OBJECTIVE:To assess perceptions of self-efficacy to provide care and relate to their patients among nursing students and professionals (academic and nursing assistants) attending an extension workshop at a private university in Buenos Aires, Argentina. METHODOLOGY: Descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative study. The sample consisted of 76 subjects, representing 84.44% of those who participated in the activity. The Caring Efficacy Scale instrument was administered in its Spanish version. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed using Infostat software. Informed consent was given and nophiliatory data were collected. RESULTS: Respondents had a mean age of 37.1 years and were mostly women, single, with children, and with more than five years of work experience. An association was found between not having children, being a student, and having a bachelor's degree with higher scores in the dimensions of empathy (p=0.028), confidence in providing care (p=0.005), and communication skills (p=0.037), respectively. Positive aspects demonstrating humanization in practice were identified. CONCLUSIONS: Moderately positive levels of perceived self-efficacy to provide humanized care were found, with the interpersonal and empathy dimensions being the best and worst rated, respectively. It is necessary to implement training activities in humanized care to avoid depersonalization of caregivers

Eight new species of Embioptera from Brazil are described, diagnosed, and illustrated. For Anisembiidae: Chelicercaachilata Szumik, Pereyra & Juárez, sp. nov.; Saussurembiaborba Szumik, Pereyra & Juárez, sp. nov. For Archembiidae: Archembiaoruma Szumik, sp. nov.; Embolynthaoriximina Szumik, Pereyra & Juárez, sp. nov.; Pararhagadochirbonita Szumik, Pereyra & Juárez, sp. nov., Pararhagadochirmarielleae Szumik, Pereyra & Juárez, sp. nov.; Pararhagadochirpara Szumik, Pereyra & Juárez, sp. nov. For Clothodidae: Chromatoclothodalanga Szumik, Pereyra & Juárez, sp. nov. To clarify the higher classification of the Order and to have an accurate taxonomy, a species catalog and introduction to the four families present in Brazil is also detailed, including phylogenetic relationships, taxonomic actions, composition, distributions, and records maps. Herein, several taxonomic acts are proposed: (1) the synonymy of Chelicerca Ross (= Dactylocerca Ross confirmed junior synonym; = Schizembia Ross syn nov.; = Pelorembia Ross, confirmed junior synonym; = Cryptembia Ross, syn. nov.) and Saussurembia Davis (= Stenembia Ross, syn. nov.). (2) new status and delimitation for family Archembiidae Ross, stat. rev.; subfamily Archembiinae Ross, stat. rev.; subfamily Pachylembiinaestat. rev.; subfamily Scelembiinaestat. rev., and their genera included. (3) Diradiusunicolor (Ross) (Teratembiidae) comb. nov., and (4) new locality records for previously cited species in the region.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The interaction between gut bacterial symbionts and Tephritidae became the focus of several studies that showed that bacteria contributed to the nutritional status and the reproductive potential of its fruit fly hosts. Anastrepha fraterculus is an economically important fruit pest in South America. This pest is currently controlled by insecticides, which prompt the development of environmentally friendly methods such as the sterile insect technique (SIT). For SIT to be effective, a deep understanding of the biology and sexual behavior of the target species is needed. Although many studies have contributed in this direction, little is known about the composition and role of A. fraterculus symbiotic bacteria. In this study we tested the hypothesis that gut bacteria contribute to nutritional status and reproductive success of A. fraterculus males. RESULTS: AB affected the bacterial community of the digestive tract of A. fraterculus, in particular bacteria belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family, which was the dominant bacterial group in the control flies (i.e., non-treated with AB). AB negatively affected parameters directly related to the mating success of laboratory males and their nutritional status. AB also affected males' survival under starvation conditions. The effect of AB on the behaviour and nutritional status of the males depended on two additional factors: the origin of the males and the presence of a proteinaceous source in the diet. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that A. fraterculus males gut contain symbiotic organisms that are able to exert a positive contribution on A. fraterculus males' fitness, although the physiological mechanisms still need further studies.

RESUMO

The corn- and rice-strains of Spodoptera frugiperda exhibit several genetic and behavioral differences and appear to be undergoing ecological speciation in sympatry. Previous studies reported conflicting results when investigating male attraction to pheromone lures in different regions, but this could have been due to inter-strain and/or geographic differences. Therefore, we investigated whether corn- and rice-strain males differed in their response to different synthetic pheromone blends in different regions in North America, the Caribbean and South America. All trapped males were strain-typed by two strain-specific mitochondrial DNA markers. In the first experiment, we found a nearly similar response of corn- and rice-strain males to two different 4-component blends, resembling the corn- and rice-strain female blend we previously described from females in Florida. This response showed some geographic variation in fields in Canada, North Carolina, Florida, Puerto Rico, and South America (Peru, Argentina). In dose-response experiments with the critical secondary sex pheromone component (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate (Z7-12:OAc), we found some strain-specific differences in male attraction. While the response to Z7-12:OAc varied geographically in the corn-strain, rice-strain males showed almost no variation. We also found that the minor compound (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:OAc) did not increase attraction of both strains in Florida and of corn-strain males in Peru. In a fourth experiment, where we added the stereo-isomer of the critical sex pheromone component, (E)-7-dodecenyl acetate, to the major pheromone component (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:OAc), we found that this compound was attractive to males in North Carolina, but not to males in Peru. Overall, our results suggest that both strains show rather geographic than strain-specific differences in their response to pheromone lures, and that regional sexual communication differences might cause geographic differentiation between populations.
