RESUMO

Marine ecosystems are rich in "omega-3" long-chain (C20-24) polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA). Their production has been historically accepted to derive mostly from marine microbes. This long-standing dogma has been challenged recently by the discovery that numerous invertebrates, mostly with an aquatic life-style, have the enzyme machinery necessary for the de novo biosynthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and, from them, LC-PUFA. The key breakthrough was the detection in these animals of enzymes called "methyl-end desaturases" enabling PUFA de novo biosynthesis. Moreover, other enzymes with pivotal roles in LC-PUFA biosynthesis, including front-end desaturases and elongation of very long- chain fatty acids proteins, have been characterised in several non-vertebrate animal phyla. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the complement and functions of these gene/protein families in aquatic animals, particularly invertebrates and fish. Therefore, we expand and re-define our previous revision of the LC-PUFA biosynthetic enzymes present in chordates to animals as a whole, discussing how key genomic events have determined the diversity and distribution of desaturase and elongase genes in different taxa. We conclude that both invertebrates and fish display active, but markedly different, LC-PUFA biosynthetic gene networks that result from a complex evolutionary path combined with functional diversification and plasticity.

RESUMO

A rectenna, standing for a rectifying antenna, is an apparatus which generates d.c. electricity from electric fluctuations. It is expected to realize wireless power transmission as well as energy harvesting from environmental radio waves. To realize such rectification, devices that are made up of internal atomic asymmetry such as an asymmetric junction have been necessary so far. Here we report a material that spontaneously generates electricity by rectifying environmental fluctuations without using atomic asymmetry. The sample is a common superconductor without lowered crystalline symmetry, but, just by putting it in an asymmetric magnetic environment, it turns into a rectifier and starts generating electricity. Superconducting vortex strings only annihilate and nucleate at surfaces, and this allows the bulk electrons to feel surface fluctuations in an asymmetric environment: a vortex rectenna. The rectification and generation can be switched on and off with only a slight change in temperature or external magnetic fields.

RESUMO

Superconductivity is ubiquitous as evidenced by the observation in many crystals including carrier-doped oxides and diamond. Amorphous solids are no exception. However, it remains to be discovered in quasicrystals, in which atoms are ordered over long distances but not in a periodically repeating arrangement. Here we report electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific-heat measurements of Al-Zn-Mg quasicrystal, presenting convincing evidence for the emergence of bulk superconductivity at a very low transition temperature of [Formula: see text] K. We also find superconductivity in its approximant crystals, structures that are periodic, but that are very similar to quasicrystals. These observations demonstrate that the effective interaction between electrons remains attractive under variation of the atomic arrangement from periodic to quasiperiodic one. The discovery of the superconducting quasicrystal, in which the fractal geometry interplays with superconductivity, opens the door to a new type of superconductivity, fractal superconductivity.

RESUMO

Empirically determined noninvasive ventilation (NIV) settings may not achieve optimal ventilatory support. Some ventilators include monitoring modules to assess ventilatory quality. We conducted a bench-to-bedside study to assess the ventilatory quality of the VPAPIII-ResLink (ResMed, North Ryde, Australia). We tested the accuracy of minute ventilation (MV) and leak calculations given by VPAPIII-ResLink compared to those measured by a bench model at varied leak levels and ventilator settings. We systematically assessed NIV efficacy using this system from 2003 to 2006. Ventilation was considered inadequate if leak (>24 L x min(-1)), continuous desaturation (>30% of the trace) or desaturation dips (>3%) were present. On the bench test, both methods were highly correlated (r = 0.947, p>0.0001 and r = 0.959, p<0.0001 for leak and MV, respectively). We performed 222 assessments in 169 patients (aged 66.42+/-16 yrs, 100 males). Abnormalities were detected on 147 (66%) out of 222 occasions. Leak was the most common abnormality (34.2%) followed by desaturation dips (23.8%). The most effective therapeutic solutions were a chin strap if leak was detected (61.2%) and expiratory positive airway pressure increase for desaturation dips (59.5%). In 15.7% of cases, when abnormalities persisted, a polygraphy was performed. The systematic use of this device enables NIV to be optimised, limiting the indication of sleep studies to complex cases.

RESUMO

The authors describe in bulk, with the support of some maps, the main traditional groups of foci in Zaïre, extreme situations compared with the period 1930-1987. They indicate the distribution of glossinae according to the ultimate knowledge, as well as the evolution by groups of foci of sleeping sickness endemic for the last 10 years. Based on the most commonly accepted hypothesis, they explain the heterogeneous distribution of the active foci despite the omnipresence of glossinae, the low prevalence usually met, and why outbreaks occurred. Taking into account the actual development of the biochemical, immunological and biological technics as well as the fact that Zaïre, important endemic area, has not been yet correctly studied in such a field, the authors call for deeper epidemiological research.
