. alterniflora marsh area, soil organic carbon content was positively correlated with soil moisture and salinity, but negatively correlated with sediment particle size. In contrast, there was no significant correlation between soil organic carbon content and soil physicochemi-cal factors in the mudflat area. Those results indicated that the correlation between various soil physicochemical factors and SOC is established on the basis of vegetation cover in coastal wetlands. Our findings could provide valuable insights for the conservation of blue carbon ecosystems in coastal wetlands in China.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze choroidal vascular density alteration in high myopia with or without choroidal neovascularization by using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational study that included 60 high-myopia eyes. All the participants had comprehensive ophthalmic assessments with visual acuity, intraocular pressure, slit lamp-assisted biomicroscopy, color fundus photography, axial length, optometry, and OCTA. Age, sex, and comorbidities were collected from their medical charts. Univariate and multiple analyses were made to compare the age, spherical equivalent, choroidal vascular density, gender, and choroidal thickness between normal and patients with choroidal neovascularization. Results: 60 eyes with high myopia were included in our study, including 30 eyes with choroidal neovascularization and 30 eyes without choroidal neovascularization or other fundus pathology. The mean age of high myopic patients was older in the choroidal neovascularization group than in the normal group (48.43 ± 19.06 years vs. 28.83 ± 9.92 years, p < 0.01). The mean choroidal thickness of high myopic patients was thinner in the neovascularization group than in the normal group (68.81 ± 48.81 µm vs. 137.80 ± 66.33 µm, p < 0.01). The mean choroidal vascular density in the normal group was greater than in the choroidal neovascularization group (82.43 ± 8.73 vs. 67.54 ± 12.56, p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in spherical equivalent between the choroidal neovascularization group and the normal group (-10.56 ± 2.97D vs. -11.93 ± 3.38D, p = 0.11). Multivariate analysis showed that after adjusting for covariates, less choroidal vascular density and older age were independent factors associated with choroidal neovascularization in the high myopic eye. Conclusion: Decreased choroidal vascular density and older age played an important role in the development of choroidal neovascularization in high myopic eyes. OCTA may help us to identify the highly myopic patients that need to intervene.

Poly(malic acid) (PMLA) is a water-soluble, biodegradable, biocompatible, and nontoxic polyester in the poly(hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA) family. it features various applications in pharmaceutical field. Herein, NaCo(CO)4 and pyridine derivatives are employed for direct carbonylative polymerization of benzyl glycidate (BG) for poly(ß-malic acid) production. Further investigation on reaction mechanism reveals that this polymerization undergoes a direct chain growth, rather than a sequential process involving ß-lactone intermediate. The low cost and facile preparation of epoxide substrate render this methodology extremely appealing that avoids the rather tedious procedures for ß-malolactonate synthesis required toward ring opening polymerization. This study also represents an alternative strategy over traditional methods for poly(ß-malic acid) production using step growth polycondensation of malic acid.

DCOIT (4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) is the main ingredient in SeaNine-211, a new antifouling agent that replaces organotin compounds to prevent the growth of fouling organisms on board. Biocides from antifoulants can cause problems for marine ecosystems by destroying non-target algal species. This study evaluated the potential adverse effects DCOIT using the Marine Chlorella sp. The concentration of DCOIT were set according to the semi-inhibitory concentrations for acute exposure experiments, and relevant oxidative stress indicators were measured to assess the acute toxic effects. The results showed that the inhibition concentrations (IC50) of DCOIT against Marine Chlorella sp was 2.522 mg/L. The genes related to photosynthesis and antioxidant capacity showed the effect of promoting low concentration and inhibiting high concentration. In addition, based on the ultrastructural observation and the expression analysis of photosynthesis related genes, it was found that DCOIT had a significant effect on plant photosynthesis.

Polystyrene (PS) is one of the most dangerous polymers, mainly because of the mutagenic or carcinogenic risk of the monomers used to produce it. Sea-Nine 211 is a commercial antifouling agent; its active ingredient is the biocide 4,5-dichloro-2-octyl-4-isothiazolinone-3-one (DCOIT). Micro- and nano-plastics have different synergistic effects on marine organisms together with organic pollutants. To understand the toxic effects of DCOIT and PS alone and in combination, marine Chlorella sp was selected as the experimental organism. The exposure concentration of DCOIT was set at 50 µg/L, and that of PS was set at 10 µg/L. The results show that all exposed groups promoted the growth of marine Chlorella sp in the late stage of exposure, and the recovery time of marine Chlorella sp in the exposed group containing PS was earlier. Changing trend of chlorophyll a was consistent with the growth trend. On the 15th day of exposure, the gene expression of the photosynthesis system in the combined exposed group showed a significant difference, and the cells produced oxidative stress. Scanning electron microscope observation shows the algae adhered to each other. The volume of algae cells in DCOIT and PS exposed groups decreased, and the internal structure of algae cells in each exposed group was damaged.

Background: To newly describe the vault measurement by using a widely used swept-source OCT-based optical biometer (IOLMaster700) and accessd the accuracy of vault measurement. Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study. All patients underwent implantable Collamer lens (ICL) implantation surgery without complications. IOLMaster700 and AS-OCT analyses were conducted for each eye on the same day in the same condition. Measurements of anterior chamber depth (ACD), corneal-ICL (C-ICL), and vault values were made and recorded. The repeatability of the IOL Master700 measurements was quantified based upon intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) values. Correlations between IOL Master700 and AS-OCT measurements made with these different analytical approaches were assessed. The agreement of instruments was evaluated using Bland-Altman plots. Results: The IOLMaster700 instrument yielded highly reliable measurements of vault, C-ICL, and ACD (ICC = 0.996, 0.995, 0.995, respectively). Vault, C-ICL and ACD values as measured using the IOLMaster700, was slightly smaller than that measured via AS-OCT, but these differences were not significant (p = 0.652, p = 0.121 and p = 0.091, respectively). The vault, C-ICL, and ACD measurements by these two instruments were strongly correlated (r = 0.971, r = 0.944, and r = 0.963, respectively; all p < 0.001). The 95% limits of agreement for vault, C-ICL, and ACD measurements between the two devices were-0.08 to 0.08 mm,-0.14 to 0.11 mm, and-0.13 to 0.10 mm, respectively. Conclusions: The IOLMasrer700 can measure implanted ICL vault with a high degree of accuracy and repeatability. Good correlations and agreement were observed between IOLMaster700 and AS-OCT in measuring vault, C-ICL, and ACD measurements.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a unique class of commercially manufactured biodegradable polyesters with properties suitable for partially substituting petroleum-based plastics. However, high costs and low volumes of production have restricted their application as commodity materials. In this study, tri-metallic complexes were developed for carbonylative polymerization via a dual catalysis strategy, and 17 products of novel PHAs with up to 38.2 kg mol-1 Mn values were discovered. The polymerization proceeds in a sequential fashion, which entails the carbonylative ring expansion of epoxide to ß-lactone and its subsequent ring-opening polymerization that occurs selectively at the O-alkyl bond via carboxylate species. The wide availability and structural diversity of epoxide monomers provide PHAs with various structures, excellent functionalities, and tunable properties. This study represents a rare example of the preparation of PHAs using epoxides and carbon monoxide as raw materials.

MAPKKK is the largest family of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades and is known to play important roles in plant pathogen interaction by regulating fungal cell proliferation, growth, and pathogenicity. Thus far, only a few have been characterized because of the functional redundancy of MAPKKKs. In this study, it is interesting that Plasmodiophora brassicae (Pb)MAPKKK7 was clustered into the A3 subgroup of plant MAPKKKs by a phylogenetic analysis and also with the BCK1 and STE groups of fungal MAPKKKs. PbMAPKKK7 function in reactive oxygen species accumulation and cell death in Nicotiana benthamiana was characterized. Agroinfiltration with the PbMAPKKK7 mutated protein kinase domain relieved these changes. Interestingly, the induction of cell death was dependent on light intensity. Transcriptional profiling analysis demonstrated that PbMAPKKK7 was highly expressed during cortex infection stages, indicating its important role in P. brassicae infection. These functional analyses of PbMAPKKK7 build knowledge of new roles of the MAPK cascade pathway in N. benthamiana and P. brassicae interactions.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prognostic factors associated with visual outcomes in the salvageable eyes with posttraumatic endophthalmitis. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all patients diagnosed with posttraumatic endophthalmitis in our hospital between 2008 and 2015. The following information was collected: age, sex, etiology, past medical history, clinical manifestations, wound location, microbiology, blood leukocyte counts, types of interventions, initial visual acuities and final visual acuities. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to explore the factors associated with final best-corrected visual acuity. In total, 98 eyes of 98 patients were included in our study. Fifty-seven eyes underwent vitrectomy, 27 of them had silicone oil tamponade, 38 eyes received intravitreal ceftazidime only and 3 eyes received intracameral ceftazidime. In univariate analysis, poor initial visual acuity, presence of intraocular foreign body, number of intravitreal injections, retinal detachment and Zone 3 injury were associated with poor visual outcome. In multivariable analysis, poor initial visual acuity, presence of intraocular foreign body and number of intravitreal injections were independently associated with poor visual outcome. The silicone oil group had fewer repeated intravitreal injections than the group without oil tamponade. We concluded that the visual outcome of salvageable eyes with posttraumatic endophthalmitis is associated with initial visual acuity, presence of intraocular foreign body and number of intravitreal antibiotic injections.

This study was designed to compare optical biometry measurements and predicted refraction in cataract patients with high myopia [axial length (AL) ≥26 mm] using OA-2000 and IOL Master 500. Ocular biometry measurements were performed using both biometers before surgery. Uneventful cataract surgery was performed in all patients. Postoperative manifest refraction was obtained 3wk after surgery or later. A total of 67 eyes were examined. The AL, keratometry (K), and anterior chamber depth (ACD) of the two biometers showed excellent agreement. Predicted errors were similar and a strong positive correlation was observed (r=0.909). Out of 21 eyes (31.34%) with unsuccessful AL readings using the IOL Master 500, 20 eyes of them could be measured using OA-2000. Therefore, the biometric parameters measured by the two biometers showed good agreement. However, OA-2000 had a lower AL measurement failure rate.

Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) may be complicated with retinal ischemia in some cases. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the relationship between optical intensity on optical coherence tomography (OCT) and retinal ischemia in BRVO. Twenty-seven eyes diagnosed with BRVO without macular edema were classified into two groups based on the presence or absence of retinal ischemia. The optical intensity of inner retinal layers and photoreceptor inner segment ellipsoid zone/retinal pigment epithelium layer (ISe/RPE) in the affected and unaffected regions were measured on OCT. Their ratio (Optical intensity ratio, OIR) was calculated and compared between affected and unaffected region. In the retinal ischemia group, the optical intensity of inner retinal layers was higher in the affected region compared to the unaffected region while the optical intensity of ISe/RPE was low. The OIR was significantly higher in the affected region compared to control (0.83 ± 0.17 vs 0.68 ± 0.09, p < 0.001). However, in the non-ischemic group, there was no significant difference between the affected and unaffected region. The BCVA was moderately correlated with OIR of affected region (r = 0.489, p = 0.010). Our study suggests that optical intensity ratio on OCT is correlated with retinal ischemia in BRVO.

Endophthalmitis has devastating sequelae resulting in blindness and even loss of eyeball. Although the prognosis of endophthalmitis has much improved with the advances of antibiotics and vitreoretinal surgery, of the number of patients that required evisceration or enucleation is still significant. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 210 eyes of 210 patients with endophthalmitis andcompared the group that required evisceration or enucleation with those that received salvaging therapies. Regression analysis was used to identify the risk factors for evisceration or enucleation. Thirty eyes (14.3%) underwent enucleation or evisceration. The group of eviscerated or enucleated eyes were older (58.7 vs. 42.2 years, p < 0.001), had more women (56.7% vs. 22.2%, p = 0.003), had poorer initial visual acuity (2.79 vs. 2.10 LogMAR, p < 0.001), and had longer duration before intervention (18.03 vs. 5.74 days, p = 0.031). The most common primary indications for endophthalmitis were infections from corneal ulcer (50.0% vs. 4.4%, p < 0.001) andfrom endogenous source (23.3% vs. 5.6%, p < 0.001). Less common indications were trauma (26.7% vs. 67.8%, p < 0.001) and postoperative (6.7% vs. 22.2%, p = 0.049) endophthalmitis. After adjusting for confounding factors, corneal ulcer-related endophthalmitis, endogenous endophthalmitis and initial visual acuity were the independent risk factors for evisceration or enucleation.
