RESUMO

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to examine the acceptance and predictors of remote education through Internet-based learning among undergraduate nursing students in Jordan. An online survey was used with a sample of 344 students to assess satisfaction with remote education. Responses indicated that undergraduate nursing students were unsatisfied with remote education for several reasons. Many students (n = 188, 55 percent) strongly agreed that problems and obstacles were encountered when they studied subjects electronically. The acceptance of remote education was predicted by educational level (p = .01), device used (p = .001), and Internet reliability p = .001).

RESUMO

AIM: This study aims to investigate the maternal perception and awareness of Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) policies. METHOD: A descriptive, cross-sectional research design was employed. A total of 205 mothers who gave birth in two hospitals in Jordan comprised the sample for this study. A self-administered questionnaire developed from the review of literature and from an audit tool of one of the research settings was used to assess maternal perception of BFHI policies and maternal awareness of breastfeeding. Ethical approval was sought before data collection. FINDINGS: Mothers had moderate levels of awareness of breastfeeding importance; further, most of them mentioned the provision of a policy that addresses all the steps to successful breastfeeding as a major facilitator to breastfeeding. In terms of the BFHI, mothers had a moderate level of awareness of breastfeeding initiatives and showed positive perceptions of BFHI policies. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATION: Improving maternal perception of BFHI policies and maternal awareness of breastfeeding has the potential to affect breastfeeding uptake and management. Future research is recommended in the areas of (1) identification of barriers to breastfeeding among Jordan mothers, (2) determination of the impact of translating maternal awareness to breastfeeding uptake, and (3) effect of infant gender and antenatal care in breastfeeding initiation and maintenance.

RESUMO

Newborn screening is an important public health program that helps save the lives of many infants worldwide. The aim of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to examine the knowledge and attitudes of mothers regarding the newborn screening test in Jordan. A convenient sample of 301 mothers of newborns was interviewed to collect data, using structured questionnaires about their knowledge and attitudes regarding the newborn screening. Most mothers exhibited positive attitudes toward the newborn screening. However, their knowledge about it was only moderate; their knowledge levels contributed positively to their attitudes to the test. The mothers' source of information about the test was a significant predictor for both their level of knowledge and attitudes toward the newborn screening. The healthcare providers, particularly nurses, were identified as the main source of mothers' information in Jordan. The educative role of the health professionals is key and should be better activated to optimize the outcomes of early newborn screening. Changes in current practices regarding mothers' education about NS is recommended to increase the knowledge and enhance attitude about NS among the mothers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The use of illicit substances is a critical international issue that must be addressed by healthcare systems worldwide. Today, the problem of illicit substance use is increasingly becoming a burden on healthcare systems in both developed and developing countries. The aims of this study were: (1) to describe the attitudes of health major undergraduate students (the study participants) toward illicit substance users; (2) to describe the discriminatory behaviors among the study participants toward illicit substance users; and (3) to examine the relationship between the attitudes and the actual discriminatory behaviors of the study participants. METHOD: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used to investigate the attitudes and behaviors of health professional undergraduate students enrolled at university in Jordan. RESULTS: Students who were younger and identified as female were generally more positive toward illicit substance users versus those students who were older and identified as male. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study supported the literature that students who were younger and identified as female were generally more positive toward illicit substance users versus those students who were older and identified as male. It is therefore important to determine whether the type of courses in health majors available for undergraduate students affects their attitudes toward illicit substance users.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study will explore and describe help-seeking behaviors and decision-making processes of Arab Muslim caregivers in Jordan when seeking help for their sick neonates after discharge from Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). This study which will contribute to the global discussion on the reasons/conditions contributing to neonatal mortality. DESIGN AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was used. Two research assistants interviewed 275 identified neonate caregivers by telephone from May 1 to August 30, 2019. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. RESULTS: Caregivers who had a neonate who had been discharged from a NICU were surveyed about the types of condition for which they would seek medical help. The vast majority (98.2%) stated that they would seek help if their child was unconscious and 95.3% reported that they would do so if their child experienced a convulsion. Fewer caregivers (43.3%) stated that abdominal distension (43.3%) would cause them to seek help immediately. CONCLUSION: Recognition of danger signs during the neonatal period was considered poor among neonate caregivers. Using self-management treatments and home remedies delayed appropriate medical treatment for neonate illnesses. Lack of money was identified as the most common reason for delaying going to or not using health facilities. This study highlights the need to create a specialized program to focus on interventions that could reduce neonatal deaths and improve families' help-seeking behaviors in Jordan. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Nurses are required to be well-trained to support caregivers to prioritize neonatal issues (pre and post discharge) that require quick action (minutes versus hours) and which most commonly lead to mortality. Nurses are required to provide appropriate education for caregivers pre-discharge and such teachings could be reinforced during home visits.
