OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic performance and image quality of 1.5-mm slice thickness MRI with deep learning-based image reconstruction (1.5-mm MRI + DLR) compared to routine 3-mm slice thickness MRI (routine MRI) and 1.5-mm slice thickness MRI without DLR (1.5-mm MRI without DLR) for evaluating temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 117 MR image sets comprising 1.5-mm MRI + DLR, 1.5-mm MRI without DLR, and routine MRI from 117 consecutive patients (mean age, 41 years; 61 female; 34 patients with TLE and 83 without TLE). Two neuroradiologists evaluated the presence of hippocampal or temporal lobe lesions, volume loss, signal abnormalities, loss of internal structure of the hippocampus, and lesion conspicuity in the temporal lobe. Reference standards for TLE were independently constructed by neurologists using clinical and radiological findings. Subjective image quality, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were analyzed. Performance in diagnosing TLE, lesion findings, and image quality were compared among the three protocols. RESULTS: The pooled sensitivity of 1.5-mm MRI + DLR (91.2%) for diagnosing TLE was higher than that of routine MRI (72.1%, P < 0.001). In the subgroup analysis, 1.5-mm MRI + DLR showed higher sensitivity for hippocampal lesions than routine MRI (92.7% vs. 75.0%, P = 0.001), with improved depiction of hippocampal T2 high signal intensity change (P = 0.016) and loss of internal structure (P < 0.001). However, the pooled specificity of 1.5-mm MRI + DLR (76.5%) was lower than that of routine MRI (89.2%, P = 0.004). Compared with 1.5-mm MRI without DLR, 1.5-mm MRI + DLR resulted in significantly improved pooled accuracy (91.2% vs. 73.1%, P = 0.010), image quality, SNR, and CNR (all, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The use of 1.5-mm MRI + DLR enhanced the performance of MRI in diagnosing TLE, particularly in hippocampal evaluation, because of improved depiction of hippocampal abnormalities and enhanced image quality.

PURPOSE: Studies on attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are scarce in adults with epilepsy. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for ADHD and determine whether ADHD is directly associated with the risk of suicide in adults with epilepsy. METHODS: ADHD was assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-5 Disorders Clinical Version. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) Plus 5.0.0, Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDIE), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) were also used. Suicide risk was defined as a MINI suicidality score of ≥ 1. Stepwise logistic regression and mediation analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Of the 157 adults with epilepsy, 19 (12.1 %) were diagnosed with ADHD, including inattentive (5.7 %), hyperactive (3.8 %), and combined (2.5 %) types. Thirty-two subjects (20.4 %) had a risk of suicide. ADHD was insignificantly associated with any epilepsy-related factors. The diagnosis of ADHD was not associated with suicide risk independent of NDDIE ≥ 14 and GAD-7 ≥ 7. Mediation effects of ADHD on suicidality using NDDIE ≥ 14 (odds ratio [OR] 2.850, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.398-5.811, p = 0.004) or GAD-7 ≥ 7 (OR 3.240, 95 % CI 1.537-6.828, p = 0.002) were statistically significant, with the proportion mediated being 84.5 % or 92.0 % of the total ADHD effect, respectively. These models were adjusted for age, sex, and composite epilepsy severity scores. CONCLUSIONS: ADHD was diagnosed in 12.1% of adults with epilepsy and was not associated with any epilepsy-related factors. ADHD was indirectly associated with the risk of suicide resulting from depression and anxiety in adults with epilepsy.

Accurate identification of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles is essential for various clinical and research applications, such as transplant matching and drug sensitivities. Recent advances in RNA-seq technology have made it possible to impute HLA types from sequencing data, spurring the development of a large number of computational HLA typing tools. However, the relative performance of these tools is unknown, limiting the ability for clinical and biomedical research to make informed choices regarding which tools to use. Here we report the study design of a comprehensive benchmarking of the performance of 12 HLA callers across 682 RNA-seq samples from 8 datasets with molecularly defined gold standard at 5 loci, HLA-A, -B, -C, -DRB1, and -DQB1. For each HLA typing tool, we will comprehensively assess their accuracy, compare default with optimized parameters, and examine for discrepancies in accuracy at the allele and loci levels. We will also evaluate the computational expense of each HLA caller measured in terms of CPU time and RAM. We also plan to evaluate the influence of read length over the HLA region on accuracy for each tool. Most notably, we will examine the performance of HLA callers across European and African groups, to determine discrepancies in accuracy associated with ancestry. We hypothesize that RNA-Seq HLA callers are capable of returning high-quality results, but the tools that offer a good balance between accuracy and computational expensiveness for all ancestry groups are yet to be developed. We believe that our study will provide clinicians and researchers with clear guidance to inform their selection of an appropriate HLA caller.

Halide solid electrolytes (SEs) have been highlighted for their high-voltage stability. Among the halide SEs, the ionic conductivity has been improved by aliovalent metal substitutions or choosing a ccp-like anion-arranged monoclinic structure (C2/m) over hcp- or bcc-like anion-arranged structures. Here, we present a new approach, hard-base substitution, and its underlying mechanism to increase the ionic conductivity of halide SEs. The oxygen substitution to Li2ZrCl6 (trigonal, hcp) increased the ionic conductivity from 0.33 to 1.3 mS cm-1 at Li3.1ZrCl4.9O1.1 (monoclinic, ccp), while the sulfur and fluorine substitutions were not effective. A systematic comparison study revealed that the energetic stabilization of interstitial sites for Li migration plays a key role in improving the ionic conductivity, and the ccp-like anion sublattice is not sufficient to achieve high ionic conductivity. We further examined the feasibility of the oxyhalide SE for practical and all-solid-state battery applications.

Halide perovskites (HPs) are promising candidates for optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells or light-emitting diodes. Despite recent progress in performance optimization and low-cost manufacturing, their commercialization remains hindered due to structural instabilities. While essential to the development of the technology, the relation between the microscopic properties of HPs and the relevant degradation mechanisms is still not well understood. The sensitivity of HPs toward electron-beam irradiation poses significant challenges for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations of structure and degradation mechanisms at the atomic scale. However, technological advances and the development of direct electron cameras (DECs) have opened up a completely new field of electron microscopy: four-dimensional scanning TEM (4D-STEM). From a 4D-STEM dataset, it is possible to extract not only the intensity signal for any STEM detector geometry but also the phase information of the specimen. This work aims to show the potential of 4D-STEM, in particular, electron exit-wave phase reconstructions via focused probe ptychography as a low-dose and dose-efficient technique to image the atomic structure of beam-sensitive HPs. The damage mechanism under conventional irradiation is described and atomically resolved almost aberration-free phase images of three all-inorganic HPs, CsPbBr3, CsPbIBr2, and CsPbI3, are presented with a resolution down to the aperture-constrained diffraction limit.

The electrical response of hybrid perovskite devices carries a significant signature from mobile ionic defects, pointing to both opportunities and threats when it comes to functionality, performance and stability of these devices. Despite its importance, the interpretation of polarization effects due to the mixed ionic-electronic conducting nature of these materials and the quantification of their ionic conductivities still poses conceptual and practical challenges, even for the equilibrium situation. In this study, we address these questions and investigate the electrical response of horizontal devices based on methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI) close to equilibrium conditions. We discuss the interpretation of DC polarization and impedance spectroscopy measurements in the dark, based on calculated and fitted impedance spectra obtained using equivalent circuit models that account for the mixed conductivity of the perovskite and for the effect of device geometry. Our results show that, for horizontal structures with a gap width between the metal electrodes in the order of tens of microns, the polarization behavior of MAPI is well described by the charging of the mixed conductor/metal interface, suggesting a Debye length in the perovskite close to 1 nm. We highlight a signature in the impedance response at intermediate frequencies, which we assign to ionic diffusion in the plane parallel to the MAPI/contact interface. By comparing the experimental impedance results with calculated spectra for different circuit models, we discuss the potential role of multiple mobile ionic species and rule out a significant contribution from iodine exchange with the gas phase in the electrical response of MAPI close to equilibrium. This study helps to clarify the measurement and interpretation of mixed conductivity and polarization effects in hybrid perovskites with immediate relevance to the characterization and development of transistors, memristors and solar cells based on this class of materials as well as other mixed conductors.

Mixing a sterically bulky, electron-transporting host material into a conventional single host-guest emissive layer is demonstrated to suppress phase separation of the host matrix while increasing the efficiency and operational lifetime of deep-blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) with chromaticity coordinates of (0.14, 0.15). The bulky host enables homogenous mixing of the molecules comprising the emissive layer while suppressing single host aggregation; a significant loss channel of nonradiative recombination. By controlling the amorphous phase of the host-matrix morphology, the mixed-host device achieves a significant reduction in nonradiative exciton decay, resulting in 120 ± 6% increase in external quantum efficiency relative to an analogous, single-host device. In contrast to single host PHOLEDs where electrons are transported by the host and holes by the dopants, both charge carriers are conducted by the mixed host, reducing the probability of exciton annihilation, thereby doubling of the deep-blue PHOLED operational lifetime. These findings demonstrate that the host matrix morphology affects almost every aspect of PHOLED performance.

PURPOSE: To determine whether sex affects the relationship between aggression and symptoms of depression and anxiety in adults with refractory focal epilepsy. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 85 adults with refractory focal seizures, which are defined as one or more seizures recurring per month even when the patient is treated with two or more antiseizure medications. We used the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (AQ) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to evaluate aggression and symptoms of depression and anxiety, respectively. We performed multivariate linear regression and analysis of covariance with interaction terms. HADS-depression and HADS-anxiety scores were separately evaluated to avoid multicollinearity between both of them. RESULTS: The HADS-depression and HADS-anxiety scores, male sex, an antiseizure medication load of ≥3, and the use of pregabalin were independently correlated with at least one of the AQ total and subscale scores. These models for depressive and anxiety symptoms explained 34.2% and 32.5%, respectively, of the variance of the AQ total score. Although the AQ total scores did not differ between the sexes, sex significantly affected the relationships between aggression and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Specifically, HADS-depression and HADS-anxiety scores were positively associated with the AQ total scores, especially scores of verbal aggression and anger subtypes, in men but not in women. CONCLUSIONS: These findings support the importance of including anger management and other strategies targeted toward aggression in the development of psychological interventions to reduce anxiety and depression in adults with refractory focal epilepsy. Tailoring those interventions to the needs of males and females will be important to consider. .

PURPOSE: We evaluated whether the relationship between general self-efficacy and depressive symptoms in patients with epilepsy differed depending on age, sex, and seizure status. METHODS: This multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted on 299 adults with epilepsy, using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the General Self-efficacy Scale (GSES). We performed stepwise linear regression analysis and analysis of covariance with interaction terms. RESULTS: The stepwise linear regression analysis showed that BDI scores were negatively correlated with GSES scores and positively correlated with age ≥ 40 years, unemployed status, recurrence of generalized or focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS or FBTCS), and antiseizure medication polytherapy. The final model explained 38.9% of the variance in BDI scores. The analysis of covariance revealed that the moderating effect of GSES scores on BDI scores was less in subjects who had seizure freedom for at least 1 year than in those who did not. In contrast, the moderating effect of GSES scores on BDI scores was greater in subjects who had an age ≥ 40 years and those who experienced GTCS or FBTCS during the previous year than in those who did not. The negative relationship between GSES and BDI scores tended to be stronger in men than in women, but it did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.098). All models were adjusted by significant factors in the linear regression analysis of BDI scores. CONCLUSIONS: The negative relationship between general self-efficacy and depressive symptoms may be stronger in older patients and patients with poorer seizure outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: We determined whether the severity of sleep apnea is associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and whether symptoms of OSA, other than respiratory events, are associated with depression and anxiety symptoms. METHODS: Depressive and anxiety symptoms were defined as a Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score of ≥10 and a Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 score of ≥8, respectively. Sleep apnea severity and rapid eye movement-related OSA were evaluated using the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Subjective symptoms of OSA were assessed using the Sleep Apnea Severity Questionnaire (SASQ). We conducted multivariate logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: We included 1390 adult patients with OSA (80.4% men) and 125 control subjects with primary snoring. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were present in 15.5% and 14.4% of patients with OSA, respectively. The prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms did not differ between OSA and control subjects after controlling for age and sex. Severe OSA, defined as an AHI score of ≥30, was significantly less likely than mild OSA to be associated with the presence of depression and anxiety symptoms in both the unadjusted and adjusted models (models were adjusted by age, sex, medical comorbidities, history of psychiatric disorders, and daytime sleepiness). By contrast, OSA symptoms assessed using the SASQ were positively correlated with the presence of depression and anxiety symptoms in both the unadjusted and adjusted models. Specifically, nocturnal awakening and morning waking symptoms, but not nocturnal breathing difficulties, were positively correlated with the presence of depression and anxiety symptoms. Subjects with rapid eye movement-related OSA were more likely to have depressive symptoms, but not anxiety, than those without. CONCLUSIONS: Symptoms of depression and anxiety were negatively correlated with the severity of sleep apnea but positively correlated with nocturnal awakening and early morning symptoms of OSA.

OBJECTIVE: We developed and investigated the feasibility of a machine learning-based automated rating for the 2 cardinal symptoms of Parkinson disease (PD): resting tremor and bradykinesia. METHODS: Using OpenPose, a deep learning-based human pose estimation program, we analyzed video clips for resting tremor and finger tapping of the bilateral upper limbs of 55 patients with PD (110 arms). Key motion parameters, including resting tremor amplitude and finger tapping speed, amplitude, and fatigue, were extracted to develop a machine learning-based automatic Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) rating using support vector machine (SVM) method. To evaluate the performance of this model, we calculated weighted κ and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) between the model and the gold standard rating by a movement disorder specialist who is trained and certified by the Movement Disorder Society for UPDRS rating. These values were compared to weighted κ and ICC between a nontrained human rater and the gold standard rating. RESULTS: For resting tremors, the SVM model showed a very good to excellent reliability range with the gold standard rating (κ 0.791; ICC 0.927), with both values higher than that of nontrained human rater (κ 0.662; ICC 0.861). For finger tapping, the SVM model showed a very good reliability range with the gold standard rating (κ 0.700 and ICC 0.793), which was comparable to that for nontrained human raters (κ 0.627; ICC 0.797). CONCLUSION: Machine learning-based algorithms that automatically rate PD cardinal symptoms are feasible, with more accurate results than nontrained human ratings. CLASSIFICATION OF EVIDENCE: This study provides Class II evidence that machine learning-based automated rating of resting tremor and bradykinesia in people with PD has very good reliability compared to a rating by a movement disorder specialist.

PURPOSE: The potential benefit of perampanel for sleep disturbances is unknown. This study determined whether insomnia is less prevalent and less severe in patients with epilepsy (PWE) who take perampanel as an adjuvant. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in adults with epilepsy. Insomnia in patients treated or not treated with perampanel was diagnosed according to the criteria of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, the third edition (ICSD-3) and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Patients were also scored on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and the groups were compared by stepwise linear or logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-six PWE were included in the study: 31 patients (24.6%) were taking perampanel. Insomnia was diagnosed in 15.9% and 20.6% of all patients according to the ICSD-3 and an ISI score of ≥15, respectively. Agreement between the two diagnostic methods was moderate (Cohen's kappa, 0.470). In a stepwise logistic regression model, insomnia diagnosed by either method was negatively associated with perampanel use (P<0.05) but positively correlated with depressive symptoms, anxiety, and duration of epilepsy. In a stepwise linear regression model, ISI scores correlated negatively with perampanel use (P=0.004) but positively with depressive symptoms (P<0.001) and anxiety (P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Insomnia is less prevalent and less severe in PWE treated with perampanel independent of depressive symptoms, which will be helpful for treating PWE and comorbid sleep disturbances.

Benzofurocarbazole moieties are commonly used donor structures in the design of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. However, only 5 H-benzofuro[3,2-c]carbazole (34BFCz) has been reported and, to the best of our knowledge, no other benzofurocarbazole derivatives have been covered in the literature. In the present study, two further benzofurocarbazole moieties, 12 H-benzofuro[3,2-a]carbazole (12BFCz) and 7 H-benzofuro[2,3-b]carbazole (23BFCz), have been synthesized to investigate the effect of the donor structure on the photophysics and device parameters of TADF emitters. Two benzofurocarbazole-derived TADF emitters, 12-(2-(4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)phenyl)-12 H-benzofuro[3,2-a]carbazole (o12BFCzTrz) and 7-(2-(4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)phenyl)-7 H-benzofuro[2,3-b]carbazole (o23BFCzTrz), have been compared with 5-(2-(4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)phenyl)-5 H-benzofuro[3,2-c]carbazole (oBFCzTrz). The benzofurocarbazole donor structure governs the TADF characteristics, such as charge-transfer property and emission color. The 12BFCz donor has proved to be effective in blue-shifting the emission color, and 34BFCz has proven useful for improving the external quantum efficiency (EQE). The 12BFCz-derived o12BFCzTrz showed blue-shifted color coordinates of (0.159, 0.288), compared to (0.178, 0388) for o23BFCzTrz and (0.169, 0.341) for oBFCzTrz. The 34BFCz-derived oBFCzTrz exhibited an EQE of 22.9 %, compared to 19.2 % for o12BFCzTrz and 21.1 % for o23BFCzTrz.

A high-purity methylammonium lead iodide complex with intercalated dimethylformamide (DMF) molecules, CH3 NH3 PbI3 ⋅DMF, is introduced as an effective precursor material for fabricating high-quality solution-processed perovskite layers. Spin-coated films of the solvent-intercalated complex dissolved in pure dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) yielded thick, dense perovskite layers after thermal annealing. The low volatility of the pure DMSO solvent extended the allowable time for low-speed spin programs and considerably relaxed the precision needed for the antisolvent addition step. An optimized, reliable fabrication method was devised to take advantage of this extended process window and resulted in highly consistent performance of perovskite solar cell devices, with up to 19.8 % power-conversion efficiency (PCE). The optimized method was also used to fabricate a 22.0 cm2 , eight-cell module with 14.2 % PCE (active area) and 8.64 V output (1.08 V/cell).

The present investigation was designed to determine molecular and cellular events involved in anticancer properties of lutein derived from marigold (Tagetes erecta) petals using Human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cell lines. In vitro experiments demonstrated that lutein at concentration of 10 µM significantly inhibited proliferation of HeLa cells by up to 62.85% after 24 h of treatment and 84.85% after 48 h of treatment. In addition, lutein inhibited proliferation of HeLa cells in a dose-dependent manner by inducing apoptosis. Lutein-treated HeLa cells also showed enhanced accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) correlated with significant downregulation of Bcl-2 (anti-apoptotic) expression and upregulation of Bax (pro-apoptotic) expression. Furthermore, lutein mediated activation of caspase-3 and imbalance between Bax and Bcl-2 expression, causing significant loss of mitochondrial membrane potential of HeLa cells. TUNEL assays revealed significant damage of nuclei DNA in lutein-treated HeLa cells, demonstrating a critical role of lutein in the final stage of apoptosis. Taken together, the results indicate that lutein-induced apoptosis of HeLa cells occurs through enhanced ROS production, interaction with mitochondrial factors, and upregulation of caspase-3-mediated pathway, leading to fragmentation of nuclei DNA. Therefore, lutein could be potentially useful as a chemotherapeutic and/or chemopreventive biomolecule against Human cervical carcinoma.

A series of two-dimensionally expanded azulene-core-based π systems have been synthesized with different alkyl chain lengths in the alkoxy moieties connected to the partially oxygen-bridged triarylamine skeletons. The thermal, photophysical, and electronic properties of each compound were evaluated to determine the influence of the alkyl chain length on their effectiveness as hole-transporting materials (HTMs) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). All the synthesized molecules showed promising material properties, including high solubility, the formation of flat and amorphous films, and optimal alignment of energy levels with perovskites. In particular, the derivatives with methyl and n-butyl in the side chains retained amorphous stability up to 233 and 159 °C, respectively. Such short alkoxy chains also resulted in improved electrical device properties. The PSC device fabricated with the HTM with n-butyl side chains showed the best performance with a power conversion efficiency of 18.9 %, which compares favorably with that of spiro-OMeTAD-based PSCs (spiro-OMeTAD=2,2',7,7'-tetrakis[N,N-bis(p-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9'-spirobifluorene).

15, 25, and 35 µm thick meta-polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes are doped with H2SO4 and tested in a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Their performances are compared with those of Nafion membranes. Immersed in 2 M H2SO4, PBI absorbs about 2 mol of H2SO4 per mole of repeat unit. This results in low conductivity and low voltage efficiency (VE). In ex-situ tests, meta-PBI shows a negligible crossover of V3+ and V4+ ions, much lower than that of Nafion. This is due to electrostatic repulsive forces between vanadium cations and positively charged protonated PBI backbones, and the molecular sieving effect of PBI's nanosized pores. It turns out that charge efficiency (CE) of VRFBs using meta-PBI-based membranes is unaffected by or slightly increases with decreasing membrane thickness. Thick meta-PBI membranes require about 100 mV larger potentials to achieve the same charging current as thin meta-PBI membranes. This additional potential may increase side reactions or enable more vanadium ions to overcome the electrostatic energy barrier and to enter the membrane. On this basis, H2SO4-doped meta-PBI membranes should be thin to achieve high VE and CE. The energy efficiency of 15 µm thick PBI reaches 92%, exceeding that of Nafion 212 and 117 (N212 and N117) at 40 mA cm-2.

To develop Pleurotus eryngii varieties with improved medicinal qualities, protoplasts of P. eryngii were mutagenized using 4-nitroquinoleneoxide. The effects of the resulting variant mushrooms on a human cell were evaluated by applying their aqueous extracts to the human hepatoma cell line, HepG2, in vitro and examining any alteration in the proteomes of the treated HepG2. The P. eryngii mutant, NQ2A-12, was selected for its effects on increasing the expression level of Pin1 in HepG2. Pin1 is one of the peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerases known to play an important role in repressing Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. Validity of NQ2A-12 related to Alzheimer's disease was shown with an enhanced expression of Pin1 in a mouse brain tissue by injecting the NQ2A-12 extract. The mutant mushroom, NQ2A-12, could be developed as a new variety of P. eryngii with potential to protect against Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the protection afforded by 635-nm irradiation against ultraviolet (UV)-C-induced apoptosis in primary human gingival fibroblasts (hGFs). BACKGROUND DATA: UV irradiation is known to cause photoaging and cellular apoptosis of skin cells and is considered to be one of the leading causes of skin carcinogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To induce apoptosis, UV-C (100 mJ/cm2) was used to irradiate hGFs. To protect them from apoptosis, pretreatment with 635-nm irradiation was performed for 1 h immediately after cell plating 36 or 48 h before UV-C irradiation. The light source used for irradiation was a continuous-wave 635-nm LED laser emitting at 1 mW/cm2. Experimental samples were selected 24 h after UV-C irradiation. To measure the numbers of apoptotic cells, MTT assay and flow cytometric analyses were performed. For histomorphologic findings, Diff-Quick staining was carried out. Also, the activities and mRNA expression of caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9 were measured. RESULTS: In the present study, the number of apoptotic cells declined in the cells that were pretreated with 635-nm light irradiation in a time-dependent manner. In addition, the activities and mRNA expression of caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9 were significantly recovered by pretreatment with 635-nm irradiation. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that 635-nm visible light irradiation may be used as a protective tool to prevent UV-C-induced apoptosis.
