RESUMO

This study examined the moderating effects of sociotropic cognition (SC), a nondefensive need for approval, on stress-induced cardiovascular responsiveness (CVR) in women. Sixty-seven college-age females had blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) monitored during baseline, anticipation, story-telling (where participants were randomly assigned to a low or high threat condition), and recovery periods. SC showed a positive association with CVR only in the high interpersonal threat context during task and early stages of the recovery periods. SC was positively correlated with such variables as anxiety, ruminative style, dysphoria, and anger. This is the first report examining the moderating effects of SC on interpersonal stress-induced CVR prior to, during, and following a task, using an explicit manipulation of social evaluation. The data help define risk factors for CVR in women, which may aid in the understanding of how emotions and stress affect physical health and well-being.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Research and theory link an interpersonal conflict model to cardiovascular disease. Specifically, persons scoring high on cynical hostility and social defensiveness are thought to manifest a defensive need for approval while harboring basic distrust and hostility toward those who could provide such approval. The objective of this study was to assess whether angiographically determined coronary artery disease (CAD) was associated with this combination of high cynical hostility and high social defensiveness. METHODS: Fifty-nine male patients of a Veterans Administration Medical Center (86% white, mean age = 59.9 years) participated in the study on the day before their angiographic procedure; these men filled out the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (social defensiveness). They subsequently were categorized as having defensive hostility (DH), high hostility (HH), high social defensiveness (SD), or low psychosocial risk (LRisk; low on both scales). RESULTS: The four groups did not differ significantly on risk factor status or health status. As predicted, a preplanned contrast showed that the DH group's mean number of arteries with at least 50% blockage (mean = 2.5) differed significantly from the combined means of the other groups. The HH and SD groups did not differ from the LRisk group. CONCLUSIONS: When combined with other reports, the approach-avoidance interpersonal conflict model holds the promise of providing additional information about the psychosocial factors contributing to CAD development among men with high cynical hostility.

RESUMO

This article tests the hypothesis that 'sociotropic cognition'--heightened preoccupation with being accepted by others--increase vulnerability to cardiovascular stress in females. Adolescent girls (55 African-American; 23 Caucasian) at increased risk of developing essential hypertension due to persisting high normal blood pressure, completed measures of sociotropic cognition, social competence, trait affect and social support. Later, their blood pressure and heart rate were measured during non-social stress (mirror image tracing) and interpersonal stress [Social Competence Interview (SCI)]. Comparisons of blood pressure responses to the tasks disclosed a significant Task main effect, replicating a previous finding that blood pressure is elevated more by SCI than by non-social stress. When Sociotropy was introduced as a moderator, however, a significant Task by Sociotropy interaction indicated that the comparatively greater reactivity to SCI occurred mainly in girls who exhibited high levels of sociotropic thinking. Cognitive sociotropy was associated with a profile of social emotional and environmental deficits suggesting increased susceptibility to chronic stress and impaired coping.

RESUMO

A meta-analysis of 295 relevant effect sizes obtained from 25,469 participants confirmed expectations that elevated blood pressure (BP) and essential hypertension (EH) would be associated with lower affect expression but with more negative affectivity and defensiveness. The strongest associations occurred for defensiveness and measures of anger and affect expression linked to an interpersonal context(s). However, a number of other factors also were found to moderate associations of BP with personality measures, including awareness of BP status, gender, occupation, and diastolic versus systolic BP assessment. Given these moderators, the authors conclude that a traditional view of personality causing EH is untenable and that, not incorporating multifactorial, synergistic approaches is likely to obscure associations of personality-behavior with EH.

RESUMO

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory- (MMPI-) based Cook-Medley Hostility scale (Cook & Medley, 1954) historically has been used to investigate links between personality factors and health outcomes. We assessed the dimensionality of 27 Cook-Medley items previously found to predict mortality using full-information maximum likelihood factor analysis. The factor analyses revealed that these items serve as indicators for several constructs, with some factors apparently reflecting word usage rather than a meaningful psychological dimension. Our analyses indicate that the psychological meaning of these (sub)scales is ambiguous and differs according to the respondent's gender. The findings are discussed in the context of evidence to support the construct validity of the scale and the implications of dimensionality for making inferences concerning the link among scale scores, personality factors, and health outcomes.

RESUMO

This article describes the development and evaluation of an instrument that measures preferences for specific sexual behaviors of heterosexual men and women in a dyadic context. In Study 1, 74 statements of preference were reduced to 46 on the basis of reliability and range of responses. Factor analysis revealed that 27 of the 46 items loaded on 6 factors: Erotophilia, Use of Contraception, Conventionality, Use of Erotica, Use of Drugs/Alcohol, and Romanticism. In Study 2, factor analysis of fresh data from a second sample cross-validated these results. To establish construct validity of the revised 27-item Inventory of Dyadic Heterosexual Preferences (IDHP), relationships between each of its 6 scales and 6 criterion measures were examined. These analyses suggested that the last scale is more accurately characterized by the term Romantic Foreplay. We conclude that the IDHP measures 6 distinct domains of sexual preference with a brief, psychometrically sound instrument. Potential applications of the IDHP, suggestions for future research, and strengths and limitations of the current investigation are discussed.

RESUMO

We examined the interaction of a defensive need for approval with cynical hostility, in the prediction of pressor and heart rate reactivity to a stressful mental arithmetic task. For both systolic blood pressure and heart rate, analyses revealed the predicted interaction between defensiveness and cynical hostility; subsequent analyses showed significant correlations of defensiveness with systolic blood pressure and heart rate reactivity only among the high cynical hostility subjects. These analyses support the theory and empirical findings linking the conflicting traits of cynical hostility and defensiveness to cardiovascular reactivity and, quite possibly, to stress-related coronary disease.

RESUMO

Few investigations of sexual attitudes have restricted their focus to individuals' preferences for specific behaviors within a heterosexual relationship. None have examined gender differences in a broad and multidimensional array of such behavioral particulars. As part of an effort to develop a measure of preferred scripts in heterosexual couples, 258 men and women reported how much they agreed or disagreed with 74 statements of preference. A reduced and factor analyzed questionnaire included 38 items and was administered to a second sample (N = 228). Results offer qualified support that, compared to women, men are more erotophilic and show a stronger preference for incorporating erotic materials as well as drugs and alcohol into sexual relations with their partner. These results were more robust in the second sample, in which almost half of the subjects were tested in same-sex groups. Across both samples, women showed stronger preferences for activities reflecting romanticism. No gender differences were evident in sexual conventionality or in preference regarding the general use of contraceptives. However, results suggest that both sexes respond more favorably to a partner-focused or unspecified contraceptive method than to a self-focused method.

RESUMO

This study examined the convergent and divergent validity of heart-rate (HR)-based response discrepancy scores as measures of denial. After standardizing measures of stressor-related anxiety, hostility, and HR, response discrepancy scores were calculated by subtracting each measure of negative affect from the HR value. Analyses revealed the response discrepancy scores to correlate positively with measures of denial, negatively with a measure of trait anger, and to not correlate with measures of the nondefensive need for approval and the positive trait of curiosity. These findings support the construct validity of response discrepancy scores as markers of denial.

RESUMO

We identified, via cluster analysis, subgroups of young men with a parental history of hypertension (PH+) who differed in their profiles of need for approval, covert experience of anger, and extent to which they express anger when provoked. The PH+ subgroup with high need for approval and low anger acknowledgment scored higher on denial but lower on measures of angry temperament and overt display of anger than did the PH+ subgroup with low need for approval and high anger acknowledgment or men without a parental history of hypertension (PH-). Moreover, the PH+ subgroup with high need for approval and low anger acknowledgment manifested significantly higher stressor-induced blood pressure (BP) responsivity than did the other two groups. Possible relations between parental history status, need for approval, anger, BP reactivity, and essential hypertension are discussed.

RESUMO

The present research evaluated the psychometric properties of a brief self-report instrument designed to assess appraisal of diabetes. Two hundred male subjects completed the Appraisal of Diabetes Scale (ADS) and provided blood samples that were subsequently assayed to provide an index of glycemic control (i.e., glycosylated hemoglobin). Subjects also completed either (a) additional measures of diabetes-related health beliefs, diabetic daily hassles, perceived stress, diabetic adherence, and psychiatric symptoms or (b) the ADS on two additional occasions. Results indicated that the ADS is an internally consistent and stable measure of diabetes-related appraisal. The validity of the measure was supported by correlational analyses which documented the relationship between the ADS and several related self-report measures.

RESUMO

This study examines the relation between psychosocial adjustment and coping strategies among college freshmen. Three hundred thirty-one college students completed the Inventory of Psychosocial Development (IPD; Constantinople, 1969) and the Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (ACOPE; Patterson & McCubbin, 1987) inventory. Factor analysis of the ACOPE scales revealed two factors interpreted to represent the coping strategies of "salutary effort" and "stress palliation." For each subject a relative salutary effort score was calculated to reflect the proportion of coping efforts ascribable to mature, salutary coping efforts. Optimal adjustment was associated with adolescents whose reported means of dealing with tension reflected a high proportion of salutary effort. These findings, which support the notion of a covariation between styles of coping and psychological adjustment among adolescents, are discussed in light of psychosocial development, coping, and methodological issues related to research on coping and adjustment.

RESUMO

This study investigated whether relations between stressful life events and cardiovascular activity obtained during periods of rest and stress varied as a function of family history of hypertension. Within the family history of hypertension group, males exhibited a positive association between the number of negative avoidable events and resting systolic blood pressure, whereas an inverse association between these two variables was obtained for females. Among females with a family history of hypertension, inverse associations between resting diastolic blood pressure and the subjective effects of life event and number of avoidable events were obtained. Analyses revealed that diastolic blood pressure reactivity to stress was associated with those persons with a family history of hypertension who reported fewer negative life events and less subjective effects for these events.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to evaluate the relations between cardiovascular reactivity and two types of hostility, namely, overt expression of hostility in contrast to the covert experience of hostility. Diastolic blood pressure reactivity was associated with not overtly expressing hostility. For persons with a parental history of hypertension, systolic blood pressure (SBP) reactivity was associated with low scores on the covert hostility measure of irritability, while for persons without a parental history of hypertension, SBP reactivity was associated with high scores for irritability. The results are discussed in light of research in the area of cardiovascular reactivity and stress-related cardiovascular disease.

RESUMO

The study was conducted to assess whether certain personality characteristics in combination with a positive family history for essential hypertension (EH) are associated with excessive cardiovascular reactivity. Subgroups who differed in the patterns of their personality characteristics were identified within normotensives with a positive family history (FH+) of EH and within normotensives with a negative family history (FH-) of EH via cluster analytic techniques. A subgroup of FH+ subjects who were characterized by denial and unwilling to admit to neurotic feelings or aggressiveness exhibited exaggerated blood pressure reactivity to two experimental tasks. Moreover, relative to their level of heightened physiologic arousal, subjects in this subgroup reported little negative affect in response to the tasks, which further suggests that they deny or suppress their feelings. The similarity of the personality pattern of these cardiovascularly reactive FH+ individuals to that sometimes found among individuals with EH is discussed.

RESUMO

Thirty subjects with a family history of hypertension and 28 subjects without such a history performed a Stroop Color-Word Interference task, a mental arithmetic task (serial subtraction of sevens), and a shock avoidance task (repeating digits backward while expecting to be shocked for mistakes). Systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate were recorded while subjects anticipated, undertook, and recovered from the shock avoidance task and undertook and recovered from the Stroop and mental arithmetic tasks. It was found that compared to nonfamily history subjects, family history subjects manifested reliably greater cardiovascular reactivity during each task and in anticipation of the shock avoidance task. These results are congruent with the notion that excessive sympathetic nervous system reactivity-possibly genetically determined-is involved in the development of some form of essential hypertension. Further, the results indicated that family history subjects manifested greater consistency, or stereotypy, of cardiovascular response across the experimental tasks than nonfamily history subjects. The possible role of cardiovascular stereotypy in the development of essential hypertension is also discussed.
