RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We aimed to analyze reactions to tweets that employed weight-based discrimination terms and to compare them to others posted by the same users on X (formerly Twitter). METHODS: We collected tweets featuring weight-based discrimination terms (the study group) and created a control group by randomly selecting up to five tweets from each account that did not mention any such terms. Descriptive statistics, sentiment analysis, and logistic regression modeling were used to compare the numbers of likes and retweets of the study and control groups, and to understand the emotions associated with these tweets. RESULTS: Our analysis included 22,075 study group tweets and 50,341 control group tweets. Sentiment analysis was conducted on 41,403 (57.2%) tweets, with 65.7% of the study group tweets being found to contain negative sentiments. The study group had a higher median of likes (1 [0-4]) and retweets (0 [0-0]) than the control group (1 [0-2] and 0 [0-0], respectively, with the study group obtaining higher mean ranks in both comparisons, P < 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that tweets using weight-based discrimination terms gained more likes (OR = 1.22; 95% CI: 1.16-1.28) and retweets (OR = 1.61; 95% CI: 1.49-1.74), independent of, for example, verification status, follower count, year and season of the tweet, and emotional expression of the tweet. CONCLUSIONS: Tweets concerning fatphobia, body shaming, and similar terms gain more reactions than others posted by the same accounts.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Fast food chains have introduced many plant-based meals to their menus. We aimed to compare the nutrient composition and allergenic content of plant-based (vegan or vegetarian) meals in fast food chains with their animal-based equivalents. METHODS: E-menus from 50 fast food chains across 5 countries (Australia, Canada, Poland, the UK, and the US) were analyzed. Data on meal type, weight, calories, macronutrients, sodium, fiber, and allergen presence were gathered. Plant-based meals were matched with meat counterparts, where the latter shared the same meal type, originated from the same country and chain, and showed a weight difference of less than 10%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed. RESULTS: From n = 2455 records, n = 1868 unique meals were matched. Plant-based meals showed lower odds ratios (OR) for protein (OR, 0.10; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.08-0.14) and sodium (OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.55-0.90) and higher odds for carbohydrates (OR, 1.87; 95% CI, 1.41-2.49), sugar (OR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.12-1.82), and fiber (OR, 4.87; 95% CI, 3.60-6.63) compared with omnivorous meals, adjusted for country, meal type, and meal weight. Notably, plant-based and omnivorous meals were not associated with total caloric content. Separate analyses of vegetarian and vegan meals yielded similar results. Omnivorous meals more frequently contained allergens such as dairy, eggs, fish, shellfish, and mustard, whereas plant-based meals more likely contained allergens such as sesame, seeds, and nuts. CONCLUSIONS: Plant-based fast food meals were more likely to contain more carbohydrates, sugar, and fiber and less protein and sodium than their animal-based counterparts. These findings emphasize the importance of informed food choices in the fast food context.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Many individuals search for obesity treatment options on the Internet. We aimed to analyze the popularity of pharmacological and surgical obesity treatment methods searched by Google users. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used Google Trends to identify topics representing the following: recommended surgical methods (n = 9), recommended pharmacological methods (n = 10), and not recommended pharmacological methods (n = 34). The data was generated for 2004-2022 and 2020-2022. Relative search volume (RSV) was adjusted using "Gastric bypass surgery" as a benchmark. We analyzed the geographical and temporal trends of the topics. RESULTS: In 2004-2022, the topics representing recommended surgical methods numerically gained the most popularity among Google users, but in 2020-2022 the recommended drugs exceeded other obesity treatment methods. The most popular individual topics since 2004 were "flaxseed," "Spirulina," "Carnitine," "Bariatric surgery," and "Orlistat." The most dynamic increases of searches since 2004 were observed for "Sleeve gastrectomy," "Curcumin," "Psyllium," and "Bupropion/Naltrexon." Since 2018, topics representing GLP-1 analogs such as "Semaglutide" and "Saxenda" revealed exponential increases in RSV, causing that "Semaglutide" to become the fourth most popular topic in 2020-2022. CONCLUSIONS: Google users across the world were the most interested in topics representing bariatric surgery, but recently recommended drugs for the treatment of obesity gained the most attention. The most popular individual topics were dietary supplements with uncertain effects on weight loss.

RESUMO

Purpose: The rise in morbid obesity presents diagnostic challenges in computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and endoscopy. Research on the availability of these procedures for people with extreme obesity is limited. We aimed to analyse the accessibility of CT, MRI, and endoscopy procedures for people with extreme obesity in a significant sample of facilities serving in the Polish public healthcare system. Material and methods: A telephone-based survey was conducted on healthcare facilities offering CT, MRI, or endoscopy procedures, identified using the Polish National Health Fund (NFZ) API. A refined questionnaire was utilized after a pilot study to collect details on the equipment's weight and diameter capacities, among other parameters. Of the initial 312 facilities sampled, 195 were eligible and successfully contacted, representing 9.4% of the facilities offering the procedures in the NFZ database. Results: Of the 195 facilities, 86.4% of CT departments knew their scanner's maximum weight, 57.6% its diameter; 76.5% of MRI departments recognized their scanner's weight, and 59.2% its diameter, while 77.3% of endoscopy departments were aware of their maximum weight capacity. Approximately 28% of CT, 5% of MRI, and 39% of endoscopy departments could perform the procedure if the patient's weight was over 200 kg. Facilities knowledgeable about CT's maximum diameter and MRI's maximum weight often provided private CT/MRI services. Conclusions: A significant proportion of Polish facilities providing CT, MRI, and endoscopic examinations in the Polish public healthcare system were unaware of their equipment's weight and diameter limits. Merely 5% of the surveyed MRI facilities could potentially accommodate a patient weighing over 200 kg.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Wnt-1 signaling pathway protein 1 (WISP-1) and complement-C1q TNF-related protein 1 (CTRP1) are adipokines with possible opposite effects in regulating insulin sensitivity. The study investigated the correlation between circulating WISP-1 and CTRP1 in non-diabetic patients. Correlations between adipokines concentrations and biochemical and anthropometric parameters were also studied. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cross-sectional study enrolled 107 adult patients without diabetes. Patients with obesity accounted for 52.3% of the study group. Clinical, anthropometric, and laboratory data, including serum levels of WISP-1 and CTRP1, were obtained. RESULTS: The moderate positive correlation between serum WISP-1 and CTRP1 concentrations was observed (p<0.000001, r=0.49). The correlation was more substantial in non-obese patients than in the obese group (r=0.66 and r=0.36, respectively; p<0.01). Circulating CTRP1 correlated positively with fasting insulin, Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol (p<0.05). WISP-1 level correlated with total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol concentrations (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in WISP-1 and CTRP1 concentrations between the groups with and without insulin resistance. The concentrations of WISP-1 and CTRP1 were significantly higher in females than in males (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: WISP-1 and CTRP1 may represent interrelated factors that antagonistically affect insulin resistance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Insulin resistance is a major contributor to the development of type 2 diabetes and can be assessed using indirect indicators calculated from non-invasive tests. Asprosin is a recently discovered adipokine with a postulated effect on glycemic regulation. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between serum asprosin levels and insulin resistance indices. The correlation between circulating asprosin and obesity indices was also investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 50 non-diabetic patients with obesity and 50 healthy volunteers were studied. Laboratory data, including circulating asprosin and anthropometric data, were collected. The following insulin resistance indices were calculated: triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), TyG-neck circumference (TyG-NC), TyG-neck circumference to height ratio (TyG-NHtR), TyG-waist circumference (TyG-WC), TyG-waist to height ratio (TyG-WHtR), TyG-body mass index (TyG-BMI), and the ratio between triglycerides and high-density cholesterol (TG/HDLc). The obtained data were analyzed separately for males and females. RESULTS: Asprosin concentrations were significantly higher in obese patients (p < 0.001). Asprosin concentrations positively correlated with body mass index (p < 0.001, r = 0.8 in females and r = 0.8 in males), waist circumference (p < 0.001, r = 0.73 in females and r = 0.81 in males), and all tested indices of insulin resistance. The strongest correlation was observed for TyG-BMI (p < 0.001, r = 0.78 in females and r = 0.81 in males). Circulating asprosin was higher in females (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Asprosin can be considered a marker of obesity and insulin resistance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Resistin is a proinflammatory adipokine involved in metabolic disorders. Its interplay with hypertriglyceridemia remains to be elucidated. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between resistin (-420C/G) single nucleotide variant (SNV) and metabolic parameters and preference for fried food consumption in hypertriglyceridemia. METHODS: The study enrolled 179 hypertriglyceridemic (HTG) and 182 normotriglyceridemic (NTG) patients. Anthropometric measurements, serum resistin, insulin and fasting glucose concentration, a homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), triglycerides (TG), cholesterol concentration, and fried food taste preference (FP) or other cooking methods preference (OP) were assessed in the study. Genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. RESULTS: HTG and NTG groups did not differ significantly in serum resistin concentration; HTG individuals demonstrated significantly increased serum levels of TG, glucose, total cholesterol (TCH), and HOMA-IR and decreased HDL cholesterol. Resistin, insulin, glucose, HOMA-IR, and cholesterol fractions were similar among particular resistin genotypes in HTG, NTG, FP, or OP groups. TG and TCH concentrations differ significantly among CG and CC genotypes in the FP group. Considering the FP group, GG and CG genotypes appeared more frequently in hyperlipidemic (OR 2.6 95% CI; 1.16-5.82; p = 0.01; significant after Bonferroni correction) than in NTG patients. Multivariable logistic regression models showed that the G allele and CG genotype of SNV (-420C/G), adjusted for selected confounders such as fried food preference, increased the odds of hypertriglyceridemia about twofold. CONCLUSIONS: Allele G and CG genotype of resistin SNV (-420C/G) are linked with the preference for fried food taste in hypertriglyceridemic patients.

RESUMO

Contribution of UCP1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to susceptibility for cardiometabolic pathologies (CMP) and their involvement in specific risk factors for these conditions varies across populations. We tested whether UCP1 SNPs A-3826G, A-1766G, Ala64Thr and A-112C are associated with common CMP and their risk factors across Armenia, Greece, Poland, Russia and United Kingdom. This case-control study included genotyping of these SNPs, from 2,283 Caucasians. Results were extended via systematic review and meta-analysis. In Armenia, GA genotype and A allele of Ala64Thr displayed ~2-fold higher risk for CMP compared to GG genotype and G allele, respectively (p<0.05). In Greece, A allele of Ala64Thr decreased risk of CMP by 39%. Healthy individuals with A-3826G GG genotype and carriers of mutant allele of A-112C and Ala64Thr had higher body mass index compared to those carrying other alleles. In healthy Polish, higher waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) was observed in heterozygotes A-3826G compared to AA homozygotes. Heterozygosity of A-112C and Ala64Thr SNPs was related to lower WHR in CMP individuals compared to wild type homozygotes (p<0.05). Meta-analysis showed no statistically significant odds-ratios across our SNPs (p>0.05). Concluding, the studied SNPs could be associated with the most common CMP and their risk factors in some populations.

RESUMO

Probiotics are known to regulate host metabolism. In randomized controlled trial we aimed to assess whether interventions with probiotic containing following strains: Bifidobacterium bifidum W23, Bifidobacterium lactis W51, Bifidobacterium lactis W52, Lactobacillus acidophilus W37, Levilactobacillus brevis W63, Lacticaseibacillus casei W56, Ligilactobacillus salivarius W24, Lactococcus lactis W19, and Lactococcus lactis W58 affect gut microbiota to promote metabolic effects. By 16S rRNA sequencing we analyzed the fecal microbiota of 56 obese, postmenopausal women randomized into three groups: (1) probiotic dose 2.5 × 109 CFU/day (n = 18), (2) 1 × 1010 CFU/day (n = 18), or (3) placebo (n = 20). In the set of linear mixed-effects models, the interaction between pre- or post-treatment bacterial abundance and time on cardiometabolic parameters was significantly (FDR-adjusted) modified by type of intervention (26 and 19 three-way interactions for the pre-treatment and post-treatment abundance, respectively), indicating the modification of the bio-physiological role of microbiota by probiotics. For example, the unfavorable effects of Erysipelotrichi, Erysipelotrichales, and Erysipelotrichaceae on BMI might be reversed, but the beneficial effect of Betaproteobacteria on BMI was diminished by probiotic treatment. Proinflammatory effect of Bacteroidaceae was alleviated by probiotic administration. However, probiotics did not affect the microbiota composition, and none of the baseline microbiota-related features could predict therapeutic response as defined by cluster analysis. Conclusions: Probiotic intervention alters the influence of microbiota on biochemical, physiological and immunological parameters, but it does not affect diversity and taxonomic composition. Baseline microbiota is not a predictor of therapeutic response to a multispecies probiotic. Further multi-omic and mechanistic studies performed on the bigger cohort of patients are needed to elucidate the cardiometabolic effect of investigated probiotics in postmenopausal obesity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Detection of the seasonal patterns of healthy and unhealthy behavior could be helpful for designing individual and population health interventions programs. This study investigates the seasonal variation in sales of common types of products in Poland and Polish Google queries related to healthy behavior. METHODS: Data of index sales from a large Polish retail store franchise, from January 2014 to August 2019, has been analyzed. The commercial data included twelve types of products. The interest of Google users was investigated using Google Trends statistics for the same period for six lifestyle-related topics. The seasonality was checked using time series analysis. RESULTS: Six of the consumer goods (dairy, ready-made meals, salty snacks, meats, beer, and cigarettes) were most commonly purchased in summer months, four (processed fish, food fats, wine, and alcohol 30%+) in December, and two (bread and sweets) in October. The lowest sales indexes were observed mostly in February. The interest in four topics that have been analyzed ("Diet," "Dietitian," "Weight loss," and "Gym"), was highest in January, while interest in "Dietary supplements" was high in February, and "Running" in May. The search volume of the Google topics were the lowest in December. CONCLUSION: The purchase of food, drinks, and cigarettes, and the interest in information regarding different components of a healthy lifestyle has seasonal variation. New Year and Lent might be good periods to encourage healthy behavior. The motivation may decrease in summer and during Christmas.

RESUMO

We aimed to characterize the parenteral supplementation services in Czechia, Ireland, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom based on their websites. We generated a list of websites by searching Google using the term "vitamin infusion" and selected cities with 250,000 citizens from each analyzed country. All search inputs were performed using the native language. Data on the features of services, indications, contraindications, offered parenteral supplements, and social media activity were obtained. We analyzed 317 websites representing 371 active facilities. Only 6 (1.9%) facilities cited the scientific sources on parenteral supplementation, but these reference were highly biased; 17.4% did not provide information regarding their personnel, while 11.9% indicated the different contraindications. The most common indications were fatigue (62.5%), immunity enhancement (58.0%), anti-aging, and physical activity (51.5%). Approximately, 11.6% of facilities claimed that some parenteral supplements can help manage certain malignancies, while 2.2% claimed that they can help manage fertility problems. The most offered intravenous supplements were vitamins C (57.4%), B12 (47.7%), and B6 (42.3%). The parenteral supplementation market offers numerous ingredients as treatment for general health problems and serious health conditions. Many analyzed websites lacked essential information, which creates concerns for regarding the quality and reliability of the services.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the association of genetic variants in lactoferrin (LTF) metabolism-related genes with the prevalence of metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUHO). In total, 161 MHO and 291 MUHO subjects were recruited to the study. The following polymorphisms were genotyped: low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP) 2 rs2544390, LRP1 rs4759277, LRP1 rs1799986, LTF rs1126477, LTF rs2239692 and LTF rs1126478. We found significant differences in the genotype frequencies of LTF rs2239692 between MHO and MUHO subjects, with the CT variant associated with lower odds of developing metabolic syndrome than the TT variant. In the total population, significant differences in body weight and waist circumference (WC) were identified between LTF rs1126477 gene variants. A similar association with WC was observed in MUHO subjects, while significant differences in body mass index and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were discovered between LTF rs1126477 gene variants in MHO subjects. Besides, there were significant differences in diastolic blood pressure between LRP1 rs1799986 gene variants in MUHO subjects, as well as in WC and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels between LRP1 rs4759277 gene variants in MHO subjects. In conclusion, selected lactoferrin and lactoferrin receptor-related gene variants may be associated with the prevalence of metabolically healthy or metabolically unhealthy obesity.

RESUMO

The internet provides access to information about dietary supplements and allows their easy purchase. We aimed to rank the interest of Google users in dietary supplements and to determine the changes that occurred in their popularity from 2004 to 2019. We used Google Trends to generate data over time on regional interest in dietary supplements (n = 200). We categorized each included supplement and calculated the interest in all topics in proportion to the relative search volume (RSV) of "lutein". We analyzed the trends over time of all topics and categories. Globally, the topics with the highest popularity were "magnesium", which was 23.72 times more popular than "lutein", "protein" (15.22 times more popular), and "iron" (15.12). The categories of supplements receiving most interest were protein (9.64), mineral (5.24), and vitamin (3.47). The RSV of seven categories of topics (amino acid, bacterial, botanical, fiber, mineral, protein, and vitamin) increased over time while two categories (enzyme and fat or fatty acid) saw a drop in their RSV. Overall, 119 topics saw an increase in interest over time, 19 remained stable, and 62 saw interest in them decrease. Google Trends provides insights into e-discourse and enables analysis of the differences in popularity of certain topics across countries and over time.

RESUMO

Dysregulated metabolism of homocysteine (Hcy) is associated with obesity. Supplementation with probiotics can potentially be a natural therapeutic method for metabolic disorders. The precise mechanism in which microbiota affect Hcy metabolism in obese individuals is still unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a 12-week supplementation with a multispecies probiotic on Hcy levels, oxidative stress, inflammation and lipid profile in obese patients. This randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial was performed on 50 obese women (aged 45-70 years). Subjects were randomly assigned to take either a multispecies probiotic supplement (n = 25) or placebo (n = 25) for 12 weeks. The probiotic contained nine bacterial strains containing 2.5 × 109 CFU/g. Biochemical and anthropometric measurements were carried out at baseline and after 12 weeks of intervention. At the end of the study, a significant decrease in Hcy, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) and triglyceride (TG) levels were observed in the probiotic group. The amelioration of total antioxidant status (TAS) was also observed. The 12-week supplementation of the multispecies probiotic (Ecologic® BARIER) effectively reduced Hcy concentration, oxidative stress and inflammation, and improved the lipid profile. These multidirectional effects can potentially reduce cardiometabolic risks.

RESUMO

Vitamin D fractions can be involved in the pathogenesis of metabolic disorders, but their concentrations are rarely determined. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentration of vitamin D fractions in obese hypertensive patients and to determine its associations with anthropometric parameters, glucose levels, and lipid profiles. A total of 85 obese hypertensive patients (OBHT) and 40 nonobese nonhypertensive subjects (NOBNHT) underwent biochemical measurements of lipid profiles, glycemia, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), free vitamin D (free25(OH)D), vitamin D binding protein, albumin levels. Moreover, free25(OH)D and bioavailable25(OH)D (bio25(OH)D) concentrations were calculated. Blood pressure and anthropometric measurements were performed. Differences between groups (p < 0.001) were found for 25(OH)D (OBHT 40.25 ± 18.02 vs. NOBNHT 64.10 ± 22.29 nmol/L), free25(OH)D (9.77 (7.46; 11.49) vs. 13.80 (10.34; 16.82) pmol/L), bioavailable 25(OH)D (3.7 (2.8; 4.4) vs. 5.4 (4.2; 6.7) nmol/L), and calculated free25(OH)D (7.82 (5.54; 11.64) vs. 10.46(8.06;16.28) pmol/L, p = 0.002). The OBHT patients showed no relationship between vitamin D fractions concentration and glucose or lipids level, although it was associated with anthropometric parameters. In the NOBNHT group, vitamin D fractions correlated positively with HDL cholesterol and negatively with triglyceridemia and hip circumference. Vitamin D fractions were decreased in obese hypertensive subjects, and were associated with anthropometric parameters, but not with glucose level or lipid profiles; they thus cannot be considered as a predictive marker of metabolic disorders in this group of patients.

RESUMO

Some investigations have demonstrated that a combined endurance-strength training is the most effective in the treatment of obesity. The aim of the research was to access how different trainings influence: endothelial function, lipid metabolism, and risk of atherosclerosis in women with obesity. In a randomized trial, 39 obese women aged 28-62 completed endurance (n = 22, 60-80% HRmax) or combined training (n = 17, 20 minutes of strength exercises, 50-60% 1RM and 25 minutes of endurance training, 60-80% HRmax). Before and after the intervention vascular endothelial function (endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), blood total antioxidant capacity (TAC)), total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides and C-reactive protein (CRP)as well as visceral adiposity index (VAI), total-body skeletal muscle mass and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) were determined. After the trainings, in both groups total cholesterol and total-body skeletal muscle mass increased (p < 0.05). In the group undergoing combined training, lower (p < 0.05) VAI, AIP, CRP and LDL-C were noted. In the group undergoing endurance training TBARS concentration decreased (p < 0.01), while the HDL-C (p < 0.01) concentration as well as eNOS (p < 0.05) activity increased. No significant differences between groups were found, either before or after the programs. Both training programs led to the improvement of lipid metabolism, but only endurance training alone favorably changed indicators of endothelial functions in women with obesity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Garlic exerts a range of effects relevant to human health. However, its influence on the endothelium in obese individuals remains unknown. We aimed to determine the effects of garlic extract (GE) on arterial stiffness and markers of endothelial function. METHODS: Ninety-two subjects were enrolled in this study. The participants were randomly assigned to receive 400 mg of GE or placebo daily for 3 months. The arterial stiffness index (SI) and markers of endothelial function such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), cholesterol (total, LDL, HDL), triglycerides, and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), as well as total antioxidant status (TAS) were quantified at baseline and the end of study. RESULTS: At the end of study SI (p = 0.01), hsCRP (p < 0.001, PAI-1 (p < 0.001), LDL cholesterol (p < 0.001), and TAS (p < 0.01) were reduced in the GE-supplemented group, but not in the placebo group. CONCLUSION: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial demonstrates that supplementation with GE favorably modifies endothelial biomarkers associated with cardiovascular risk and suggests that GE can be used to suppress chronic inflammation in obese individuals.

RESUMO

Background: Recent studies indicate the important role of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of hypertension. Green tea, due to the high content of catechins, shows high antioxidant activity. Objective: To determine the effect of supplementation with green tea extract on the blood pressure, on the concentration of selected parameters of inflammation and antioxidant status in the model of high-sodium-diet induced hypertension. Design: The study lasted 42 days. The experimental population consisted of 30 rats. The rats were divided into three groups. The rats in the control group were fed a standard diet with 35 g of NaCl per kg of diet, in the second group hypertensive rats were fed a standard diet with NaCl (35 g/kg diet) and with an extract of green tea (2 g/kg diet). The third group consisted of hypertensive rats fed a standard diet with NaCl (35 g/kg diet), and 4 g of green tea extract/kg diet. Results: Supplementation with green tea had no effect on body mass of rats on a high-sodium diet. At the end of the experiment systolic blood pressures in SH2 and SH4 groups were significantly lower than in the control group SK. The SH4 group was characterized by a significantly lower diastolic blood pressure value and concentration of TNF-α in comparison to the SK group. The rats from both SH2 and SH4 groups were characterized by higher total antioxidant status values compared to the control group. Discussion: The mechanism of the beneficial effects of green tea on blood pressure is not clear, but it is believed that it is related to its omnidirectional properties. Conclusions: Supplementation of green tea has a beneficial effect on blood pressure, markers of inflammation and antioxidant status in an experimental model of hypertension.
