RESUMO

We present a new optomechanical device where the motion of a micromechanical membrane couples to a microwave resonance of a three-dimensional superconducting cavity. With this architecture, we realize ultrastrong parametric coupling, where the coupling not only exceeds the dissipation in the system but also rivals the mechanical frequency itself. In this regime, the optomechanical interaction induces a frequency splitting between the hybridized normal modes that reaches 88% of the bare mechanical frequency, limited by the fundamental parametric instability. The coupling also exceeds the mechanical thermal decoherence rate, enabling new applications in ultrafast quantum state transfer and entanglement generation.

RESUMO

Spontaneous photon scattering by an atomic qubit is a notable example of environment-induced error and is a fundamental limit to the fidelity of quantum operations. In the scattering process, the qubit loses its distinctive and coherent character owing to its entanglement with the photon. Using a single trapped ion, we show that by utilizing the information carried by the photon, we are able to coherently reverse this process and correct for the scattering error. We further used quantum process tomography to characterize the photon-scattering error and its correction scheme and demonstrate a correction fidelity greater than 85% whenever a photon was measured.

RESUMO

The role of stress and immunological abnormalities, as well as the neuroendocrine regulation of these two variables, in illnesses in Gulf War veterans (GWVs) is unknown. Many GWV patients complain of skin and joint problems, that is, disorders that may have a common immunological basis. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an anxiety disorder associated with chronic stress, is diagnosed in approximately 10% of the Alabama GWVs. Chronic stress can lead to a reduced capacity to resist disease. Recent work suggests that a dysregulated balance of cytokines produced by T helper cells of the immune system can play a significant role in stress-related illnesses. Indeed, a balanced immune response (cell-mediated and humoral immunity) is an important defense mechanism, and cytokines can regulate this balance. It is therefore plausible that stress-induced changes in hormones (such as cortisol and catecholamines) and cytokines, both of which have been implicated in altering levels of cellular or humoral immunity, may play a role in GWV illnesses.
