Organic matter is crucial in aerosol-climate interactions, yet the physicochemical properties and origins of organic aerosols remain poorly understood. Here we show the seasonal characteristics of submicron organic aerosols in Arctic Svalbard during spring and summer, emphasizing their connection to transport patterns and particle size distribution. Microbial-derived organic matter (MOM) and terrestrial-derived organic matter (TOM) accounted for over 90% of the total organic mass in Arctic aerosols during these seasons, comprising carbohydrate/protein-like and lignin/tannin-like compounds, respectively. In spring, aerosols showed high TOM and low MOM intensities due to biomass-burning influx in the central Arctic. In contrast, summer exhibited elevated MOM intensity, attributed to the shift in predominant atmospheric transport from the central Arctic to the biologically active Greenland Sea. MOM and TOM were associated with Aitken mode particles (<100 nm diameter) and accumulation mode particles (>100 nm diameter), respectively. This association is linked to the molecular size of biomolecules, impacting the number concentrations of corresponding aerosol classes. These findings highlight the importance of considering seasonal atmospheric transport patterns and organic source-dependent particle size distributions in assessing aerosol properties in the changing Arctic.

BACKGROUND: Contact immunotherapy using diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP) is a recommended treatment for severe alopecia areata (AA); however, few clinical factors are known, and few standardized application methods affecting therapeutic efficacy have been devised. OBJECTIVE: To confirm the therapeutic response of DPCP immunotherapy in AA, first we analyze the factors influencing its outcome and patient satisfaction levels, after which we standardize the DPCP treatment method for better outcomes. METHODS: We utilized a nationwide questionnaire-based survey to assess patient satisfaction and undertook a medical record review involving 412 patients currently undergoing treatment for DPCP. RESULTS: The patients' mean age was 36.4 years, and 27% of the cases were diagnosed as AA in childhood. Treatment response was higher when DPCP was used to treat the entire scalp, including subclinical lesions, and longer treatment durations and longer intervals between treatments were associated with a better treatment response. Atopy (atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma), thyroid disorder, and extent of hair loss were all negatively correlated with the treatment response. However, there was no correlation between the treatment response and factors such as the age of onset, a family history of AA, nail changes, or AA duration, which are commonly known to be associated with a poor prognosis. CONCLUSION: DPCP immunotherapy is an effective treatment for AA, and the study demonstrated the factors affecting DPCP treatment response and patients' satisfaction and may contribute to standardizing the DPCP treatment method for better outcomes.

BACKGROUND: A set of criteria for severity classification is essential in alopecia areata (AA). Currently, no guidelines are universally accepted for defining AA severity. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish a set of consensus criteria for classifying the severity of and identifying treatment refractoriness in AA. METHODS: A preliminary draft of the definition for moderate-to-severe AA was crafted based on available evidence, and members of the Korean Hair Research Society (KHRS) subsequently endorsed the recommendation through an online survey. RESULTS: In the first Delphi round, consensus was attained on 15 questions. After refining certain items in the second round, consensus was achieved on 23 out of 26 questions. The KHRS first defined AA severity using the severity of alopecia tool (SALT). SALT ≥50 was defined as severe, 20≤ SALT <50 as moderate, and SALT <20 as mild. Moderate AA was considered severe if it meets one or more of the following criteria: dermatology life quality index >10, presence of accompanying eyebrow or eyelash loss, positive hair loss activity, or treatment-refractory AA. CONCLUSION: These consensus criteria can help clinicians accurately diagnose AA, provide appropriate treatment, and monitor its progression.

The bioinspired camera, comprising a single lens and a curved image sensor-a photodiode array on a curved surface-, was born of flexible electronics. Its economical build lends itself well to space-constrained machine vision applications. The curved sensor, much akin to the retina, helps image focusing, but the curvature also creates a problem of image distortion, which can undermine machine vision tasks such as object recognition. Here we report an anti-distortion single-lens camera, where 4096 silicon photodiodes arrayed on a curved surface in a nonuniform pattern assimilated to the distorting optics are the key to anti-distortion engineering. That is, the photo-pixel distribution pattern itself is warped in the same manner as images are warped, which correctively reverses distortion. Acquired images feature no appreciable distortion across a 120° horizontal view, as confirmed by their neural-network recognition accuracies. This distortion correction via photo-pixel array reconfiguration is a form of in-sensor computing.

Tungsten oxide (WO3) is known for its photochromic properties, making it useful for smart windows, displays, and sensors. However, its small bandgap leads to rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs, resulting in poor photochromic performance. This study aims to enhance the photochromic properties of WO3 by synthesizing hexagonal tungsten oxide via hydrothermal synthesis, which increases surface area and internal hydrates. Titanium oxide (TiO2) was adsorbed onto the tungsten oxide to inject additional charges and reduce electron-hole recombination. Additionally, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used to improve dispersion in organic solvents, allowing for the fabrication of high-quality films using the doctor blade method. Characterization confirmed the enhanced surface area, crystal structure, and dispersion stability. Reflectance and transmittance measurements demonstrated significant improvements in photochromic properties due to the composite structure. These findings suggest that the introduction of TiO2 and PVP to tungsten oxide effectively enhances its photochromic performance, broadening its applicability in various advanced photochromic applications.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of skin wounds with diverse pathological characteristics presents significant challenges due to the limited specific and efficacy of current wound healing approaches. Microneedle (MN) patches incorporating bioactive and stimulus materials have emerged as a promising strategy to overcome these limitations and integrating bioactive materials with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties for advanced wound dressing. METHODS: We isolated diphlorethohydroxycarmalol (DPHC) from Ishige okamurae and assessed its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects on macrophages and its antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes. Subsequently, we fabricated polylactic acid (PLA) MN patches containing DPHC at various concentrations (0-0.3%) (PDPHC MN patches) and evaluated their mechanical properties and biological effects using in vitro and in vivo models. RESUTLS: Our findings demonstrated that DPHC effectively inhibited nitric oxide production in macrophages and exhibited rapid bactericidal activity against C. acnes. The PDPHC MN patches displayed potent antibacterial effects without cytotoxicity. Moreover, in 2,4-Dinitrochlorobenzene-stimulated mouse model, the PDPHC MN patches significantly suppressed inflammatory response and cutaneous lichenification. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the PDPHC MN patches holds promise as a multifunctional wound dressing for skin tissue engineering, offering antibacterial properties and anti-inflammatory properties to promote wound healing process.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing demand for surgical procedures in dermatology, resident education in surgical dermatology has become important for delivering high-quality treatment. However, it remains unclear if a sufficient number of residency programs with quality standards exist, as there has been little research on this subject in South Korea. OBJECTIVE: To identify the status of surgical dermatology education among residents and assess dermatologists' perceptions of the subject. METHODS: A 35-question survey was developed and distributed to all resident training hospitals and local clinics listed by the Korean Society of Dermatologic Surgery. Only third- and fourth-year residents were included and board-certified specialists from training hospitals and local clinics responded to the surveys. RESULTS: Survey participants included 88 residents and 120 specialists of whom one-quarter of the residents attended regular monthly educational sessions. Most residents (93%) participated in cosmetic procedures, and many performed laser therapy. However, the opportunity for toxin or filler injection was rare, with only 12% of the residents having experience with filler injections. In response, 49% of residents and 32% of specialists said that more cosmetic training was required, whereas 28% of residents and 50% of specialists said that more training for both cosmetic and conventional surgeries was necessary. CONCLUSION: The survey demonstrated a need for more training programs in surgical dermatology during residency and a perception gap between residents and specialists. Therefore, developing educational residency programs that focus on basic dermatologic surgery principles and their applications in cosmetic procedures is essential.

Acne is a common skin inflammatory condition that can significantly affect the patient's quality of life. Therefore, accurate assessment scales are very important for treatment and management of acne vulgaris. This review article issues a comprehensive review of various acne severity assessment scales. In this text, the authors review the acne grading scales, such as the Pillsbury scale, Cook's acne grading scale, Leeds acne grading system, Global Acne Grading System, and investigator's global assessment, etc. And we delve into the characteristics, advantages, limitations, and applicability of these scales. The acne grading scale to be developed in the future should be objective, accurate, comprehensive, easy to use, and applicable in a variety of clinics and research settings. Current technologies, such as artificial intelligence, could potentially contribute to the development of ideal acne grading scales that meet unmet needs.

We explored the genomic events underlying central neurocytoma (CN), a rare neoplasm of the central nervous system, via multiomics approaches, including whole-exome sequencing, bulk and single-nuclei RNA sequencing, and methylation sequencing. We identified FGFR3 hypomethylation leading to FGFR3 overexpression as a major event in the ontogeny of CN that affects crucial downstream events, such as aberrant PI3K-AKT activity and neuronal development pathways. Furthermore, we found similarities between CN and radial glial cells based on analyses of gene markers and CN tumor cells and postulate that CN tumorigenesis is due to dysregulation of radial glial cell differentiation into neurons. Our data demonstrate the potential role of FGFR3 as one of the leading drivers of tumorigenesis in CN.

Soil organic matter (SOM) plays a pivotal role in enhancing physical and biological characteristics of soil. Humic substances constitute a substantial proportion of SOM and their increase can improve crop yields and promote agricultural sustainability. While previous research has primarily assessed the influence that humic acids (HAs) derived from natural water have on soil structure, our study focuses on the impact of HAs on soil aggregation under different fertilizer regimes. During the summer cropping season, maize was cultivated under organic and synthetic fertilizer treatments. The organic fertilizer treatment utilized barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa R.) as an organic amendment five days prior to maize planting. The synthetic treatment included a synthetic fertilizer (NPK) applied at South Korea's recommended rates. The organic treatment resulted in significant improvements in the soil aggregates and stability (mean weight diameter, MWD; p < 0.05) compared to the synthetic fertilizer application. These improvements could be primarily attributed to the increased quantity and quality of HAs in the soil derived from the organic amendment. The amount of extracted HAs in the organic treatment was nearly twice that of the synthetic treatment. Additionally, the organic treatment had a 140 % larger MWD and a 40 % increase in total phenolic content compared to the synthetic treatment. The organic treatment also had an increased macronutrient uptake (p < 0.001), an 11 % increase in aboveground maize biomass, and a 21 % increase in grain yield relative to the synthetic treatment. Thus, the enhancement of HA properties through the incorporation of fresh organic manure can both directly and indirectly increase crop productivity.

Oral tactile sensitivity underpins food texture perception, but few studies have investigated mechanoreception in oral tissues. During food consumption, oral tissues are exposed to a wide range of temperatures and chemical entities. The objective of the present study was to assess the influence of thermal sensations on lingual roughness sensitivity. Just-noticeable difference thresholds (JNDs) were determined using the staircase method for surface roughness from stainless steel coupons (Ra; 0.177-0.465 µm). Thresholds were assessed when cooling or heating the metal stimuli (n = 32 subjects). Compared to the JND threshold obtained at an ambient stimulus temperature (21 °C: 0.055 ±â€…0.010 µm), a cold (8 °C) temperature significantly (P = 0.019) reduced tongue sensitivity (i.e. increased JND) to surface roughness (0.109 ±â€…0.016 µm, respectively) whereas warm and hot temperatures had no significant effect (35 °C: 0.084 ±â€…0.012 µm; 45 °C: 0.081 ±â€…0.011 µm). To assess whether the effect of cooling on roughness thresholds is TRPM8-dependent, we collected roughness thresholds in a second cohort of subjects (n = 27) following the lingual application of the cooling compound Evercool 190 (24.3 µM). Interestingly, when Evercool 190 was used to elicit the cold sensation, lingual roughness JNDs were unaffected compared to the control application of water (EC: 0.112 ±â€…0.016 µm; water: 0.102 ±â€…0.017 µm; P = 0.604). That lingual roughness sensitivity is decreased by cold temperature, but not chemicals evoking cold sensations, suggests the mechanism underpinning thermal modulation is not TRPM8 dependent.

In this multi-center, assessor-blinded pilot study, the diagnostic efficacy of cCeLL-Ex vivo, a second-generation confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE), was compared against the gold standard frozen section analysis for intraoperative brain tumor diagnosis. The study was conducted across three tertiary medical institutions in the Republic of Korea. Biopsy samples from newly diagnosed brain tumor patients were categorized based on location and divided for permanent section analysis, frozen section analysis, and cCeLL-Ex vivo imaging. Of the 74 samples from 55 patients, the majority were from the tumor core (74.3%). cCeLL-Ex vivo exhibited a relatively higher diagnostic accuracy (89.2%) than frozen section analysis (86.5%), with both methods showing a sensitivity of 92.2%. cCeLL-Ex vivo also demonstrated higher specificity (70% vs. 50%), positive predictive value (PPV) (95.2% vs. 92.2%), and negative predictive value (NPV) (58.3% vs. 50%). Furthermore, the time from sample preparation to diagnosis was notably shorter with cCeLL-Ex vivo (13 min 17 s) compared to frozen section analysis (28 min 28 s) (p-value < 0.005). These findings underscore cCeLL-Ex vivo's potential as a supplementary tool for intraoperative brain tumor diagnosis, with future studies anticipated to further validate its clinical utility.

Primary cutaneous malignancies are among the most commonly diagnosed types of cancer worldwide. We aimed to examine the incidence and 5-year survival rates of all types of primary cutaneous malignancies in the Korean population. Data from the Korean Nationwide Cancer Registry from 1999 to 2019 were analyzed. The crude incidence rates, age-standardized incidence rates, and 5-year relative survival rates of each type of skin cancer were calculated. A total of 89 965 patients were diagnosed with primary cutaneous malignancies, which was a 7-fold increase from 1999 to 2019. The age-standardized incidence rates increased 3.4-fold in basal cell carcinoma (3.7/100 000 person-years), 2.0-fold in squamous cell carcinoma (1.6/100 000 person-years), 12.0-fold in Bowen disease (1.2/100 000 person-years), and 1.8-fold in malignant melanoma (0.7/10 000 person-years) in 2019. Average annual percentage changes in age-standardized incidence rates were statistically significant in basal cell carcinoma (15.8%), Bowen disease (5.8%), squamous cell carcinoma (5.1%), malignant melanoma (1.2%), melanoma in situ (1.1%), dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (1.2%), mycosis fungoides (0.5%), primary cutaneous CD30+ T-cell proliferations (0.5%), adnexal and skin appendage carcinoma (0.4%), extramammary Paget's disease (0.2%), and Merkel cell carcinoma (0.2%). The 5-year relative survival rates were the highest in basal cell carcinoma (103.3%), followed by dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (99.7%) and mycosis fungoides (96.6%), and lowest in angiosarcoma (24.7%). The 5-year relative survival rates steadily increased in extramammary Paget's disease (23.6%), cutaneous B-cell lymphoma (21.3%), mycosis fungoides (20.2%), extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (18.1%), and malignant melanoma (16.1%) from 1996-2000 to 2015-2019. Most primary cutaneous malignancies have increased in incidence and survival rates in the Korean population, but to varying extents depending on the type of skin cancer.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 pandemic has led to psychological concerns, the distribution of which across populations may differ depending on whether pandemic-related damage is direct or indirect. This study aims to investigate concerns associated with direct and indirect damage according to population characteristics, and identify relatively vulnerable groups that are particularly affected by concerns. METHOD: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2020 Korea Community Health Survey, which collected data based on a complex sampling design. A total of 208,106 responses from individuals aged ≥ 19 were collected via in-person interviews. The items related to COVID-19 concerns were measured by Likert scales ranging from 1 to 5 and categorized into two types: direct concerns, which pertained to infection or death, and indirect concerns, which pertained to criticism, vulnerability, and economic damage, through factor analysis. We compared the means and effect size of direct concerns, indirect concerns, and overall concerns using weighted mean, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a two-factor structure for psychological concerns about COVID-19 (CFI = 0.99, TLI = 0.97, SRMR = 0.02, RMSEA = 0.06), which were divided into direct and indirect concerns. Mean scores were 3.62 for direct concerns and 4.07 for indirect concerns. Direct concerns were higher in females (B = .26); the elderly (B = .15); those diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes (B = .04; B = .06); those with few assistants during quarantine (B = .15); and those whose neighbors responded inappropriately to COVID-19 (B = .07). Indirect concerns were lower among the elderly (B = -.04), and higher among young; married (B = .25); pink- or blue-collar workers (B = .08; B = .06); and those who felt that the city responded inappropriately to COVID-19 (B = .02). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of concerns regarding direct and indirect damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic differed according to population characteristics. Some factors had a marked influence on direct and indirect concerns. Our findings could inform psychological interventions and policies for future pandemics. Customized interventions are needed to prevent negative psychological concerns and improve mental health.

Transition metal (TM) based Prussian whites, comprising a cyanide anion ((C≡N)-) and TM cations in an alternative manner, have been widely adopted as cathode materials for rechargeable batteries. Prussian whites are characterized by the TM electronic states that exclusively adopt low spin (LS) toward the C atom and high spin (HS) toward the N atom through the hybridized covalent bonding in the TM─C≡N─TM unit with the average oxidation states of the TM ions being 2+, considerably affecting the phase transition behavior upon the release and storage of carrier ions; however, there have been only a few studies on their associated features. Herein, Prussian whites with different HS TM ions were synthesized via coprecipitation and the phase transition behavior controlled by the π electron interaction between the cyanide anions and TM ions during battery operations was investigated. In situ X-ray characterizations reveal that the combined effect of π backdonation in the LS Fe-C unit and π donation in the HS TM-N unit effectively controls the bond length of the TM─C≡N─TM building unit, thus markedly influencing the lattice volume of a series of Prussian white cathodes during the charge/discharge process. This study presents a comprehensive understanding of the structure-property relationship of the Prussian white cathodes involving π electron interactions during battery operations.

Radiotherapy is commonly used to treat solid cancers located in the pelvis. A considerable number of patients experience proctitis of varying severity, even for a considerable period after radiotherapy. These side effects are often long-lasting or progressively worsen despite multiple therapeutic efforts and are a primary cause of an unexpectedly low quality of life, even after successful cancer treatment. Therefore, this study evaluated the individual and combined efficacy of ginsenoside, curcumin, butyric acid, and sucralfate compounds in treating radiation-induced proctitis. While the candidate compounds did not affect the proliferation and migration of cancer cells, they promoted the recovery of cell activity, including motility. They exhibited anti-inflammatory effects on human dermal fibroblasts or human umbilical vein endothelial cells within in vitro disease models. When each compound was tested, curcumin and ginsenoside were the most effective in cell recovery and promoted the migration of human dermal fibroblasts and cell restoration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells. The combination of ginsenoside and curcumin resulted in cell migration recovery of approximately 54%. In addition, there was a significant improvement in the length of the endothelial tube, with an increase of approximately 25%, suggesting that the ginsenoside-curcumin-containing combination was the most effective against radiation-induced damage. Furthermore, studies evaluating the effects of combined treatments on activated macrophages indicated that the compounds effectively reduced the secretion of inflammatory cytokines, including chemokines, and alleviated radiation-induced inflammation. In conclusion, our study provides valuable insights into using curcumin and ginsenoside as potential compounds for the effective treatment of radiation-induced injuries and highlights the promising therapeutic benefits of combining these two compounds.

Arabidopsis thaliana WRKY proteins are potential targets of pathogen-secreted effectors. RESISTANT TO RALSTONIA SOLANACEARUM 1 (RRS1; AtWRKY52) is a well-studied Arabidopsis nucleotide-binding and leucine-rich repeat (NLR) immune receptor carrying a C-terminal WRKY domain that functions as an integrated decoy. RRS1-R recognizes the effectors AvrRps4 from Pseudomonas syringae pv. pisi and PopP2 from Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum by direct interaction through its WRKY domain. AvrRps4 and PopP2 were previously shown to interact with several AtWRKYs. However, how these effectors selectively interact with their virulence targets remains unknown. Here, we show that several members of subgroup IIIb of the AtWRKY family are targeted by AvrRps4 and PopP2. We demonstrate that several AtWRKYs induce cell death when transiently expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana, indicating the activation of immune responses. AtWRKY54 was the only cell death-inducing AtWRKY that interacted with both AvrRps4 and PopP2. We found that AvrRps4 and PopP2 specifically suppress AtWRKY54-induced cell death. We also demonstrate that the amino acid residues required for the avirulence function of AvrRps4 and PopP2 are critical for suppressing AtWRKY54-induced cell death. AtWRKY54 residues predicted to form a binding interface with AvrRps4 were predominantly located in the DNA binding domain and necessary for inducing cell death. Notably, one AtWRKY54 residue, E164, contributes to affinity with AvrRps4 and is exclusively present among subgroup IIIb AtWRKYs, yet is located outside of the DNA-binding domain. Surprisingly, AtWRKY54 mutated at E164 evaded AvrRps4-mediated cell death suppression. Taking our observations together, we propose that AvrRp4 and PopP2 specifically target AtWRKY54 to suppress plant immune responses.

OBJECTIVES: Giant pituitary adenomas (>4 cm, GPAs) have presented great challenges to surgeons because the residual tumor in the subarachnoid space can cause hemorrhage or vessel injury following apoplexy. This study aimed to investigate the factors limiting surgical success in endoscopic skull base surgery (ESS) for GPAs. METHODS: ESS was performed on 67 consecutive patients with GPAs from 2010 to 2020. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and radiologic features and surgical outcomes. Correlations between the tumor characteristics and extent of resection were statistically presented with odds ratios (ORs). RESULTS: Preoperative visual and hormonal impairments were present in 59 (88.1%) and 55 patients (82.1%), respectively. Gross total resection (GTR) was achieved in 58.2% of patients, and the tumor remained on the lateral side of the subarachnoid space or the cavernous sinus when complete resection failed. The tumor volume, maximal diameter, multilobulated shape, cavernous sinus invasion, posterior fossa extension, and extent of suprasellar lateral extension of tumors were significantly correlated with incomplete resection. In tumors with subarachnoid lateral extension, greater distances from the medial wall of the proximal cavernous internal carotid artery to the most lateral tumor significantly increased the risk of incomplete resection for the suprasellar lateral portion of the tumor, with an OR of 1.21. CONCLUSIONS: Considerable surgical planning in ESS for GPAs is crucial for complete resection and patient safety. We elucidated that lateral extension of tumors in the subarachnoid space hindered the surgical success of the suprasellar portion of the tumor.

PURPOSE: Concomitant with the significant advances in computing technology, the utilization of augmented reality-based navigation in clinical applications is being actively researched. In this light, we developed novel object tracking and depth realization technologies to apply augmented reality-based neuronavigation to brain surgery. METHODS: We developed real-time inside-out tracking based on visual inertial odometry and a visual inertial simultaneous localization and mapping algorithm. The cube quick response marker and depth data obtained from light detection and ranging sensors are used for continuous tracking. For depth realization, order-independent transparency, clipping, and annotation and measurement functions were developed. In this study, the augmented reality model of a brain tumor patient was applied to its life-size three-dimensional (3D) printed model. RESULTS: Using real-time inside-out tracking, we confirmed that the augmented reality model remained consistent with the 3D printed patient model without flutter, regardless of the movement of the visualization device. The coordination accuracy during real-time inside-out tracking was also validated. The average movement error of the X and Y axes was 0.34 ± 0.21 and 0.04 ± 0.08 mm, respectively. Further, the application of order-independent transparency with multilayer alpha blending and filtered alpha compositing improved the perception of overlapping internal brain structures. Clipping, and annotation and measurement functions were also developed to aid depth perception and worked perfectly during real-time coordination. We named this system METAMEDIP navigation. CONCLUSIONS: The results validate the efficacy of the real-time inside-out tracking and depth realization technology. With these novel technologies developed for continuous tracking and depth perception in augmented reality environments, we are able to overcome the critical obstacles in the development of clinically applicable augmented reality neuronavigation.
