RESUMO

South Korea has faced many social issues due to long working hours, lack of rest areas, and poor rest facility environments for cleaners, security guards, department store workers, etc. Discussions have been ongoing about mandating the installation of rest facilities. From August 18, 2022, Article 128-2 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, concerning the installation of rest facilities, was enforced. Consequently, employers in all industries are required to install rest facilities, and laws have been established to ensure these facilities meet certain standards. Accordingly, this study investigated the current status of rest facility installations and the awareness of the law's enactment in Korean industrial sites. The results, analyzed by gender, age, managerial status, industry, and size of the business, indicated that younger people were less satisfied with the rest facilities. Managers were more knowledgeable about the legal regulations than workers. In the service industry, compared to other industries, smaller businesses were less likely to have rest facilities and were less aware of the legal regulations. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data to help establish the rest facility installation laws in Korea.

RESUMO

Previous studies have investigated the health hazards caused by exposure to the noise of heavy equipment used at construction sites. Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport operates a registration system for construction machinery, and regular safety inspections are mandatory. Although workers inspecting construction machinery vehicles are exposed to unwanted noise, no noise exposure assessment has been made regarding these workers in Korea. The time-weighted average (TWA) daily average noise exposure level among construction machinery inspectors at 18 inspection centers was 75.3 dB(A). Among the inspection steps, the exhaust gas inspection step was found to exhibit the highest noise exposure level, up to 100 dB(A). In Korea, if the noise level of a workplace exceeds 85 dB(A) as a TWA, workers are required to undergo special medical examinations. This study found that special medical examinations were required for two of the 18 target inspection centers (approximately 115 workers) as the 8-hour TWA noise level exceeded 85 dB(A). Therefore, regular noise exposure assessment and special medical examinations for noise are required to prevent inspectors from developing hearing disorders due to noise exposure.

RESUMO

Feed has a great influence on the composition of swine manure, which is the principal cause of odor. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to simply change the shape of pig feed and control calories to find a suitable feed form for reducing the smell of swine manure. The experiment was conducted on 15 pigs from July to August 2021, and a total of three measurements were done. Three types of feed were evaluated in this study. The analysis items related to odor of swine manure are complex odor, ammonia, sulfur-based odors, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the case of complex odor, dilution multiples tended to decrease over time, except for type A feed. The concentration of ammonia in all types of feed decreased over time. Most sulfur-based odorous substances except hydrogen sulfide at the first measurement were not detected. Representatively, Decane, 2,6-Dimethylnonane, and 1-Methyl-3-propylcycolhexane were detected in VOCs generated from swine manure. The major odorous substansces in swine manure have changed from ammonia and sulfur compounds to VOCs. In order to reduce the odor caused by swine manure, it is ad-vantageous to use low-calorie feed consisting of pellet-type.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a participatory approach to the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular (CCV) health of older farmers in rural Korea. METHODS: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants included 58 farmers aged ≥ 60 years who were assigned to either an experimental group (n = 28) or a comparative group (n = 30). The experimental group took part in the participatory program for CCV health, while the comparative group received a conventional lecture program for CCV health. The two groups, from pretest to posttest, were compared using the generalized estimating equation (GEE) method. RESULTS: The participatory program showed a greater effect over time than the conventional lecture program for health empowerment (Χ2 = 7.92, p = 0.005) and self-efficacy in managing CCV health (Χ2 = 5.94, p = 0.015). The average rate of implemented improvements after 3 months was 88.9%, showing that the participatory program was successful. CONCLUSIONS: The participatory program for CCV health was an effective intervention for the empowerment and self-efficacy of older farmers in managing their own CCV health. Therefore, we recommend replacing lectures with participatory methods in CCV health programs for older farmers.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to check whether benzene is contained inside the petroleum-based cleaning agent used in the printing industry and measure whether it is actually exposed to the air. Benzene was analyzed inside the cleaning agent and air exposure evaluation was done by area sampling. Risk assessment was performed using the Chemical Hazard Risk Management (CHARM) technique. Most products contained benzene based on the results obtained from this study. As a result of collecting air samples and checking whether the workers were exposed to benzene actually, benzene was detected in three samples. As a result of the risk assessment, most of printing businesses scored more than four points. Benzene was detected in all petroleum-based cleaning products. In addition, benzene was detected in some of air samples. Considering the fact that even small exposure level of benzene is dangerous to worker health and most of the printing businesses in South Korea operate on a small scale with fewer than five employees so the health management system is poor, it is necessary to prepare appropriate measures to prevent work diseases provoked by benzene exposure.

RESUMO

Objective: The exposure levels of disease-causing bacteria and germs were assessed on aircraft cleaning workers on multiple different aircrafts. Method: Five measuring points were selected depending on the aircraft types. Four aircraft cleaning agencies were selected for the test. Aircraft cleaning work was classified as intensive cleaning and general cleaning work. Ventilation in aircraft when sampling during the cleaning operation was categorized into forced ventilation and natural ventilation. The collection of airborne microorganisms was made through inertial impactors which were installed 1.5 meters above the bottom of the aircraft. The airborne bacteria and fungus growth badges were selected by Trytpic Soy Agar and Sabouraud Dextrose Agar. Results: The average concentrations of bacteria in the air were higher in the order of small, medium, and large airplanes. Rainy days had higher concentrations inside and outside the aircraft as compared to those in sunny days. Regarding ventilation, concentrations in natural ventilation were higher than concentrations in forced ventilation. According to the type of work, the concentrations in the intensive cleaning groups (cleaning one plane a day) were lower than those of the ordinary cleaning groups (cleaning several planes per day). Conclusion: The concentration levels of airborne bacteria and fungi in the aircraft surveyed were lower than the indoor environmental standards of Korea (800 cfu/m3 and 500 cfu/m3). The average concentrations of bacteria in the air and fungi in the air were highest in small aircraft owned by Company D.

RESUMO

Meteorological disasters caused by climate change like heat, cold waves, and unusually long rainy seasons affect the milk productivity of cows. Studies have been conducted on how milk productivity and milk compositions change due to heat stress (HS). However, the estimation of losses in milk production due to HS and hereby environmental impacts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are yet to be evaluated in Korean dairy farms. Dairy milk production and milk compositions data from March to October 2018, provided by the Korea Dairy Committee (KDC), were used to compare regional milk production with the temperature-humidity index (THI). Raw data for the daily temperature and relative humidity in 2018 were obtained from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). This data was used to calculate the THI and the difference between the maximum and minimum temperature changing rate, as the average daily temperature range, to show the extent to which the temperature gap can affect milk productivity. The amount of milk was calculated based on the price of 926 won/kg from KDC. The results showed that the average milk production rate was the highest within the THI range 60-73 in three regions in May: Chulwon (northern region), Hwasung (central region), and Gunwi (southern region). The average milk production decreased by 4.96 ± 1.48% in northern region, 7.12 ± 2.36% in central region, and 7.94 ± 2.57% in southern region from June to August, which had a THI range of 73 or more, when compared to May. Based on the results, the level of THI should be maintained like May. If so, the farmers can earn a profit of 9,128,730 won/farm in northern region, 9,967,880 won/farm in central region, and 12,245,300 won/farm in southern region. Additionally, the average number of cows raised can be reduced by 2.41 ± 0.35 heads/farm, thereby reducing GHG emissions by 29.61 ± 4.36 kg CO2eq/day on average. Overall, the conclusion suggests that maintaining environmental conditions in the summer that are similar to those in May is necessary. This knowledge can be used for basic research to persuade farmers to change farm facilities to increase the economic benefits and improve animal welfare.

RESUMO

In a widespread social turmoil such as the Pandemic, job groups with high turnover rates and high job stress, such as the construction industry, will have a greater adverse impact than the general job group. This is to be used as basic data in preparing management plans by identifying the factors that hinder job stress and job satisfaction of construction workers. In this study, during the Pandemic period (1 September 2021 to 31 December 2021), a survey was conducted on job stress and job satisfaction among safety and health managers working at construction sites. The overall job satisfaction of workers in the construction industry was grasped by analyzing the level of correlation and the mutual influence on job stress, job satisfaction, general characteristics, and work-related characteristics. As a result, in terms of work characteristics, it was found that the smaller the working period in the current position, the more positive the job satisfaction was (p < 0.01). In addition, it was found that job satisfaction increased significantly when there was a promotion opportunity (p < 0.001). The construction industry is a job group with high basic job stress and low job satisfaction. In addition, it was evaluated that job stress increased during the pandemic.

RESUMO

The VOCs and metabolites in urine for exposed VOCs were evaluated for firefighters who participated in the actual fire fighting to determine whether firefighters were exposed to hazardous chemicals, which is the basic data on cancer risk of firefighters. When the fire extinguishing time is long, the concentration of benzene, PHEMA, and toluene among VOCs and metabolites in the case of fire suppression, rescue, and fire investigation work, which is estimated that the exposure of hazardous substances generated from the fire site at the time of fire suppression was large, significantly increased. In the case where the number of urination is 2 or less, the concentration of TZCA, toluene, and benzene among VOCs and metabolites was significantly increased compared to the number of urinating more than 2 times. In the concentration of VOCs and metabolites in urine corrected with creatinine, the concentrations of toluene and PHEMA in urine were significantly higher. The concentration of PHEMA in urine was higher in the group who participated in the fire suppression for more than 11 hours (long time) than the group who participated in the fire suppression for a short time.

RESUMO

This study investigated the correlation between the concentration of air pollutants in two metropolitan cities, Seoul and Incheon, located in South Korea with different urban characteristics and the number of patients with circulatory diseases among residents exposed to air pollution. The residential area was selected as Eunpyeong-gu of Seoul Metropolitan City and the industrial area as Jung-gu of Incheon Metropolitan City. The evaluation period is between 2015 and 2016. The relevant data provide by the Korea governmental agency were analysed to derive the purpose of this study. It was confirmed that PM10, PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide among air pollutants had an increasing impact on the incidence rate of circulatory diseases. The PM2.5 was positively correlated with the incidence rate of all circulatory diseases in residential area (p < 0.05). The carbon monoxide showed a positive correlation with circulatory system diseases except for hypertension in residential area. (p < 0.05). The sulfur dioxide was positively correlated with all circulatory diseases in both residential and industrial area (p < 0.05). Based on the results obtained from this study, it was found that there are different types of air pollutants that affect circulatory diseases in residential and industrial areas.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to investigate effect of air cleaner operated during pig breeding period on stress hormones of pigs and their pork quality. The stress hormones (cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine) in blood sample of pigs reared in the housing rooms with or without air cleaner have been measured according to a pig's rearing stage: 0 day (farrowing), 21st day (farrowing-weaning), 70th day (weaning-nursery), 140th day (nursery-growing), and 180th day (growing-fattening). The comparison of pork quality according to the application of an air cleaner was performed through the carcass analysis of the pigs shipped from swine house. The levels of cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine in pigs reared in housing rooms with and without air cleaners were found to be within the range of normal reference values. Among pork quality evaluation items, the thickness of intermuscular fat and final carcass grade of pigs raised in housing room with air cleaner was generally superior to those of pigs raised in housing room without air cleaner (p < 0.05). Based on the results obtained from this study, it is concluded that air cleaner does not have a significant effect on reducing pig stress but contributes to improving pork quality in pig breeding.

RESUMO

Diagnostic procedures are mostly used to detect a particular disease, and each procedure indicates the presence or absence of the disease in an individual. Sensitivity and positive predictive value, which are measures of the effectiveness of a diagnostic procedure, are simply calculated as the proportion of the individuals diagnosed with the disease by the test among the patients with the disease, and of the diseased persons among the individuals in whom the disease was detected by the test, respectively. For a diagnosis with such a binary result, sensitivity and the positive predictive value of diagnostic procedures can be compared using the chi-square statistic. However, in the treatment of cancer patients, it is important not only to diagnose the disease status of an individual patient but also to detect the correct location of the cancer. The tumor location may be incorrectly identified in some subjects diagnosed with cancer. It is therefore of interest whether a procedure that diagnoses cancer also correctly indicates the tumor location. In this paper, we re-define the sensitivity and the positive predictive value of tumor detection as the ratio of the number of cases with a correct diagnosis of the tumor location by the test to the number of cases of cancer, and as the ratio of patients with a correct diagnosis of the tumor location to the number of individuals diagnosed with cancer by the test, respectively. We refer to these parameters as 'semi-sensitivity' and 'semi-positive predictive value'. To compare these ratios between diagnostic procedures, test statistics are developed from binary diagnostic results. Simulation studies conducted to evaluate the nominal level and power are presented, and two sets of example data are also analyzed using the new test statistic.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The survival benefit of extensive colectomy is controversial in Lynch syndrome, and risk factors for metachronous colorectal cancer (CRC) after segmental colectomy are unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the survival outcome and risk of metachronous CRC after surgery in Lynch syndrome patients diagnosed with their first CRC. METHODS: Overall, 106 patients with Lynch syndrome who underwent surgery for CRC were included in the study. The demographics, genotype, clinicopathological characteristics of the index CRC, and follow-up data were reviewed from a single-institution Lynch syndrome database. RESULTS: Of 30 patients who underwent extensive surgery, no metachronous CRC was developed during a mean follow-up of 68.1 months. Of 76 patients who underwent segmental colectomy, 13 (17.1 %) developed metachronous CRC during a mean follow-up of 77.2 months. The cumulative risk of metachronous CRC was 8.4 % at 5 years and 20.4 % at 10 years after segmental colectomy. No difference in overall and CRC-specific survival was observed between segmental colectomy and extensive colectomy (p = 0.277 and p = 0.659, respectively). A 25 cm or longer resection of bowel decreased the risk of metachronous CRC after segmental colectomy compared with less extensive resection (hazard ratio 0.10, 95 % confidence interval 0.01-0.86). Annual surveillance colonoscopy did not decrease the risk of metachronous CRC compared with less frequent surveillance colonoscopy. Although not statistically significant, none of the MSH6 gene mutation carriers were diagnosed with metachronous CRC. CONCLUSIONS: Although no survival benefit was identified, surgeons and patients might consider extensive colectomy to prevent metachronous CRC in Lynch syndrome patients regardless of their clinicopathological characteristics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is not rare for a small-bore feeding tube to be inserted incorrectly into the respiratory system in critically ill patients. Thus, monitoring is necessary to prevent respiratory malplacement of the tube. We investigated the utility of capnographic monitoring to prevent respiratory complications due to feeding tube mispositioning in critically ill patients. METHODS: This study was a pre and post-interventional study, including 445 feeding tube placements events studied retrospectively in the medical and surgical intensive care units of the Samsung Medical Center. We compared outcomes between time periods before and after capnographic monitoring and documented any respiratory complications. RESULTS: Feeding tubes were inserted in 275 cases without capnographic monitoring. Capnographic monitoring was performed in 170 cases. Sixteen patients (4%) had respiratory complications of all tube placements. Feeding tube was inserted into the trachea in 11 (2%) patients and for a pneumothorax in five (1%) patients. Fourteen cases of respiratory complications were detected in the control group (14/275, 5%, 10 tracheal insertions and four pneumothoraxes). Two respiratory complications were detected in the capnographic monitoring group (2/170, 1%, one tracheal insertion and one pneumothorax). Respiratory complications were detected less frequently in the capnographic monitoring group than that in the control group (P = 0.035). CONCLUSIONS: Capnographic monitoring is simple, easy to learn, and may be useful to prevent respiratory complications when placing a feeding tube in a critically ill patient.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Therefore, in order to improve survival rates, the development of biomarkers for early diagnosis is crucial. Recently, diabetes has been associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. The aims of this study were to search for novel serum biomarkers that could be used for early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and to identify whether diabetes was a risk factor for this disease. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 25 patients with diabetes (control) and 93 patients with pancreatic cancer (including 53 patients with diabetes), and analyzed using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS). We performed preprocessing, and various classification methods with imputation were used to replace the missing values. To validate the selection of biomarkers identified in pancreatic cancer patients, we measured biomarker intensity in pancreatic cancer patients with diabetes following surgical resection and compared our results with those from control (diabetes-only) patients. RESULTS: By using various classification methods, we identified the commonly splitting protein peaks as m/z 1,465, 1,206, and 1,020. In the follow-up study, in which we assessed biomarkers in pancreatic cancer patients with diabetes after surgical resection, we found that the intensities of m/z at 1,465, 1,206, and 1,020 became comparable with those of diabetes-only patients.

RESUMO

The objective of the study is to investigate the distribution patterns of airborne bacteria and fungi in three feedstuff-manufacturing factories in Korea. The geometric mean (+/-GSD) levels of airborne bacteria and fungi in the feedstuff-manufacturing factory were 113(+/-18)cfu/m(3) and 89(+/-5)cfu/m(3) for pelleting process and 198(+/-5)cfu/m(3) and 124(+/-12)cfu/m(3) for powdering process, respectively. The percentage of respirable (0.65-4.7 microm) and total (>4.7 microm) concentration of airborne bacteria and fungi in the feedstuff-manufacturing factory ranged from 60% to 90% and were higher in pelleting process than powdering process. The ratio of indoor concentration and concentration in ventilation air from outside for airborne bacteria and fungi exceeded 1.0 regardless of types of feedstuff manufacture process. The predominant airborne microorganisms in the feedstuff-manufacturing factory were Staphylococcus spp., Micrococcus spp., Corynebacterium spp. and Bacillus spp. for airborne bacteria and Cladosporium spp., Penicillium spp. and Aspergillus spp. for airborne fungi, respectively. Based on the result of the study, there would be an association between relative humidity among environmental factors and airborne microorganism's bioactivity.

RESUMO

The objective of this on-site experiment was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of currently utilized various additives, i.e. tap water, salt water, digested manure, microbial additive, soybean oil, artificial spice and essential oil, to reduce odor emissions from the confinement pig building. Odor reduction rates were evaluated with respect to sensual odor (odor concentration index, odor intensity and odor offensiveness) and odorous compounds (ammonia and sulfuric odorous compounds). Of the additives investigated in this study, salt water, artificial spice and essential oil had a positive effect on reducing odor generation. The effectiveness of salt water was only observed on ammonia, showing the reduction rates as a function of time (t=immediately, 1h, 3h, 5h, and 24h after spraying) were 0.1%, 20%, 36%, 11% and 0.2% as compared to initial level before spraying. The odor intensity and offensiveness were lessened by spraying artificial spice and essential oil of which maximum reduction rates ranged from 60% to 80%. Additionally, the essential oil had a significant effect on reducing sulfuric odorous compounds for 24h after spraying, which implicates that it functioned as not only a masking agent but also as an antimicrobial agent.

RESUMO

The objective of the study is to demonstrate an effect of manual feeding on the level of farmer's exposure to airborne contaminants in the confinement nursery pig house. The levels of all the airborne contaminants besides respirable dust, total airborne fungi and ammonia were significantly higher in the treated nursery pig house with feeding than the control nursery pig house without feeding. Although there is no significant difference in respirable dust and total airborne fungi between the treatment and the control, their concentrations in the treated nursery pig house were also higher than the control nursery pig house. The result that the level of ammonia in the treated nursery pig house is lower than the control nursery pig house would be reasoned by the mechanism of ammonia generation in the pig house and adsorption property of ammonia to dust particles. In conclusion, manual feeding by farmer increased the exposure level of airborne contaminants compared to no feeding activity.

RESUMO

A yellow-pigmented, Gram-negative, aerobic bacterial strain comprising rod-shaped cells devoid of flagellar and gliding motility, designated strain JC2129(T), was isolated from tidal flat sediment of Dongmak on Ganghwa Island, South Korea. Results from a 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the isolate belonged to the family Flavobacteriaceae; the highest level of nucleotide sequence similarity (91.9%) occurred with Polaribacter dokdonensis DSW-5(T). The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C(15:0) (19.8%), iso-C(15:1) G (14.0%), iso-C(17:0) 3-OH (13.7%) and iso-C(13:0) (6.4%). Flexirubin-type pigments were absent. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-6. The DNA G+C content was 43-45 mol%. Data from a polyphasic taxonomy study suggested that the isolate represents a novel genus and species in the family Flavobacteriaceae, for which the name Actibacter sediminis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Actibacter sediminis is JC2129(T) (=KCTC 12704(T) =JCM 14002(T)).

RESUMO

While several methods are available for bioaerosol monitoring, impaction remains the most common one, particularly for collecting fungal spores. Earlier studies have shown that the collection efficiency of many conventional single-stage bioaerosol impactors falls below 50% for spores with an aerodynamic diameter between 1.7 and 2.5 microm because their cut-off size is 2.5 microm or greater. The cut-off size reduction is primarily done by substantially increasing the sampling flow rate or decreasing the impaction jet size, W, to a fraction of a millimetre, with both measures often impractical to implement. Some success has recently been reported on the utilization of an ultra-low jet-to-plate distance, S (S/W < 0.1), in circular impactors. This paper describes a laboratory evaluation and some field testing of two single-stage, single-nozzle, slit bioaerosol impactors, Allergenco-D and Air-O-Cell, which feature the same jet dimensions and flow rate but have some design configuration differences that were initially thought to be of low significance. The collection efficiency and the spore deposit characteristics were determined in the laboratory using real-time aerosol spectrometry and different microscopic enumeration methods as the test impactors were challenged with the non-biological polydisperse NaCl aerosol and the aerosolized fungal spores of Cladosporium cladosporioides, Aspergillus versicolor, and Penicillium melinii. The tests showed that a relatively small reduction in the jet-to-plate distance of a single-stage, single-nozzle impactor with a tapered inlet nozzle, combined with adding a straight section of sufficient length, can significantly decrease the cut-off size to the level that is sufficient to efficiently collect spores of all fungal species. Furthermore, it appears that the slit jet design may improve the application of partial spore counting methodologies with respect to those applied to circular deposits. Data from a demonstration field study, conducted with the two samplers in environments containing a variety of fungal species, supported the laboratory findings.
