RESUMO

This study investigates the effect of A-site disorder, characterized by the average ionic radius (〈rA〉) and the cation mismatch (σ2), on the structural, magnetic, critical behavior, and magnetic entropy changes in La0.7(Ba,Ca,Sr)0.3MnO3 manganites with trisubstituted Ba, Ca, and Sr. The sol-gel method was used to prepare polycrystalline samples. All series of compounds crystallize in rhombohedral symmetry with the R3̄c space group. A linear relationship between lattice parameters, unit cell volume, and 〈rA〉 was observed. This reveals an unusual behavior in the correlation between 〈rA〉 and σ2 concerning magnetic properties, which is attributed to the complex simultaneous trisubstitution of divalent ions. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were utilized to validate the chemical composition of compounds. All the samples crystallized in rhombohedral symmetry, and the lattice parameters increased continuously with increasing 〈rA〉. A-site disorder causes distortions in the Mn-O bond length and Mn-O-Mn bond angle in the MnO6 octahedral structure, which influences the double-exchange interaction and electronic bandwidth (W). The Curie temperature (TC) increases linearly with increasing W. The critical behavior around TC for all the samples was investigated by determining the values of the critical exponents (ß, γ, and δ) using the modified Arrott plot (MAP) method. The estimated critical exponents show that the unconventional model establishes a short-range ferromagnetic order. The maximum magnetic entropy change (-ΔSM) was obtained with the lowest 〈rA〉 and σ2 value. The analysis of the critical behavior and universal curve indicates a second-order phase transition (SOPT) nature for all samples.

RESUMO

The field-induced quantum-disordered state of layered honeycomb magnet α-RuCl3 is a prime candidate for Kitaev spin liquids hosting Majorana fermions and non-Abelian anyons. Recent observations of anomalous planar thermal Hall effect demonstrate a topological edge mode, but whether it originates from Majorana fermions or bosonic magnons remains controversial. Here, we distinguish these origins from combined low-temperature measurements of high-resolution specific heat and thermal Hall conductivity with rotating magnetic fields within the honeycomb plane. A distinct closure of the low-energy bulk gap is observed for the fields in the Ru-Ru bond direction, and the gap opens rapidly when the field is tilted. Notably, this change occurs concomitantly with the sign reversal of the Hall effect. General discussions of topological bands show that this is the hallmark of an angle rotation-induced topological transition of fermions, providing conclusive evidence for the Majorana-fermion origin of the thermal Hall effect in α-RuCl3.

RESUMO

The Hemocompatibility Assessment Platform (HAP) is a testing rig that will allow for the evaluation of blood trauma caused by individual components of rotary blood pumps including the NeoVAD - a proposed paediatric Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD). It is important that the HAP itself is only minimally haemolytic such that the plasma free haemoglobin measured can be assumed to come from the test component. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations have been carried out to inform the design of a magnetically levitated motor bearing gap. Simulations show that issues with the original design, namely stagnation regions and large recirculation zones can be mitigated with the introduction of a pipe that introduces blood-flow to the centre of the bearing and disrupts the secondary flow patterns that cause these issues.Clinical relevance- The consequent reduction in shear exposure time will reduce heamolsyis from the HAP. The redesign of the bearing will result in reduced baseline blood trauma from the HAP, thus allowing quantification of test component haemolysis and will therefore aid the design of future paediatric LVADs.

RESUMO

We developed a metallic pressure cell made of 56Ni-40Cr-4Al (Ni-Cr-Al) alloy for use with a non-destructive pulse magnet and a magnetic susceptibility measurement apparatus with a proximity detector oscillator (PDO) in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 51 T under pressures of up to 2.1 GPa. Both the sample and sensor coil of the PDO were placed in the cell so that the magnetic signal from Ni-Cr-Al would not overlay the intrinsic magnetic susceptibility of the sample. A systematic investigation of the Joule heating originating from metallic parts of the pressure cell revealed that the increase in sample temperature is negligible at 1.4 K in magnetic fields of up to 40 T in the field-ascending process for the maximum applied magnetic field of 51 T. The effectiveness of our apparatus was demonstrated by investigating the pressure dependence of the magnetization process of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ba3CoSb2O9.

RESUMO

Pursuing the exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) state in the Kitaev material α-RuCl3 has intrigued great research interest recently. A fascinating question is on the possible existence of a field-induced QSL phase in this compound. Here we perform high-field magnetization measurements of α-RuCl3 up to 102 T employing the non-destructive and destructive pulsed magnets. Under the out-of-plane field along the c* axis (i.e., perpendicular to the honeycomb plane), two quantum phase transitions are uncovered at respectively 35 T and about 83 T, between which lies an intermediate phase as the predicted QSL. This is in sharp contrast to the case with in-plane fields, where a single transition is found at around 7 T and the intermediate QSL phase is absent instead. By measuring the magnetization data with fields tilted from the c* axis up to 90° (i.e., in-plane direction), we obtain the field-angle phase diagram that contains the zigzag, paramagnetic, and QSL phases. Based on the K-J-Γ-[Formula: see text] model for α-RuCl3 with a large Kitaev term we perform density matrix renormalization group simulations and reproduce the quantum phase diagram in excellent agreement with experiments.

RESUMO

To evaluate the hemocompatibility of individual components of our pediatric left ventricular assist device (LVAD), we proposed a hemocompatibility assessment platform (HAP) with a magnetic levitated bearing system. The HAP consists of a drive system utilizing a brushless direct current (BLDC) motor, passive magnetic bearings (PMB), and an active magnetically levitated bearing (AMB) to reduce the hemolysis generated by HAP itself. In this study, we designed and evaluated the performance of the AMB by measuring radial and axial displacements of the rotor resulting from radially destabilizing forces as well as the performance of the drive system when rotated at increasing speeds to 1,200 rotations per minute (rpm). The results show that, with radial disturbance, the AMB is capable of maintaining axial stability for the BLDC motor system. The AMB can control up to 1,200 rpm without any contact between the rotor and stator. Future work includes geometry optimization for the AMB structure and increase the capability to control stable high-speed rotation for the entire system. Clinical Relevance- This work furthers the development of the magnetic levitated bearing system for a hemocompatibility assessment platform that will be used to enhance and accelerate the development of adult and pediatric LVADs.

RESUMO

Development of pediatric left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) has lagged behind that of adult LVADs, primarily due to the size and hemocompatibility constraints of pediatric anatomy. To quantify sources of blood trauma during LVAD development, we proposed a hemocompatibility assessment platform (HAP) that can evaluate the hemocompatibility of individual components of LVADs. To eliminate the hemolysis induced by the HAP itself, we incorporated passive magnetic (PM) bearings to suspend the rotor radially and an active magnetic bearing (AMB) to control the axial position. In this study, we numerically evaluated AMB forces of 2 geometries and validated the model by comparing its predictions with experimental results. The magnetic forces generated by the AMB were evaluated by increasing the rotor-stator gap from 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm with a 0.1 mm increment and by varying the coil current from -2 A to 2 A with a 1 A increment. The average error of the numerical models was 8.8% and 7.0% for the two geometries, respectively. Higher errors were found at smaller (<0.2mm) rotor-stator gaps. For both biasing ring sizes, the AMB exhibits high magnetic stiffness from -1 A to 1 A, though it saturates for currents of -2 A and 2 A. This region of high current stiffness was identified as the optimal control region. In future work, this function will be used to tune a control algorithm to modulate current supplied to the AMB, ultimately stabilizing the rotor axially. Clinical Relevance- This work furthers the development of a hemocompatibility assessment platform that will enhance and accelerate the development of adult and pediatric LVADs.

RESUMO

Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have long been used to treat adults with heart failure, but LVAD options for pediatric patients with heart failure are lacking. Despite the urgent need for long-term, implantable pediatric LVADs, design challenges such as hemolysis, pump thrombosis, and bleeding persist. We have developed a Hemocompatibility Assessment Platform (HAP) to identify blood trauma from individual LVAD components. A HAP would aid in refining pump components before in vivo testing, thereby preventing unnecessary animal sacrifice and reducing development time and cost. So that the HAP does not confound hemolysis data, the HAP drive system consists of an enlarged air-gap motor coupled to a magnetic levitation system. Although it is known that an enlarged air gap motor will have diminished performance, while the larger gap in the motor will cause less blood damage, the trade-offs are not fully characterized. Therefore, in this study we evaluated these trade-offs to determine an optimal rotor diameter for the HAP drive motor. The motor performance was characterized with an experimental method by determining the torque constant for the HAP drive motor with varied rotor diameters. The torque threshold was set as 10 mNm to achieve a nominal current of 3.5A. Hemolysis in the HAP drive motor gap was estimated by calculating scalar shear stress generated in the HAP motor gap analytically and numerically. A design criterion of 30 Pa was selected for scalar shear stress to achieve minimal hemolysis and platelet activation in the HAP drive system.Clinical Relevance- We evaluated a Hemocompatibility Assessment Platform for developing LVAD prototypes that can best balance motor performance and hemocompatibility. This design method can assist with optimizing the drive system during the research stage and illustrates how motor geometry can be tuned to reduce blood trauma.

RESUMO

Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have increasingly been used clinically to treat heart failure patients. However, hemolysis, pump thrombosis, infection and bleeding still persist as major limitations of LVAD technology. Assessing LVAD hemocompatibility using a blood shear stress device (BSSD) has clear advantages, as the BSSD could provide a better experimental platform to develop reliable, quantifiable blood trauma assays to perform iterative testing of LVAD designs. In this study, a BSSD was proposed with short blood exposure time and no seals or contact bearings to reduce blood trauma caused by the test platform. Enlarged air-gap drive motor in BSSD is essential to avoid high shear stress; however, it would significantly reduce the motor torque, which may result in inadequate force to drive the entire system. In order to evaluate and optimize the drive motor air-gap to ensure adequate motor torque as well as acceptable range for blood exposure time and shear stress, a numerical brushless DC (BLDC) motor model was established using finite element method (FEM) in numerical simulation software COMSOL. The model was first validated by the experimental results. Then numerical model with different air-gap was evaluated on the torque and speed constant changes. In the end, two equations were generated based on the curves derived from the torque and speed constant calculations. Determining these relationships between motor performance and motor air-gap will facilitate the development of an appropriate BLDC motor size for the BSSD, considering the design limitations in our future work.

RESUMO

The investigation of materials that exhibit quantum phase transition provides valuable insights into fundamental problems in physics. We present neutron scattering under pressure in a triangular-lattice antiferromagnet that has a quantum disorder in the low-pressure phase and a noncollinear structure in the high-pressure phase. The neutron spectrum continuously evolves through critical pressure; a single mode in the disordered state becomes soft with the pressure and it splits into gapless and gapped modes in the ordered phase. Extended spin-wave theory reveals that the longitudinal and transverse fluctuations of spins are hybridized in the modes because of noncollinearity, and previously unidentified magnetic excitations are formed. We report a new hybridization of the phase and amplitude fluctuations of the order parameter near a quantum critical point in a spontaneously symmetry-broken state.

RESUMO

Magnetic excitations of the effective spin S=1/2 dimerized magnet Ba_{2}CoSi_{2}O_{6}Cl_{2} have been probed directly via inelastic neutron scattering experiments at temperatures down to 4 K. We observed five types of excitation at 4.8, 5.8, 6.6, 11.4, and 14.0 meV, which are all dispersionless within the resolution limits. The scattering intensities of the three low-lying excitations were found to exhibit different Q dependencies. Detailed analysis has demonstrated that Ba_{2}CoSi_{2}O_{6}Cl_{2} is a two-dimensional spin dimer system described only by a single dimer site, where the triplet excitations are localized owing to the almost perfect frustration of the interdimer exchange interactions and the undimerized spins, even in small concentration, make an essential contribution to the excitation spectrum.

RESUMO

Search for topological materials has been actively promoted in the field of condensed matter physics for their potential application in energy-efficient information transmission and processing. Recent studies have revealed that topologically invariant states, such as edge states in topological insulators, can emerge not only in a fermionic electron system but also in a bosonic system, enabling nondissipative propagation of quasiparticles. Here we report the topologically nontrivial triplon bands measured by inelastic neutron scattering on the spin-1/2 two-dimensional dimerized antiferromagnet Ba2CuSi2O6Cl2. The excitation spectrum exhibits two triplon bands that are clearly separated by a band gap due to a small alternation in interdimer exchange interaction, consistent with a refined crystal structure. By analytically modeling the triplon dispersion, we show that Ba2CuSi2O6Cl2 is the first bosonic realization of the coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, where the presence of topologically protected edge states is prompted by a bipartite nature of the lattice.

RESUMO

A spin-1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLHAF) is a prototypical frustrated quantum magnet, which exhibits remarkable quantum many-body effects that arise from the synergy between spin frustration and quantum fluctuation. The ground-state properties of a spin-1/2 TLHAF are theoretically well understood. However, the theoretical consensus regarding the magnetic excitations is limited. The experimental study of the magnetic excitations in spin-1/2 TLHAFs has also been limited. Here we show the structure of magnetic excitations in the spin-1/2 TLHAF Ba3CoSb2O9 investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. Significantly different from theoretical expectations, the excitation spectrum has a three-stage energy structure. The lowest-energy first stage is composed of dispersion branches of single-magnon excitations. The second and third stages are dispersive continua accompanied by a columnar continuum extending above 10 meV, which is six times larger than the exchange interaction J = 1.67 meV. Our results indicate the shortcomings of the current theoretical framework.Two-dimensional frustrated magnets are heavily studied because theories predict that quantum effects may lead to the emergence of fractionalized excitations. Ito et al. use inelastic neutron scattering to show that the excitation spectrum of Ba3CoSb2O9 disagrees with current theoretical expectations.

RESUMO

We have performed high-field magnetization and electronic spin resonance (ESR) measurements on Ba3CoSb2O9 single crystals, which approximates the two-dimensional (2D) S=1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. For an applied magnetic field H parallel to the ab plane, the entire magnetization curve including the plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization (Ms) is in excellent agreement with the results of theoretical calculations except a small step anomaly near (3/5)Ms, indicative of a theoretically undiscovered quantum phase transition. However, for H∥c, the magnetization curve exhibits a cusp near Ms/3 owing to the weak easy-plane anisotropy and the 2D quantum fluctuation. From a detailed analysis of the collective ESR modes observed in the ordered state, combined with the magnetization process, we have determined all the magnetic parameters including the interlayer and anisotropic exchange interactions.

RESUMO

Cyclotron resonance (CR) measurements for the Fe-based superconductor KFe(2)As(2) are performed. One signal for CR is observed, and is attributed to the two-dimensional α Fermi surface at the Γ point. We found a large discrepancy in the effective masses of CR [(3.4±0.05)m(e) (m(e) is the free-electron mass)] and de Haas-van Alphen results, a direct evidence of mass enhancement due to electronic correlation. A comparison of the CR and de Haas-van Alphen results shows that both intra- and interband electronic correlations contribute to the mass enhancement in KFe(2)As(2).

RESUMO

We show that the Fermi surface (FS) in the antiferromagnetic phase of BaFe(2)As(2) is composed of one hole and two electron pockets, all of which are three dimensional and closed, in sharp contrast to the FS observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Considerations on the carrier compensation and Sommerfeld coefficient rule out existence of unobserved FS pockets of significant sizes. A standard band structure calculation reasonably accounts for the observed FS, despite the overestimated ordered moment. The mass enhancement, the ratio of the effective mass to the band mass, is 2-3.

RESUMO

We report the first observation of a single-vortex flow in a mesoscopic superconductor. A flow of a single vortex is successfully controlled by an rf current superimposed on a dc current, evidence of which is provided by voltage steps in current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. Irrespective of the number of vortices confined to the disk, we unambiguously observe that when a single vortex inside the disk is driven out of the disk, another vortex enters the disk similarly to two balls colliding in billiards: only one vortex passes through the Al disk at the same time in mesoscopic systems.

RESUMO

Magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity studies on single crystals of Ce4Pt12Sn25 reveal an antiferromagnetic transition at T(N) = 0.19 K, which develops from a paramagnetic state with a very large specific heat coefficient (C/T) of 14 J mol(-1) K(-2)-Ce just above T(N). On the basis of its crystal structure and these measurements, we argue that a weak magnetic exchange interaction in Ce4Pt12Sn25 is responsible for its low ordering temperature and a negligible Kondo-derived contribution to physical properties above T(N). The anomalous enhancement of specific heat above T(N) is suggested to be related, in part, to weak geometric frustration of f-moments in this compound.

RESUMO

A suspension system for the BiVACOR biventricular assist device (BiVAD) has been developed and tested. The device features two semi-open centrifugal impellers mounted on a common rotating hub. Flow balancing is achieved through the movement of the rotor in the axial direction. The rotor is suspended in the pump casings by an active magnetic suspension system in the axial direction and a passive hydrodynamic bearing in the radial direction. This paper investigates the axial movement capacity of the magnetic bearing system and the power consumption at various operating points. The force capacity of the passive hydrodynamic bearing is investigated using a viscous glycerol solution. Axial rotor movement in the range of +/-0.15 mm is confirmed and power consumption is under 15.5 W. The journal bearing is shown to stabilize the rotor in the radial direction at the required operating speed. Magnetic levitation is a viable suspension technique for the impeller of an artificial heart to improve device lifetime and reduce blood damage.
