RESUMO

Apoptotic cell death occurs under normal physiological conditions, such as development, tissue remodeling, and inflammation. Appropriate removal of apoptotic cells by phagocytes and the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10 are important mechanisms for maintaining tissue homeostasis. Apoptotic cell phagocytosis is mediated by several phosphatidylserine recognition receptors on non-professional or professional phagocytes, such as neighboring epithelial cells or macrophages. Stabilin-2 is reported as a phosphatidylserine recognition receptor for apoptotic cell phagocytosis, and its downstream signaling pathway for cytoskeletal rearrangement for phagocytosis is well known. However, the mechanisms for stabilin-2-mediated IL-10 production has not yet been reported. In this study, we aimed to investigate stabilin-2 receptor-mediated IL-10 transcription regulation signaling pathway.

Limited data exist about the comparative immune cell population profile determined by cytometry by time-of-flight (CyTOF) analysis between active tuberculosis (TB) and latent TB infection (LTBI). In this study, we performed CyTOF analysis using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to compare the differential immune cellular profile between active TB and LTBI. A total of 51 subjects (active TB [n = 34] and LTBI [n = 17]) were included. CyTOF analysis of 16 subjects (active TB [n = 8] and LTBI [n = 8]) identified a significantly higher Th17-like cell population in active TB than in LTBI. This finding was validated in the remaining 35 subjects (active TB [n = 26] and LTBI [n = 9]) using flow cytometry analysis, which consistently reveals a higher percentage of Th17 cell population in active TB (p = 0.032). The Th1/Th17 ratio represented good ability to discriminate between active TB and LTBI (AUC = 0.812). Among patients with active TB, the Th17 cell percentage was found to be lower in more advanced forms of the disease. Additionally, Th17 cell percentage positively correlated with the levels of IL-6 and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, respectively. In conclusion, CyTOF analysis of PBMCs showed a significantly higher percentage of Th17 cells in active TB although fairly similar immune cell populations between active TB and LTBI were observed.

Extracellular matrix proteins are associated with metabolically healthy adipose tissue and regulate inflammation, fibrosis, angiogenesis, and subsequent metabolic deterioration. In this study, we demonstrated that transforming growth factor-beta (TGFBI), an extracellular matrix (ECM) component, plays an important role in adipose metabolism and browning during high-fat diet-induced obesity. TGFBI KO mice were resistant to adipose tissue hypertrophy, liver steatosis, and insulin resistance. Furthermore, adipose tissue from TGFBI KO mice contained a large population of CD11b+ and CD206+ M2 macrophages, which possibly control adipokine secretion through paracrine mechanisms. Mechanistically, we showed that inhibiting TGFBI-stimulated release of adipsin by Notch-1-dependent signaling resulted in adipocyte browning. TGFBI was physiologically bound to Notch-1 and stimulated its activation in adipocytes. Our findings revealed a novel protective effect of TGFBI deficiency in obesity that is realized via the activation of the Notch-1 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN), a cell-surface glycoprotein, is overexpressed in several cancer types. EMMPRIN induces a metastatic phenotype by triggering the production of matrix metalloproteinase proteins (MMPs) such as MMP1 and MMP2, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in cancer cells and the surrounding stromal cells. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression and role of EMMPRIN in osteosarcoma. METHODS: The level of EMMPRIN expression was evaluated using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in 6 tumor-derived osteosarcoma cell lines and compared with that in normal osteoblasts. To study the prognostic significance of EMMPRIN expression, immunohistochemistry was carried out in prechemotherapy biopsies of 54 patients. siRNA knockdown of EMMPRIN in SaOS-2 cells was conducted to explore the role of EMMPRIN. To study the role of EMMPRIN in tumor-stromal interaction in MMP production and invasion, co-culture of SaOS-2 cells with osteoblasts and fibroblasts was performed. Osteosarcoma 143B cells were injected into the tail vein of BALB/c mice and lung metastasis was analyzed. RESULTS: EMMRIN mRNA expression was significantly higher in 5 of 6 (83%) tumor-derived cells than in MG63 cells. 90% of specimens (50/54) stained positive for EMMPRIN by immunohistochemistry, and higher expression of EMMPRIN was associated with shorter metastasis-free survival (p = 0.023). Co-culture of SaOS-2 with osteoblasts resulted in increased production of pro-MMP2 and VEGF expression, which was inhibited by EMMPRIN-targeting siRNA. siRNA knockdown of EMMPRIN resulted in decreased invasion. EMMPRIN shRNA-transfected 143B cells showed decreased lung metastasis in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that EMMPRIN acts as a mediator of osteosarcoma metastasis by regulating MMP and VEGF production in cancer cells as well as stromal cells. EMMPRIN could serve as a therapeutic target in osteosarcoma.

Antigen-presenting cells (APCs), including macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs), play a crucial role in bridging innate and adaptive immunity; thereby, innate immune checkpoint blockade-based therapy is an attractive approach for the induction of sustainable tumor-specific immunity. The interaction between the cluster of differentiation 47 (CD47) on tumor and signal-regulatory protein alpha (SIRPα) on phagocytic cells inhibits the phagocytic function of APCs, acting as a "don't eat me" signal. Accordingly, CD47 blockade is known to increase tumor cell phagocytosis, eliciting tumor-specific CD8+ T-cell immunity. Here, we introduced a nature-derived nanocage to deliver SIRPγ for blocking of antiphagocytic signaling through binding to CD47 and combined it with prophagocytic stimuli using a metabolic reprogramming reagent for APCs (CpG-oligodeoxynucleotides). Upon delivering the clustered SIRPγ variant, the nanocage showed enhanced CD47 binding profiles on tumor cells, thereby promoting active engulfment by phagocytes. Moreover, combination with CpG potentiated the prophagocytic ability, leading to the establishment of antitumorigenic surroundings. This combination treatment could competently inhibit tumor growth by invigorating APCs and CD8+ T-cells in TMEs in B16F10 orthotopic tumor models, known to be resistant to CD47-targeting therapeutics. Collectively, enhanced delivery of an innate immune checkpoint antagonist with metabolic modulation stimuli of immune cells could be a promising strategy for arousing immune responses against cancer.

Several studies have suggested that extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling and the microenvironment are tightly associated with adipogenesis and adipose angiogenesis. In the present study, we demonstrated that transforming growth factor-beta induced (TGFBI) suppresses angiogenesis stimulated by adipocyte-conditioned medium (Ad-CM), both in vitro and in vivo. TGFBI knockout (KO) mice exhibited increased numbers of blood vessels in adipose tissue, and blood vessels from these mice showed enhanced infiltration into Matrigel containing Ad-CM. The treatment of Ad-CM-stimulated SVEC-10 endothelial cells with TGFBI protein reduced migration and tube-forming activity. TGFBI protein suppressed the activation of the Src and extracellular signaling-related kinase signaling pathways of these SVEC-10 endothelial cells. Our findings indicated that TGFBI inhibited adipose angiogenesis by suppressing the activation of Src and ERK signaling pathways, possibly because of the stimulation of the angiogenic activity of endothelial cells.

OBJECTIVES: The Cat Eye Syndrome Critical Region, Candidate 1 (CECR1) gene encoding adenosine deaminase 2 (ADA2) is mainly expressed by macrophages. Given the immunomodulatory functions of butyrate, we examined the effect of butyrate on CECR1 expression of macrophages and the relationship between ADA2 and M1/M2 macrophages-associated chemokines in pleural fluid of patients with tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE). METHODS: Expression of CECR1 was evaluated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated and/or butyrate treated THP-1 cells. The role of CECR1 on butyrate-induced immune response was evaluated using siRNA transfected THP-1 cells. M1/M2 chemokines and ADA2 were measured in pleural fluid of patients with TPE. RESULTS: Butyrate promoted the expression of CECR1 and M2-macrophage markers in THP-1 cells. CECR1 was found to be involved in regulating M2 polarization in THP-1 cells treated with LPS and butyrate. Among chemokines measured in pleural fluid of patients with TPE, there was a significant negative correlation between CCL21 and ADA2 levels and between CCL25 and ADA2 levels, and a significant positive correlation between TGF-ß and ADA2 levels and between IL-22 and ADA2 levels. CONCLUSIONS: CECR1 played an important role in the butyrate-modulated inflammatory responses in LPS-stimulated THP-1 cells. ADA2 may exert anti-inflammatory effects during the process of pleural inflammation in patients with TPE.

BACKGROUND: Ellagic acid is a natural dietary compound found in several berries and fruits. It inhibits fibrosis, inflammation and carcinogenesis. We tried to find out what role ellagic acid plays in pancreatic cancer to see if it can be used as an adjuvant for chemotherapy. METHODS: Three pancreatic cancer cell lines, PANC-1, AsPC-1, and MIA PaCA-2, were used. Cell growth was measured by MTT assay. Activities of caspase-3 and caspase-8, and caspase-9 were evaluated to determine the apoptosis pathway. Epithelial to mesenchymal transition was identified through mRNA expression of associated genes, which were transforming growth factor-beta, matrix metalloproteinase-2 and matrix metalloproteinase-9. Quantitative real time PCR was used to verify mRNA expression. To determine the effect on migration, transwell system was used. RESULTS: Ellagic acid inhibits pancreatic cancer cell growth by stimulating apoptosis. Apoptosis induced by ellagic acid in pancreatic cancer cells, is mediated by the activation of caspase-3 and caspase-9, and not caspase-8. Ellagic acid also suppresses migration via the inhibition of epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) in pancreatic cancer cells. Ellagic acid decreased the expression levels of transforming growth factor-beta, matrix metalloproteinase-2 and matrix metalloproteinase-9, while it increased that of E-cadherin. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that ellagic acid is useful in pancreatic cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND: The chondroid tumor is generally classified into three types, enchondroma, low-grade chondrosarcoma, and high-grade chondrosarcoma. A histological evaluation of a biopsy sample is the best predictor of the clinical course in most patients with carcinomas or sarcomas. Sometimes serological or molecular markers are used as prediction markers, but there has been no reliable marker for chondroid tumor diagnosis. Clinical and radiological, but not histological features, are still used in the diagnosis and staging of chondroid tumors. During a histopathological diagnosis, it has been difficult to distinguish between benign enchondroma and low-grade chondrosarcoma. To allow for more accurate treatments, new histological biomarkers for the differential diagnosis are needed. METHODS: Twenty-eight cases of enchondromas and thirty-three cases of low-grade chondrosarcoma were selected. Thirteen cases of non-tumorous cartilage were used for the control group, who underwent artificial joint surgery for degenerative arthritis. Surgically removed tissue specimens were formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) stains were performed. RESULTS: Periostin was expressed in chondroid tumors but not in the normal cartilage. Periostin was observed via immunostaining in the cytoplasm but not in the extracellular matrix of enchondroma tissue, and was observed in the cytoplasm and extracellular matrix of low-grade chondrosarcoma. The sensitivity and specificity of these stains were 93.9% and 96.4%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these results, we suggest that periostin could be used as a novel prognostic marker to distinguish between enchondroma and low-grade chondrosarcoma.

This paper describes a community effort to improve earlier versions of the full-text corpus of Genomics & Informatics by semi-automatically detecting and correcting PDF-to-text conversion errors and optical character recognition errors during the first hackathon of Genomics & Informatics Annotation Hackathon (GIAH) event. Extracting text from multi-column biomedical documents such as Genomics & Informatics is known to be notoriously difficult. The hackathon was piloted as part of a coding competition of the ELTEC College of Engineering at Ewha Womans University in order to enable researchers and students to create or annotate their own versions of the Genomics & Informatics corpus, to gain and create knowledge about corpus linguistics, and simultaneously to acquire tangible and transferable skills. The proposed projects during the hackathon harness an internal database containing different versions of the corpus and annotations.

BACKGROUND/AIM: This study was conducted to investigate transforming growth factor beta-induced protein (TGFBI) expression and analyze the clinical and prognostic significance of TGFBI in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated TGFBI expression by immunohistochemistry in 94 patients with OPSCC. For comprehensive analysis, TGFBI expression was subdivided into tumor cell score (T), stroma score (S), and the sum of two scores (TS) calculated using H-score. Clinicopathological features and survival outcomes were compared between groups of high expression and low expression of TGFBI in each area. RESULTS: Overall, 12 patients (12.8%) showed high T score, and 41 patients (43.6%) revealed high S score. Although T score showed no significant difference both in overall survival (OS) (p=0.080) and recurrence free survival (RFS) (p=0.272), high S score patients had significantly worse OS (p=0.003) and worse RFS (p=0.043). High TS score also showed significant association with worse OS (p=0.011) and worse RFS (p=0.021). High S score was an independent prognostic factor predicting shorter OS (HR=6.352, 95%CI=1.206-40.050, p=0.029) and RFS (HR=18.843, 95%CI=1.030-344.799, p=0.048) in the multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: High S score of TGFBI was a significant predictor of poor prognosis in OPSCC. TGFBI could be a useful new predictive and prognostic biomarker in OPSCC.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Periostin exists as an extracellular matrix protein in several carcinomas and is related to metastasis and poor prognosis. It is mainly secreted from cancer associated fibroblasts, and not from carcinoma cells. As a tumor microenvironment component, periostin usually mediates tumor cell stemness, metastasis, angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. This study aimed to examine the role of periostin in chondrosarcoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To evaluate the effect of periostin on the proliferation of chondrosarcoma cells, MTT assay was performed on SW1353 cells and periostin knockdown SW1353 cells. Migration activity was examined using Boyden chamber. RESULTS: Periostin, secreted from chondrosarcoma cells, was found to support proliferation, and maintain stemness and migration of chondrosarcoma cells. Periostin also induced proliferation and migration of lymphatic endothelial cells. CONCLUSION: Periostin plays an important role in chondrosarcoma development and disease progression.

BACKGROUD: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are cells characterized by their self-renewal and tumorigenic potential. The purpose of this study was to discover the role of the delta-like factor 1 (DLK1) in sarcoma. METHODS: mRNA expression of DLK1 from 13 sarcoma cell lines was examined. Isolated CSCs from the tumors were examined using fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) with CD133, the CSC marker, or sphere-forming assay. The relationship between DLK1 and CSCs in sarcoma was examined using cell proliferation and cell invasion assays after they were treated with DLK1 short interfering RNA (siRNA). RESULTS: A high expression of DLK1 mRNA was observed in all sarcoma cell lines. However, CSCs were isolated from over expressed sarcomas of the DLK1 gene, and they have shown to be expressed lower than the wild type. The anti-cancer effects of DLK1 siRNA inhibited cell proliferation and invasion in U2OS, A204, and sw872. In addition, treatment with DLK1 siRNA inhibited cell invasion in sw872 CSCs. DLK1 gene induces tumorigenesis in various sarcoma cells and regulates the invasiveness of liposarcoma. These results suggest that DLK1 could serve as a possible therapeutic target for sarcoma. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that the DLK1 gene induces tumorigenesis in various sarcomas and is associated with invasive mechanism in sarcoma. These results suggest DLK1 could serve as a possible therapeutic target in a variety of sarcomas.

BACKGROUND: Field cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus) is newly emerged as an edible insect in several countries. Anti-inflammatory effect of glycosaminoglycan derived from this cricket on chronic disease animal model such as diabetic mouse has not been fully investigated yet. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the anti-oxidative effect of such glycosaminoglycan on diabetic mouse. METHODS: To discover potential therapeutic agents, field cricket glycosaminoglycan (GbG) was tested in the present study. Its anti-oxidative activities in diabetic mice were determined based on its abilities to reduce glucose, ALT, AST, ALP, LDL-cholesterol and BUN levels. Dung beetle (C. molossus) glycosaminoglycan (CaG) was used as a positive control. Db mice were intraperitoneally administered for 1 month according to their group assignments: 1) normal (DB-Hetero); 2) control (DB-Homo); 3) 5 mg/kg treatment of CaG (CaG5); 4) 5 mg/kg treatment of GbG (GbG5); and 5) 10 mg/kg treatment of metformin (Metformin 10). RESULTS: Blood glucose level decreased after 1st week of treatment with GbG. LDL-cholesterol and alkaline phosphatase levels were also inhibited by GbG. Markers of oxidative damage, such as protein carbonyl content and levels of hepatocellular biomarkers, were reduced in db mice treated with GbG. Especially anti-oxidative activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were significantly increased in GbG treated group compared to those in the control (Db Homo). GbG was composed of heparin disaccharides. Its main N-glycan was identified as Hex9GlcNAc2 (m/z 1905.7) with neutral mono-sugar mainly comprising of hexose and L (+) rhamnose by mass spectroscopy. CONCLUSIONS: Sero-biochemical and hepatocellular anti-oxidant assay results in db mice suggest that cricket (G. bimaculatus) glycosaminoglycan might possess anti-oxidative effect in diabetic state.

Pleural fluid (PF) immune response in anergic tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) patients is poorly understood. This study aimed to compare PF biochemical parameters and chemokine levels between anergic and non-anergic TPE patients. Chemokine arrays, cytokine measurements, and flow cytometry were performed in 58 patients (TPE [non-anergic (n = 32) and anergic (n = 10)] and malignant pleural effusion (MPE) [n = 16]). PF adenosine deaminase 2 (ADA2) levels were significantly lower in anergic TPE patients than in non-anergic TPE patients (p = 0.048). Among the 40 chemokines tested, PF CCL27 levels were significantly higher in anergic TPE patients than in non-anergic TPE and MPE patients (p < 0.001). The percentage of CD4+CCR10+T cells in PF was higher in anergic TPE patients than in non-anergic TPE and MPE patients (p = 0.001). We reported here that CCL27/CCR10 interactions might contribute to pathophysiology in anergic TPE. PF CCL27 and CD4+CCR10+T cells may help in diagnosing TPE in patients with moderate elevation of PF ADA levels.

Blockade of programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) restores T-cell activity and enhances anti-tumor immunity. Screening a phage-displayed peptide library for peptides that selectively bind to PD-L1-overexpressing cells identified two peptides, CLQKTPKQC and CVRARTR (PD-L1Pep-1 and PD-L1Pep-2, respectively) that appeared to block PD-L1. PD-L1Pep-1 and PD-L1Pep-2 preferentially bound to high PD-L1-expressing cells over low PD-L1-expressing cells; binding was further enhanced by interferon-γ, an inducer of PD-L1 expression. Binding affinities of PD-L1Pep-1 and PD-L1Pep-2 were approximately 373 and 281 nM, respectively. Cellular binding of the PD-L1-binding peptides was reduced by silencing PD-L1 gene expression or competition with anti-PD-L1 antibody. PD-L1Pep-1 and PD-L1Pep-2 induced the internalization and downregulated cell surface levels of PD-L1. The PD-L1-binding peptides restored cytokine secretion and T-cell proliferation to cells inhibited by co-culture with tumor cells or culture on PD-L1-coated plates. Intravenously injected PD-L1Pep-1 and PD-L1Pep-2 efficiently homed to tumor tissues, inhibited tumor growth, and increased CD8+/FoxP3+ ratio in mice. The PD-L1-binding peptides in combination with doxorubicin or PD-L1-targeted liposomal doxorubicin inhibited tumor growth and increased CD8+/FoxP3+ ratio more efficiently than doxorubicin alone and untargeted liposomal doxorubicin, respectively. These results suggest that PD-L1Pep-1 and PD-L1Pep-2 block PD-L1 and reinvigorate T-cell activity, inhibiting tumor growth by enhancing anti-tumor immunity.

BACKGROUND: Use of appropriate antibiotics for the treatment of pneumonia is integral in patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). Although it is recommended that empirical treatment regimens should be based on the local distribution of pathogens in patients with suspected hospital-acquired pneumonia, few studies observe patients admitted to ICUs with nursing home-acquired pneumonia (NHAP). We found factors associated with the use of inappropriate antibiotics in patients with pneumonia admitted to the ICU via the emergency room (ER). METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 83 pneumonia patients with confirmed causative bacteria admitted to ICUs via ER March 2015-May 2017. We compared clinical parameters, between patients who received appropriate or inappropriate antibiotics using the Mann-Whitney U, Pearson's chi-square, and Fisher's exact tests. We investigated independent factors associated with inappropriate antibiotic use in patients using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Among 83 patients, 30 patients (36.1%) received inappropriate antibiotics. NHAP patients were more frequently treated with inappropriate antibiotics than with appropriate antibiotics (47.2% vs. 96.7%, p<0.001). Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was more frequently isolated from individuals in the inappropriate antibiotics-treated group than in the appropriate antibiotics-treated group (7.5% vs. 70.0%, p<0.001). In multivariate analysis, NHAP was independently associated with the use of inappropriate antibiotics in patients with pneumonia admitted to the ICU via ER. CONCLUSION: NHAP is a risk factor associated with the use of inappropriate antibiotics in patients with pneumonia admitted to the ICU via the ER.

BACKGROUND: Dung beetle glycosaminoglycan is known to possess anti-aging activities. However, its anti-cancer mechanisms are not fully elucidated yet. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-cancer effect of insect-derived polymer dung beetle glycosaminoglycan (GAG) after intraperitoneally injecting it to melanoma mice induced by B16F10 cells. METHODS: To determine molecular mechanism involved in the anti-cancer effect of dung beetle GAG, its origin N-glycan under 3KD Dalton was assayed for melanoma cell cytotoxicity. Quantitative comparisons of adhesive molecule on extracellular matrix and activities of tissue inhibitor of metalloprotease 2 (TIMP-2) were also investigated. In vivo anti-cancer effect of dung beetle GAG on solid tumor size, survival time and gene-expression profiles was also assayed using B10F10 melanoma mice model. Mice with induced melanoma were then treated with Catharsius molossus (dung beetle) GAG (CaG) at 5 mg/kg for 8 weeks to investigate its anti-cancer effects compared to bumblebee (Bombus ignitus) queen glycosaminoglycan (IQG) and Huechys sanguinea glycosaminoglycan (HEG). RESULTS: These N-glycans derived from these GAG were composed of many linear heparinoid polysaccharides, polymers with hexose and N-acetylhexose. Adminstration with these GAGs increased survival time and decreased melanoma sizes in mice, in accordance with their inhibitory effects on cell growth ratio of melanoma B16F10. In addition, treatment with N-glycans derived from theses glycosaminoglycan increased activities of TIMP-2 in HMVEC cells pretreated with TNF-alpha and in melanoma cells, suggesting that they had anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. In DNA microarray results, compared to control, CaG treated mouse group showed upregulation of 192 genes including collagen,typeI,alpha1 (Col1a1), consistent with the highly increased in vitro extracellular matrix (ECM) adhesion on collagen 1 and up-regulation of heparanase (Hpse). After treatment with CaG, a total of 152 genes were down-regulated, including nuclear RNA export factor (Nxf3) and hyaluronan proteoglycan link protein1 (Hapln1). CONCLUSIONS: Glycosaminoglycan, CaG can strengthen ECM by increasing activity of TIMP-2 and adhesion activity on collagen known to inhibit changes of ECM, leading to tumor cell invasion and progression.

Eupatilin (5,7-dihydroxy-3',4',6-trimethoxyflavone) is a flavonoid compound from Artemisia species that possesses beneficial biological activities such as anti-cancer, anti-oxidation, and anti-inflammatory activities. However, an anti-adipogenic effect has not yet been reported. In this study, we found that eupatilin significantly inhibited the adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Eupatilin decreased intracellular lipid accumulation and suppressed the expression level of key adipogenic regulators in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) and CCAAT-enhancer-binding protein alpha (C/EBPα), in a concentration-dependent manner. These results show that eupatilin significantly inhibits 3T3-L1 cell differentiation and suggest that it has potential as a novel anti-obesity therapy.
