RESUMO

The in situ study of fractal microstructure in nanocarbon polymers is an actual task for their application and for the improvement in their functional properties. This article presents a visualization of the bulk structural features of the composites using pulsed acoustic microscopy and synchrotron X-ray microtomography. This article presents details of fractal structure formation using carbon particles of different sizes and shapes-exfoliated graphite, carbon platelets and nanotubes. Individual structural elements of the composite, i.e., conglomerations of the particles in the air capsule as well as their distribution in the composite volume, were observed at the micro- and nanoscale. We have considered the influence of particle architecture on the fractal formation and elastic properties of the composite. Acoustic and X-ray imaging results were compared to validate the carbon agglomeration.

RESUMO

This work proposes an approach to the formation of receptor elements for the rapid diagnosis of the state of surface waters according to two indicators: the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) index and toxicity. Associations among microorganisms based on the bacteria P. yeei and yeast S. cerevisiae, as well as associations of the yeasts O. polymorpha and B. adeninivorans, were formed to evaluate these indicators, respectively. The use of nanocomposite electrically conductive materials based on carbon nanotubes, biocompatible natural polymers-chitosan and bovine serum albumin cross-linked with ferrocenecarboxaldehyde, neutral red, safranin, and phenosafranin-has made it possible to expand the analytical capabilities of receptor systems. Redox polymers were studied by IR spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, the contents of electroactive components were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemical properties were studied by electrochemical impedance and cyclic voltammetry methods. Based on the proposed kinetic approach to modeling individual stages of bioelectrochemical processes, the chitosan-neutral red/CNT composite was chosen to immobilize the yeast association between O. polymorpha (ks = 370 ± 20 L/g × s) and B. adeninivorans (320 ± 30 L/g × s), and a bovine serum albumin (BSA)-neutral composite was chosen to immobilize the association between the yeast S. cerevisiae (ks = 130 ± 10 L/g × s) and the bacteria P. yeei red/CNT (170 ± 30 L/g × s). After optimizing the composition of the receptor systems, it was shown that the use of nanocomposite materials together with associations among microorganisms makes it possible to determine BOD with high sensitivity (with a lower limit of 0.6 mg/dm3) and detect the presence of a wide range of toxicants of both organic and inorganic origin. Both receptor elements were tested on water samples, showing a high correlation between the results of biosensor analysis of BOD and toxicity and the results of standard analytical methods. The results obtained show broad prospects for creating sensitive and portable bioelectrochemical sensors for the early warning of environmentally hazardous situations based on associations among microorganisms and nanocomposite materials.

RESUMO

Composite materials based on NiFe2O4 nanoparticles and polyethylene matrix have been synthesized by thermal decomposition to expand the application area of high-pressure polyethylene by filling it with nanoscale particles. The synthesized compositions were obtained in the form of a dark gray powder and compressed for further study According to TEM, the average particle size in composites was 2, 3, and 4 nm in samples with a filling of 10%, 20% and 30%. The concentration dependences of the specific electrical resistivity ρV, dielectric permittivity ε, saturation magnetization MS and the parameters of reflection and attenuation of microwave power of the obtained composites were investigated. The threshold for percolation in such materials is found to be within a concentration range of 20…30%. The electronic and atomic structure of composites was studied by methods of Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The closest atomic environment of nickel and iron in nanoparticles is close to that of crystalline NiFe2O4. The dependence of the nanoparticles size as well as the dependence of the number of tetrahedral or octahedral iron positions in nickel ferrite nanoparticles to their content in polyethylene matrix is established. It is shown that composite materials based on NiFe2O4 nanoparticles and polyethylene matrix can be used as components of electromagnetic compatibility systems.

RESUMO

In this work, a sensitive coating based on Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films containing monolayers of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DPPE) with an immobilized glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme was created. The immobilization of the enzyme in the LB film occurred during the formation of the monolayer. The effect of the immobilization of GOx enzyme molecules on the surface properties of a Langmuir DPPE monolayer was investigated. The sensory properties of the resulting LB DPPE film with an immobilized GOx enzyme in a glucose solution of various concentrations were studied. It has shown that the immobilization of GOx enzyme molecules into the LB DPPE film leads to a rising LB film conductivity with an increasing glucose concentration. Such an effect made it possible to conclude that acoustic methods can be used to determine the concentration of glucose molecules in an aqueous solution. It was found that for an aqueous glucose solution in the concentration range from 0 to 0.8 mg/mL the phase response of the acoustic mode at a frequency of 42.7 MHz has a linear form, and its maximum change is 55°. The maximum change in the insertion loss for this mode was 18 dB for a glucose concentration in the working solution of 0.4 mg/mL. The range of glucose concentrations measured using this method, from 0 to 0.9 mg/mL, corresponds to the corresponding range in the blood. The possibility of changing the conductivity range of a glucose solution depending on the concentration of the GOx enzyme in the LB film will make it possible to develop glucose sensors for higher concentrations. Such technological sensors would be in demand in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The developed technology can become the basis for creating a new generation of acoustoelectronic biosensors in the case of using other enzymatic reactions.

RESUMO

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a variety of bioelectrocatalytic devices that utilize the metabolism of microorganisms to generate electric energy from organic matter. This study investigates the possibility of using a novel PEDOT:PSS/graphene/Nafion composite in combination with acetic acid bacteria Gluconobacter oxydans to create a pure culture MFC capable of effective municipal wastewater treatment. The developed MFC was shown to maintain its activity for at least three weeks. The level of COD in municipal wastewater treatment was reduced by 32%; the generated power was up to 81 mW/m2 with a Coulomb efficiency of 40%. Combining the MFC with a DC/DC boost converter increased the voltage generated by two series-connected MFCs from 0.55 mV to 3.2 V. A maximum efficiency was achieved on day 8 of MFC operation and was maintained for a week; capacitors of 6800 µF capacity were fully charged in ~7 min. Thus, G. oxydans cells can become an important part of microbial consortia in MFCs used for treatment of wastewaters with reduced pH.

RESUMO

Composite nanomaterials have been prepared through thermal decomposition of palladium diacetate. The composite contains palladium nanoparticles embedded in high-pressure polyethylene. The materials were studied by a number of different physico-chemical methods, such as transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and EXAFS. The average size of the nanoparticles is 7.0 ± 0.5 nm. It is shown that with the decrease of metal content in the polymer matrix the average size of nanoparticles decreased from 7 to 6 nm, and the coordination number of palladium also decreased from 7 to 5.7. The mean size of palladium particles increases with the growing concentration of palladium content in the matrix. It is shown that the electrophysical properties of the material obtained depend on the filler concentration. The chemical composition of palladium components includes metallic palladium, palladium (III) oxide, and palladium dioxide. All samples have narrow lines (3-5 Oe) with a g factor of around two in the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra. It is shown that EPR lines have uneven boarding by saturation lines investigation. The relaxation component properties are different for spectral components. It leads to the spectrum line width depending on the magnetic field value. At first approximation, the EPR spectra can be described as a sum of two Lorentzian function graphs, corresponding to the following two paramagnetic centers: one is on the surface, and one is inside the palladium particles. Some of the experimental characteristics were measured for the first time. The data obtained indicate interesting properties of palladium-based nanocomposites, which will be useful for obtaining products based on these materials.

RESUMO

Recently, designers of electronic equipment have paid special attention to the issue of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of devices with their own components and assemblies. This is due to the high sensitivity of semiconductor microcircuits to electromagnetic interference. This interference can be caused either by natural phenomena, such as lightning strikes, or by technical processes, such as transients in circuits during fast periodic or random switching. Either way, interference implies a sudden change in voltage or current in a circuit, which is undesirable, whether it propagates along a cable or is transmitted as an electromagnetic wave. The purpose of this article is to review the works devoted to the development, creation, and investigation of modern polymeric nanocomposite materials used for shielding electromagnetic radiation and their effective application for solving problems of electromagnetic compatibility. Additionally, the approach to design EMI shielding complex media with predetermined parameters based on investigation of various properties of possible components is shown. In the review, all polymer composites are classified according to the type of filler. The issues of the interaction of a polymer with conductive fillers, the influence of the concentration of fillers and their location inside the matrix, and the structure of the nanocomposite on the mechanisms of electromagnetic interaction are considered. Particular attention is paid to a new generation of nanocomposite materials with widely adjustable electrical and magnetic properties. A wide class of modern filled polymeric materials with dielectric and magneto-dielectric losses is considered. These materials make it possible to create effective absorbers of electromagnetic waves that provide a low level of reflection coefficient in the microwave range. The model mechanisms for shielding electromagnetic radiation are considered in the paper. A detailed review of the electro-physical properties of polymer nanocomposites is provided. Multilayer electrodynamic media containing combinations of layers of filled polymer composite materials with nanoparticles of different compositions and manufactured using a single technology will make it possible to create electrodynamic media and coatings with the required electro-physical characteristics of absorption, transmission, and reflection. Within the framework of the two-layer coating model, the difference in the effects of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with conductive layers located on a dielectric and metal substrate is demonstrated. It is shown that in order to achieve optimal (maximum) values of reflection and absorption of electromagnetic radiation in the appropriate frequency range, it is necessary to fit the appropriate layer thicknesses, specific conductivity, and permittivity. Such approach allows designers to create new shielding materials that can effectively vary the shielding, absorbing, and matching characteristics of coatings over a wide frequency band. In general, it can be said that the development of innovative polymer composite materials for shielding electronic devices from electromagnetic interference and excessive electromagnetic background is still an important task. Its solution will ensure the safe and uninterrupted operation of modern digital electronics and can be used for other applications.

RESUMO

The work considered the properties of a biosensor based on a novel nanomaterial-modified thermally expanded graphite (TEGM). The main focus was on whether the procedure of additional graphite thermal expansion would affect the electrochemical properties of biosensors based on membrane fractions of acetic acid bacteria Gluconobacter oxydans. Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical analysis were used for the study. Raman spectra showed that the formation of TEGM led to its stratification into smaller particles and a better orderly layered structure with high "graphenization" degree. Modification of TEG led to the formation of additional cavities into which bacterial cells or bacterial membrane fractions could be immobilized and affect the electrical conductivity of the biosensors positively. Calculation of the heterogeneous charge transfer constants showed that processes occurring on the electrodes are quasi-reversible. The limiting stage of these processes is the transfer of an electron from a biological component on the electrode surface, not the diffusion of the analyte from the solution to the active centers of the enzyme. We showed the possibility of developing third-generation mediator-free biosensors for glucose detection based on TEGM, as well as of second-generation mediator biosensors for glucose, ethanol and glycerol detection.

RESUMO

Non-uniform mechanical strain can be easily induced at the interface of a piezoelectric semiconductive (PS) PN junction with variable cross sections by using piezoactive acoustic waves, and thus produces a giant piezoelectric field to significantly enhance the piezotronic effect. For revealing the piezotronic performance modulation in the non-uniform PS PN junction, the electromechanical field under a pair of applied end mechanical forces is studied from perspectives of theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. A one-dimensional linearized model for the PS fiber is established, which is applied for the mechanical analysis of a selected profile with the cross section varying in a specific quadratic function. Numerical results indicate that the acoustoelectric fields in the space charge region of the non-uniform PS PN junction are more sensitive to the applied mechanical forces, compared with that of the uniform junction, especially for a heterogeneous PN junction. Furthermore, the current-voltage relations of a necking PS PN junction can be modulated more easily by the end mechanical forces. Both qualitative conclusions and quantitative results can offer guidance for the piezotronic device design.

RESUMO

Properties of the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of arachidic and stearic acids, versus the amount of the films' monolayers were studied and applied for chloroform vapor detection with acoustoelectric high-frequency SAW sensors, based on an AT quartz two-port Rayleigh type SAW resonator (414 MHz) and ST-X quartz SAW delay line (157.5 MHz). Using both devices, it was confirmed that the film with 17 monolayers of stearic acid deposited on the surface of the SAW delay line at a surface pressure of 30 mN/m in the solid phase has the best sensitivity towards chloroform vapors, compared with the same films with other numbers of monolayers. For the SAW resonator sensing using slightly longer arachidic acid molecules, the optimum performance was reached with 17 LB film layers due to a sharper decrease in the Q-factor with mass loading. To understand the background of the result, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in intermittent contact mode was used to study the morphology of the films, depending on the number of monolayers. The presence of the advanced morphology of the film surface with a maximal average roughness (9.3 nm) and surface area (29.7 µm2) was found only for 17-monolayer film. The effects of the chloroform vapors on the amplitude and the phase of the acoustic signal for both SAW devices at 20 °C were measured and compared with those for toluene and ethanol vapors; the largest responses were detected for chloroform vapor. For the film with an optimal number of monolayers, the largest amplitude response was measured for the resonator-based device. Conversely, the largest change in the acoustic phase produced by chloroform adsorption was measured for delay-line configuration. Finally, it was established that the gas responses for both devices coated with the LB films are completely restored 60 s after chamber cleaning with dry air.

RESUMO

The process of formation of a Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) matrix based on a mixed monolayer of arachidic acid (AA) and 8 nm CdSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) stabilized by molecules of trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) was investigated. The change in the morphology, monolayer compressibility, and area per elementary cell of the created mixed monolayers, depending on the ratio of the components, was studied. It is shown that the change in the morphology of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers begins to occur at a ratio between the number of QDs and AA molecules of 1:24. Dendrimeric structures with a thickness of the order of 30-40 nm appear in the mixed monolayer when LB film deposition was carried out above the collapse surface pressure of a Langmuir film from only TOPO-covered QDs. Information on the dependence of the morphology of such structures on the molar ratio of the components is necessary for the production of ordered 2D nanostructures containing 0D and 1D objects with quantum bonds. Such nanostructures can be used in nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices as a sensitive sensor element. The obtained results would be relevant for any type of spherical shape nanoparticles.

RESUMO

In this research, beam focusing in lithium niobate plate was studied for fundamental anti-symmetric (A0) and symmetric (S0) Lamb waves, and the shear-horizontal (SH0) wave of zero-order. Using the finite element method, appropriate configuration of the interdigital transducer with arc-like electrodes was modeled accounting for the anisotropy of the slowness curves and dispersion of the modes in the plate. Profiles of the focalized acoustic beams generated by the proposed transducer were theoretically analyzed. Based on the result of the analysis, relevant delay lines were fabricated and transfer functions (insertion loss) of the line were measured for SH0 wave in YX-lithium niobate plate. Using an electron scanning microscope, distribution of the electric fields of the same wave were visualized. The results of this study may be useful for hybrid devices and sensors combining nano and acoustoelectronic principles.

RESUMO

It is shown that, in spite of the wave radiation into the adjacent liquid, a large group of Lamb waves are able to propagate along piezoelectric plates (quartz, LiNbO3, LiTaO3) coated with a liquid layer (distilled water H2O). When the layer freezes, most of the group's waves increase their losses, essentially forming an acoustic response towards water-to-ice transformation. Partial contributions to the responses originating from wave propagation, electro-mechanical transduction, and wave scattering were estimated and compared with the coupling constants, and the vertical displacements of the waves were calculated numerically at the water-plate and ice-plate interfaces. The maximum values of the responses (20-30 dB at 10-100 MHz) are attributed to the total water-to-ice transformation. Time variations in the responses at intermediate temperatures were interpreted in terms of a two-phase system containing both water and ice simultaneously. The results of the paper may turn out to be useful for some applications where the control of ice formation is an important problem (aircraft wings, ship bodies, car roads, etc.).

RESUMO

A dynamic model to analyze the thickness-shear vibration of a circular quartz crystal plate with multiple concentric ring electrodes on its upper and bottom surfaces is established with the aid of coordinate transformation. The theoretical solution is obtained, which can be written in a superposition form of Mathieu functions and modified Mathieu functions. The convergence of the solution is demonstrated, and the correctness is numerically validated via results from the finite element method (FEM). Subsequently, a systematic investigation is carried out to quantify the effect of the electrode size on the energy trapping phenomenon, i.e., the resonant frequency and mode shape, which reveals that the ring electrode has a great influence on the work performance of resonators. With the increase of the electrode inertia, i.e., the radius and mass ratio, new trapped modes emergence with the vibration mainly focused on the plate with partial electrodes. Besides, owing to the anisotropy, degenerated trapped modes have different resonant frequencies and the frequency discrepancy between them will become smaller for higher modes. Finally, the influence of multiple ring electrodes is investigated, and the qualitative analysis and quantitative results demonstrate that multiple ring electrodes will lead to a more uniform mass sensitivity compared with a single ring electrode. The outcome is widely applicable, which can provide theoretical guidance for the structural design and manufacturing of quartz resonators, as well as a thorough interpretation about the underlying physical mechanism.

RESUMO

In the paper, the results of production of Ag inkjet printed interdigital transducers to the acoustic delay line based on Y-cut X-propagation direction of lithium niobate plate for the frequency range from 1 to 14 MHz are presented. Additionally, morphological, structural, and electro-physical characteristics of the obtained electrodes were investigated. Mathematical modeling of the excitation of acoustic waves by these electrode structures was carried out. Comparison of the theoretical results with experimental ones showed their qualitative and quantitative coincidences. It was shown that conventional inkjet printing can replace the complex photolithographic method for production of interdigital transducers for acoustic delay lines working up to 14 MHz. The resulting electrode structures make it possible to efficiently excite acoustic waves with a high value of electromechanical coupling coefficient in piezoelectric plates.

RESUMO

The influence of humidity on the density, shear elastic module, viscosity, and thickness of the mushroom Pleurotus eryngii and Ganoderma lucidum mycelium films was studied. These data were obtained by comparing the theoretical and experimental frequency dependencies of the complex electrical impedance of bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonator loaded by mycelium film using the least-squares method. This procedure was performed for the BAW resonator with pointed films for the relative humidity range of 17%-56% at the room temperature. As a result, the changes of the density, shear elastic module, viscosity, and thickness of the films under study, due to the water vapor adsorption, were determined. It has been established that the properties of mycelium films are restored after removing from the water vapor. So, these results show the possibility of using investigated mycelium films as sensitive layers for acoustic humidity sensors.

RESUMO

The acoustoelectric effect is the generation of a acoustoelectric current in a non-biased device by a piezoactive acoustic wave. This effect has recently attracted the attention of researchers as a possible method to control the motion of massive objects in the quantum regime. We suggest using this effect for development of highly sensitive nanoelectronic sensors. The sensitivity could be increased through the use of modulation mode of operation based on the acoustic pilot signal and the transition from quasi-stationary measurement to measurement at the modulation frequency. The acoustic delay line based on shear-horizontal acoustic wave of zero order (SH0) with resonant frequency 3.25 MHz in Y-X LiNbO3 plate was produced. The nanostructure consisting of nanowire with size 20 nm × 180 nm was placed in the center between IDTs. The current-voltage characteristics of this nanowire in the presence and absence of the acoustic wave were meazured by a picoampermeter. The analysis has shown that the presence of piezoactive acoustic wave is influenced by electric current in a nanowire.

RESUMO

This paper considers the effect of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the parameters of Gluconobacter oxydans microbial biosensors. MWCNTs were shown not to affect the structural integrity of microbial cells and their respiratory activity. The positive results from using MWCNTs were due to a decrease in the impedance of the electrode. The total impedance of the system decreased significantly, from 9000 kOhm (G. oxydans/chitosan composite) to 600 kOhm (G. oxydans/MWCNTs/chitosan). Modification of the amperometric biosensor with nanotubes led to an increase in the maximal signal from 65 to 869 nA for glucose and from 181 to 1048 nA for ethanol. The biosensor sensitivity also increased 4- and 5-fold, respectively, for each of the substrates. However, the addition of MWCNTs reduced the affinity of respiratory chain enzymes to their substrates (both sugars and alcohols). Moreover, the minimal detection limits were not reduced despite a sensitivity increase. The use of MWCNTs thus improved only some microbial biosensor parameters.

RESUMO

The characteristics of an electrochemical biosensor based on a Prussian-blue screen-printed electrode containing glucose oxidase incorporated into polyelectrolyte microcapsules (PMC) are considered. PMC with the embedded enzyme were formed using sodium polystyrene sulfonate and poly(allylamine hydrochloride). The characteristics were compared with those of the enzyme immobilized in chitosan gel. We assessed the dependences of biosensor signals on the composition of the buffer solution, on the glucose concentration; the operational and long-term stabilities. The enzyme immobilized in PMC proved to be more sensitive to buffer molarity at a maximum within 35 - 40 mM. The apparent Michaelis constants were 1.5 and 4.1 mM at the immobilization in, respectively, chitosan and PMC. The developed biosensors were used to assay commercial juices. The biosensors' data on the glucose contents were shown to have a high correlation with the standard spectrophotometric assay (0.92 - 0.95%), which implies a possible application of the fabricated biosensors in foodstuff analysis.

RESUMO

This work investigated changes in the biochemical parameters of multilayer membrane structures, emerging at their modification with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The structures were represented by polyelectrolyte microcapsules (PMCs) containing glucose oxidase (GOx). PMCs were made using sodium polystyrene sulfonate (polyanion) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (polycation). Three compositions were considered: with MWCNTs incorporated between polyelectrolyte layers; with MWCNTs inserted into the hollow of the microcapsule; and with MWCNTs incorporated simultaneously into the hollow and between polyelectrolyte layers. The impedance spectra showed modifications using MWCNTs to cause a significant decrease in the PMC active resistance from 2560 to 25 kOhm. The cyclic current-voltage curves featured a current rise at modifications of multilayer MWCNT structures. A PMC-based composition was the basis of a receptor element of an amperometric biosensor. The sensitivity of glucose detection by the biosensor was 0.30 and 0.05 µA/mM for PMCs/MWCNTs/GOx and PMCs/GOx compositions, respectively. The biosensor was insensitive to the presence of ethanol or citric acid in the sample. Polyelectrolyte microcapsules based on a multilayer membrane incorporating the enzyme and MWCNTs can be efficient in developing biosensors and microbial fuel cells.
