RESUMO

Background and Objectives: Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is a minimally invasive technique for nephrolithiasis. RIRS is performed via a monitor screen displaying a magnified surgical site. Respiration can affect the stability of the surgical view during RIRS because the kidneys are close to the diaphragm. The purpose of this trial is to compare the effect of anesthesia type on the stability of the surgical view during RIRS between spinal anesthesia and general anesthesia. Materials and Methods: Patients were allocated to the general anesthesia group or spinal anesthesia group. During surgery, movement of the surgical field displayed on the monitor screen was graded by the first assistant on a 10-grade numeric rating scale (0-10). Next, it was also graded by the main surgeon. After surgery, we evaluated the discomfort with the anesthesia method for all patients. Results: Thirty-four patients were allocated to the general anesthesia group and 32 patients to the spinal anesthesia group. The average values of the two surgeons for surgical field oscillation grade showed vision on the monitor screen was more stable in the general anesthesia group than the spinal anesthesia group (3.3 ± 1.6 vs. 5.0 ± 1.6, p < 0.001). The degrees of the inconvenience of the surgery did not differ between the groups (0.7 ± 1.8 vs. 1.6 ± 2.6, p = 0.114), even though more patients reported inconvenience with a grade of 3 or more in the spinal anesthesia group (8.8% vs. 28.1%, p = 0.042). Conclusions: In terms of the visualization of the surgical site, general anesthesia might provide a more stable surgical view during RIRS compared to spinal anesthesia without increasing inconvenience induced by the type of anesthesia.

RESUMO

Introduction: Weight-loss strategies through meal replacements are effective and sustainable options. However, few studies have assessed their effects on weight loss including body composition through protein-supplemented meal replacements targeting the Asian population, including Koreans. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of a protein-supplemented very-low-calorie diet (PSVLCD) for weight reduction and changes in body composition in individuals with obesity over a 12-month long-term period. Methods: In total, 106 participants with obesity were randomly assigned to a PSVLCD or control group (food-based calorie-restricted diet). Body weight, waist circumference, body composition, and blood marker levels were measured throughout the study. Statistical analyses were performed to compare outcomes between the groups. Results: Among the 106 participants, 84 completed the 12-month follow-up. Intention-to-treat analysis showed that the mean weight loss from baseline to 12 months was -6.86 kg (8.21% of baseline weight) in the PSVLCD group and - 4.66 kg (5.47% of initial body weight) in the control group; the difference was -2.20 kg with a marginally significant interval (95% confidence interval [CI], -4.90; 0.50). Waist circumference (-8.35 cm vs. -4.85 cm; mean difference, -3.49 cm; 95% CI, -6.48 to -0.50) and visceral fat area (-28.28 cm2 vs. -13.26 cm2; mean difference, -15.03cm2; 95% CI, -29.01 to -1.04) also significantly decreased in the PSVLCD group at 12 months. Discussion: The PSVLCD group demonstrated a substantial initial reduction in waist circumference that was sustained over the study period, alongside a marginally significant decrease in weight. These findings suggest that a protein-supplemented very-low-calorie diet may be an effective strategy for long-term weight management and body composition improvement in individuals with obesity. RESUMO

MXenes have garnered significant attention due to their atomically thin two-dimensional structure with metallic electronic properties. However, it has not yet been fully achieved to discover semiconducting MXenes to implement them into gate-tunable electronics such as field-effect transistors and phototransistors. Here, a semiconducting Ti4N3Tx MXene synthesized by using a modified oxygen-assisted molten salt etching method under ambient conditions, is reported. The oxygen-rich synthesis environment significantly enhances the etching reaction rate and selectivity of Al from a Ti4AlN3 MAX phase, resulting in well-delaminated and highly crystalline Ti4N3Tx MXene with minimal defects and high content of F and O, which led to its improved hydrophobicity and thermal stability. Notably, the synthesized Ti4N3Tx MXene exhibited p-type semiconducting characteristics, including gate-tunable electrical conductivity, with a current on-off ratio of 5 × 103 and a hole mobility of ∼0.008 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 243 K. The semiconducting property crucial for thin-film transistor applications is evidently associated with the surface terminations and the partial substitution of oxygen in the nitrogen lattice, as corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, the synthesized Ti4N3Tx exhibits strong light absorption characteristics and photocurrent generation. These findings highlight the delaminated Ti4N3Tx as an emerging two-dimensional semiconducting material for potential electronic and optoelectronic applications.

RESUMO

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been a primary method in menopausal women and patients with ablated ovaries, but safety has been a concern. Cell-based HRT has emerged as an alternative approach without side effects causing pharmaceutical HRT via 3-dimensionally engineered constructs layering ovarian hormone-producing cells. In this study, we applied micro-sized ovarian cell-laden hydrogel beads as an approach to cell-based HRT using a minimally invasive method in the menopausal rat model. Here, we constructed GC/TC-laden microbeads (GTBs; GC, granulosa cell; TC, theca cell) that allow crosstalk between endocrine cells, encapsulating multiple beads for the figuration of the original ovary. We assessed the ovarian hormone production function of GTB through in vitro culture for 90 days. We applied it to a menopausal rat model and confirmed that GTB-injected rats restored their endocrine function, leading to the regeneration of the thinned endometrium and the maintenance of regular estrous cycles in some individuals. Additionally, it was observed to alleviate menopausal symptoms, including body weight gain and osteoporosis. Notably, the GTB-injected rats did not show mammary gland hyperplasia observed in the pharmaceutical HRT groups and exhibited fewer p53- and KI67-positive and an increase in phosphatase and tensin homolog-positive mammary gland epithelial cells compared to pharmaceutical hormone-treated rats. These results suggest that GTB-based HRT could present a lower risk of breast cancer compared to conventional pharmaceutical-HRT use. Our study highlights the potential of cell-based HRT using an injectable artificial ovary, offering a safer alternative for women requiring HRT.

RESUMO

Multifunctional, flexible, and robust thin films capable of operating in demanding harsh temperature environments are crucial for various cutting-edge applications. This study presents a multifunctional Janus film integrating highly-crystalline Ti3C2Tx MXene and mechanically-robust carbon nanotube (CNT) film through strong hydrogen bonding. The hybrid film not only exhibits high electrical conductivity (4250 S cm-1), but also demonstrates robust mechanical strength and durability in both extremely low and high temperature environments, showing exceptional resistance to thermal shock. This hybrid Janus film of 15 µm thickness reveals remarkable multifunctionality, including efficient electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of 72 dB in X band frequency range, excellent infrared (IR) shielding capability with an average emissivity of 0.09 (a minimal value of 0.02), superior thermal camouflage performance over a wide temperature range (- 1 to 300 °C) achieving a notable reduction in the radiated temperature by 243 °C against a background temperature of 300 °C, and outstanding IR detection capability characterized by a 44% increase in resistance when exposed to 250 W IR radiation. This multifunctional MXene/CNT Janus film offers a feasible solution for electromagnetic shielding and IR shielding/detection under challenging conditions.

RESUMO

Aqueous zinc-bromine batteries hold immense promise for large-scale energy storage systems due to their inherent safety and high energy density. However, achieving a reliable zinc metal electrode reaction is challenging because zinc metal in the aqueous electrolyte inevitably leads to dendrite growth and related side reactions, resulting in rapid capacity fading. Here, it is reported that combined cationic and anionic additives in the electrolytes using CeCl3 can simultaneously address the multiple chronic issues of the zinc metal electrode. Trivalent Ce3+ forms an electrostatic shielding layer to prevent Zn2+ from concentrating at zinc metal protrusions, while the high electron-donating nature of Cl- mitigates H2O decomposition on the zinc metal surface by reducing the interaction between Zn2+ and H2O. These combined cationic and anionic effects significantly enhance the reversibility of the zinc metal reaction, allowing the non-flow aqueous Zn─Br2 full-cell to reliably cycle with exceptionally high capacity (>400 mAh after 5000 cycles) even in a large-scale battery configuration of 15 × 15 cm2.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Anesthesiologists can use supraglottic airway devices as a rescue technique for failed intubation even in patients with an increased risk of gastric regurgitation. In this randomized study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of cricoid pressure and paratracheal pressure on placement of the i-gel® (Intersurgical Ltd., Wokingham, Berkshire, UK). METHODS: After induction of anesthesia in 76 adult patients, we inserted the i-gel under paratracheal or cricoid pressure, and assessed the success rate of i-gel insertion, resistance during insertion, time required for insertion, accuracy of the insertion location, tidal volumes, and peak inspiratory pressure with or without each maneuver after i-gel insertion. RESULTS: The overall success rate of insertion was significantly higher under paratracheal pressure than under cricoid pressure (36/38 [95%] vs 27/38 [71%], respectively; difference, 24%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 8 to 40; P = 0.006]. Resistance during insertion was significantly lower under paratracheal pressure than under cricoid pressure (P < 0.001). The time required for insertion was significantly shorter under paratracheal pressure than under cricoid pressure (median [interquartile range], 18 [15-23] sec vs 28 [22-38] sec, respectively; difference in medians, -10; 95% CI, -18 to -4; P < 0.001). Fibreoptic examination of the anatomical alignment of the i-gel in the larynx revealed no significant difference in the accuracy of the insertion location between the two maneuvers (P = 0.31). The differences in tidal volume and peak inspiratory pressure with or without the maneuvers were significantly lower with paratracheal pressure than with cricoid pressure (P = 0.003, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Insertion of the i-gel supraglottic airway was significantly more successful, easier, and faster while applying paratracheal pressure than cricoid pressure.

Surface plasmons in 2D materials such as graphene exhibit exceptional field confinement. However, the low electron density of majority of 2D materials, which are semiconductors or semimetals, has limited their plasmons to mid-wave or long-wave infrared regime. This study demonstrates that a 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene with high electron density can not only support strong plasmon confinement with an acoustic plasmon mode in the short-wave infrared region, but also provide ultrahigh nonlinear responses. The acoustic MXene plasmons (AMPs) in the MXene (Ti3C2Tx)-insulator (SiO2)-metal (Au) nanostructure generate in the 1.5-6.0 µm wavelength range, exhibiting a two orders of magnitude reduction in wavelength compared to wavelength in free space. Furthermore, AMP resonators with patterned Au rods exhibit a record-high nonlinear absorption coefficient of 1.37 × 10-2 m W-1 at wavelength of 1.56 µm, ≈3 orders of magnitude greater than the highest value recorded for other 2D materials. These results indicate that MXenes can overcome fundamental plasmon wavelength limitations of previously studied 2D materials, providing groundbreaking opportunities in nonlinear optical applications, including all-optical processing and ultrafast optical switching.

RESUMO

In recent years, there has been significant interest in researching ultrafast nonlinear optical phenomena involving light-matter interactions in two-dimensional (2D) materials, owing to their potential applications in optics and photonics. MXene, a recently developed 2D material, has garnered considerable attention due to its graphene-like properties and highly tunable electronic/optical characteristics. Herein, we demonstrate ultrafast all-optical switches based on four-wave-mixing (FWM) utilizing the nonlinear optical property of MXene Ti3C2Tx. In order to realize the device, we deposited multilayered Ti3C2Tx in the form of a supernatant solution onto the polished surface of a side-polished optical fiber, enabling the interaction of Ti3C2Tx with the asymmetric evanescent field of the incident input. We systematically characterized the nonlinear optical responses derived from the Ti3C2Tx layers. The fabricated device exhibits notable performance metrics, an enhancement of the extinction ratio, and a conversion efficiency of the newly generated signal, displaying 5.3 and 5.2 dB, respectively. Additionally, the device operates at high modulation frequencies, reaching up to 20 GHz, and demonstrates high-resolution detuning with channel distances of up to 15 nm. Our findings highlight the potential of MXene-based materials for ultrafast optical data management systems.

RESUMO

This observational study aimed to compare the glottic view between video and direct laryngoscopy for tracheal intubation in the surgical position for thyroid surgery with intraoperative neuromonitoring. Patients scheduled for elective thyroid surgery with intraoperative neuromonitoring were enrolled. After the induction of anesthesia, patients were positioned in the thyroid surgical posture with a standard inclined pillow under their head and back. An investigator assessed the glottic view using the percentage of glottic opening (POGO) scale and the modified Cormack-Lehane grade in direct laryngoscopy and then video laryngoscopy sequentially while using the same McGRATH™ MAC video laryngoscope at once, with or without external laryngeal manipulation, at the surgical position. A total of thirty-nine patients were participated in this study. Without external laryngeal manipulation, the POGO scale significantly improved during video laryngoscopy compared to direct laryngoscopy in the thyroid surgical position (60.0 ± 38.2% vs. 22.4 ± 23.8%; mean difference (MD) 37.6%, 95% confidence interval (CI) = [29.1, 46.0], P < 0.001). Additionally, with external laryngeal manipulation, the POGO scale showed a significant improvement during video laryngoscopy compared to direct laryngoscopy (84.6 ± 22.9% vs. 58.0 ± 36.3%; MD 26.7%, 95% CI = [18.4, 35.0] (P < 0.001). The superiority of video laryngoscopy was also observed for the modified Cormack-Lehane grade. In conclusion, video laryngoscopy with the McGRATH™ MAC video laryngoscope, when compared to direct laryngoscopy with it, improved the glottic view during tracheal intubation in the thyroid surgical position. This enhancement may potentially facilitate the proper placement of the electromyography tracheal tube and prevent tube displacement due to positional change for thyroid surgery.

RESUMO

Effective lung isolation prevents lung-to-lung aspiration during thoracotomy for the management of hemoptysis. Double-lumen endobronchial tubes (DLT) and bronchial blockers are commonly used for lung separation during thoracic surgery. In this study, the fluid-sealing characteristics of the endobronchial cuffs of three different commercially available DLTs (Broncho-Cath with a polyvinylchloride cuff, Broncho-Cath with a polyurethane cuff, and Human Broncho with a silicone cuff) and two different bronchial blockers (Arndt and Coopdech bronchial blockers) were evaluated using a benchtop model. The lateral decubitus position for the surgical management of bleeding from the right lung was simulated. The artificial tracheobronchial tree was placed horizontally, with the left bronchus in the dependent position and the right bronchus in the non-dependent position. In the DLT experiments, the tracheobronchial tree was intubated with left-sided DLTs, and the endobronchial cuff was inflated to maintain the intracuff pressure at 25 cmH2O. In the experiments with bronchial blockers, each bronchial blocker was inserted into the right bronchus, and the endobronchial cuff was inflated to seal the main bronchus. A fluid leakage test around the endobronchial cuff was performed using three different types of DLT (size 35, 37, and 41 Fr, each) and two different types of bronchial blockers (9 Fr). The 5 mL of colored water was poured into the right bronchus to simulate the blood flow from the operative side, and the times to the first and 100% leakage around the endobronchial cuff were recorded. Each bronchial blocker showed significantly less leakage over time than the other DLTs (P < 0.05). Fluid was not fully leaked around the cuffs for 24 h with either bronchial blocker. The times to first and 100% leakage were not significantly different among different types of DLTs. The times to first and 100% leakage did not also differ among the three different sizes of each type DLT. There was no significant difference in the time to first leakage around the endobronchial cuffs between Arndt and Coopdech bronchial blockers. Bronchial blockers provided a more effective seal against lung-to-lung aspiration than DLTs in the lateral decubitus position for thoracotomy in the benchtop model.

RESUMO

Paratracheal pressure has been recently suggested to compress and occlude the upper esophagus at the lower left paratracheal region to prevent gastric regurgitation alternative to cricoid pressure. It also prevents gastric insufflation. The aim of this randomized cross-over study was to investigate the effectiveness of paratracheal pressure on mask ventilation in obese anesthetized paralyzed patients. After the induction of anesthesia, two-handed mask ventilation was initiated in a volume-controlled mode with a tidal volume of 8 mL kg‒1 based on ideal body weight (IBW), a respiratory rate of 12 breaths min- 1, and positive end-expiratory pressure of 10 cmH2O. Expiratory tidal volume and peak inspiratory pressure were recorded alternately with or without the application of 30 Newtons (approximately 3.06 kg) paratracheal pressure during a total of 16 successive breaths over 80 s. Association of patient characteristics with the effectiveness of paratracheal pressure on mask ventilation, defined as the difference in expiratory tidal volume between the presence or absence of paratracheal pressure were evaluated. In 48 obese anesthetized paralyzed patients, expiratory tidal volume was significantly higher with the application of paratracheal pressure than without paratracheal pressure [496.8 (74.1) mL kg- 1 of IBW vs. 403.8 (58.4) mL kg- 1 of IBW, respectively; P < 0.001]. Peak inspiratory pressure was also significantly higher with the application of paratracheal pressure compared to that with no paratracheal pressure [21.4 (1.2) cmH2O vs. 18.9 (1.6) cmH2O, respectively; P < 0.001]. No significant association was observed between patient characteristics and the effectiveness of paratracheal pressure on mask ventilation. Hypoxemia did not occur in any of the patients during mask ventilation with or without paratracheal pressure. The application of paratracheal pressure significantly increased both the expiratory tidal volume and peak inspiratory pressure during face-mask ventilation with a volume-controlled mode in obese anesthetized paralyzed patients. Gastric insufflation was not evaluated in this study during mask ventilation with or without paratracheal pressure.

RESUMO

Background: Flow cytometric immunophenotyping of hematolymphoid neoplasms (FCI-HLN) is essential for diagnosis, classification, and minimal residual disease (MRD) monitoring. FCI-HLN is typically performed using in-house protocols, raising the need for standardization. Therefore, we surveyed the current status of FCI-HLN in Korea to obtain fundamental data for quality improvement and standardization. Methods: Eight university hospitals actively conducting FCI-HLN participated in our survey. We analyzed responses to a questionnaire that included inquiries regarding test items, reagent antibodies (RAs), fluorophores, sample amounts (SAs), reagent antibody amounts (RAAs), acquisition cell number (ACN), isotype control (IC) usage, positive/negative criteria, and reporting. Results: Most hospitals used acute HLN, chronic HLN, plasma cell neoplasm (PCN), and MRD panels. The numbers of RAs were heterogeneous, with a maximum of 32, 26, 12, 14, and 10 antibodies used for acute HLN, chronic HLN, PCN, ALL-MRD, and multiple myeloma-MRD, respectively. The number of fluorophores ranged from 4 to 10. RAs, SAs, RAAs, and ACN were diverse. Most hospitals used a positive criterion of 20%, whereas one used 10% for acute and chronic HLN panels. Five hospitals used ICs for the negative criterion. Positive/negative assignments, percentages, and general opinions were commonly reported. In MRD reporting, the limit of detection and lower limit of quantification were included. Conclusions: This is the first comprehensive study on the current status of FCI-HLN in Korea, confirming the high heterogeneity and complexity of FCI-HLN practices. Standardization of FCI-HLN is urgently needed. The findings provide a reference for establishing standard FCI-HLN guidelines.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is capable of integrating a large amount of related information to predict therapeutic relationships such as disease treatment with known drugs, gene expression, and drug-target binding. AI has gained increasing attention as a promising tool for next-generation drug development. METHODS: An AI method was used for drug repurposing and target identification for cancer. Among 8 survived candidates after background checking, N-(1-propyl-1H-1,3-benzodiazol-2-yl)-3-(pyrrolidine-1-sulfonyl) benzamide (Z29077885) was newly selected as an new anti-cancer drug, and the anti-cancer efficacy of Z29077885 was confirmed using cell viability, western blot, cell cycle, apoptosis assay in MDA-MB 231 and A549 in vitro. Then, anti-tumor efficacy of Z29077885 was validated in an in vivo A549 xenograft in BALB/c nude mice. RESULTS: First, we discovered an antiviral agent, Z29077885, as a new anticancer drug candidate using the AI deep learning method. Next, we demonstrated that Z29077885 inhibits Serine/threonine kinase 33 (STK33) enzymatic function in vitro and showed the anticancer efficacy in various cancer cells. Then, we found enhanced apoptosis via S-phase cell cycle arrest as the mechanism underlying the anticancer efficacy of Z29077885 in both lung and breast cancer cells. Finally, we confirmed the anti-tumor efficacy of Z29077885 in an in vivo A549 xenograft. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we used an AI-driven screening strategy to find a novel anticancer medication targeting STK33 that triggers cancer cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest at the s phase. It will pave a way to efficiently discover new anticancer drugs.

RESUMO

Small molecules possessing multiple proton-accessible sites are important not only to many biological systems but also to host-guest chemistry; their protonation states are causal to boosting or hindering specific host-guest interactions. However, determining the protonation site is not trivial. Herein, we conduct electrospray ionization ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry to imipramine, a known molecule with two protonation sites, based on the introduction of cucurbit[7]uril as a host molecule. For protonated imipramine, the proposed strategy allows clear distinction of the two protomers as host-guest complex ions and can be leveraged to capture the energetically less preferable protomer of the protonated imipramine.

RESUMO

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an outer retinal degenerative disease that can lead to photoreceptor cell death and profound vision loss. Although effective regulation of intraretinal inflammation can slow down the progression of the disease, an efficient anti-inflammatory treatment strategy is still lacking. This study reports the fabrication of a hyaluronic acid-based inflammation-responsive hydrogel (IRH) and its epigenetic regulation effects on retinal degeneration. The injectable IRH was designed to respond to cathepsin overexpression in an inflammatory environment. The epigenetic drug, the enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) inhibitors, was loaded into the hydrogel to attenuate inflammatory factors. On-demand anti-inflammatory effects of microglia cells via the drug-loaded IRH were verified in vitro and in vivo retinal degeneration 10 (rd10) mice model. Therefore, our IRH not only reduced intraretinal inflammation but also protected photoreceptors morphologically and functionally. Our results suggest the IRH reported here can be used to considerably delay vision loss caused by RP.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: During middle ear surgery, the patient's head is turned away from the surgical site, which may increase the intracranial pressure. Anesthetics also affect the intracranial pressure. The optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measured using ultrasonography is a reliable marker for estimating the intracranial pressure. This aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sevoflurane and propofol on the ONSD in patients undergoing middle ear surgery. METHODS: Fifty-eight adult patients were randomized into sevoflurane group (n = 29) or propofol group (n = 29). The ONSD was measured using ultrasound after anesthesia induction before head rotation (T0), and at the end of surgery (T1). The occurrence and severity of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) were assessed 1 h after the surgery. RESULTS: The ONSD was significantly increased from T0 to T1 in the sevoflurane group [4.3 (0.5) mm vs. 4.9 (0.6) mm, respectively; P < 0.001] and the propofol group [4.2 (0.3) mm vs. 4.8 (0.5) mm, respectively; P < 0.001]. No significant difference was observed in the ONSD at T0 (P = 0.267) and T1 (P = 0.384) between the two groups. The change in the ONSD from T0 to T1 was not significantly different between the sevoflurane and propofol groups [0.6 (0.4) mm vs. 0.6 (0.3) mm, respectively; P = 0.972]. The occurrence and severity of PONV was not significantly different between the sevoflurane and propofol groups (18% vs. 0%, respectively; P = 0.053). CONCLUSION: The ONSD was significantly increased during middle ear surgery. No significant difference was observed in the amount of ONSD increase between the sevoflurane and propofol groups.

RESUMO

Among lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery materials, sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) has attracted substantial attention as a cathode material owing to its potential to bypass the problematic polysulfide formation and shuttling effect. Carbonate-based electrolytes have been eschewed compared with ether-based electrolytes because of their poor compatibility with Li metal anodes. In this work, we design and study an electrolyte comprising 0.8 M of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, 0.2 M of lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate, and 0.05 M of lithium hexafluorophosphate in ethyl methyl carbonate/fluoroethylene carbonate = 3:1 v/v solution in the Li-S battery coupled with a Li metal anode and SPAN cathode. The well-designed carbonate-based electrolyte effectively stabilizes both electrodes, delivering high Coulombic efficiencies with stable cyclability. Studies using operando optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy demonstrate that dense, uniform Li deposition is promoted to suppress dendrite growth even at a high current density. Operando Raman spectroscopy reveals a reversible Li+ storage behavior in the SPAN structure through the cleavage of disulfide bonds and their redimerization during lithiation and delithiation. As a result, the proposed Li-S battery delivers an overall capacity retention of 73.5% over 1000 cycles, with high Coulombic efficiencies over 99.9%.

RESUMO

Background: Obesity is a socioeconomic problem, and visceral obesity, in particular, is related to cardiovascular diseases or metabolic syndrome. Fermented grains and various microorganisms are known to help with anti-obesity effects and weight management. Studies on the relationship between Bacillus coagulans and anti-obesity effects are not well known, and studies on the application of fermented grains and microorganisms to the human body are also insufficient. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Curezyme-LAC, an ingredient mixed with six-grain types fermented by B. coagulans, in reducing fat mass in adults with obesity. Methods: In this randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled study, 100 participants [aged 40-65 years; body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 to ≤ 33 kg/m2) were randomly allocated to two groups: 4 g/day Curezyme-LAC administered as a granulated powder or placebo (steamed grain powder mixture). Results: After 12 weeks, visceral adipose tissue decreased significantly in the Curezyme-LAC group compared with that in the placebo group (mean ± standard error, SE of -9.3 cm2 ± 5.1) vs. (6.8 cm2 ± 3.4; p = 0.008). Compared to the placebo group, the Curezyme-LAC group also showed significant reductions in total fat mass (-0.43 ± 0.24 kg vs. 0.31 ± 0.19 kg, p = 0.011), body weight (-0.4 ± 0.3 kg vs. 0.3 ± 0.2 kg, p = 0.021), BMI (-0.14 ± 0.12 vs. 0.10 ± 0.07, p = 0.028), and waist circumference (-0.6 ± 0.2 cm vs. -0.1 ± 0.2 cm, p = 0.018) without a change in dietary intake and physical activity. Conclusion: Curezyme-LAC supplementation for 12 weeks may benefit individuals with obesity by reducing visceral fat mass.
