Purpose: In Korea, the act on hospice and palliative care and decisions on life-sustaining treatment (LST) was implemented on February 4, 2018. We aimed to investigate relevant factors and clinical changes associated with LST decisions after law enforcement. Materials and Methods: This single-center retrospective study included patients who completed LST documents using legal forms at Asan Medical Center from February 5, 2018, to June 30, 2020. Results: 5896 patients completed LST documents, of which 2704 (45.8%) signed the documents in person, while family members of 3,192 (54%) wrote the documents on behalf of the patients. Comparing first year and following year of implementation of the act, the self-documentation rate increased (43.9% to 47.2%, p=0.014). Moreover, the number of LST decisions made during or after ICU admission decreased (37.8% vs. 35.2%, p=0.045), and the completion rate of LST documents during chemotherapy increased (6.6% vs. 8.9%, p=0.001). In multivariate analysis, age < 65 (OR, 1.724; 95% CI, 1.538-1.933; p<0.001), unmarried status (OR, 1.309; 95% CI, 1.097-1.561; p=0.003), palliative care consultation (OR, 1.538; 95% CI, 1.340-1.765; p<0.001), malignancy (OR, 1.864; 95% CI, 1.628-2.133; p<0.001), and changes in timing on the first year versus following year (OR, 1.124, 95% CI, 1.003-1.260, p=0.045) were related to a higher self-documentation rate. Conclusion: Age < 65, unmarried status, malignancy, and referral to a palliative care team were associated with patients making LST decisions themselves. Furthermore, the subject and timing of LST decisions have changed with the LST act.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop the Health Belief Model scale for premature birth prevention (HBM-PBP) and evaluated its psychometric properties in women of childbearing age. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design and included 724 women of childbearing age with intentions of future childbirth or in their first trimester of pregnancy. An item pool was formulated from the literature and in-depth interviews based on the health belief model. Content validation was conducted by experts and through cognitive interviews with women of childbearing age. Construct and concurrent validity and reliability were evaluated using factor analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, and Cronbach's alpha. Results: The HBM-PBP consisted of 96 items, including perceived susceptibility (21 items, 5 subscales), severity (26 items, 5 subscales), benefits (27 items, 5 subscales), and barriers (22 items, 5 subscales). Convergent and discriminant validity were supported. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the domains ranged from 0.87 to 0.94. Conclusion: The HBM-PBP is a valid and reliable measurement scale with good psychometric properties. It can be used to measure health beliefs in women, either as a whole or in individual domains. Health professionals can leverage the HBM-PBP to discern women's health beliefs on premature birth, facilitating tailored interventions and educational efforts.

The INDUCER OF CBF EXPRESSION 1/C-REPEAT BINDING FACTOR (ICE1/CBF) pathway plays a crucial role in plant responses to cold stress, impacting growth and development. Here, we demonstrated that ATBS1-INTERACTING FACTOR 2 (AIF2), a non-DNA-binding basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, positively regulates freezing tolerance through the ICE1/CBF-induced cold tolerance pathway in Arabidopsis. Cold stress transcriptionally upregulated AIF2 expression and induced AIF2 phosphorylation, thereby stabilizing the AIF2 protein during early stages of cold acclimation. The AIF2 loss-of-function mutant, aif2-1, exhibited heightened sensitivity to freezing before and after cold acclimation. In contrast, ectopic expression of AIF2, but not the C-terminal-deleted AIF2 variant, restored freezing tolerance. AIF2 enhanced ICE1 stability during cold acclimation and promoted the transcriptional expression of CBFs and downstream cold-responsive genes, ultimately enhancing plant tolerance to freezing stress. MITOGEN-ACTIVATED PROTEIN KINASES 3 and 6 (MPK3/6), known negative regulators of freezing tolerance, interacted with and phosphorylated AIF2, subjecting it to protein degradation. Furthermore, transient co-expression of MPK3/6 with AIF2 and ICE1 downregulated AIF2/ICE1-induced transactivation of CBF2 expression. AIF2 interacted preferentially with BIN2 and MPK3/6 during the early and later stages of cold acclimation, respectively, thereby differentially regulating AIF2 activity in a cold acclimation time-dependent manner. Moreover, AIF2 acted additively in a gain-of-function mutant of BRASSINAZOLE-RESISTANT 1 (BZR1; bzr1-1D) and a triple knockout mutant of BRASSINOSTEROID-INSENSITIVE 2 (BIN2) and its homologs (bin2bil1bil2) to induce CBFs-mediated freezing tolerance. This suggests that cold-induced AIF2 coordinates freezing tolerance along with BZR1 and BIN2, key positive and negative components, respectively, of brassinosteroid signaling pathways.

Thyroid hormones modulate the cardiovascular system. However, the effects of subclinical thyroid dysfunction and euthyroidism on cardiac function remain unclear. We investigated the association between left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction and subclinical thyroid dysfunction or thyroid hormones within the reference range. This cross-sectional study included 26,289 participants (22,197 euthyroid, 3,671 with subclinical hypothyroidism, and 421 with subclinical thyrotoxicosis) who underwent regular health check-ups in the Republic of Korea. Individuals with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels > 4.2 µIU/mL and normal free thyroxine (FT4, 0.78-1.85 ng/dL) and triiodothyronine (T3, 76-190 ng/dL) levels were defined as having subclinical hypothyroidism. Individuals with serum TSH levels < 0.4 µIU/mL and normal FT4 and T3 levels were defined as having subclinical thyrotoxicosis. The cardiac structure and function were evaluated using echocardiography. LV diastolic dysfunction with normal ejection fraction (EF) was defined as follows: EF of > 50% and (a) E/e' ratio > 15, or (b) E/e' ratio of 8-15 and left atrial volume index ≥ 34 mL/m2. Subclinical hypothyroidism was significantly associated with cardiac indices regarding LV diastolic dysfunction. The odds of having LV diastolic dysfunction was also increased in participants with subclinical hypothyroidism (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.36, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.89) compared to euthyroid participants. Subclinical thyrotoxicosis was not associated with LV diastolic dysfunction. Among the thyroid hormones, only serum T3 was significantly and inversely associated with LV diastolic dysfunction even within the normal range. Subclinical hypothyroidism was significantly associated with LV diastolic dysfunction, whereas subclinical thyrotoxicosis was not. Serum T3 is a relatively important contributor to LV diastolic dysfunction compared to TSH or FT4.

This study investigated the antiobesity effects of black ginger extract (BGE) in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. Mice were divided into six groups: normal diet control (NC, AIN-93G normal diet), 60% HFD control (HFD), HFD containing metformin at 250 mg/kg b.w. (Met, positive control), and HFD containing BGE at 5, 10, or 20 mg/kg b.w. for 15 weeks. BGE administration significantly prevented HFD-induced increases in weight gain, organ weight, and adipose tissue mass. Furthermore, it resulted in decreased adipogenesis and lipogenesis-related factors, including phosphorylated mitogen-activated protein kinase, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins, sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1, phosphorylated cAMP response element-binding protein, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, fatty acid synthase, dephosphorylated ATP-citrate lyase, dephosphorylated acetyl-CoA carboxylase, and lipoprotein lipase, in white adipose tissues. Moreover, BGE administration enhanced lipolysis in white adipose tissue, as evidenced by elevated levels of adipose triglyceride lipase, phosphorylated hormone-sensitive lipase, and protein kinase A, along with reduced levels of perilipin and phosphodiesterase 3B. BGE induced thermogenesis in brown adipose tissues, as reflected by the increased expression of AMP-activated protein kinase, uncoupling protein 1, and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 and decreased levels of fatty acid-binding protein 4. In conclusion, this study provides comprehensive evidence supporting the antiobesity effects of BGE, elucidating the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in preventing weight gain, suppressing adipogenesis, promoting lipolysis, and stimulating thermogenesis. These findings suggest the potential therapeutic utility of BGE in combating obesity and associated metabolic disorders (KHGASP-2023-034).

Cancer chemotherapy often triggers peripheral neuropathy in patients, leading to neuropathic pain in the extremities. While previous research has explored various nerve stimulation to alleviate chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), evidence on the effectiveness of noninvasive auricular vagus nerve stimulation (aVNS) remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of non-invasive aVNS in relieving CIPN pain. To induce CIPN in experimental animals, oxaliplatin was intraperitoneally administered to rats (6 mg/kg). Mechanical and cold allodynia, the representative symptoms of neuropathic pain, were evaluated using the von Frey test and acetone test, respectively. The CIPN animals were randomly assigned to groups and treated with aVNS (5 V, square wave) at different frequencies (2, 20, or 100 Hz) for 20 minutes. Results revealed that 20 Hz aVNS exhibited the most pronounced analgesic effect, while 2 or 100 Hz aVNS exhibited weak effects. Immunohistochemistry analysis demonstrated increased c-Fos expression in the locus coeruleus (LC) in the brain of CIPN rats treated with aVNS compared to sham treatment. To elucidate the analgesic mechanisms involving the adrenergic descending pathway, α1-, α2-, or ß-adrenergic receptor antagonists were administered to the spinal cord before 20 Hz aVNS. Only the ß-adrenergic receptor antagonist, propranolol, blocked the analgesic effect of aVNS. These findings suggest that 20 Hz aVNS may effectively alleviate CIPN pain through ß-adrenergic receptor activation.

Rationale: Growing evidence has demonstrated that miRNA-21 (miR-21) upregulation is closely associated with tumor pathogenesis. However, the mechanisms by which miR-21 inhibition modulates the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) and improves tumor sensitivity to immune checkpoint blockade therapies remain largely unexplored. In this study, we demonstrate the precise delivery of anti-miR-21 using a PD-L1-targeting peptide conjugate (P21) to the PD-L1high TME. Methods: Investigating miR-21 inhibition mechanisms involved conducting quantitative real-time PCR, western blot, flow cytometry, and confocal microscopy analyses. The antitumor efficacy and immune profile of P21 monotherapy, or combined with anti-PD-L1 immune checkpoint inhibitors, were assessed in mouse models bearing CT26.CL25 tumors and 4T1 breast cancer. Results Inhibition of oncogenic miR-21 in cancer cells by P21 efficiently activates tumor suppressor genes, inducing autophagy and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Subsequent cell-death-associated immune activation (immunogenic cell death) is initiated via the release of damage-associated molecular patterns. The in vivo results also illustrated that the immunogenic cell death triggered by P21 could effectively sensitize the immunosuppressive TME. That is, P21 enhances CD8+ T cell infiltration in tumor tissues by conferring immunogenicity to dying cancer cells and promoting dendritic cell maturation. Meanwhile, combining P21 with an anti-PD-L1 immune checkpoint inhibitor elicits a highly potent antitumor effect in a CT26.CL25 tumor-bearing mouse model and 4T1 metastatic tumor model. Conclusions: Collectively, we have clarified a miR-21-related immunogenic cell death mechanism through the precise delivery of anti-miR-21 to the PD-L1high TME. These findings highlight the potential of miR-21 as a target for immunotherapeutic interventions.

Hot deformation constitutive analysis and processing maps of ultrasonic melt treated (UST) A5052 alloy were carried out based on a hot torsion test in this study. The addition of the Al-Ti master alloy as a grain refiner with no UST produced a finer grain size than the UST and pure Ti sonotrode. The Al3Ti phase particles in the case of the Al-10Ti master alloy acted as a nucleus for grain refinement, while the Ti atoms dissolved in the melt from the sonotrode were considered to have less of a grain refinement effect, even under UST conditions, than the Al3Ti phase particles in the Al-Ti master alloy. The constitutive equations for each experimental condition by torsion test were derived. In the processing maps examined in this study, the flow instability region was not present under UST in the as-cast condition, but it existed under the no UST condition. The effects of UST examined in this study are considered as (i) the uniform distribution of Ti solutes from the sonotrode and (ii) the reduction of pores by the degassing effect. After the homogenization heat treatment, most instability regions disappeared because the microstructures became uniform following the decomposition of intermetallic compounds and distribution of solute elements.

Naturally occurring homoisoflavonoids isolated from some Liliaceae plants have been reported to have diverse biological activities (e.g., antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic effects). The exact mechanism by which homoisoflavonones exert anti-neuroinflammatory effects against activated microglia-induced inflammatory cascades has not been well studied. Here, we aimed to explore the mechanism of homoisoflavonoid SH66 having a potential anti-inflammatory effect in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-primed BV2 murine microglial cells. Microglia cells were pre-treated with SH66 followed by LPS (100 ng/mL) activation. SH66 treatment attenuated the production of inflammatory mediators, including nitric oxide and proinflammatory cytokines, by down-regulating mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling in LPS-activated microglia. The SH66-mediated inhibition of the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome complex and the respective inflammatory biomarker-like active interleukin (IL)-1ß were noted to be one of the key pathways of the anti-inflammatory effect. In addition, SH66 increased the neurite length in the N2a neuronal cell and the level of nerve growth factor in the C6 astrocyte cell. Our results demonstrated the anti-neuroinflammatory effect of SH66 against LPS-activated microglia-mediated inflammatory events by down-regulating the NLRP3 inflammasome complex, with respect to its neuroprotective effect. SH66 could be an interesting candidate for further research and development regarding prophylactics and therapeutics for inflammation-mediated neurological complications.

PURPOSE: Recent guidelines for prognostic evaluation recommend clinicians' prediction of survival (CPS) for survival prediction in patients with advanced cancer. However, CPS is often inaccurate and optimistic. Studies on factors associated with overestimation or underestimation of CPS are limited. We aimed to investigate the factors associated with the overestimation and underestimation of CPS in patients with far-advanced cancer. METHODS: The current study was a secondary analysis of an international multicenter prospective cohort study, which enrolled newly admitted patients with advanced cancer in palliative care units (PCUs) in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan from 2017 to 2018. We obtained the temporal CPS at enrollment and performed multivariate logistic regression analysis to identify the factors associated with "underestimation (less than 33% of actual survival)" and "overestimation (more than 33% of actual survival)." RESULTS: A total of 2571 patients were assessed and admitted in 37 PCUs between January 2017 and September 2018. Older age (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.01; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-1.02; P < 0.01) and reduced oral intake (aOR 0.68; 95% CI 0.51-0.89; P < 0.01) were identified as significant factors associated with underestimation. Dyspnea (aOR 1.28; 95% CI 1.06-1.54; P = 0.01) and hyperactive delirium (aOR 1.34; 95% CI 1.05-1.72; P = 0.02) were identified as significant factors associated with overestimation. CONCLUSION: Older age was related to underestimation, while dyspnea and hyperactive delirium were related to overestimation of CPS for patients with weeks of survival. However, reduced oral intake was less likely to lead to underestimation.

Background: Transitional medication safety is crucial, as miscommunication about medication changes can lead to significant risks. Unclear or incomplete documentation during care transitions can result in outdated or incorrect medication lists at discharge, potentially causing medication errors, adverse drug events, and inadequate patient education. These issues are exacerbated by extended hospital stays and multiple care events, making accurate medication recall challenging at discharge. Objective: Thus, we aimed to investigate how real-time documentation of in-hospital medication changes prevents undocumented medication changes at discharge and improves physician-pharmacist communication. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in a tertiary hospital. Two pharmacists reviewed medical records of patients admitted to the acute medical unit from April to June 2020. In-hospital medication discrepancies were determined by comparing preadmission and hospitalization medication lists and it was verified whether the physician's intent of medication changes was clarified by documentation. By a documentation rate of medication changes of 100% and <100%, respectively, fully documented (FD) and partially documented (PD) groups were defined. Any undocumented medication changes at discharge were considered a "documentation error at discharge". Pharmacists' survey was conducted to assess the impact of appropriate documentation on the pharmacists. Results: After reviewing 400 medication records, patients were categorized into FD (61.3%) and PD (38.8%) groups. Documentation errors at discharge were significantly higher in the PD than in the FD group. Factors associated with documentation errors at discharge included belonging to the PD group, discharge from a non-hospitalist-managed ward, and having three or more intentional discrepancies. Pharmacists showed favorable attitudes towards physician's documentation. Conclusion: Appropriate documentation of in-hospital medication changes, facilitated by free-text communication, significantly decreased documentation errors at discharge. This analysis underlines the importance of communication between pharmacists and hospitalists in improving patient safety during transitions of care.


During transitions of care, communication failures among healthcare professionals can lead to medication errors. Therefore, effective sharing of information is essential, especially when intentional changes in prescription orders are made. Documenting medication changes facilitates real-time communication, potentially improving medication reconciliation and reducing discrepancies. However, inadequate documentation of medication changes is common in clinical practice. This retrospective cohort study underlines the importance of real-time documentation of in-hospital medication changes. There was a significant reduction in documentation errors at discharge in fully documented group, where real-time documentation of medication changes was more prevalent. Pharmacists showed favorable attitudes toward the physician's real-time documenting of medication changes because it provided valuable information on understanding the physician's intent and improving communication and also saved time for pharmacists. This study concludes that physicians' documentation on medication changes may reduce documentation errors at discharge, meaning that proper documentation of medication changes could enhance patient safety through effective communication.

Targeting actionable fusions has emerged as a promising approach to cancer treatment. Next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based techniques have unveiled the landscape of actionable fusions in cancer. However, these approaches remain insufficient to provide optimal treatment options for patients with cancer. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the actionability and clinical development of targeted agents aimed at driver fusions. It also highlights the challenges associated with fusion testing, including the evaluation of patients with cancer who could potentially benefit from testing and devising an effective strategy. The implementation of DNA NGS for all tumor types, combined with RNA sequencing, has the potential to maximize detection while considering cost effectiveness. Herein, we also present a fusion testing strategy aimed at improving outcomes in patients with cancer.

We developed a method to produce a soluble form of a single-chain fragment variable (scFv) targeting human epithelial growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) in Escherichia coli. By optimizing the orientations of the variable heavy (VH) and variable light (VL) domains and the His-tag, we identified the HL-His type antibody with the highest HER2-binding activity. Purification of HL-His yielded 40.7 mg from a 1 L culture, achieving >99% purity. The limit of detection was determined to be 2.9 ng, demonstrating high production yield, purity, and sensitivity. Moreover, we successfully labeled HER2+ cell lines with fluorescent dye-conjugated scFv, resulting in a significantly higher observed signal-to-background ratio, compared to that of HER2- cell lines. This highlights the potential of these fluorescent scFvs as valuable probes for HER2+ breast cancer diagnostics. Notably, the process for the complete scFv production was streamlined and required only 4-5 days. Additionally, the product maintained its activity after freeze storage, allowing for large-scale production and a wide range of practical applications.

Our study aimed to investigate the impact of environmental exposures, such as ambient air pollutants, on systemic inflammation and cellular senescence in middle-aged and older women. We utilized epidemiological data linked with exposure data of six air pollutants (particulate matters [PM10, PM2.5], sulphur dioxide [SO2], nitrogen dioxide [NO2], carbon monoxide [CO], and ozone [O3]) and blood samples of 380 peri- and postmenopausal women participants of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. We measured blood high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and age-related 27 circulatory senescence-associated secretory phenotypes (SASP) produced by senescent cells. We employed single exposure models to explore the general pattern of association between air pollution exposure and proteomic markers. Using quantile g-computation models, we assessed the association of six air pollutant mixtures with hsCRP and SASP proteins. In single-exposure, single-period models, nine out of the 27 SASP proteins including IFN-γ (ß = 0.04, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.07 per interquartile range-increase), IL-8 (0.15, 95% CI: 0.09, 0.20), and MIP1α (0.11, 95% CI: 0.04, 0.18) were positively associated with the average level of O3 over one week. Among the age-related SASP proteins, IFN-γ (0.11, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.20) and IL-8 (0.22, 95% CI: 0.05, 0.39) were positively associated with exposure to air pollutant mixture over one week. The MIP1ß was higher with an increasing one-month average concentration of the air pollutant mixture (0.11, 95% CI: 0.00, 0.21). The IL-8 showed consistently positive association with the ambient air pollutant mixture for the exposure periods ranging from one week to one year. O3 predominantly showed positive weights in the associations between air pollutant mixtures and IL-8. These findings underscore the potential of proteomic indicators as markers for biological aging attributed to short-term air pollution exposure.

Ginsenosides in ginseng are known for their potential health benefits, including antioxidant properties and their potential to exhibit anticancer effects. Besides a various range of coding genes, ginsenosides impose their efficacy by targeting noncoding RNAs. Long noncoding RNA ( lncRNA) has gained significant attention from both basic and clinical oncology fields due to its involvement in various cancer cell activities such as proliferation, apoptosis, metastasis, and autophagy. These events can be achieved either by lncRNA alone or in association with microRNAs or proteins. This review aims to summarize the diverse activities of lncRNAs that are regulated by ginsenosides, focusing on their role in regulating target genes through signaling pathways in human diseases. We highlight the results of studies on the expression profiles of lncRNAs induced by ginsenosides in efforts to inhibit cancer cell proliferation. Finally, we discuss the potential and challenges of utilizing lncRNAs as diagnostic markers for disease treatment.

BACKGROUND: Since severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was first reported in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, it has spread rapidly, and many coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases have occurred in Gwangju, South Korea. Viral mutations following the COVID-19 epidemic have increased interest in the characteristics of epidemics in this region, and pathogen genetic analysis is required for infection control and prevention. METHODS: In this study, SARS-CoV-2 whole-genome analysis was performed on samples from patients with COVID-19 in Gwangju from 2020 to 2022 to identify the trends in COVID-19 prevalence and to analyze the phylogenetic relationships of dominant variants. B.41 and B.1.497 prevailed in 2020, the early stage of the COVID-19 outbreak; then, B.1.619.1 mainly occurred until June 2021. B.1.617.2, classified as sublineages AY.69 and AY.122, occurred continuously from July to December 2021. Since strict measures to strengthen national quarantine management had been implemented in South Korea until this time, the analysis of mutations was also able to infer the epidemiological relationship between infection transmission routes. Since the first identification of the Omicron variant in late December 2021, the spread of infection has been very rapid, and weekly whole-genome analysis of specimens has enabled us to monitor new Omicron sublineages occurring in Gwangju. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that conducting regional surveillance in addition to nation-level genomic surveillance will enable more rapid and detailed variant surveillance, which will be helpful in the overall prevention and management of infectious diseases.

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) has dramatically altered the landscape of noninvasive glioma evaluation, offering complementary insights to those gained through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). PET/CT scans enable a multifaceted analysis of glioma biology, supporting clinical applications from grading and differential diagnosis to mapping the full extent of tumors and planning subsequent treatments and evaluations. With a broad array of specialized radiotracers, researchers and clinicians can now probe various biological characteristics of gliomas, such as glucose utilization, cellular proliferation, oxygen deficiency, amino acid trafficking, and reactive astrogliosis. This review aims to provide a recent update on the application of versatile PET/CT radiotracers in glioma research and clinical practice.

Iron phosphate-based coating and iron silicate-based coating were used to inhibit the oxidation of sulfide minerals in rainy and submerged environments. The inhibiting effectiveness of coating agents on the oxidation of iron sulfide minerals was investigated using pyrite and rock samples resulting from acid drainage. The film formed with both surface-coating agents was identified by pyrite surface analysis. It was also confirmed that the formation of coatings varies depending on the crystallographic orientation. The inhibitory effects under rainy and submerged conditions were investigated using column experiments. Submerged conditions accelerated deterioration compared to that under rainy conditions. Iron phosphate coating had a significantly better oxidation-inhibitory effect (84.86-98.70%) than iron silicate coating (56.80-92.36%), and at a concentration of 300 mM, H+ elution was inhibited by more than 90% throughout the experiment. Furthermore, methods for effective film formation were investigated in terms of producing Fe3+; (1) application of coating agents mixed with oxidant (H2O2), (2) application of coating agent after the use of the oxidant. In a rainy environment, applying iron phosphate-based coating using the sequential method showed oxidation inhibition effects for cycles 1-9, whereas applying the mixed material showed effects for cycles 9-13. The use of a surface-coating agent after applying an oxidant did not inhibit oxidation. The surface coating agent and the oxidizing agent should be applied as a mixture to form a film.

A novel virus infecting Stellaria aquatica plants, tentatively named "Stellaria aquatica virus C" (StAVC), was identified in Gangwon-do Province, South Korea. Its monopartite genome consists of a single-stranded RNA of 15,024 nucleotides, and it shares 38.24 to 56.2% nucleotide sequence identity with known closterovirus genome sequences. Its genome contains nine hypothetical open reading frames. These encode the multifunctional protein RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), hydrophobic protein (P7), heat shock protein 70 homolog (HSP70h), coat protein homolog (CPh), minor coat protein (CPm), and major coat protein (CP), along with proteins involved in suppressing RNA silencing. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that, based on its HSP70h amino acid sequence, StAVC is closely related to members of the genus Closterovirus within the family Closteroviridae. This is the first record of the full genome sequence of StAVC in South Korea.
