RESUMO

The productivity of herds may be negatively affected by inbreeding depression, and it is important to know how intense is this effect on the livestock performance. We performed a comprehensive analysis involving five Zebu breeds reared in Brazil to estimate inbreeding depression in productive and reproductive traits. Inbreeding depression was estimated for 13 traits by including the individual inbreeding rate as a linear covariate in the standard genetic evaluation models. For all breeds and for almost all traits (no effect was observed on gestation length), the performance of the animals was compromised by an increase in inbreeding. The average inbreeding depression was -0.222% and -0.859% per 1% of inbreeding for linear regression coefficients scaled on the percentage of mean (ßm ) and standard deviation (ßσ ), respectively. The means for ßm (and ßσ ) were -0.269% (-1.202%) for weight/growth traits and -0.174% (-0.546%) for reproductive traits. Hence, inbreeding depression is more pronounced in weight/growth traits than in reproductive traits. These findings highlight the need for the management of inbreeding in the respective breeding programmes of the breeds studied here.

RESUMO

The study reported here evaluated genotype × environment interaction in individual performance and progeny tests in beef cattle. Genetic parameters for final weight (FW), ADG, and scrotal circumference (SC) of 33,013 Nellore young bulls tested on pasture or in feedlots were analyzed. The posterior means (and highest posterior density interval with 90% of samples [HPD90]) of heritability for traits measured on pasture-raised and feedlot-raised animals were 0.44 (HPD90 = 0.40 to 0.48) and 0.50 (HPD90 = 0.43 to 0.56) for FW, 0.26 (HPD90 = 0.23 to 0.29) and 0.26 (HPD90 = 0.20 to 0.32) for ADG, and 0.53 (HPD90 = 0.48 to 0.59) and 0.65 (HPD90 = 0.55 to 0.74) for SC, respectively. The posterior means (and HPD90) of genetic correlations for FW, ADG, and SC on pasture and in feedlots were 0.75 (HPD90 = 0.66 to 0.87), 0.49 (HPD90 = 0.31 to 0.66), and 0.89 (HPD90 = 0.83 to 0.97), respectively. When the selection intensity was kept the same for both the environments, the greatest direct responses for FW and ADG were exhibited by the animals reared and selected in feedlots. The correlated responses relative to production on pasture and based on selection in feedlots were similar to the direct responses, whereas the correlated responses for production in feedlots and based on selection on pasture were lower than the direct responses. When the selection intensity on pasture was higher than the selection intensity in feedlots, the responses to direct selection were similar for both the environments and correlated responses obtained in feedlots by selection on pasture were similar to the direct responses in feedlots. Analyses of few or poor indicators of genotype × environment interaction result in incorrect interpretations of its existence and implications. The present work demonstrated that traits with lower heritability are more susceptible to genotype × environment interaction and that selection intensity plays an important role in the study of genotype × environment interaction in beef cattle.

RESUMO

Records of 17,141 Nellore cattle participating in cattle championships, born from 1994-2009, were used to estimate genetic parameters between animal rank in cattle championships, evaluated from weaning to 36 months of age as repeated traits, and growth, fertility, and carcass traits, evaluated at 365 days of age as single traits. Two traits were defined for animal rank in cattle championships: value 1 was attributed to animals ranked from 1st to 3rd place within the age category, and value 0 was assigned to the remaining animals (TOP3). Value 1 was attributed to animals ranked from 1st to 5th place within the age category and value 0 was assigned to the remaining animals (TOP5). The (co)variance components were estimated based on Bayesian inference under a 2-trait threshold-linear animal model. The posterior means of heritability estimated for TOP3 and TOP5 were 0.182 ± 0.010 and 0.260 ± 0.012, respectively, and their repeatabilities were 0.341 ± 0.007 and 0.400 ± 0.007, respectively. High-ranking animals generally presented higher breeding values for body weight, height, body length, and heart girth. The phenotypic correlations indicate that judges of cattle championships primarily rank animals based on weight and heart girth.

RESUMO

Zebu breeds play an important role in cattle production systems in Brazil. To assess the genetic variability from animals in the Herd Books of Nelore, Gir and Guzerat breeds, generation intervals, inbreeding, effective population size and parameters of gene origin (effective number of founders, ancestors and founder genomes) were calculated using pedigree records from 1938 to 1998. Breed subdivision was quantified by Wright's F-statistics. Calculations were separately carried out for consecutive 4-year intervals in the period 1979-98. Generation interval was around 8 years for the three breeds. Total inbreeding increased in all the breeds reaching values of 2.13%, 2.28% and 1.75%. Effective population size decreased from 85 to 68 in Nelore, from 70 to 45 in Gir and remained nearly constant around 104 in Guzerat. The quantities assessing the number of contributing ancestors decreased with time in all the breeds, and in the last analysed period the most important ancestor accounted for 14%, 3.1% and 4.1% in Nelore, Gir and Guzerat, respectively. Results indicate that the studied breeds are suffering from a loss of genetic variability which can result in negative effects on breeding and conservation purposes.
