BACKGROUNDS: The overall screening rate for complication of diabetes kidney disease is improving; however, regional variations are increasing. It is necessary to select regions vulnerable to change and understand their characteristics. METHODS: Group-based trajectory analysis was performed to derive change patterns in the complication of diabetes kidney disease screening rate in 244 regions using Community Health Survey data between 2015 and 2019. ANOVA test was conducted to examine the differences in regional characteristics and CVD in each change pattern. RESULTS: The change patterns in complication of diabetes kidney disease screening rate were classified into four groups: high and rapidly increasing (Group 1, 5.2%), steady high (Group 2, 8.2%), moderate and increasing (Group 3, 52.9%), and low and slightly increasing (Group 4, 23.8%). Group 4 had many rural areas and worse socioeconomic status, healthcare systems, health behaviors, and diabetes management, and these regions had higher CVD mortality rates. CONCLUSIONS: Regions where the screening for complication of diabetes kidney disease rate did not improve compared to other regions were vulnerable not only in socioeconomic status, healthcare system, and health behavior, but also in disease management. This suggests the need for local and environmental support, as well as aggressive health service interventions in relatively vulnerable areas.

The most common neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), are the seventh leading cause of mortality and morbidity in developed countries. Clinical observations of NDD patients are characterized by a progressive loss of neurons in the brain along with memory decline. The common pathological hallmarks of NDDs include oxidative stress, the dysregulation of calcium, protein aggregation, a defective protein clearance system, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, neuronal apoptosis, and damage to cholinergic neurons. Therefore, managing this pathology requires screening drugs with different pathological targets, and suitable drugs for slowing the progression or prevention of NDDs remain to be discovered. Among the pharmacological strategies used to manage NDDs, natural drugs represent a promising therapeutic strategy. This review discusses the neuroprotective potential of seaweed and its bioactive compounds, and safety issues, which may provide several beneficial insights that warrant further investigation.

Mild cognitive impairment is a typical symptom of early Alzheimer's disease (AD). Glehnia littoralis (G. littoralis), a medicinal halophyte plant commonly used to treat strokes, has been shown to possess some therapeutic qualities. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective and anti-neuroinflammatory effects of a 50% ethanol extract of G. littoralis (GLE) on lipopolysccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 cells and scopolamine-induced amnesic mice. In the in vitro study, GLE treatment (100, 200, and 400 µg/mL) markedly attenuated the translocation of NF-κB to the nucleus concomitantly with the significant mitigation of the LPS-induced production of inflammatory mediators, including NO, iNOS, COX-2, IL-6, and TNF-α. In addition, the GLE treatment suppressed the phosphorylation of MAPK signaling in the LPS-stimulated BV-2 cells. In the in vivo study, mice were orally administered with the GLE (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg) for 14 days, and cognitive loss was induced via the intraperitoneal injection of scopolamine (1 mg/kg) from 8 to 14 days. We found that GLE treatment ameliorated memory impairment and simultaneously improved memory function in the scopolamine-induced amnesic mice. Correspondingly, GLE treatment significantly decreased the AChE level and upregulated the protein expression of neuroprotective markers, such as BDNF and CREB, as well as Nrf2/HO-1 and decreased the levels of iNOS and COX-2 in the hippocampus and cortex. Furthermore, GLE treatment attenuated the increased phosphorylation of NF-κB/MAPK signaling in the hippocampus and cortex. These results suggest that GLE has a potential neuroprotective activity that may ameliorate learning and memory impairment by regulating AChE activity, promoting CREB/BDNF signaling, and inhibiting NF-κB/MAPK signaling and neuroinflammation.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of different injection sites, including dorsal, cheek, and pectoral fin muscles, on the pharmacological properties of amoxicillin (AMOX) in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) after a single intramuscular (IM) injection of 40 mg/kg. The AMOX concentration was measured using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, followed by a non-compartmental model analysis. The peak serum concentrations (Cmax) achieved 3 h after dorsal, cheek, and pectoral fin IM injections were 202.79, 203.96, and 229.59 µg/mL, respectively. The area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) was 1697.23, 2006.71, and 1846.61 µg/mL·h, respectively. The terminal half-life (t1/2λZ) was prolonged for cheek and pectoral fin IM injections (10.12 and 10.33 h, respectively) compared to dorsal IM injection (8.89 h). In the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic analysis, a higher T > minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and AUC/MIC values were observed after AMOX was injected into the cheek and pectoral fin muscles compared to the dorsal muscle. Muscle residue depletion was below the maximum residue level from day 7 after IM injection at all three sites. These findings suggest that the cheek and pectoral fin sites provide advantages regarding systemic drug exposure and prolonged action compared with the dorsal site.

Contextual congruence, health threat orientation, and digital advertisement type can influence the effectiveness of online health service ads. To examine these effects, a 2 × 2 × 2 online experiment was conducted with contextual similarity as a within-subjects factor. Results suggest that contextual similarity was positively associated with both attitude toward ads and purchase intention. The data also revealed an interaction effect between digital advertising type and health threat orientation: health ads to address issues of immediate concerns enhanced purchase intention, but only in the incongruent context. Implications of the study were also discussed.

The whitening effect of reducing skin pigmentation is one of the most important goals of cosmetics. The purpose of this study was to determine whether Catalpa ovata extract and its fractions have potential as natural skin-lightening agents. Initially, we screened various fractions of Catalpa ovata extract using an in vitro antioxidant assay. Then, the inhibitory effects of C. ovata extract and its fraction on melanogenesis and the related mechanisms were investigated in B16F1 melanoma cells. The results showed that the ethyl acetate fraction (EF) from C. ovata extract markedly inhibited melanin synthesis in a dose-dependent manner at non-toxic concentrations. Furthermore, EF downregulated both the protein and mRNA levels of tyrosinase, which is a specific enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of tyrosine into melanin. We also found that EF decreased the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) at the protein and mRNA levels. EF increased the phosphorylation of ERK and suppressed the phosphorylation of JNK and p38 in ɑ-MSH-induced B16F1 cells. These results indicate that EF can regulate the MAPK pathway. In addition, EF has an anti-melanogenic effect via the downregulation of intracellular cyclic-AMP (cAMP). Nineteen major compounds of EF were identified using LC-MS/MS. Taken together, these results suggest that EF may be a potential anti-melanogenic agent for use in skin-whitening cosmetics and in topical treatments for hyperpigmentation disorders.

The one-pot synthesis process has emerged as an economical synthesis method without the involvement of purification or formation of intermediate compounds. Therefore, nickel nanoparticles were selectively synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method using nickel(II) chloride hexahydrate and borane-ammonia complex as a precursor and reducing agent, respectively. The morphology and crystal growth were observed by controlling the precursor concentration ratio of Ni:AB from 1:0.1 to 1:4 under various temperatures ranging from 80 to 140 degrees. In addition, we observed that the crystal growth rate under the influence of NaCl and KCl resulted in spherical Ni particles with size distributions controlled in the range of 297.65 nm to 1082.15 nm and 358.6 nm to 605 nm, respectively.

BACKGROUND: In April 2014, a ferry carrying 476 passengers sunk on the coast of Korea, resulting in 304 deaths. Of these, 250 were local high school students, and the disaster significantly affected their community. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms and anxiety among Ansan city residents to understand their recovery process after the accident. METHODS: Two cross-sectional surveys (survey 1, after 4-6 months and survey 2, after 16-18 months of disaster) were used to compare prevalence among residents of Ansan city and adjacent cities. Symptoms were determined by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item Scale. RESULTS: A total of 1,773 and 1,748 participants were included in Survey 1 and Survey 2, respectively. Survey 1 showed a significantly higher prevalence of depressive symptoms (19.0%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 16.9-21.1) and anxiety (6.1%; 95% CI, 5.0-7.5) among Ansan city, compared to participants from adjacent cities (depressive symptoms: 14.3%; 95% CI, 12.7-16.1; anxiety: 3.6%; 95% CI, 2.9-4.5). Survey 2 showed a decreased prevalence of depression (15.8%; 95% CI, 14.0-17.9) and anxiety (5.0%; 95% CI, 4.0-6.4) among Ansan city residents. Depressive symptoms and anxiety adjusted odds ratio in survey 2 compared with survey 1 were 0.74 (95% CI 0.62-0.89) and 0.81 (0.60-1.08) among Ansan city, respectively. LIMITATIONS: Cross-sectional study design and lack of pre-disaster baseline data for comparison are limitations of this study. CONCLUSIONS: Psychological distress occurred at a population level, not only among survivors and their families, but also among Ansan city residents indirectly impacted by the traumatic event. Although populations indirectly affected by a disaster show a natural recovery process, timely population-based interventions may be helpful.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the present study was to identify the factors that affect screening for diabetic complications by sex in the community. METHODS: This study used individual-level data from the 2013 Community Health Survey (CHS) for 20,806 (male, 9,958; female, 10,848) adults aged 30 years or older who were diagnosed with diabetes. Community-level data for 253 communities were derived from either CHS or national statistics. A chi-square test and multilevel logistic regression analysis was performed. RESULTS: There were significant differences in the rate of screening for diabetic complications according to individual-level and community-level variables. In the multilevel analysis, the community-level variance ratio of the null model was 7.4% and 9.2% for males and females, respectively. With regard to community-level variables, males were affected by the city type, number of physicians, and their living environment, while females were affected by number of physicians, natural and living environments, and public transportation. CONCLUSIONS: The factors that influenced individual willingness to undergo screening for diabetic complications differed slightly by sex; however, both males and females were more likely to undergo screening when they recognized their health status as poor or when they actively sought to manage their health conditions. Moreover, in terms of community-level variables, both males and females were affected by the number of physicians. It is essential to provide sufficient and ongoing opportunities for education on diabetes and its management through collaboration with local communities and primary care medical centers.

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to investigate the relationship between community residents' infection sensitivity and their levels of preventive behaviors during the 2015 Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak in Korea. METHODS: Seven thousands two hundreds eighty one participants from nine areas in Gyeonggi-do including Pyeongtaek, the origin of the outbreak in 2015 agreed to participate in the survey and the data from 6,739 participants were included in the final analysis. The data on the perceived infection sensitivity were subjected to cluster analysis. The levels of stress, reliability/practice of preventive behaviors, hand washing practice and policy credibility during the outbreak period were analyzed for each cluster. RESULTS: Cluster analysis of infection sensitivity due to the MERS outbreak resulted in classification of participants into four groups: the non-sensitive group (14.5%), social concern group (17.4%), neutral group (29.1%), and overall sensitive group (39.0%). A logistic regression analysis found that the overall sensitive group with high sensitivity had higher stress levels (17.80; 95% confidence interval [CI], 13.77 to 23.00), higher reliability on preventive behaviors (5.81; 95% CI, 4.84 to 6.98), higher practice of preventive behaviors (4.53; 95% CI, 3.83 to 5.37) and higher practice of hand washing (2.71; 95% CI, 2.13 to 3.43) during the outbreak period, compared to the non-sensitive group. CONCLUSIONS: Infection sensitivity of community residents during the MERS outbreak correlated with gender, age, occupation, and health behaviors. When there is an outbreak in the community, there is need to maintain a certain level of sensitivity while reducing excessive stress, as well as promote the practice of preventive behaviors among local residents. In particular, target groups need to be notified and policies need to be established with a consideration of the socio-demographic characteristics of the community.

OBJECTIVES: The disaster of the Sewol ferry that sank at sea off Korea's southern coast of the Yellow Sea on April 16, 2014 was a tragedy that brought grief and despair to the whole country. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mental health effects of this disaster on the community of Ansan, where most victims and survivors resided. METHODS: The self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted 4 to 6 months after the accident using the Korean Community Health Survey system, an annual nationwide cross-sectional survey. Subjects were 7,076 adults (≥19 years) living in two victimized communities in Ansan, four control communities from Gyeonggi-do, Jindo and Haenam near the accident site. Depression, stress, somatic symptoms, anxiety, and suicidal ideation were measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale, Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument, Patient Health Questionnaire-15, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item Scale, respectively. RESULTS: The depression rate among the respondents from Ansan was 11.8%, and 18.4% reported suicidal ideation. Prevalence of other psychiatric disturbances was also higher compared with the other areas. A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed significantly higher odds ratios (ORs) in depression (1.66; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.36 to 2.04), stress (1.37; 95% CI, 1.10 to 1.71), somatic symptoms (1.31; 95% CI, 1.08 to 1.58), anxiety (1.82; 95% CI, 1.39 to 2.39), and suicidal ideation (1.33; 95% CI, 1.13 to 1.56) compared with Gyeonggi-do. In contrast, the accident areas of Jindo and Haenam showed the lowest prevalence and ORs. CONCLUSIONS: Residents in the victimized area of Ansan had a significantly higher prevalence of psychiatric disturbances than in the control communities.
