RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The internet is a valuable tool for access to health-related information. There is limited literature regarding its use by parents of children with surgical conditions. AIM: To investigate internet usage by parents seeking information about the surgical conditions of their offspring in relation to epidemiological factors such as family residential area and parental educational level and to subsequently review the literature regarding this topic. METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire about internet usage was completed by eligible parents of children who were admitted to our clinic for minor surgical procedures during a six-month period. RESULTS: Our results demonstrated that the internet has been mostly used by mothers for children's health information. Google was the most commonly used search engine, while pediatricians were the first parental choice for 'live' information. Only one-quarter of the parents informed their doctor about the information found online. Nine of ten parents had a positive opinion of an official website managed by the doctors of our clinic. Our results mostly agreed with the international literature. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the establishment of official websites (designed and managed by specialists) that parents can access to receive appropriate health information is mandatory in the internet era.

RESUMO

Lumbosacral fracture-dislocation is a rare occurrence. There are more than 73 cases reported in the English literature. We report on the imaging findings and surgical treatment in a patient suffered of unilateral traumatic L5-S1 dislocation associated with severe disruption of the posterior ligamentous complex. The patient underwent open reduction and stabilization of L4-S1 vertebrae with posterior instrumentation system. Open reduction and internal fixation was mandatory as post-traumatic ligamentous insufficiency would lead to abnormal motion. Operative treatment managed to produce a solid arthrodesis and restore stability of the lumbosacral junction. Follow-up revealed excellent results. This study reports a rare injury of the lumbosacral junction, and the literature concerning this unusual condition is extensively reviewed.

RESUMO

The catecholic derivative 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA or pyrocatechuic acid) represents a diversity of actions in enzymatic processes. In the present study DFT calculations (at the B3LYP/TZVP level of theory) have been performed for neutral 2,3DHBA and its dimer (models 1-1a), several semiquinone forms of 2,3-DHBA, namely the neutral (models 2-4), the monoionized (models 5-7), the di-ionized (models 8) and the dimer 7a. The more stable species in each case are those with the carboxyl group protonated. Oxygenated adducts were also constructed (models 10-15) in which the dioxygen is either H-bonded to the catecholic or carboxylic hydrogen or it is concerned to act on the intradiol or extradiol carbon atoms. The side-on placement of O(2) on C(2) facilitates the intradiol C-C cleavage. Protonation of the oxygenated on C(1) adduct leads to decarboxylation of 2,3-DHBA. Isolation in the solid state and characterization by ESMS, IR, NMR, electronic spectra of the blue-green oxidized product of 2,3-DHBA (solid 1) supports the possibility of the existence of the semiquinone form or the hydroperoxide-adduct. Experimental spectroscopic data are correlated to the calculated spectroscopic parameters. In the ESMS the decarboxylation and degradation products as well a peroxo-adduct have been detected. Oxygenated species may also account for the plethora of redox signals in the cyclic voltammograms of solid 1 (in DMSO solutions).

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Whether visual impairment influences the prevalence of scoliosis in humans or not remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of scoliosis in blind women in a Mediterranean region. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A total of 26 blind women aged 40 years (median, range 20 - 67) were screened for scoliosis. The existence of a possible trunk hump was measured by the forward bending test using the Pruijis Scoliometer. Reading of an Angle of Trunk Inclination (ATI) greater or equal to 7 degrees was used as a cut-off criterion for radiological examination. Standing postero-anterior and lateral spinal radiographs were obtained. Menarche and circadian rhythm was recorded. RESULTS: 11 out of 26 women had a scoliosis with an average Cobb angle of 19 degrees (range 12 - 28). The average ATI was 8 degrees. Thoracolumbar was the most common type of curve identified (9 out of 11, 6 were to the right and 3 to the left). The median age of menarche was 13 years (range, 11 - 15). None of the blind women reported any difficulty sleeping and had a circadian rhythm related to a 24-hour day. DISCUSSION: The prevalence of scoliosis was 42.3%, while the prevalence in the general population in the same regime is 2.9%. Blind women had a later age of menarche (13 versus 12.58 yrs) compared with normal girls. The postural etiology of scoliosis in blind people has been reported. The possible role of light in association to melatonin production, age at menarche and high prevalence of scoliosis in blind women is presented and discussed.
