RESUMO

Riptortus pedestris (Hemiptera: Alydidae) establish endosymbiosis with specific bacteria from extremely diverse microbiota in soil. To better understand ecology and evolution of the symbiosis, it is important to characterize bacterial species diversity colonizing R. pedestris and evaluate their symbiotic effects. Nonetheless, previous research was limited to a few bacteria strains such as Caballeronia insecticola. In this study, second-instar nymphs were provided with field soils and reared to adult. Then, bacteria colonizing the midgut M4 region of R. pedestris were analyzed for bacterial species identification based on the 16S rRNA gene. First, a total of 15 bacterial species were detected belonging to Burkholderiaceae. Most of R. pedestris were found to harbor single bacterial species, whereas several insects harbored at most two bacterial species simultaneously. Among the total insects harboring single bacterial species, 91.2% harbored genus Caballeronia. The most dominant species was C. jiangsuensis, not previously documented for symbiotic associations with R. pedestris. Second, in laboratory conditions, C. jiangsuensis significantly enhanced the development, body size, and reproductive potentials of R. pedestris, compared to individuals with no symbiotic bacteria. These results add novel information to better understand symbiotic bacteria community establishing in R. pedestris and symbiotic effects on the host insects.

RESUMO

Flexible capacitive pressure sensors with a simple structure and low power consumption are attracting attention, owing to their wide range of applications in wearable electronic devices. However, it is difficult to manufacture pressure sensors with high sensitivity, wide detection range, and low detection limits. We developed a highly sensitive and flexible capacitive pressure sensor based on the porous Ecoflex, which has an aligned airgap structure and can be manufactured by simply using a mold and a micro-needle. The existence of precisely aligned airgap structures significantly improved the sensor sensitivity compared to other dielectric structures without airgaps. The proposed capacitive pressure sensor with an alignment airgap structure supports a wide range of working pressures (20-100 kPa), quick response time (≈100 ms), high operational stability, and low-pressure detection limit (20 Pa). Moreover, we also studied the application of pulse wave monitoring in wearable sensors, exhibiting excellent performance in wearable devices that detect pulse waves before and after exercise. The proposed pressure sensor is applicable in electronic skin and wearable medical assistive devices owing to its excellent functional features.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The radial artery, a terminal branch of the brachial artery, typically originates at the level of the radial neck. It runs under the cover of the brachioradialis muscle, descending along the lateral side of the forearm with paired accompanying veins and a superficial branch of the radial nerve. The radial artery rewinds around the lateral aspect of the wrist, passing beneath the tendons of the abductor pollicis, extensor pollicis longus, and extensor pollicis brevis. Finally, it crossed the floor of the anatomical snuffbox. CASE REPORT: This case report presents an anatomical variant in which the radial artery runs over the radial fossa, that is, superficially of the tendons of the hand's abductor pollicis, extensor pollicis longus, and extensor pollicis brevis muscles. CONCLUSION: The variation described in this paper sheds light on the possible atypical topographical relationships of the radial artery with the neighboring anatomical structures in the wrist, which can be crucial during hand surgery procedures.

RESUMO

Apparent treatment-resistant hypertension (ATRH) is closely related to chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, the long-term outcomes and the effects of improvement in ATRH in patients with CKD are not well understood. We evaluated the relationship between the persistence of ATRH and the progression of CKD. This cohort study enrolled 1921 patients with CKD. ATRH was defined as blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg and intake of three different types of antihypertensive agents, including diuretics, or intake of four or more different types of antihypertensive agents, regardless of blood pressure. We defined ATRH subgroups according to the ATRH status at the index year and two years later. The prevalence of ATRH at baseline was 14.0%. The presence of ATRH at both time points was an independent risk factor for end-point renal outcome (HR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.04-1.92; p = 0.027). On the other hand, the presence of ATRH at any one of the time points was not statistically significant. In conclusion, persistent ATRH is more important for the prognosis of renal disease than the initial ATRH status. Continuous follow-up and appropriate treatment are important to improve the renal outcomes.

RESUMO

A 54-year-old woman receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis was admitted, complaining of diffuse abdominal pain. Peritoneal fluid cell analysis showed that the white blood cell count was 2,990 cells/mm3, with a neutrophil count of 2,510 cells/mm3. The patient was treated empirically with intraperitoneal cefazolin and ceftazidime. After 6 days, Microbacterium species grew on a peritoneal dialysate culture that had been collected on the day of admission. We analyzed the 16S rRNA gene nucleotide sequence and identified the organism as Microbacterium paraoxydans. Based on the results of the antibiotic susceptibility test, the patient was treated with intraperitoneal vancomycin and oral clarithromycin. She recovered uneventfully without interruption of peritoneal dialysis. This is a unique case of peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis due to M. paraoxydans.

RESUMO

Owing to the increasing interest in the nonvolatile memory devices, resistive switching based on hybrid nanocomposite of a 2D material, molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is explored in this work. As a proof of concept, we have demonstrated the fabrication of a memory device with the configuration of PET/Ag/MoS2-PVA/Ag via an all printed, hybrid, and state of the art fabrication approach. Bottom Ag electrodes, active layer of hybrid MoS2-PVA nanocomposite and top Ag electrode are deposited by reverse offset, electrohydrodynamic (EHD) atomization and electrohydrodynamic (EHD) patterning respectively. The fabricated device displayed characteristic bistable, nonvolatile and rewritable resistive switching behavior at a low operating voltage. A decent off/on ratio, high retention time, and large endurance of 1.28 × 102, 105 sec and 1000 voltage sweeps were recorded respectively. Double logarithmic curve satisfy the trap controlled space charge limited current (TCSCLC) model in high resistance state (HRS) and ohmic model in low resistance state (LRS). Bendability test at various bending diameters (50-2 mm) for 1500 cycles was carried out to show the mechanical robustness of fabricated device.

RESUMO

Gitelman's syndrome is a variant of Bartter's syndrome characterized by hypocalciuria and hypomagnesemia. The administration of thiazide diuretics may induce a subnormal increase of urinary Na+ and Cl- excretion in patients with Gitelman's syndrome, consistent with the hypothesis that less Na+ and Cl- than normal is reabsorbed by the thiazide-inhibitable transporter in Gitelman's syndrome. Specific mutations of NaCl cotransporter, coupled with mutant NaCl cotransporter expression studies clearly demonstrated that many of the characteristics of individuals with Gitelman's syndrome are explained by lack of function of NaCl cotransporter. We recently diagnosed a patient with Gitelman's syndrome by performing the thiazide and furosemide tests, and it is suggested that the clearance studies by diuretic administration may be of diagnostic help in Gitelman's syndrome.

RESUMO

The present study examined whether the cisplatin induced urinary concentration defect can be related to an altered regulation of aquaporin (AQP) water channels in the kidney. Cisplatin (8 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally into male Sprague-Dawley rats. The control group was without cisplatin treatment. Four d later, the expression of AQP1, AQP2, and AQP3 proteins was determined in the kidney. To specify further the primary point of derangement in the pathway that activates the arginine vasopressin-mediated AQP channels, different components of adenylyl cyclase complex were examined separately. The cisplatin treatment caused a polyuric renal failure in association with decreases of free water reabsorption. The expression of AQP1 and AQP2 was decreased in the cortex, the outer medulla, and the inner medulla, whereas that of AQP3 was decreased in the outer medulla and the inner medulla. The expression of AQP2 proteins in the apical membrane-enriched fraction decreased in parallel with that in the subapical vesicle-enriched fraction, indicating a preserved targeting. Immunohistochemistry of the outer medulla also revealed that cisplatin decreased immunoreactivity for AQP1, AQP2, and AQP3. The arginine vasopressin-evoked generation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate was attenuated by cisplatin, being most prominent in the outer medulla. However, the cyclic adenosine monophosphate generation in response to forskolin was not affected, whereas that to sodium fluoride was diminished significantly. Cisplatin also decreased the expression of Gsalpha proteins in the outer medulla and the inner medulla. These results suggest that a reduced expression of AQP water channels accounts at least in part for the cisplatin-induced urinary concentration defect.
