RESUMO

Autonomous generation of energy, specifically adenosine triphosphate (ATP), is critical for sustaining the engineered functionalities of synthetic cells constructed from the bottom-up. In this mini-review, we categorize studies on ATP-producing synthetic cells into three different approaches: photosynthetic mechanisms, mitochondrial respiration mimicry, and utilization of non-conventional approaches such as exploiting synthetic metabolic pathways. Within this framework, we evaluate the strengths and limitations of each approach and provide directions for future research endeavors. We also introduce a concept of building ATP-generating synthetic organelle that will enable us to mimic cellular respiration in a simpler way than current strategies. This review aims to highlight the importance of energy self-production in synthetic cells, providing suggestions and ideas that may help overcome some longstanding challenges in this field.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a low-cost three-dimensional (3D)-printed video laryngoscope (VLVET) for use with a commercial borescope. STUDY DESIGN: Instrument development and pilot study. ANIMALS: A total of six adult male Beagle dogs. METHODS: The VLVET consisted of a laryngoscope handle and a Miller-type blade, and a detachable camera holder that attached to various locations along the blade. The laryngoscope and camera holder were 3D-printed using black polylactic acid filament. Dogs were premedicated with intravenous (IV) medetomidine (15 µg kg-1) and anesthesia induced with IV alfaxalone (1.5 mg kg-1). The VLVET, combined with a borescope, was used for laryngeal visualization and intubation. Performance was evaluated by comparing direct and video-assisted views in sternal recumbency. The borescope camera was sequentially positioned at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 cm from the blade tip (distanceLARYNX-CAM), which was placed on the epiglottis during intubation or laryngoscopy. At the 10 cm distanceLARYNX-CAM, laryngeal visualization was sequentially scored at inter-incisor gaps of 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2 cm. Laryngeal visualization scores (0-3 range, with 0 = obstructed and 3 = unobstructed views) were statistically analyzed using the Friedman's test. RESULTS: Under direct visualization, the 2 cm distanceLARYNX-CAM had a significantly lower score compared with all other distanceLARYNX-CAM (all p = 0.014) because the view was obstructed by the camera holder and borescope camera. With both direct and camera-assisted views, visualization scores were higher at inter-incisor gaps ≥ 4 cm compared with 2 cm (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: During laryngoscopy and intubation, the VLVET and borescope facilitated both direct and video laryngoscopy at distanceLARYNX-CAM in Beagle dogs when inter-incisor gaps were ≥ 4 cm.

RESUMO

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA), the most prevalent form of arthritis, is a degenerative joint disease marked by the progressive deterioration of articular cartilage, leading to clinical manifestations such as joint pain. Objective: This study investigated the effects of Curcuma longa L. extract (CL) containing curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin on monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced OA rats. Design: Sprague-Dawley rats with MIA-induced OA received CL supplementation at doses of 5, 25, and 40 mg/kg body weight. Results: CL extract administration suppressed mineralisation parameters and morphological modifications and decreased arachidonate5-lipoxygenase and leukotriene B4 levels in articular cartilage. Additionally, it decreased serum prostaglandin E2, NO, and glycosaminoglycanlevels as well as the protein expression of phosphorylated inhibitor kappa B-alpha, phosphorylated p65, cyclooxygenase-2, and inducible nitric oxide synthase in the cartilage of MIA-injected rats. Furthermore, it also reduced matrix metalloproteinases and elevated SMAD family member 3 phosphorylation, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases, aggrecan, collagen type I, and collagen type II levels in the articular cartilage of MIA-induced OA rats. Conclusions: This study's findings suggest that CL supplementation helps prevent OA development and is an effective therapy for OA.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Resection of hepatic metastasis from neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) improves quality of life and prolongs 5-year survival. Ablation can be utilized with surgery to achieve complete resection. Although several studies report long-term outcomes for patients undergoing ablation, none have explored perioperative effects of ablation in patients with metastatic NETs. AIM: To determine if intra-operative ablation during hepatectomy increases risk of adverse outcomes such as surgical site infections (SSIs), bleeding, and bile leak. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the hepatectomy National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database from 2015-2019 was performed to determine the odds of SSIs, bile leaks, or bleeding in patients undergoing intraoperative ablation when compared to hepatectomy alone. RESULTS: Of the 966 patients included in the study, 298 (30.9%) underwent ablation during hepatectomy. There were 78 (11.7%) patients with SSIs in the hepatectomy alone group and 39 (13.1%) patients with a SSIs in the hepatectomy with ablation group. Bile leak occurred in 41 (6.2%) and 14 (4.8%) patients in the two groups, respectively; bleeding occurred in 117 (17.5%) and 33 (11.1%), respectively. After controlling for confounding variables, ablation did not increase risk of SSI (P = 0.63), bile leak (P = 0.34) or bleeding (P = 0.07) when compared to patients undergoing resection alone on multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: Intraoperative ablation with hepatic resection for NETs is safe in the perioperative period without significant increased risk of infection, bleeding, or bile leak. Surgeons should utilize this modality when appropriate to achieve optimal disease control and outcomes.

RESUMO

Uncontrolled growth of tumor cells in confined spaces leads to the accumulation of compressive stress within the tumor. Although the effects of tension within 3D extracellular matrices (ECMs) on tumor growth and invasion are well established, the role of compression in tumor mechanics and invasion is largely unexplored. In this study, we modified a Transwell assay such that it provides constant compressive loads to spheroids embedded within a collagen matrix. We used microscopic imaging to follow the single cell dynamics of the cells within the spheroids, as well as invasion into the 3D ECMs. Our experimental results showed that malignant breast tumor (MDA-MB-231) and non-tumorigenic epithelial (MCF10A) spheroids responded differently to a constant compression. Cells within the malignant spheroids became more motile within the spheroids and invaded more into the ECM under compression; whereas cells within non-tumorigenic MCF10A spheroids became less motile within the spheroids and did not display apparent detachment from the spheroids under compression. These findings suggest that compression may play differential roles in healthy and pathogenic epithelial tissues and highlight the importance of tumor mechanics and invasion.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder cancer is the most common malignancy of the biliary tract. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) has improved overall survival by enabling R0 resection. Currently, there is no consensus of guidelines for neoadjuvant therapy in gallbladder cancer. As investigations continue to analyze the regimen and benefit of NACT for ongoing care of gallbladder cancer patients, we examined American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database to determine if there was higher morbidity among the neoadjuvant group within the 30-day post-operative period. We hypothesized patients who underwent NACT were more likely to have higher post-operative morbidity. AIM: To investigate the 30-day post-operative morbidity outcomes between patients who received NACT and underwent surgery and patients who only had surgery. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the targeted hepatectomy NSQIP data between 2015 and 2019 was performed to determine if NACT in gallbladder cancer increased the risk for post-operative morbidity (bile leak, infection rate, rate of converting to open surgery, etc.) compared to the group who only had surgery. To calculate the odds ratio for the primary and secondary outcomes, a crude logistic regression was performed. RESULTS: Of the 452 patients, 52 patients received NACT prior to surgery. There were no statistically significant differences in the odds of morbidity between the two groups, including bile leak [odds ratio (OR), 0.69; 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 0.16-2.10; P = 0.55], superficial wound infection (OR, 0.58; 95%CI: 0.03-3.02; P = 0.61), and organ space wound infection (OR, 0.63; 95%CI: 0.18-1.63; P = 0.61). CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference in the risk of 30-day post-operative morbidity between the NACT and surgery group and the surgery only group.

RESUMO

TCP13 belongs to a subgroup of TCP transcription factors implicated in the shade avoidance syndrome (SAS), but its exact role remains unclear. Here, we show that TCP13 promotes the SAS-like response by enhancing hypocotyl elongation and suppressing flavonoid biosynthesis as a part of the incoherent feed-forward loop in light signaling. Shade is known to promote the SAS by activating PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTOR (PIF)-auxin signaling in plants, but we found no evidence in a transcriptome analysis that TCP13 activates PIF-auxin signaling. Instead, TCP13 mimics shade by activating the expression of a subset of shade-inducible and cell elongation-promoting SAUR genes including SAUR19, by direct targeting of their promoters. We also found that TCP13 and PIF4, a molecular proxy for shade, repress the expression of flavonoid biosynthetic genes by directly targeting both shared and distinct sets of biosynthetic gene promoters. Together, our results indicate that TCP13 promotes the SAS-like response by directly targeting a subset of shade-responsive genes without activating the PIF-auxin signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Madecassoside (MD) and rosmarinic acid (RA) are well-known compounds with wound healing and antiaging effects. We demonstrated the synergistic protective activity of the MD-RA combination in Hs68 cells against ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced photoaging. The cell viabilities of MD, RA, and MD-RA combinations at various ratios (9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, 5:5, 4:6, 3:7, 2:8, and 1:9, v/v) were measured to compare their protective effects against UVB radiation. The synergistic interaction between MD and RA was confirmed using a combination index. The strongest effect of the MD-RA combination was observed at a ratio of 3:7. The combination of MD-RA 3:7 exerted a synergistic effect against UVB-induced changes in cell viability, as well as superoxide dismutase activity, reactive oxygen species, glutathione, catalase activity, and malondialdehyde levels. Moreover, the inhibitory effect of the MD-RA combination (3:7) on matrix metalloproteinases and total collagen production was higher than that of MD or RA alone. These results demonstrated that the MD-RA combination (3:7) generated a strong synergistic effect against UVB-induced photoaging in Hs68 cells. Overall, our results provide scientific evidence to support the development of a new combination therapy for skin protection against UVB-induced photoaging through the synergistic interaction between MD and RA. These natural compounds are promising options for antiaging and skin protection in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

RESUMO

We sought to determine whether blade size influences the first-pass success (FPS) rate when performing endotracheal intubation (ETI) with a C-MAC video laryngoscope (VL) in emergency department (ED) patients. This single-center, retrospective, observational study was conducted between August 2016 and July 2022. A total of 1467 patients was divided into two categories based on the blade size used during the first ETI attempt: blade-3 (n = 365) and blade-4 groups (n = 1102). The primary outcome was the FPS rate. The secondary outcomes included the glottic view, multiple attempt rate, and ETI-related complications. We used propensity score matching to reduce the potential confounders between the two groups. Among these, 363 pairs of matched propensity scores were generated. The FPS rate did not differ between the blade-3 (84.8%) and blade-4 groups (87.3%) in the matched cohort (p = 0.335). The multiple attempt rate did not differ significantly between groups (p = 0.289) and was 3.9% and 2.5% in the blade-3 and blade-4 groups, respectively. The difficult glottic view (11.3 vs. 6.9%, p = 0.039) and complication rates (15.4% vs. 10.5%, p = 0.047) were significantly higher in the blade-3 group than in the blade-4 group. The FPS rates of ETI with the blade-3 and blade-4 groups in adult patients in the ED did not differ significantly.

RESUMO

Caryophyllaceae is a large angiosperm family, with many species being utilized as ornamental or medicinal plants in Korea, in addition to several endangered species that are managed by the government. In this study, we used DNA barcoding for the accurate identification of Korean Caryophyllaceae. A total of 78 taxa (n = 215) were sequenced based on three chloroplast regions (rbcL, matK, and psbA-trnH) and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacers (ITS). In the neighbor-joining tree, a higher accuracy of identification was generally observed when using ITS (>73%) rather than chloroplast regions (<62%). The highest resolution was found for rbcL + ITS (77.6%), although resolution varied according to the genus. Among the genera that included two and more species, five genera (Eremogone, Minuartia, Pseudostellaria, Sagina, and Stellaria) were successfully identified. However, the species of five other genera (Cerastium, Gypsophila, Dianthus, Silene, and Spergularia) showed relatively low resolutions (0-61.1%). In the cases of Cerastium, Dianthus, and Silene, ambiguous taxonomic relationships among unidentified species may have been a factor contributing to such low resolutions. However, in contrast to these results, Gypsophila and Spergularia have been identified well in previous studies. Our findings indicate the need of taxonomic reconsideration in Korea.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is currently the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. In patients with "borderline resectable" disease, current National Comprehensive Cancer Center guidelines recommend the use of neoadjuvant chemoradiation prior to a pancreaticoduodenectomy. Although neoadjuvant radiotherapy may improve negative margin resection rate, it is theorized that its administration increases operative times and complexity. AIM: To investigate the association between neoadjuvant radiotherapy and 30-d morbidity and mortality outcomes among patients receiving a pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Patients listed in the 2015-2019 National Surgery Quality Improvement Program data set, who received a pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic adenocarcinoma, were divided into two groups based off neoadjuvant radiotherapy status. Multivariable regression was used to determine if there is a significant correlation between neoadjuvant radiotherapy, perioperative blood transfusion status, total operative time, and other perioperative outcomes. RESULTS: Of the 11458 patients included in the study, 1470 (12.8%) underwent neoadjuvant radiotherapy. Patients who received neoadjuvant radiotherapy were significantly more likely to require a perioperative blood transfusion [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.58, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.37-1.82; P < 0.001] and have longer surgeries (insulin receptor-related receptor = 1.14, 95%CI: 1.11-1.16; P < 0.001), while simultaneously having lower rates of organ space infections (aOR = 0.80, 95%CI: 0.66-0.97; P = 0.02) and pancreatic fistula formation (aOR = 0.50, 95%CI: 0.40-0.63; P < 0.001) compared to those who underwent surgery alone. CONCLUSION: Neoadjuvant radiotherapy, while not associated with increased mortality, will impact the complexity of surgical resection in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

RESUMO

Wood is the most important renewable resource not only for numerous practical utilizations but also for mitigating the global climate crisis by sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide. The compressed wood (CW) of gymnosperms, such as conifers, plays a pivotal role in determining the structure of the tree through the reorientation of stems displaced by environmental forces and is characterized by a high content of lignin. Despite extensive studies on many genes involved in wood formation, the molecular mechanisms underlying seasonal and, particularly, CW formation remain unclear. This study examined the seasonal dynamics of two wood tissue types in Pinus densiflora: CW and opposite wood (OW). RNA sequencing of developing xylem for two consecutive years revealed comprehensive transcriptome changes and unique differences in CW and OW across seasons. During growth periods, such as spring and summer, we identified 2255 transcripts with differential expression in CW, with an upregulation in lignin biosynthesis genes and significant downregulation in stress response genes. Notably, among the laccases critical for monolignol polymerization, PdeLAC17 was found to be specifically expressed in CW, suggesting its vital role in CW formation. PdeERF4, an ERF transcription factor preferentially expressed in CW, seems to regulate PdeLAC17 activity. This research provides an initial insight into the transcriptional regulation of seasonal CW development in P. densiflora, forming a foundation for future studies to enhance our comprehension of wood formation in gymnosperms.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Although the popularity of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) is increased, there is still few clinical studies in Korea. In this study, we aimed to report the initial clinical outcomes of DMEK in patients followed up for more than 6 months. METHODS: A total of 96 eyes that underwent DMEK by a single surgeon for Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy, pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, or other indications were evaluated for best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), endothelial cell density (ECD), central corneal thickness (CCT), postoperative complications, and graft survival. RESULTS: The postoperative BCVA significantly increased compared to the preoperative BCVA by 59.4% (1.00 ± 0.77 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution vs. 0.67 ± 0.76 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution, p < 0.001). The average preoperative ECD was 754 ± 382 cells/mm2, increasing to 1,333 ± 562 cells/mm2 at 3 months (76.8%, p < 0.001), 1,334 ± 632 cells/mm2 at 6 months (76.9%, p < 0.001), 1,121 ± 474 cells/mm2 at 12 months (48.7%, p = 0.024), and 972 ± 458 cells/mm2 at 24 months postoperatively (28.9%, p = 0.445). Compared to 3 months, the ECD declined by 15.9% at 12 months (p = 0.009) and 27.1% at 24 months postoperatively (p = 0.158). The average CCT was 675 ± 113 µm preoperatively, decreasing to 581 ± 102, 574 ± 101, and 594 ± 94 µm at 6, 12, and 24 months after DMEK, respectively (p < 0.001 between all follow-up time points). Allograft rejection was detected in three (3.1%) and 14 eyes (14.6%) underwent retransplantation at an average of 10.1 ± 8.4 months after DMEK. CONCLUSIONS: DMEK is promising for maintaining corneal clarity, low postoperative complication rates, and stable graft longevity.

RESUMO

This study's aim was to investigate the association between optic disc morphology and the occurrence of paracentral scotoma in eyes with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and myopia. Two-hundred and eleven myopic eyes with OAG were classified into three groups according to the location of visual field (VF) defect (99 paracentral scotoma, 65 peripheral scotoma, and 47 no VF defect). Optic disc morphology was assessed based on the tilt ratio and eccentricity of the central retinal vessel trunk (CRVT). Clinical characteristics of the three groups were compared, and factors affecting the occurrence of paracentral scotoma were determined. Eyes with paracentral scotoma had a higher tilt ratio than the other groups (ps ≤ 0.04). Multiple linear regression showed that a nasal location of CRVT (p < 0.001), longer axial length (p = 0.001), and lower VF mean deviation (p = 0.021) were significantly associated with higher tilt ratio. In logistic regression analysis, tilt ratio was the only factor that was significantly associated with the occurrence of paracentral scotoma (odds ratio = 7.12, p = 0.032). In conclusion, the optic disc tilt ratio increased with nasal shift of CRVT, longer axial length, and lower VF mean deviation. Higher optic disc tilt was significantly associated with the occurrence of paracentral scotoma in eyes with OAG and myopia.

RESUMO

Tracheary elements (i.e. vessel elements and tracheids) are highly specialized, non-living cells present in the water-conducting xylem tissue. In angiosperms, proteins in the VASCULAR-RELATED NAC-DOMAIN (VND) subgroup of the NAC (NAM, ATAF1,2, and CUC2) transcription factor family (e.g. AtVND6) are required for the differentiation of vessel elements through transcriptional regulation of genes responsible for secondary cell wall formation and programmed cell death. Gymnosperms, however, produce only tracheids, the mechanism of which remains elusive. Here, we report functional characteristics of PdeNAC2, a VND homolog in Pinus densiflora, as a key regulator of tracheid formation. Interestingly, our molecular genetic analyses show that PdeNAC2 can induce the formation of vessel element-like cells in angiosperm plants, demonstrated by transgenic overexpression of either native or NAC domain-swapped synthetic genes of PdeNAC2 and AtVND6 in both Arabidopsis and hybrid poplar. Subsequently, genome-wide identification of direct target (DT) genes of PdeNAC2 and AtVND6 revealed 138 and 174 genes as putative DTs, respectively, but only 17 genes were identified as common DTs. Further analyses have found that PdeNAC2 does not control some AtVND6-dependent vessel differentiation genes in angiosperm plants, such as AtVRLK1, LBD15/30 and pit-forming Rho-like GTPases from plant (ROP) signaling genes. Collectively, our results suggest that different target gene repertoires of PdeNAC2 and AtVND6 may contribute to the evolution of tracheary elements.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To identify specific dry eye disease (DED) tear biomarker(s) using tear proteomic analysis, clinical parameters, and their correlations before and after DED treatment. METHODS: A prospective, double-blinded, national multicenter clinical study was performed using data from 80 DED patients. The patients were treated with 0.1% cyclosporine (CsA, n = 28), 0.05% CsA (n = 26), or 3% diquafosol (DQS, n = 26) eye drops, and tear proteome changes and clinical outcomes (tear break-up time [TBUT], corneal erosion [Cor-Er], conjunctival erosion [Conj-Er], and symptom assessment in dry eye [SANDE] scores) were observed at 4, 8, and 12 weeks. For all clinical parameters, correlation analysis was performed between the three drug conditions and the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) from the proteomic analysis. RESULTS: AFM, ALCAM, CFB, H1-4, PON1, RAP1B, and RBP4 were identified in all treatment groups and were downregulated after treatment. All clinical parameters significantly improved at 12 weeks than at baseline (p-value <0.0001); however, their values were not significantly different among groups, except for Cor-Er (p-value = 0.007). Compared with the DQS group, Cor-Er score significantly improved after treatment with 0.1% and 0.05% CsA. The seven DEPs identified in all groups were not consistently correlated with the clinical parameters (p-value >0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Despite differences in drug concentration and action mechanisms, the improvement levels of TBUT, Cor-Er, and SANDE scores were clinically adequate. However, useful tear protein biomarkers, clinically acceptable biomarker combinations correlating with clinical parameters, and clinically acceptable levels of specificity and sensitivity were not identified.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To compare the duration of regional anesthesia of the pelvic limb using bupivacaine with and without a temperature-responsive hydrogel (TRH) in dogs. METHODS: Under anesthesia using medetomidine (10 µg·kg-1 ), alfaxalone (2 mg·kg-1 ), and isoflurane, seven healthy male Beagles received four injections of 0.5% bupivacaine (1 mg·kg-1 with 5 µg·ml-1 epinephrine) to block the femoral and sciatic nerves bilaterally via ultrasound with nerve stimulation guidance. Bupivacaine was used on one pelvic limb (Bup treatment), and bupivacaine with TRH was used on the contralateral limb (Bup-TRH treatment). The nerve block was considered successful upon the absence of responses to pinching the digital pads and mid-tibial skin of both pelvic limbs with mosquito forceps; the pinch, proprioception, and locomotion tests were performed before (baseline) and at each hour after the nerve block until sensory and motor functions returned to baseline. The effect of TRH on nerve blocks was analyzed using a linear mixed model. RESULTS: The duration of the sensory nerve block at the digital pads and mid-tibial skin was longer with Bup-TRH (8.0 ± 1.6 h and 10.9 ± 1.6 h, respectively) than with Bup treatment (3.7 ± 2.0 h and 8.0 ± 1.6 h, respectively). Motor block times of proprioception and locomotion were longer with Bup-TRH (9.3 ± 1.6 and 12.7 ± 1.5 h, respectively) than with Bup treatment (4.6 ± 1.9 and 9.6 ± 1.5 h, respectively). No complications were observed. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: TRH extended the duration of regional anesthesia of the pelvic limb using bupivacaine.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Patients with colorectal cancer frequently present with liver metastases requiring either concurrent colon and liver resection or staged resection for curative therapy. The goal of this study is to determine if synchronous resection increases risk of perioperative adverse outcomes such as surgical site infections (SSIs). METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We conducted a cross-sectional retrospective analysis of the targeted hepatectomy NSQIP database from 2015 to 2019. The primary outcome was surgical site infections stratified into superficial, deep, organ space, and wound dehiscence. We performed univariate followed by a multivariate logistic regression to determine if there were higher odds of SSIs in patients undergoing hepatic resection concurrently with primary colorectal resection. Additionally, we performed stratified analyses by size of hepatic resections (partial, total left, total right, and trisegmentectomy). RESULTS: Of the 7,445 patients included in the study, 431(5.8%) underwent synchronous resection and 7,014 metachronous resection. On average, synchronous resections prolonged surgery by 62 min. There was no difference in superficial and deep SSIs between the groups; however, there was a significant difference in organ space SSIs. Patients undergoing synchronous resection had 1.51 times the odds of developing an organ space SSI (OR 1.51, 95%CI 1.10, 2.17, p = 0.04) compared to patients with metachronous resection on multivariate analysis. Patients undergoing a total right hepatectomy concurrently with a colorectal resection had 2.30 times the odds of developing an organ space SSI (OR 2.30, 95%CI 1.20, 6.86, p = 0.010). CONCLUSIONS: Prior studies demonstrated that synchronous resections are safe in properly selected patients with no difference in long-term outcomes. Few studies have explored immediate perioperative outcomes between the two approaches. After controlling for confounders, we demonstrate that synchronous resection with major hepatic surgery increases the risk of organ space SSIs. Future studies should elucidate the precise source of organ space SSIs in order to decrease the risk of this adverse outcome.
