RESUMO

Reservoir computing (RC) system is based upon the reservoir layer, which non-linearly transforms input signals into high-dimensional states, facilitating simple training in the readout layer-a linear neural network. These layers require different types of devices-the former demonstrated as diffusive memristors and the latter prepared as drift memristors. The integration of these components can increase the structural complexity of RC system. Here, a reconfigurable resistive switching memory (RSM) capable of implementing both diffusive and drift dynamics is demonstrated. This reconfigurability is achieved by preparing a medium with a 3D ion transport channel (ITC), enabling precise control of the metal filament that determines memristor operation. The 3D ITC-RSM operates in a volatile threshold switching (TS) mode under a weak electric field and exhibits short-term dynamics that are confirmed to be applicable as reservoir elements in RC systems. Meanwhile, the 3D ITC-RSM operates in a non-volatile bipolar switching (BS) mode under a strong electric field, and the conductance modulation metrics forming the basis of synaptic weight update are validated, which can be utilized as readout elements in the readout layer. Finally, an RC system is designed for the application of reconfigurable 3D ITC-RSM, and performs real-time recognition on Morse code datasets.

RESUMO

The field of biomimetic electronics that mimic synaptic functions has expanded significantly to overcome the limitations of the von Neumann bottleneck. However, the scaling down of the technology has led to an increasingly intricate manufacturing process. To address the issue, this work presents a one-shot integrable electropolymerization (OSIEP) method with remote controllability for the deposition of synaptic elements on a chip by exploiting bipolar electrochemistry. Condensing synthesis, deposition, and patterning into a single fabrication step is achieved by combining alternating-current voltage superimposed on direct-current voltage-bipolar electropolymerization and a specially designed dual source/drain bipolar electrodes. As a result, uniform 6 × 5 arrays of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) channels are successfully fabricated on flexible ultrathin parylene substrates in one-shot process. The channels exhibited highly uniform characteristics and are directly used as electrochemical synaptic transistor with synaptic plasticity over 100 s. The synaptic transistors have demonstrated promising performance in an artificial neural network (NN) simulation, achieving a high recognition accuracy of 95.20%. Additionally, the array of synaptic transistor is easily reconfigured to a multi-gate synaptic circuit to implement the principles of operant conditioning. These results provide a compelling fabrication strategy for realizing cost-effective and disposable NN systems with high integration density.

RESUMO

Digital light processing (DLP) has the advantages of higher printing speed and product precision than other 3D printing technologies. However, DLP products have low mechanical strength owing to the inherent properties of photocurable materials. Graphitic carbon nitride (GCN), which is an abundant hydrogen bonding motif (-NH2, -NH), has low solubility in most solvents; thus, to use GCN as a reinforcement of the polymer matrix, optimal dispersion processes must be applied. In this study, GCN was proposed as a novel reinforcing material to improve the mechanical properties of photocurable epoxy acrylate (EA) resins for DLP. Herein, two-step (planetary mixing and ultrasonication) processes were applied to disperse GCN within EA, and the dispersion performance was identified by checking the degree of precipitation over time. To test the printability of the dispersed GCN/EA composites subjected to DLP 3D printing, cube specimens of GCN/EA composites were prepared, and the dispersed GCN/EA output had a low dimensional error of 0.3-1.3%, while the undispersed composite output showed larger dimensional errors of 27.7-36.2%. Additionally, in the mechanical test of the DLP-3D-printed sample (dispersed GCN/EA composite), the tensile strength and elastic modulus of the dispersed GCN/EA composite specimen were measured to be 75.56 MPa and 3396 MPa, respectively, which were improved by 22% (tensile strength) and 34% (modulus of elasticity) in relation to those of the neat EA specimen. This study is the first to use GCN as a reinforcement and manufacture a composite product for DLP with excellent performance (22% increased tensile strength) through the optimal dispersion of GCN. Considering the high mechanical performance, DLP products using the GCN/EA composites can be used in industries such as automobiles, shipbuilding, and aviation.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report a unique case of incomplete CES following a rebar penetrating injury in perineal region with retro-pulsed fragment, which was treated with anterior approach and discuss suitable surgical approach. METHODS: Incomplete cauda equina syndrome caused by non-missile penetrating injury is extremely rare. A 26-year-old male patient presented incomplete cauda equina syndrome due to a penetrating rebar wound from his perineal region to the lumbosacral spine. Computed tomography demonstrated a bony fragment broken from S1 body compressing into the spinal canal. RESULTS: By anterior approach, we performed partial corpectomy of L5, decompression by retrieving the bony fragment and L5-S1 interbody fusion. The patient had a significant recovery, and no clinical complication was found after over 2-year follow-up. CONCLUSION: It is challenging to determine the optimal strategy of surgical treatment for penetrating spinal injuries with retained foreign bodies, here we suggest an anterior approach situation that has the advantage of being able to effectively perform decompression and prevent iatrogenic damages of thecal sac and nerve rootlets.

RESUMO

Hardware neuromorphic systems are crucial for the energy-efficient processing of massive amounts of data. Among various candidates, hafnium oxide ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) are highly promising for artificial synaptic devices. However, FTJs exhibit non-ideal characteristics that introduce variations in synaptic weights, presenting a considerable challenge in achieving high-performance neuromorphic systems. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the origin and impact of these variations in neuromorphic systems. The analysis reveals that the major bottleneck in achieving a high-performance neuromorphic system is the dynamic variation, primarily caused by the intrinsic 1/f noise of the device. As the device area is reduced and the read bias (VRead ) is lowered, the intrinsic noise of the FTJs increases, presenting an inherent limitation for implementing area- and power-efficient neuromorphic systems. To overcome this limitation, an adaptive read-biasing (ARB) scheme is proposed that applies a different VRead to each layer of the neuromorphic system. By exploiting the different noise sensitivities of each layer, the ARB method demonstrates significant power savings of 61.3% and a scaling effect of 91.9% compared with conventional biasing methods. These findings contribute significantly to the development of more accurate, efficient, and scalable neuromorphic systems.

RESUMO

Brain-inspired neuromorphic computing systems, based on a crossbar array of two-terminal multilevel resistive random-access memory (RRAM), have attracted attention as promising technologies for processing large amounts of unstructured data. However, the low reliability and inferior conductance tunability of RRAM, caused by uncontrollable metal filament formation in the uneven switching medium, result in lower accuracy compared to the software neural network (SW-NN). In this work, we present a highly reliable CoOx-based multilevel RRAM with an optimized crystal size and density in the switching medium, providing a three-dimensional (3D) grain boundary (GB) network. This design enhances the reliability of the RRAM by improving the cycle-to-cycle endurance and device-to-device stability of the I-V characteristics with minimal variation. Furthermore, the designed 3D GB-channel RRAM (3D GB-RRAM) exhibits excellent conductance tunability, demonstrating high symmetricity (624), low nonlinearity (ßLTP/ßLTD ∼ 0.20/0.39), and a large dynamic range (Gmax/Gmin ∼ 31.1). The cyclic stability of long-term potentiation and depression also exceeds 100 cycles (105 voltage pulses), and the relative standard deviation of Gmax/Gmin is only 2.9%. Leveraging these superior reliability and performance attributes, we propose a neuromorphic sensory system for finger motion tracking and hand gesture recognition as a potential elemental technology for the metaverse. This system consists of a stretchable double-layered photoacoustic strain sensor and a crossbar array neural network. We perform training and recognition tasks on ultrasonic patterns associated with finger motion and hand gestures, attaining a recognition accuracy of 97.9% and 97.4%, comparable to that of SW-NN (99.8% and 98.7%).

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We present a rare clinical case of a metastatic spinal tumor in the 7th thoracic spine from male breast cancer (MBC). METHOD: A 62-year-old man was referred as an outpatient, complaining of continuous pain in the back and right flank that began 2 weeks earlier. The patient had no neurologic signs or symptoms but had a medical history of left breast modified radical mastectomy because of MBC. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed metastasis in the T7 vertebra and no other metastasis on positron emission tomography/computed tomography or bone scan. Separation surgery was performed with posterior corpectomy of T7 (en bloc excision), followed by stabilization with an expandable titanium cage and pedicle screws. The pathological examination of the excised T7 vertebra confirmed metastatic carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation from the breast. Adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy was performed after surgery. RESULTS: The patient had no symptoms at the 21-month follow-up. Radiologic studies showed no evidence of recurrent or metastatic lesions. CONCLUSION: MBC is extremely rare, with fewer cases of spinal metastases. Among these, patients who undergo separation surgery are even rarer. This case shows that radical surgery can be an option for MBC with spine metastasis if indicated.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Crop breeding should be accelerated to address global warming and climate change. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a major food crop. Speed breeding (SB) and speed vernalization (SV) techniques for spring and winter wheat have recently been established. However, there are few practical examples of these strategies being used economically and efficiently in breeding programs. We aimed to establish and evaluate the performance of a breeder-friendly and energy-saving generation acceleration system by modifying the SV + SB system. RESULTS: In this study, a four-generation advancement system for wheat (regardless of its growth habits) was established and evaluated using an energy-efficient extended photoperiod treatment. A glasshouse with a 22-hour photoperiod that used 10 h of natural sunlight and 12 h of LED lights, and minimized temperature control during the winter season, was successful in accelerating generation. Even with one or two field tests, modified speed breeding (mSB) combined with a speed vernalization system (SV + mSB) reduced breeding time by more than half compared to traditional field-based methods. When compared to the existing SV + SB system, the SV + mSB system reduced energy use by 80% to maintain a 22-hour photoperiod. Significant correlations were found between the SV + mSB and field conditions in the number of days to heading (DTH) and culm length (CL). Genetic resources, recombinant inbred lines, and breeding materials that exhibited shorter DTH and CL values under SV + mSB conditions showed the same pattern in the field. CONCLUSIONS: The results of our SV + mSB model, as well as its practical application in wheat breeding programs, are expected to help breeders worldwide incorporate generation acceleration systems into their conventional breeding programs.

RESUMO

Top-gate self-aligned structured oxide thin-film transistors (TFTs) are suitable for the backplanes of high-end displays because of their low parasitic capacitances. The gate insulator (GI) deposition process should be carefully designed to manufacture a highly stable, high-mobility oxide TFT, particularly for a top-gate structure. In this study, a nanometer-thick Al2O3 layer via plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD) is deposited on the top-gate bottom-contact structured oxide TFT as the interface tailoring layer, which can also act as the hydrogen barrier to modulate carrier generation from hydrogen incorporation into the active layer of the TFT during the following process such as postannealing. Al-doped InSnZnO (Al/ITZO) with an Al/In/Sn/Zn atomic ratio composition of 1.7:24.3:40:34 was used for high mobility oxide semiconductors, and an Al2O3/Si3N4 bilayer was used for the GI. The degradation issue due to the excellent barrier characteristics of Al2O3 and Si3N4 can be minimized. An oxide TFT fabricated without the interface tailoring layer exhibits conductor-like characteristics owing to the excessive carrier generation by hydrogen incorporation. However, TFTs with additional interface layers exhibit reasonable characteristics and distinct trends in electrical characteristics depending on the thicknesses of the interface layers. The optimized devices exhibit an average turn-on voltage (Von) of -0.31 V with 33.63 cm2/(V s) of high mobility and 0.09 V/dec of subthreshold swing value. The interfaces between the active layer and hydrogen barriers were investigated using a high-resolution transmission electron microscope, contact angle measurement, and secondary ion mass spectroscopy to reveal the origin of the trends in properties between the devices. The top-gate device with a hydrogen barrier using the four-cycle deposition exhibits optimum electrical characteristics of both high mobility and good stability with only a 0.04 V shift of Von under positive-bias temperature stress (PBTS). We realize a high-end, self-aligned TFT with high mobility [34.7 cm2/(V s)] and negligible Von shift of -0.06 V under PBTS by applying a subnanometer hydrogen barrier.

RESUMO

'Seolgaeng', an opaque-endosperm rice (Oryza sativa) mutant, is used to prepare high-quality dry-milled rice flour. The mutation causing its opaque-endosperm phenotype was unknown. Map-based cloning identified a missense mutation in the gene FRUCTOSE-6-PHOSPHATE 2-KINASE/FRUCTOSE-2,6-BISPHOSPHATASE 2 (OsF2KP2) in Seolgaeng. Transfer DNA insertion and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated nuclease 9 (Cas9)-induced f2kp2 mutants exhibited opaque endosperm. Rice harbors another F2KP gene, OsF2KP1. CRISPR/Cas9-induced double mutants of OsF2KP1 and OsF2KP2 (f2kp-d) possessed more opaque endosperm compared to f2kp2 single mutants, whereas the endosperm of the f2kp1 single mutant was normal. Grain hardness and damaged starch content were significantly reduced in f2kp2 mutants compared to the wild type and f2kp1. Amylose content was lower than normal in f2kp2 mutants but not f2kp1. Grain hardness and amylose content were much lower in f2kp-d than in f2kp2. Starch polymerization analysis revealed altered amylopectin structure in f2kp2 and f2kp-d mutants. F2KP activity was lower in f2kp2 and much lower in the double mutants when compared to the wild types, but f2kp1 showed no significant difference. In coleoptiles, hypoxia induced OsF2KP2 expression but downregulated OsF2KP1. These results suggest that OsF2KP2 functions as the main F2KP isoform in endosperm experiencing hypoxia, but OsF2KP1 may partially compensate for the absence of OsF2KP2. We propose that F2KP has a crucial role in inorganic pyrophosphate-utilizing energy metabolism for starch biosynthesis in rice endosperm.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to improve the oxidation resistance of graphite blocks after graphitization at 2800 °C by introducing a curing process of phenolic resin, used as a binder to control the pore size. Using the methylene index obtained from FTIR, the curing temperature was set to 150 °C, the temperature at which cross-linking most highly occurs. Graphite blocks that had undergone curing, and were carbonized with a slow heating rate, showed increased mechanical and electrical properties. Microstructural observation confirmed that the curing process inhibited the formation of large pores in the graphite block. Therefore, the cured graphite block showed better oxidation resistance in air than a non-cured graphite block. Oxidation of the graphite block was caused by pores created by pyrolysis of the phenolic resin binder, which acted as active sites.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The impact of Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD) on post-transplant mortality and indications for combined heart-liver transplant (CHLT) in adult Fontan patients remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of FALD on post-transplant outcomes and compare HT vs CHLT in adult Fontan patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective-cohort study of adult Fontan patients who underwent HT or CHLT across 15 centers. Inclusion criteria were as follows: 1) Fontan; 2) HT/CHLT referral; and 3) age ≥16 years at referral. Pretransplant FALD score was calculated using the following: 1) cirrhosis; 2) varices; 3) splenomegaly; or 4) ≥2 paracenteses. RESULTS: A total of 131 patients (91 HT and 40 CHLT) were included. CHLT recipients were more likely to be older (P = 0.016), have a lower hemoglobin (P = 0.025), require ≥2 diuretic agents pretransplant (P = 0.051), or be transplanted in more recent decades (P = 0.001). Postmatching, CHLT demonstrated a trend toward improved survival at 1 year (93% vs 74%; P = 0.097) and improved survival at 5 years (86% vs 52%; P = 0.041) compared with HT alone. In patients with a FALD score ≥2, CHLT was associated with improved survival (1 year: 85% vs 62%; P = 0.044; 5 years: 77% vs 42%; P = 0.019). In a model with transplant decade and FALD score, CHLT was associated with improved survival (HR: 0.33; P = 0.044) and increasing FALD score was associated with worse survival (FALD score: 2 [HR: 14.6; P = 0.015], 3 [HR: 22.2; P = 0.007], and 4 [HR: 27.8; P = 0.011]). CONCLUSIONS: Higher FALD scores were associated with post-transplant mortality. Although prospective confirmation of our findings is necessary, compared with HT alone, CHLT recipients were older with higher FALD scores, but had similar survival overall and superior survival in patients with a FALD score ≥2.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of adult Fontan patients require heart transplantation (HT) or combined heart-liver transplant (CHLT); however, data regarding outcomes and optimal referral time remain limited. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to define survivorship post-HT/CHLT and predictors of post-transplant mortality, including timing of referral, in the adult Fontan population. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of adult Fontan patients who underwent HT or CHLT across 15 centers in the United States and Canada was performed. Inclusion criteria included the following: 1) Fontan; 2) HT/CHLT referral; and 3) age ≥16 years at the time of referral. Date of "failing" Fontan was defined as the earliest of the following: worsening fluid retention, new ascites, refractory arrhythmia, "failing Fontan" diagnosis by treating cardiologist, or admission for heart failure. RESULTS: A total of 131 patients underwent transplant, including 40 CHLT, from 1995 to 2021 with a median post-transplant follow-up time of 1.6 years (Q1 0.35 years, Q3 4.3 years). Survival was 79% at 1 year and 66% at 5 years. Survival differed by decade of transplantation and was 87% at 1 year and 76% at 5 years after 2010. Time from Fontan failure to evaluation (HR/year: 1.23 [95% CI: 1.11-1.36]; P < 0.001) and markers of failure, including NYHA functional class IV (HR: 2.29 [95% CI: 1.10-5.28]; P = 0.050), lower extremity varicosities (HR: 3.92 [95% CI: 1.68-9.14]; P = 0.002), and venovenous collaterals (HR: 2.70 [95% CI: 1.17-6.20]; P = 0.019), were associated with decreased post-transplant survival at 1 year in a bivariate model that included transplant decade. CONCLUSIONS: In our multicenter cohort, post-transplant survival improved over time. Late referral after Fontan failure and markers of failing Fontan physiology, including worse functional status, lower extremity varicosities, and venovenous collaterals, were associated with post-transplant mortality.

RESUMO

Overexpression of Glu-1Bx7 via allele 1Bx7OE significantly contributes to high dough strength in some wheat varieties and is useful for improving wheat quality. However, the proportion of wheat varieties containing Bx7OE is quite low. In this study, four cultivars containing 1Bx7OE were selected, and among the selected varieties, Chisholm (1Ax2*, 1Bx7OE + 1By8*, and 1Dx5 + 1Dx10) was crossed with Keumkang, a wheat variety that contains 1Bx7 (1Ax2*, 1Bx7 + 1By8, and 1Dx5 + 1Dx10). SDS-PAGE and UPLC analyses showed that the expression of the high-molecular-weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS) 1Bx7 was significantly higher in NILs (1Ax2*, 1Bx7OE + 1By8*, and 1Dx5 + 1Dx10) compared with that in Keumkang. Wheat quality was analyzed with near infrared reflectance spectroscopy by measuring the protein content and SDS-sedimentation of NILs. The protein content of NILs (12.94%) was 21.65% higher than that of Chisholm (10.63%) and 4.54% higher than that of Keumkang (12.37%). In addition, the SDS-sedimentation value of NILs (44.29 mL) was 14.97% and 16.44% higher than that of Keumkang (38.52 mL) and Chisholm (38.03 mL), respectively. This study predicts that the quality of domestic wheat can be improved by crossbreeding with 1Bx7OE-containing cultivars.

RESUMO

The selection of wheat varieties with high arabinoxylan (AX) levels could effectively improve the daily consumption of dietary fiber. However, studies on the selection of markers for AX levels are scarce. This study analyzed AX levels in 562 wheat genotypes collected from 46 countries using a GWAS with the BLINK model in the GAPIT3. Wheat genotypes were classified into eight subpopulations that exhibited high genetic differentiation based on 31,926 SNP loci. Eight candidate genes were identified, among which those encoding F-box domain-containing proteins, disease resistance protein RPM1, and bZIP transcription factor 29 highly correlated with AX levels. The AX level was higher in the adenine allele than in the guanine alleles of these genes in the wheat collection. In addition, the AX level was approximately 10% higher in 3 adenine combinations than 2 guanine, 1 adenine, and 3 guanine combinations in genotypes of three genes (F-box domain-containing proteins, RPM1, and bZIP transcription factor 29). The adenine allele, present in 97.46% of AX-95086356 SNP, exhibited a high correlation with AX levels following classification by country. Notably, the East Asian wheat genotypes contain high adenine alleles in three genes. These results highlight the potential of these three SNPs to serve as selectable markers for high AX content.

RESUMO

Background: Altered coagulation is a striking feature of COVID-19. Adult patients with congenital heart disease (ACHD) are prone to thromboembolic (TE) and bleeding complications. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for COVID-19 TE/bleeding complications in ACHD patients. Methods: COVID-19-positive ACHD patients were included between May 2020 and November 2021. TE events included ischemic cerebrovascular accident, systemic and pulmonary embolism, deep venous thrombosis, myocardial infarction, and intracardiac thrombosis. Major bleeding included cases with hemoglobin drop >2 g/dl, involvement of critical sites, or fatal bleeding. Severe infection was defined as need for intensive care unit, endotracheal intubation, renal replacement therapy, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or death. Patients with TE/bleeding were compared to those without events. Factors associated with TE/bleeding were determined using logistic regression. Results: Of 1,988 patients (age 32 [IQR: 25-42] years, 47% male, 59 ACHD centers), 30 (1.5%) had significant TE/bleeding: 12 TE events, 12 major bleeds, and 6 with both TE and bleeding. Patients with TE/bleeding had higher in-hospital mortality compared to the remainder cohort (33% vs 1.7%; P < 0.0001) and were in more advanced physiological stage (P = 0.032) and NYHA functional class (P = 0.01), had lower baseline oxygen saturation (P = 0.0001), and more frequently had a history of atrial arrhythmia (P < 0.0001), previous hospitalization for heart failure (P < 0.0007), and were more likely hospitalized for COVID-19 (P < 0.0001). By multivariable logistic regression, prior anticoagulation (OR: 4.92; 95% CI: 2-11.76; P = 0.0003), cardiac injury (OR: 5.34; 95% CI: 1.98-14.76; P = 0.0009), and severe COVID-19 (OR: 17.39; 95% CI: 6.67-45.32; P < 0.0001) were independently associated with increased risk of TE/bleeding complications. Conclusions: ACHD patients with TE/bleeding during COVID-19 infection have a higher in-hospital mortality from the illness. Risk of coagulation disorders is related to severe COVID-19, cardiac injury during infection, and use of anticoagulants.

RESUMO

(1) Background: We assessed the impact of diagnostic ureteroscopy (URS) on intravesical recurrence (IVR) following radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) for upper tract urothelial carcinoma according to the type of URS. (2) Methods: Data on 491 consecutive patients who underwent RNU at two institutions between 2016 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The study population was classified according to the type of URS performed before RNU as follows: non-URS, rigid URS, and flexible URS. The study outcome was IVR occurring within 1 year of RNU. Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the risk of IVR. (3) Results: Altogether, 396 patients were included for analysis. Rigid and flexible URS were performed in 178 (45%) and 111 (28%) patients, respectively, while 107 (27%) patients did not undergo URS. IVR was identified in 99 (25%) patients. Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that the flexible URS group was significantly associated with increased IVR, compared to the non-URS group (HR = 1.807, p = 0.0416). No significant difference in IVR was observed between the non-URS and rigid URS groups (HR = 1.301, p = 0.3388). (4) Conclusions: In patients with UTUC undergoing RNU, rigid URS may not increase the risk of IVR, whereas flexible URS appears to be associated with a higher risk of IVR.

RESUMO

Abnormal formation of solid thrombus inside a blood vessel can cause thrombotic morbidity and mortality. This necessitates early stage diagnosis, which requires quantitative assessment with a small volume, for effective therapy with low risk to unwanted development of various diseases. We propose a micro-ultrasonic diagnosis using an all-optical ultrasound-based spectral sensing (AOUSS) technique for sensitive and quantitative characterization of early stage and whole blood coagulation. The AOUSS technique detects and analyzes minute viscoelastic variations of blood at a micro-ultrasonic spot (<100 µm) defined by laser-generated focused ultrasound (LGFU). This utilizes (1) a uniquely designed optical transducer configuration for frequency-spectral matching and wideband operation (6 dB widths: 7-32 MHz and d.c. ∼ 46 MHz, respectively) and (2) an empirical mode decomposition (EMD)-based signal process particularly adapted to nonstationary LGFU signals backscattered from the spot. An EMD-derived spectral analysis enables one to assess viscoelastic variations during the initiation of fibrin formation, which occurs at a very early stage of blood coagulation (1 min) with high sensitivity (frequency transition per storage modulus increment = 8.81 MHz/MPa). Our results exhibit strong agreement with those obtained by conventional rheometry (Pearson's R > 0.95), which are also confirmed by optical microscopy. The micro-ultrasonic and high-sensitivity detection of AOUSS poses a potential clinical significance, serving as a screening modality to diagnose early stage clot formation (e.g., as an indicator for hypercoagulation of blood) and stages of blood-to-clot transition to check a potential risk for development into thrombotic diseases.

RESUMO

The National Institute of Crop Science, Rural Development Administration (RDA) of Korea is presently developing new rice varieties suitable for producing Western rice-based foods, such as risotto, a well-known Italian-style product. The study considered different milled rice from five Tongil-type and six Japonica-type varieties. Besides the biometric properties, cooking behaviour, starch properties, and in vitro digestibility of Korean rice samples were compared with those of the 'Carnaroli' Italian variety. The physicochemical traits of the Korean varieties extended over a vast range; the amylose content stood out (from 13.0 to 41.7%), influencing the hardness and stickiness of cooked samples, and their starch digestibility. Although none of the Korean varieties seemed to guarantee cooking performances for risotto similar to the 'Carnaroli' one, 'Saemimyeon' and 'Shingil' cvs were judged the best for this purpose up-to-now.
