RESUMO

IMPORTANCE: Patient-reported outcome measures provide insights into intervention effects on patients. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) emphasizes identifying priorities in daily activity engagement and evaluating an individual's perception of changes over time. OBJECTIVE: To assess the responsiveness of the COPM and the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) among patients with frozen shoulders. DESIGN: Prospective, single-blind, randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Two physical medicine and rehabilitation clinics. PARTICIPANTS: Ninety-four patients with frozen shoulders enrolled in a previous study. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Baseline and 3-mo evaluations of the COPM and other measures. Responsiveness was assessed using effect size (ES) and standardized response mean (SRM). The MCID values were determined through a distribution-based approach, which used the 0.5 standard deviation and ES methods, and an anchor-based approach, which used the receiver operating characteristic curve method. RESULTS: The ES and SRM results indicated that the COPM had high responsiveness. The distribution-based MCID values for COPM Performance and COPM Satisfaction were 1.17 and 1.44, respectively. The anchor-based MCID values were 2.5 (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.78, 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.64-0.91]) and 2.1 (AUC = 0.76, 95% CI [0.60-0.91]), respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The findings suggest that the COPM is a responsive outcome measure for patients with frozen shoulder. The established MCID values for the COPM can be valuable for interpreting changes in patient performance and satisfaction, thus aiding clinical interventions and research planning. Plain-Language Summary: This is the first study to review the effectiveness of the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) to determine the success of occupational therapy interventions for people with a frozen shoulder. The findings suggest that the COPM is an effective and valuable tool for clients with a frozen shoulder to understand their experiences and treatment priorities and to detect meaningful changes in their performance and satisfaction after an occupational therapy intervention.

We examined how maternal and paternal parental control (helicopter parenting, behavioral control, and psychological control) among college students are related to their depressive symptoms. We collected data from college students who attended a private university in Upstate New York (n = 455) and analyzed it using three-step latent class analysis. Latent class analysis identified four parental control latent classes: weak parental control, strong psychological control, strong helicopter parenting, and strong parental control. College students in the weak parental control class reported lower depressive symptoms than those in strong psychological control and strong parental control classes. In addition, college students in the strong helicopter parenting class reported lower depressive symptoms than those in strong psychological control and strong parental control classes. College students' depressive symptoms were not significantly different between weak parental control and strong helicopter parenting classes. Future researchers are encouraged to continue to acknowledge the characteristics of different forms of parental control and their influence on college students' quality of life in the transition to adulthood, considering the unique approaches of both parents.

The key to design an advanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst is a well-balance between the adsorption and desorption of oxygen intermediates. This study systematically evaluated the ORR activity of HCP and FCC cobalt core-shell cobalt/N-doped carbon (Cobalt@NC) catalyst via theoretical and experimental studies. The electronic structure calculations using density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the ORR activity of carbon layer can be improved by 1) switching the electrostatic potential in the electrical double layer due to the polarization induced at the carbon-cobalt interface and 2) modulating the electron population in the bonding orbital in the C-O bonds in an ORR. The results revealed that an O atom is bounded stronger to the outer NC shell with FCC Cobalt than HCP Cobalt, which hindered the desorption steps of OH*. Experimentally, plasma-engineered HCP Cobalt@NC also showed remarkably advanced performance toward ORR compared to that FCC Cobalt@NC. The kinetic current density of HCP Cobalt@NC at 0.85 V versus RHE is calculated as 6.24 mA cm-2, which is six folds higher than FCC Cobalt@NC and even outperform 20 wt.% Pt/C. In a practical Aluminium-air battery, HCP Cobalt@NC also exhibited slightly higher peak power density (110.57 mW cm-2) compared to 20 wt.% Pt/C.

Introduction: We aimed to uncover latent classes of maternal and paternal helicopter parenting among American and Korean college students and to examine whether latent classes of maternal and paternal helicopter parenting are associated with parent- child relationships. Methods: We conducted three-step latent class analyses using five helicopter parenting indicators for 433 mother-child and 401 father-child groups in the United States and 207 mother-child and 195 father-child groups in South Korea. Results: We identified the same three helicopter parenting latent classes (strong, weak, and managed) in mother-child and father-child groups in the United States and Korea. In addition, we found that American and Korean college students in strong and managed helicopter parenting latent classes reported better parent- child relationships than those in the weak class regardless of parents' gender. Discussion: Our findings indicate that helicopter parenting is multidimensional and can be similarly interpreted by college students in Western and Eastern societies. Further, our findings suggest that helicopter parenting could be helpful for college students to establish an intimate relationship with their parents.

We conducted a prospective study of cancer patients to investigate the efficacy, quality of life, satisfaction, and safety of a home-based intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) device during the maintenance phase of lower extremity lymphedema. This device has a unique mode designed to mimic the manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) technique and thereby gently facilitate lymphatic draining of proximal extremities. Thirty patients with stage 3 chronic secondary unilateral leg lymphedema in the maintenance phase underwent IPC and conventional compression therapy for 4 weeks at home. The participants were guided to use 1 h course (30 min of MLD-mimicking mode and 30 min of conventional mode) of IPC device twice a day for 4 weeks. We assessed the patients' limb-volume measurement, quality of life (QOL), and satisfaction four times. There were no significant time-dependent interactions in the inter-limb volume difference ratio (Vratio). In a subgroup analysis, participants who used the home-based IPC device and maintained their routine self-maintenance program of short-stretch bandages (group B, n = 21) showed a more significant decline in Vratio than those who did not maintained their routine care (group A, n = 9). All scores of QOL decreased significantly after the intervention without subgroup difference. All participants were satisfied with the 4-week intervention. This study demonstrated that a home-based IPC device with an MLD-mimicking program is a useful option for maintaining the volume of limbs and improving the QOL of patients with stage 3 chronic leg lymphedema during the maintenance phase.

Introduction: We explored latent classes of helicopter parenting among Korean and Chinese college students. In addition, we examined whether these latent classes of helicopter parenting are related to Korean and Chinese students' game and social media addictive behaviors. Methods: A three-step latent class analysis was conducted using 452 students from six universities in South Korea and 372 students from four universities in China. Results and discussion: We identified four distinct helicopter parenting latent classes among the parents of Korean and Chinese students: weak, strong, academic management, and academic and schedule management. We also found that Korean students in the strong class reported significantly higher levels of game and social media addictive behaviors than those in the other three classes, but this did not hold for Chinese students. This finding indicates that the association between helicopter parenting and college students' game and social media addictive behaviors can be differentiated within Asian cultural contexts.

A novel porcine circovirus 4 has been recently identified in China and Korea. A sensitive and specific diagnostic method is urgently required to detect the virus in field samples. We developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) the assay for the visual detection of PCV4 and evaluated its sensitivity, specificity, and applicability in clinical samples. This assay's results can be directly visualized by the naked eye using hydroxynaphthol blue after incubation for 40 min at 64 °C. The assay specifically amplified PCV4 DNA and no other viral nucleic acids. The sensitivity of the assay was <50 DNA copies/reaction, which was 10 times more sensitive than conventional polymerase chain reaction (cPCR) and comparable to real-time PCR (qPCR). Clinical evaluation revealed that the PCV4 detection rate in individual pig samples and at the farm level was 39.3 % (57/145) and 45.7 % (32/70), respectively, which were higher than cPCR (46 samples, 24 farms) and qPCR (52 samples, 29 farms) results. Cumulatively, owing to the advantages of high sensitivity and specificity, direct visual monitoring of the results, no possibility for cross-contamination, and being a low-cost equipment, the developed LAMP assay will be a valuable tool for the detection of the novel PCV4 in clinical samples, even in resource-limited laboratories.

A simple reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification combined with visual detection method (vRT-LAMP) assay was developed for rapid and specific detection of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in this study, which overcomes the shortcomings of previously described RT-LAMP assays that require additional detection steps or pose a risk of cross-contamination. The assay results can be directly detected by the naked eye using hydroxynaphthol blue after incubating for 40 min at 62 °C. The assay specifically amplified PEDV RNA and no other viral nucleic acids. The limit of detection of the assay was less than 50 RNA copies per reaction, which was 100 times more sensitive than conventional reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and comparable to real-time RT-PCR (RRT-PCR). In the clinical evaluation, the PEDV detection rate of vRT-LAMP was higher than that of RRT-PCR, showing 99 % concordance, with a kappa value (95 % confidence interval) of 0.97 (0.93-1.01). Considering the advantages of high sensitivity and specificity, simple and direct visual monitoring of the results, no possibility for cross-contamination, and being able to be used as low-cost equipment, the developed vRT-LAMP assay will be a valuable tool for detecting PEDV from clinical samples, even in resource-limited laboratories.

As bifunctional oxygen evolution/reduction electrocatalysts, transition-metal-based single-atom-doped nitrogen-carbon (NC) matrices are promising successors of the corresponding noble-metal-based catalysts, offering the advantages of ultrahigh atom utilization efficiency and surface active energy. However, the fabrication of such matrices (e.g., well-dispersed single-atom-doped M-N4/NCs) often requires numerous steps and tedious processes. Herein, ultrasonic plasma engineering allows direct carbonization in a precursor solution containing metal phthalocyanine and aniline. When combining with the dispersion effect of ultrasonic waves, we successfully fabricated uniform single-atom M-N4 (M = Fe, Co) carbon catalysts with a production rate as high as 10 mg min-1. The Co-N4/NC presented a bifunctional potential drop of ΔE = 0.79 V, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C-Ru/C catalyst (ΔE = 0.88 V) at the same catalyst loading. Theoretical calculations revealed that Co-N4 was the major active site with superior O2 adsorption-desorption mechanisms. In a practical Zn-air battery test, the air electrode coated with Co-N4/NC exhibited a specific capacity (762.8 mAh g-1) and power density (101.62 mW cm-2), exceeding those of Pt/C-Ru/C (700.8 mAh g-1 and 89.16 mW cm-2, respectively) at the same catalyst loading. Moreover, for Co-N4/NC, the potential difference increased from 1.16 to 1.47 V after 100 charge-discharge cycles. The proposed innovative and scalable strategy was concluded to be well suited for the fabrication of single-atom-doped carbons as promising bifunctional oxygen evolution/reduction electrocatalysts for metal-air batteries.

Despite the potential roles of sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) as a biomarker of osteoporotic fracture (OF), independent of bone mineral density (BMD) and clinical risk factors (CRFs), its association with bone microarchitecture, a key determinant of bone quality, have not been studied yet. We here investigated the association of S1P with the trabecular bone score (TBS), an index of the bone microarchitecture. The plasma S1P concentrations, TBS, and BMD were measured in the 339 postmenopausal women. The S1P level was inversely correlated with the TBS (γ=-0.096, p=0.049) and BMD at the femur neck (FN-BMD: γ=-0.122, p=0.025) and tended to be inversely correlated the BMD at the total hip (TH-BMD: γ=-0.096, p=0.079), but not at the lumbar spine (LS-BMD). After adjusting for fracture risk assessment tool probabilities of major OF from CRFs, the S1P level was inversely associated with the TBS (ß=-0.096, p=0.049) and FN-BMD (ß=-0.118, p=0.025) and tended to be inversely associated with the TH-BMD (ß=-0.092, p=0.083). Compared with subjects in the lowest S1P tertile, those in the highest S1P tertile had a significantly lower TBS (p=0.032) and BMD at femur (p=0.004-0.036). These findings indicated that a high S1P level in postmenopausal women was inversely associated with the both bone mass and microarchitecture, reflecting the compromised bone strength.

Low-cost, high-activity, non-precious metal electrocatalysts are needed to enhance the bifunctional oxygen activities of rechargeable Zn-Air batteries. In this study, a Fe-enriched FeNi3 inter-metallic nanoparticle/nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe-enriched-FeNi3/NC) electrocatalyst was designed and prepared using a facile method based on plasma engineering. The excess Fe-ions in the Fe-enriched FeNi3 nanoparticles led to a high degree of lattice distortion that produced abundant oxygen-active sites. The electrocatalyst exhibited excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity as well as favorable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in an alkaline electrolyte. In addition, the electrocatalyst revealed a lower potential difference (ΔE = 0.80 V vs. RHE) in a bifunctional oxygen reaction compared to that of the benchmark 20 wt% Pt/C + Ir/C (ΔE = 0.84 V vs. RHE), and most of the reported FeNi3 alloy-doped carbon catalysts. Based on DFT calculations, the lattice distortion in Fe-enriched-FeNi3/NC promoted a higher density of active electrons around the Fermi level. Owing to its great bifunctional oxygen activities, Fe-enriched FeNi3/NC was applied as an ORR/OER catalyst in the air cathode in a homemade zinc-air battery and exhibited an excellent discharge-charge voltage gap (0.89 V), peak power density (89 mW/cm2), and high specific capacity of 734 mAh/g at 20 mA/cm2, which outperformed the benchmark 20 wt% Pt/C + Ir/C electrocatalyst. In summary, this research provides a novel strategy to enhance the OER/ORR activities of transition metal-based alloys through lattice distortion defects. In addition, it provides a new pathway for achieving noble metal-free air cathode materials for the next generation Zn-air battery.

Circulating sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) levels may be a biomarker for osteoporotic fracture (OF). This study assessed whether the addition of S1P levels to the fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) could improve predictability of OF risk. Plasma S1P concentrations and FRAX variables were measured in 81 subjects with and 341 subjects without OF. S1P levels were higher in subjects with than those without OF (3.11 ± 0.13 µmol/L vs. 2.65 ± 0.61 µmol/L, P = 0.001). Higher S1P levels were associated with a higher likelihood of OF (odds ratio [OR] = 1.33, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.05-1.68), even after adjusting for FRAX probabilities. Compared with the lowest S1P tertile, subjects in the middle (OR = 3.37, 95% CI = 1.58-7.22) and highest (OR = 3.65, 95% CI = 1.66-8.03) S1P tertiles had higher rates of OF after adjustment. The addition of S1P levels to FRAX probabilities improved the area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve (AUC) for OF, from 0.708 to 0.769 (P = 0.013), as well as enhancing category-free net reclassification improvement (NRI = 0.504, 95% CI = 0.271-0.737, P < 0.001) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI = 0.044, 95% CI = 0.022-0.065, P < 0.001). Adding S1P levels to FRAX probabilities especially in 222 subjects with osteopenia having a FRAX probability of 3.66-20.0% markedly improved the AUC for OF from 0.630 to 0.741 (P = 0.012), as well as significantly enhancing category-free NRI (0.571, 95% CI = 0.221-0.922, P = 0.001) and IDI (0.060, 95% CI = 0.023-0.097, P = 0.002). S1P is a consistent and significant risk factor of OF independent of FRAX, especially in subjects with osteopenia and low FRAX probability.

Porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) is an emerging viral pathogen that has been identified in pigs with various clinical signs. For rapid and specific detection of PCV3, an advanced real-time loop-mediated isothermal amplification (rLAMP) assay that uses both assimilating probes and swarm primers were developed and evaluated in this study. The assay specifically amplified PCV3 DNA, but it did not amplify other porcine viral nucleic acids. The limit of detection of rLAMP with swarm primers was 50 PCV3 DNA copies/reaction, which was comparable to that of the real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and 10 times more sensitive than rLAMP without swarm primers. In an evaluation of clinical samples, the rLAMP assay was able to detect PCV3 DNA within 17.34 ± 4.45 min, which is more rapid than what has been previously reported for the standard qPCR assay (31.78 ± 4.60 min). Detection with rLAMP was largely in agreement with that of the qPCR with a kappa value (95% confidence interval) of 0.98 (0.95-1.00). Taken together, these results suggest that the rLAMP assay presented will be a valuable tool for rapid, specific and reliable diagnosis of PCV3 in clinical samples.

Metal-air batteries and fuel cells have attracted much attention as powerful candidates for a renewable energy conversion system for the last few decades. However, the high cost and low durability of platinum-based catalysts used to enhance sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at air electrodes prevents its wide application to industry. In this work, we applied a plasma process to synthesize cobalt nanoparticles catalysts on nitrogen-doped carbon support with controllable quaternary-N and amino-N structure. In the electrochemical test, the quaternary-N and amino-N-doped carbon (Q-A)/Co catalyst with dominant quaternary-N and amino-N showed the best onset potential (0.87 V vs. RHE) and highest limiting current density (-6.39 mA/cm2). Moreover, Q-A/Co was employed as the air catalyst of a primary zinc-air battery with comparable peak power density to a commercial 20 wt.% Pt/C catalyst with the same loading, as well as a stable galvanostatic discharge at -20 mA/cm2 for over 30,000 s. With this result, we proposed the synergetic effect of transitional metal nanoparticles with controllable nitrogen-bonding can improve the catalytic activity of the catalyst, which provides a new strategy to develop a Pt-free ORR electrocatalyst.

Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) is an aetiological agent that causes acute haemorrhagic enteritis and fatal myocarditis in dogs. Since CPV-2 first emerged in the late 1970s, its rapid evolution has resulted in three antigenic variants: CPV-2a, CPV-2b and CPV-2c. Here, we report, for the first time in Korea, two cases of CPV-2c infection in two dogs with severe diarrhoea. The complete open reading frame (4,269nt) of CPV-2, encoding both non-structural (NS) and structural (VP) proteins, was sequenced. Based on the amino acid Gln present at residue 426 of the VP2 gene, these strains were typed as CPV-2c, and were named Korea CPV-2c_1 and Korea CPV-2c_2. These strains shared 99.48% reciprocal nucleotide sequence identity and had the highest nucleotide identity (99.77%-99.34%) with Asian CPV strains isolated in China, Italy (found in a dog imported from Thailand), and Vietnam from 2013 to 2017. Phylogenetic analysis based on the non-structural (NS1) and capsid (VP2) genes revealed that Korean CPV-2c strains clustered closely to Asian CPV strains, and separately from strains isolated in Europe, South America and North America. Amino acid changes never reported before were observed in NS1 (Thr70Pro, Cys287Tyr), VP1 (Lys17Arg, Phe33Leu) and VP2 (Gln365His, Ala516Val). Additional observed mutations, including Phe267Tyr, Tyr324Ile and Gln370Arg, have been previously reported in the recent CPV-2c strains with Asian origins. These results suggest that the Korean CPV-2c strains were potentially introduced via neighbouring Asian countries.

Metal-air batteries are attracting increasing attention as a superior renewable energy conversion device due to their high performance and strong potential. However, the high cost and low stability of the current Pt catalyst is the main obstacle preventing wide industrial application. In this work, we applied a plasma process to fabricate aniline and a transition metals electrode (Fe, Co, Ni) as the carbon-nitrogen and the metal nanoparticle (NP) precursors, respectively, for selective metal/amino-N-doped carbon catalysts. All three as-synthesized catalysts exhibited dominant amino-N as the major C-N bonding state. In electrochemical testing, Co/amino-N-doped carbon showed positive E1/2 potential (0.83 V vs. Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE)). In addition, the calculated electron transfer number (n) of Co/amino-N-doped carbon at 0.5 V vs. RHE was 3.81, which was only slightly less than that of commercial Pt/C (3.97). This superior performance of transition metal/amino-N-doped carbon promotes it as an economical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst to replace expensive Pt/C in metal-air batteries.

Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs), artificially synthesized DNA analogues, hybridize strongly with DNA and are useful for fluorescence melting curve analyses (FMCA) based on the thermal denaturation of the probe-target duplex. In this study, we developed a PNA-based one-step real-time RT-PCR assay for the differential and qualitative detection of the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus genotypes PRRSV1 and PRRSV2. The specificity of the assay was analyzed in silico using previously reported primers and probes and was subsequently verified using Korean PRRSV panels and clinical samples. Seven clinical samples showing low curves with high Ct values were confirmed as negative by FMCA. The sensitivities of one-step real-time PCR for PRRSV1 and PRRSV2 were 15 and 11 copies, respectively, and the results were in 100% agreement with those of conventional RT-PCR combined with nested PCR using clinical samples. Therefore, the assay is highly specific for the detection of current PRRSV1 and PRRSV2 without non-specific amplification by FMCA.

A novel porcine circovirus 3 (PCV3) was first detected in pigs showing porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome, reproductive failure, and multisystemic inflammation in the USA. Herein, we report on PCV3 as a potential etiological agent of clinical signs, reproductive failure and respiratory distress on Korean pig farms, based on in situ hybridization, pathological, and molecular findings. Confirmation of the presence of PCV3 may increase co-infection with other causative agents of disease in Korean pig herds, indicating the need for further systemic investigation of pathogenicity and of multiple infections with PCV2 genotypes and bacteria, and the development of an effective PCV3 vaccine.

Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) has emerged in several pig-raising countries and has been a causative pathogen associated with diarrheal diseases in South Korea since 2014. In the present study, we were able to isolate and cultivate a Korean PDCoV strain (KNU16-07) in cell culture and investigate its pathogenicity. PDCoV-inoculated piglets showed watery diarrhea accompanied by acute enteritis in the natural host. Sequencing analysis demonstrated the genetic stability of KNU16-07 for at least thirty serial passages.
