RESUMO

Despite the challenges, neutron resonance spin echo still holds the promise to improve upon neutron spin echo for the measurement of slow dynamics in materials. We present a bootstrap, radio frequency neutron spin flipper using high temperature superconducting technology capable of flipping neutron spin with either nonadiabatic or adiabatic modes. A frequency of 2 MHz has been achieved, which would achieve an effective field integral of 0.35 T m for a meter of separation in a neutron resonance spin echo spectrometer at the current device specifications. In bootstrap mode, the self-cancellation of Larmor phase aberrations can be achieved with the appropriate selection of the polarity of the gradient coils.

We have investigated adsorption-induced deformation in graphene oxide framework materials (GOFs) using neutron diffraction at sample pressures up to 140 bar. GOFs, made by the solvothermal reaction of graphite oxide and benzene-1,4-diboronic acid, are a suitable candidate for deformation studies due to their narrow (∼1 nm), monodispersed, slit-shaped pores whose width can be measured by diffraction techniques. We have observed, in situ, a monotonic expansion of the slit width with increasing pressure upon adsorption of xenon, methane, and hydrogen under supercritical conditions. The expansion of ∼4% observed for xenon at a pressure of 48 bar is the largest deformation yet reported for supercritical adsorption on a carbonaceous material. We find that the expansion of the three gases can be mapped onto a common curve based solely on their Lennard-Jones parameters, in a manner similar to a law of corresponding states.

Highly concentrated micelles in CTAB/NaSal solutions with a fixed salt/surfactant ratio of 0.6 have been studied using Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) as a function of temperature and concentration. A worm-like chain model analysis of the SANS data using a combination of a cylindrical form factors for the polydisperse micellar length, circular cross-sectional radius with Gaussian polydispersity, and the structure factor based on a random phase approximation (RPA) suggests that these micelle solutions have a worm-like micellar structure that is independent of the concentration and temperature. The size of the micelle decreases monotonically with increasing temperature and increases with concentration. These observations indicate that large micelles are formed at low temperature and begin to break up to form smaller micelles with increasing temperature.

In this study changes in the locomotory behaviour of the freshwater cladoceran Daphnia magna STRAUS were used as sublethal indicators of toxic copper (Cu) stress. The behavioural responses were determined by a real time image analysis, using a video camera and a Pentium-PC equipped with a standard low cost frame grabber. For a sequence of 50 images per group, where 10 daphnids were moving simultaneously, the trajectories have been reconstructed in binary image sequences. As biological endpoints, we defined the average swimming velocity and the average duration of swimming activity and inactivity. The behavioural responses of the daphnids were analysed under normal conditions (without Cu stress) and after application of sublethal Cu stress of following concentrations (in microg l(-1) (ppb)): C1=1, C2=5, C3=10, C4=20, C5=30. The test organisms were exposed to the Cu concentration for 24 h under static conditions. Already after 9 h of Cu-exposure a significant (*P<0.05) decrease of the average swimming velocity could be observed at the group of the highest Cu concentration (30 ppb). After 13 h of Cu-contamination the swimming velocity was significantly (*P<0.05) reduced at group of 20 ppb Cu-treatment and after 14 h a significant (*P<0.05) decrease of the average swimming velocity could be measured at the group of 10 ppb Cu-treatment. No significant decrease of the swimming velocity could be observed in the 1 and 5 ppb Cu-treatment.
